19 Best Restaurants in Bali, Offering Indonesian Classics, Vegan Tasting Menus, and More

"Nusantara is the sister restaurant to Locavore, once named Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. While Locavore is a more blockbuster contemporary affair with watertight reservation openings, the more casual Nusantara (Javanese for “archipelago”) showcases the distinct regional tastes of Indonesia. The space is full of woods, traditional print pillows, and rattan partitions, making you feel as though you’re being treated to an Indonesian home-cooked meal. With dishes inspired by Sumatra, Sulawesi, Javam and beyond, Nusantara is a palatable journey of the 17,000-island nation and its provincial cuisines. Whether ordering small plates like stir-fried banana blossoms with sliced garlic, shallots, and chili of North Sulawesi or mains such as the smoked, spiced octopus wrapped in banana leaves of West Bali, you’ll likely find the food to be novel, well-executed and—above all—delectable. Original cocktails keep things on-theme with local ingredients such as pandan leaves, kayu manis stems, and lemongrass." - Regan Stephens

A top notch restaurant offering great service, and a diverse set of Balinese flavors that leaves you wanting for more. We were initially a little overwhelmed by the multiple sets of menus, but with a little help from the waitress, we were able to narrow down to a few manageable items. We had the sampler platter, chicken curry, chicken wings and a few other items. Our main impression was diversity, balanced. While the cuisine tends to be on the spicier side, the flavor was not overpowering where that’s the only thing you taste. I especially appreciated the sampler which, while smaller in size was huge on flavor. It gives you a peek into what the island has to offer. The curry chicken also brings back a lot of memories — especially if you have spent some time in Singapore. Having just arrived into Ubud, we appreciated the flexibility and hospitality of the servers that accommodated our schedule and our bags. A must stop on your trip to Bali/Ubud — can’t wait to return!

Fantastic Indonesian food restaurant, this place was recommended by our resort, and it turns out really good. The main thing here is the quality of the food and the service staff were fantastic. The restaurant setup was just ordinary. We ordered the set menu for 4. One of us is allergic to crustacean and no problem at all. The service staff was so helpful to offer alternatives to the person who had the allergic. The foods were incredibly good. Every dish was delicious and cooked to perfection. Highly recommend this place if you are in Ubud.

Another restaurant venue from the same group of Locavore, in a more casual dining ala carte style. Dishes are based on many different regions of Indonesia hence the name nusantara. Food was very yummy, beautiful, and service was also great. Portions are not stingy.

If you can only visit ONE restaurant in Ubud, it is this one. This restaurant features famous dishes not only from Bali but all across Indonesia with the freshest ingredients and herbs. Their drinks were amazing too. We did a la carte because we wanted to try dishes not on the set menu and it was great. Beware they are not shy about using chilis appropriate to the Indonesian taste buds so make sure you tell them to reduce the spice if you can't handle it. The food was all so tasty and unique and they explain everything in detail. It seems like it's reservation only so make sure you reserve a spot online well in advanced. Highly recommend this restaurant in Bali if you try nothing else.

Simply could not find fault with anything. The food was divine and the service was impeccable. I loved the attention to detail and care shown by all the staff. The dining is family style - which they explain and make recommendations based on your preferences. There is a depth of flavour in similarly sounding dishes that I had not experienced before. Highly recommend it!

We were looking for authentic Indonesian food after a long warm morning in the Ubud area - in a comfortable airconditioned setting! A local friend recommended Nusantara and we just about made it before the last order. What a relief and delight! A range of options including a set menu which we were not too keen on. Decided on a la carte and chose a bunch of the 'smaller' portions + a couple of the larger ones. A real smart place and staff were professional and quick to respond to queries. At the same time they did not try and push any 'specials' or similar. With the exception of one of the 'curries' all was good. A must visit for folks and most certainly a return visit on our next trip.

Overall I would say the ingredients used for this place were all very fresh. All the dishes we tried were well done, but nothing particularly stood out for us. Service and ambience were perfect - super attentive and helpful.
