Nura Hummusiya Is Open in Portland, Maine, and Other New England News | Eater Boston

"A hummus-centric vegetarian concept from the operators of a popular falafel truck, this small-format hummusiya features breads made daily, hummus-focused plates and falafel pockets, and will offer breakfast, lunch, and weekend brunch from a roughly 30-seat space." - Dana Hatic

Nura Hummus, Falafel, and Shawarma

Tara K.

Google
Love this place! The falafel is incredibly fresh, and the portions are huge. On this visit, we enjoyed the Nura Falafel Pocket with falafel, hummus, pickled beet relish, cucumber dill salad, tahini sauce, all tucked into a pita, plus a side of shawarma-dusted fries. We also ordered the falafel salad with hummus, falafel, local greens, shaved radish, cucumber, tahini sauces, and fresh pomegranate seeds that added a perfect pop of freshness. Order at the counter, grab a seat, and enjoy. You won’t regret it, and you’ll likely want to make this a regular lunch spot just like us!

Google
Had a wonderful lunch here. The pita was fresh, soft and packed full. It held together perfectly and didn’t fall apart prematurely. The falafel in my wife’s salad was amazing also! The people who worked there were friendly and helpful and even brought our food directly to our table with a smile. I’ll definitely be stopping in again.

Google
I wish we had a place like this in Chicago! The food was absolutely fantastic — every bite was bursting with incredible flavor. I was genuinely impressed that our sandwiches (falafel & chicken shawerma) held together perfectly despite being packed full. Everything tasted so fresh and clean, I didn’t even feel guilty rolling out the door afterward, lol. Hats off to the chef — definitely a must-try spot in Portland, ME!

Google
Great tasting healthy food. Enjoyed some of the extra touches and ingredients. Nice atmosphere. Friendly staff.

Google
My first time at Nura, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The food was fresh and flavorful, and the service was warm and welcoming. The standout was the salad, bright, balanced, and the pomegranate was the perfect finishing touch. A fantastic first visit, and definitely not my last.

Majid A.

Google
The shawarma and falafel were delightful, offering authentic Mediterranean flavors. While the prices are slightly elevated, the quality of the food justifies the cost. Considering it’s the sole Mediterranean restaurant in the area, it stands out as a worthwhile dining option.

Google
The falafel was so so good — definitely the thing to order here! It was fried to perfection, with a crispy exterior and a soft, fluffy interior. And that vibrant green color!! The shawarma fries were good, and the hummus was super smooth and luscious. The hummus bowl was a reallllyyyy underwhelming, though. I’m glad I got an extra side of the beet salad because it really needed some brightness. The side portion was incredibly scant, too, for the cost. The mint lemonade also tasted just like regular lemonade. Overall, I’d get the falafel again, but I felt the meal I ordered was super overpriced for the lack of flavor (especially the mushroom shawarma).

Google
Some of the best falafel I have ever had. Fries were crispy and seasoned well. Highly recommend!

Yelp
First thing's first: Get. The. Fries. It's like a fresh batch of McDonald's fries dusted generously with shawarma seasoning. I could have just eaten a bag of those and been completely content. Second: a falafel sandwich will fill you right up. I opted for the Nura Falafel Pocket, and it was a mighty fine choice. I loved the pillowy pita; the falafel reminded me of NYC; and I appreciated Nura's twists with the pickled beets, garlic yogurt, and cucumber dill salad. After the fact I saw that I could have added spicy harissa for an additional charge, and I wish I had seen that when I placed my order. This pocket would have benefited from some heat, as it did have a sweet note from the beets. My only gripe was that I didn't get any hummus until the very end. That was too long to wait! Nura was 2/2 overall, so I'm giving them 5/5 stars. Come here for lunch, Yelpers, and you'll be pleased!

Yelp
Gently sliding downhill... The first time I went to Nura, there was a staff person putting pickled turnips and pickles into the sandwich with tweezers and the salad was lovely, also with pickles and a nice helping of hummus. Today, not so much, the sandwiches were large but dark and crumbly, the hummus was smeared on the bottom of the paper bowl which sucked the moisture out of it, and there were zero pickles to be found. sniff...

Yelp
Amazing falafel & hummus. I will come here every time I am in Portland Just needed a snack but I look forward to trying more of their menu on my next visit :)

Yelp
I haven't been able to try Nura for the longest time, mainly because their hours are a bit wonky (they seem to be closed on random days and before times that I'd normally seek them out, but whatever). Don't be deterred by their relatively unassuming outside, Nura is a cute little Mediterranean fast casual food spot; you can either sit down and enjoy your meal in their small space, or grab it to go, as their food is prepped pretty quickly. Very Cava-esque. Now, onto the food: SOOOOOO GOOD. I had the limeade (yum, and perfect for a hot day) and the Mushroom Shawarma (a soft pita filled with all the classic makings of a falafel sandwich, for example: hummus, lettuce, tomato, unbelievably delicious sauce, etc), but with mushrooms. I truly haven't had a meal that good in years (sauce dribbling down my chin and all). Great options for vegans and vegetarians alike, plus those looking for a relatively affordable, healthy meal that they can enjoy on the go. Don't miss out on Portland's underrated gem, Nura!!! Pro tip: they're notorious for their delish vegan iced chai, and their Zaatar dusted fries, too.

Yelp
I just died and went to falafel heaven. I've been looking for the perfect falafel ball for ten years and I just found it. Perfectly fried, perfectly seasoned and so moist my mouth just exploded. Soooo delicious!
google avatar

Surabhi J.

Yelp
Fast service, easy ordering and location. Vegetarian falafel was good. Chicken one was slightly bland, but fresh food
google avatar

Trish K.

Yelp
Excellent food. Great falafel sandwich. Very tasty. Definitely recommend trying if you're in the Portland area.

Anju P.

Yelp
I did a take out order. Their falafel sandwich is decent! I liked the beet that came with the sandwich, the hummus was good too. The place was packed for a weekday. It looks like a local favorite place.
google avatar

Stephen H.

Yelp
Quaint place Friendly service Falafel moist and tasty, really like dusted fries and plenty for $5.56 odd pricing model Would recommend. Other person had steak shawarma that was decent with shavings of beef
google avatar

Anshita S.

Yelp
Amazing service and great food!! The ambiance is casual but the food more than compensates for everything. The place was kept clean too. It is one of the best falafel I have had in New England area. It was light, crunchy from outside, thankfully not dry from Inside and full of flavor. The hummus was smooth and tasty. My falafel sandwich was so different and it was a party of flavors in my mouth. The salad was great and the fries were delicious. The portion size was good and the food was fresh. We went there 10 mins before they close but they did not frown even once, did not rush us and were so kind and patient with us. Highly recommend if you are in the area!

Yelp
Wow. Normally, I would never swoon over a salad or wish I could eat one everyday, but after trying the falafel salad today at Nura, I legitimately wish I could eat that every day. It was SO flavorful, perfectly dressed, and filling. Their falafel is top tier in both flavor and texture. The tahini sauce is a slightly thinner hummus which made the salad not too weighed down. It also included a vinaigrette which was delicious, leafy greens, and thinly sliced cucumbers and watermelon radishes which were a great pairing. For a fairly small space they have a good amount of seating, and the service was friendly and fast. I also know they do a lot to support the nursing community to my hats off to them. This was the perfect lunch and I will absolutely be back.

Yelp
So glad we stumbled upon this restaurant! Not sure what to order? The veggie falafel was AMAZING. My husband got the chicken shawarma which he thought was good, but he liked the falafels more. Quick dine it or grab and go. Friendly staff as well!
google avatar

Julie Y.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this place as a friend recommended it to me. I was excited to try it out. Sadly, my chicken shawarma bowl did not meet expectation. There was very little of everything and the chicken shawarma itself was basically leftover pieces that were bone dry. I even ordered an extra protein and the same. I will not be coming back to this place.

Madeleine M.

Yelp
So yummy! Tons of flavor and several vegetarian options. Cute atmosphere and great service too!
google avatar

Saeed A.

Yelp
delicious, better price, fresh, taste good etc Nura in Portland is a haven for falafel lovers! Their delicious, freshly made falafels are not only a delight for the taste buds but also light on the pocket. It's a perfect blend of taste and affordability, making it a must-visit place for all food enthusiasts.
google avatar

Yelp
Came in with my husband for lunch on a sunny Sunday in April There was indoor seating available We went with chicken shawarma in a pita and a hummus bowl (with an extra pita) The shawarma sandwich was tasty and packed with chicken, but I loved the bowl, it was PERFECT for sharing We were also VERY glad that we ordered an extra pita Pita bread here is exceptional, consider ordering a few to take home!
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
Absolutely fabulous!! We've been 6 times already and the owner is always present and is there to ensure the best quality and experience. The chicken shwarma is perfect and their falafel is good enough to compete in the Middle East. They have a very nice quiet outdoor seating area that is dog friendly. Highly recommend!!! My only complaint, and what would make this 6 out of 5 stars, is that their harissa sauce is the spiciest they have. We love spice!!! Please consider offering customers a sauce option with some heat!

Maggie A.

Yelp
this place tastes like theyre just making up the recipes with whatevers in the fridge. not authentic at all and no effort put into the quality of the food. i dont know who taught these people how to cook but they were setting them up. menu lacks any variety and the floors were super sticky and nasty. i'll be taking my business to Dina's on forest ave, an actual middle eastern restaurant.
google avatar

Sara L.

Yelp
So good! We got the Nura falafel, the classic falafel and a side of fries. I was surprised about the beets but it was actually really good especially with the hot sauce. The side of fries was really good and they give you a lot. Such a good place.
google avatar

Toni K.

Yelp
My favorite lunch spot! The food is so fresh and clean. I always feel like I could bath in the hummus. They make it and it is the best you'll find on the East coast. It is a small business so everyone is very friendly and local so you'll likely see them out too. It's a place I take everyone!!

Rajkumar M.

Yelp
I had the humus bowl with falafel And mushroom. The best i had so far and i never thought the mushroom would go so well with humus. Great service! Small place but nice
google avatar

Rory M.

Yelp
Can't say enough about Nura. Everyone was kind and attentive. The Nura falafel was awesome. Looking forward to trying the rest of the menu.
google avatar

Taals B.

Yelp
This was a gem! We ordered online and the food was ready within 15 mins of them opening. I would highly recommend the mushroom pockets, it was bursting with flavors. I've had a lot of Mediterranean in my life and this is most flavorful so far. The falafels that I added as extra with this, was beyond delicious. The humus had a good consistency and tasted really fresh. One of the best restaurants in Portland, ME so far! The lady at the counter was very nice and friendly too. We would go back in a heartbeat. Tip- You can order online or call them for pickup. The shop is inside the building with other businesses.
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
I love Falafel Mafia and have only had their Godfather pita. Since they're not open yet and Nura right around the corner I stopped by. I always wanted to try their chicken pita. The chicken was flavorful, juicy and a good portion. Overall a good pita. I just simply prefer their falafel, which is surprising because I am a meat eater. Goes to show how amazing their falafel is, and how meat isn't always the answer to yummy and filling food.
google avatar

Becky A.

Yelp
The food is so good. I've spent time in the Middle East and this is the closest I've come to eating anything like their food since. The staff is friendly, the food came out quickly, and the tables were all clean. It's definitely a great spot to go for something somewhat quick as well as a sit down spot.

Daniela O.

Yelp
I had a chicken shawarma bowl, offff it was one of the best I ever had! I could eat this every day, the hummus was amazing!
google avatar

Paulina S.

Yelp
If you're looking for fresh and delicious Mediterranean food, this is not it. They can't produce the product they're going for. This is a great location, the inside is beautiful. Not sure why their products aren't coming out better. It's not even average, their bar is so low. I ordered a hummus bowl with beets, after a consultation with the cashier who was kind. When it came out, it was the least creative dish I've ever seen (as pictured.) They give you 300 pounds of hummus (no seriously, it's almost a whole tub) and not a lot else. Comes with 1 slice of pita. Not worth the $13-14 price for basically nothing. They didn't even give me beets like I asked for. I've given this place multiple chances. The falafel here always gives me a stomach ache. They are disinterested in making their menu great. I can make the same thing, easily, at home. While dining in; we overheard the manager or whoever it was, talking to the cashier in length about how great their location is, and their plans to upgrade their interior design better. I suggest upgrade your menu. We were 2 of 4 people inside. We were listening to this conversation with terrible food in front of us. It seemed odd that we had just received such a low quality plate (as pictured), and they were just talking about their plans that had nothing to do with the food their customers were getting. We were all the way in the back, and we could still hear every word they were saying. They are all about getting to the next level for their company while they still haven't even established a base of quality food.

Beth C.

Yelp
This is one of my fave spots to eat in Portland. If you're wanting some of the best, authentic hummus you've ever had make sure to come here. The falafel is hands down the best in Portland as well.

Tess F.

Yelp
Really good and fresh falafal bowl, and a nice place to sit outside and eat. Fast and friendly service.

Sandra L.

Yelp
Excellent and fresh. The chicken sandwich was hot and tender and beautifully seasoned. The falafel were crisp w a moist interior.
google avatar

Barrett W.

Yelp
My go to lunch spot. My favorite is the chicken shawarma bowl. Their falafel is also excellent. Love that I can order online and run up to grab it.
google avatar

Steff D.

Yelp
I have been a fangirl of Falafel Mafia for some time now and was thrilled to hear they were another food truck going to brick and mortar! The food is *ALWAYS* (asterisks and caps for extra emphasis) good. I would say these folks make some of the best falafel in the city. I always get the same thing and I'm never disappointed: falafel pocket (falafel, hummus, cucumber, pickled cabbage [side note: I really think the pickled cabbage is the secret to this sandwich], and tahini with both mango amba and spicy harissa on the side) and a disgusting amount of their shawarma seasoned fries. Best part? It's. All. Vegan. I don't know why, but the food truck was a little more convenient to get to (especially when it was parked up in the West End where there was always ample parking spots and lovely expanses of grass to sit and wait for your order) than this spot on Monument Square -- maybe I wouldn't feel this way if I didn't live off peninsula. Portland problems, am I right? No matter what, or where they're located, I'll continue to crush on Falafel Mafia/Nura and can't wait to sink my teeth into my next meal!
google avatar

Jules F.

Yelp
I still love this place, however I'm a little bummed - yesterday I ordered a takeout falafel platter with extra falafel (came to $17.25) and they didn't include pita as listed on the menu. There also didn't seem to be any extra falafel. Paying that much for a lunch that doesn't fill you up just isn't fun.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in Portland! Hands down the best falafel I've ever had. I love their falafel pockets & adding pickled red onion and beets to it. Love this place for lunch! You won't regret it.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
I had walked by a few times and was excited to stop by for lunch, since it is so close to my office. It was super busy, but the line moved along quickly. I was with a few people and we were lucky to snag a table in the nice sized, clean, and well appointed dining area. One of the great and polite staff brought us our food. I'll start with wow, the food is very pretty! Fresh, aromatic, bright! Makes you want to dig in. So I did. The flavors were amazing! Great textures and smells and taste! I was not disappointed. Which leads me to why I didn't give 5 stars... the portion/price comparison is a little off putting. The portions are pretty small for the price tag.
google avatar

Stefani F.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in Portland! HIGHLY recommend to anyone and everyone looking for a great spot to eat some delicious food! Best falafel I've ever had, hands down. And the hummus is just so creamy and flavorful, it's hard to beat. Fell in love with Falafel Mafia when I first moved to Portland and I was thrilled when they announced they would be opening Nura! Let me tell you, it does not disappoint! Have had the falafel bowl twice in the past (forgot to take a picture) and tried a falafel pocket for the first time yesterday. Each time I am amazed by how fresh and flavorful the food is. Menu rotates regularly for the hummus bowls and a special pita pocket, keeping it seasonal and exciting! Definitely a Portland must-have!
google avatar

Michiko L.

Yelp
The falafel salad was great! The falafels were not dry but just right. Sorry, so hungry, I didn't get a picture. Would highly recommend
google avatar

Ryan N.

Yelp
Welcome to monument square!!! Clean aesthetic. Lots of seating options. Music is a *tad loud but they play rocking sounds similar to Theivery Corp tunes. It may hav even been Theivery Corp. Falafel pita pocket-DELICIOUS. Fresh. Loaded with cukes and tahini. Amazing falafel. Amazing pita. Great hummus. Tomato a bit "eh" Would absolutely return. Nice staff. $10 is a killer price for fresh food.
google avatar

Eva H.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the food here! This is the new "it" place it seems for lunch - altogether it took about 20-25 minutes from standing in line to receiving food, I didn't mind as I was with a friend. The falafel is delightful - not dry at all like much falafel can be - and I believe has spinach in it. The hummus bowls, while very Instagrammable, are a bit overpriced. $13 for hummus and a few pieces of sautéed cauliflower with a pita is just too much for something appetizer-esque. Go with the falafel pita - they really stuff it full for $10. Flavors were deep and complex, and the ingredients were super fresh. I found everyone working there very polite and saw a few examples of great customer service during the wait. From what I can tell, the entire menu appears to be vegan.
google avatar

Brianna B.

Yelp
Amazing falafel and shawarma fries!!! A must stop for lunch in Portland. Extremely fresh and reasonably priced.

Tanya R.

Yelp
Best Hummus and falafel ever! The bread is amazing as well. With they had a baba ghanoush. The fries used to be fabulous, but not so much anymore.
google avatar

William K.

Yelp
Everything is fresh and spiced perfectly. My wife and kids are vegan and gluten-free. We had the chicken schwarma pita, falafel salad and fries. Friendly service and great informal but clean and fun atmosphere. Good for families with kids.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
I savored every second of this meal, it was unreal. I'm a huge fan of Mediterranean food and wanted something quick for lunch, which is how I came across Nuraportland. I'm not a huge falafel fan, but thought I'd give it a go. The falafel was moist and flavorful, you must try it for yourself. Everything was 11/10. It's similar to cava, but BETTER. If you're looking for a quick and cost effective meal this is a must. I'll be back
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
WOW this spot is a hidden gem!!! You MUST try the falafels!! I got a falafel, and went traditional with added pickled onions, and pickles!! Soooo good. The sauces are AMAZING and must add or try and sauce.
google avatar

Arpi P.

Yelp
The best Mediterranean food I ever tried. It is so fresh and tastes amazinggggg.... I would definitely visit the place again when I am in town or will make a trip just to taste the food here. I would recommend trying out the eggplant and falafel pockets..was bursted with flavor and fresh salad.

Susan Y.

Yelp
Does a bowl of Delicious- light, fluffy Hummus with falafel, pomegranate seeds and nested in baby greens sound good? It should. It's stinking delicious. Yum. Two thumbs way up.
google avatar

Will S.

Yelp
We've had Nura delivered twice in the last month and the food has been spectacular each time. The shawarma fries are divine. The shawarma is divine. Everything is divine.
google avatar

Crys S.

Yelp
Even though I have had food from the truck many times, I had never personally been in the restaurant until recently. The situation the world currently faces means only the staff was in the building but under normal circumstances it would likely fit 15 people comfortably. I placed my order when I walked in-and-in less than 10 minutes had everything in a bag ready to go. It is very easy to ask questions and customize things. That has been true every visit I've made to their food truck as well. The quality of food makes it very easy to forget these items are vegetarian and gluten free in many cases. My kids significantly prefer these French fries to any other! The staff are very friendly and helpful. I hope they stick around for a long time to help remind us that healthy food can often be more delicious than any other option.

Kimberly O.

Yelp
We don't often go out for lunch, but we stumbled across this place and have only wonderful things to say. The decor is tasteful, includes some local flair and the place is sooo clean! The food was outstanding, we had the chicken and beef schwarma pitas, the fries and a mint limeade. Everything was delicious. Would absolutely recommend.
