On the Grid : Bow Arts: The Nunnery

"With an award-winning education programme and a mission to support community renewal in East London, The Nunnery gallery is worth popping into whilst you're on the Bow and Mile End circuit and looking for a bit of culture. A highlight is the Bow Open Studios, hosted by the Nunnery - one of the most vibrant art events in London. It's a good opportunity to explore the work of local artists and meet some of the emerging artists exhibiting at the event. Positioned perfectly next door, the Carmelite cafe is great for a sit-down and a coffee afterwards." - Adam Johnson

My google newsfeed notified me of a free exhibition of the East London Group at this gallery. I couldn't believe it! I'd learned about this group of artists from a twitter shared newspaper article a couple of years back, where I'd taken a shine to a painting by Cecil Osborne, which is here. But I was introduced to the Steggles brothers, Harold and Walter. Such a wonderful exhibition that I'd urge people to visit before it closes on 22nd December. Thank you to the Gallery for creating such an exhibition In the heart of the subject matter.

Small and personal. Easy to get here by public transport. Has a main viewing room which leads to a corridor with more artworks then the cafe area. I enjoyed the coffee and the atmosphere was friendly.

Nunnery gallery is a hidden gem. Free entry and proceeds from the attached cafe go to the costs of upkeep of the gallery. The collection changes periodically. During my visit the themes included the plight of the elderly during Covid, the death toll on Ukraine; mental-health issues and others. Not uplifting subjects but the photos conveyed the subject matter accurately. Brief description on each collection was very insightful. Well worth a visit. A small gallery so probably no more than 30 minutes to fully appreciate the collections. Thought-provoking and meaningful. Recommended.

Their coffee tastes delicious! The cafe it's filled with art, which you can also buy. The staff it's always been lovely and everything is made fresh. There is also a free gallery with different exhibitions every time. They also host events and workshops. One of the best cafe in east London!

Lovely gallery and current exhibition on East London Group is great. Can we have some seats in the middle of the main gallery to sit and contemplate? And bigger signs for the pictures - no point in tiny ones. No one can read them without leaning in and impeding other's views!

Great coffee and a cake on this visit. I've been here for a couple of exhibitions in the past and they were well laid out and presented.

A great small gallery that punches above its weight. Shows include really stimulating ones on industry: Plastics, Bow Porcellain + Printing, as well as the East London Group of Artists... ...and yes, nice coffee too
