19 Best Restaurants in Bali, Offering Indonesian Classics, Vegan Tasting Menus, and More

"Nusantara is the sister restaurant to Locavore, once named Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. While Locavore is a more blockbuster contemporary affair with watertight reservation openings, the more casual Nusantara (Javanese for “archipelago”) showcases the distinct regional tastes of Indonesia. The space is full of woods, traditional print pillows, and rattan partitions, making you feel as though you’re being treated to an Indonesian home-cooked meal. With dishes inspired by Sumatra, Sulawesi, Javam and beyond, Nusantara is a palatable journey of the 17,000-island nation and its provincial cuisines. Whether ordering small plates like stir-fried banana blossoms with sliced garlic, shallots, and chili of North Sulawesi or mains such as the smoked, spiced octopus wrapped in banana leaves of West Bali, you’ll likely find the food to be novel, well-executed and—above all—delectable. Original cocktails keep things on-theme with local ingredients such as pandan leaves, kayu manis stems, and lemongrass." - Regan Stephens

Nusantara is a gem in Ubud, offering an atmosphere that is both elegant and inviting. The space blends modern design with touches of Indonesian tradition, creating a warm yet refined setting that immediately sets the tone for a special meal. The staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive, striking the perfect balance between professionalism and genuine hospitality. The family-style concept is a highlight, allowing guests to share a variety of dishes and experience the breadth of Indonesian flavors together. Each plate was beautifully presented, with the crispy duck standing out as a true masterpiece, perfectly crisp on the outside and tender within. Nusantara is an inspired alternative dining experience in Ubud, seamlessly combining authenticity, creativity, and a sense of togetherness. Highly recommended!!

We opted for the set menu, and gave notice of an allergy on the booking request. Staff were knowledgeable about shellfish allergies and the kitchen prepared alternative starters and sambals for my friend- really fantastic service! The food was absolutely divine from start to finish. We both agreed that the tuna dish was one of the best raw fish dishes either of us had eaten. A great spot for foodies, or for date night. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the open grill kitchen at the front creates a great atmosphere. The excellent food, service and atmosphere make it worth the price tag.

Total hidden gem in Ubud. Nusantara is a cozy little spot that showcases the depth of Indonesian cuisine. Think fiery sambals, fall-apart rendang, and vibrant veggies, all beautifully plated. The team is warm, sharp, and genuinely excited to walk you through the regions and spices—service that feels personal without being fussy. Cocktails and zero-proof drinks highlight local botanicals, and vegetarians are well looked after. Go with friends, order a spread, and let the flavors take you on a tour across the islands. I’d come back in a heartbeat.

Third time eating here at Nusantara spanning over a decade since my first, and it’s never failed to deliver. Great food, ambience and hospitality. Strongly recommend the beef ribs, stir fry papaya leaves with banana blossom, crispy babek, prawn curry and the chicken. The chicken dish was very unassuming but boy did it deliver. Managed to retain all of its moisture. Definitely looking to return when I’m back at Ubud! Remember to make reservations!

CocoNuts! Nusantara truly delivered on their promise of elevating classic Indonesian dishes. The chef’s menu is unique, with a wide variety of traditional Indonesian cuisine presented with refined cooking techniques, fresh ingredients, or simply done differently. From curries and soups to snacks and cocktails, everything was executed perfectly. The lamb curry was a standout, and the coconut soup still haunts my dreams. If you’re looking for a culinary experience that won’t disappoint, this is it. The service was excellent, and the private dining room was perfect for an intimate vacation dinner. They are nuts and truly coconuts.

Extraordinary Indonesian food experience! My favourite Indonesian restaurant in Ubud. I came here twice and I had a lovely experience. The atmosphere is so welcoming and I loved the open concept kitchen and grill. The people are so nice & polite. They made you feel at home. The food is absolutely delicious, fresh and tasty. The quality was so good! Loved everything I ate. Definitely will be the first restaurant I would go as soon as I come back to Ubud!

Amazing experience at Nusantara by Locatore. Great food and service. Local dishes cooked with a refinated approach, beautiful flavors, high-quality ingredients. I would definitely recommend. Our best meal in Bali! It is expensive for Bali standards but very cheap quality-wise for European standards. Worth it!

A taste of Indonesia. Before coming to Bali, I have never tried Indonesian food, and if you are like me, this is the best place to get a taste of it. The dishes are from different regions of the archipelago. Truly fantastic. The cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks contained fruits and alcohols I have never heard of before, and I must say, they were very interesting but in the best way possible. After that we got a tasting platter of different delicacies, which were absolutely fantastic. The small dishes and the mains paired up very nicely and they were a real burat of flavour. And the desserts nicely finished off the meal with the use of coconut milk and lighter flavours. Truly a dinner experience.
