NuVegan Cafe Petersburg

The owners and servers are so very nice. The food is excellent. The atmosphere is chill and happy. The drummies are SO good. We also tried the vegan cutlets. Yum. The sides are nice too. Even if you are not vegan the food is great. Give them a try. Of all the restaurants in the Richmond area we chose NuVegan in Petersburg for our wedding anniversary meal.

First time for everything and they didn’t disappoint. The welcome was welcoming, the food was solid. I really appreciated that the cinnamon roll wasn’t ridiculously sweet - such a nice balanced treat. The drumsticks were fantastic, flavorful, crunch, filling. The greens were valid, no complaints. Now - the Mac it could’ve used a wee bit more love & something about the texture threw me off at first but it was GOOD. I will definitely go back for the steak and mushroom mashed potato meal, it’s 2 hours from me but i would definitely make the drive for quality vegan food. I do appreciate that it’s also black owned - absolutely love to see it! I also must add, getting the food is so nice and quick. Can’t beat that! Would definitely recommend, vegan or not. You outta visit. Circled back on 08/17 to try the pepper steak. With the yams and the collard greens 9/10 definitely recommend those 2 sides. On my third visit I’ll try the country fried steak!

Hella friendly staff, and supremely delicious food. The burger was incredible, and the chicken sandwich just as scrumptious. The desserts are well made, sides like fries, Mac and cheese and collard greens are tasty, and just overall a stellar place to get vegan grub in a location not known for catering to that style of eating. Love love love this place.

As a birthday treat, we decided to drive to this NuVegan location. We're very glad we did!!! At least on this day, the hospitality was there and the food was delicious 😋. We watch how they greated everyone that came into the restaurant. Super cool. Anthony was patient with us as we taste samples to make up our minds. We thoroughly enjoyed the greens, fries, and fish. The bathroom was clean and the ambiance was cozy and chill. We also enjoyed our conversation with Vonettia. She very friendly and funny. Her and Anthony made sure we were comfortable and enjoying ourselves. We plan to return to support this Veteran owned business. 🪖

We stopped in here on our way home from our family vacation because we googled "vegan food near us" and picked the best looking spot on our route home. It was great! I got a chicken sandwich (I believe it was seitan?) With their cashew Mac and my husband tried the lasagna. We plan on visiting again in October. It is very hard to find non commercialized vegan food and one gets tired of impossible burgers after a couple days. Service was terrific, the lady who took our order was super nice and we got a peta approved (lol, super cute) coloring book for our little one. The bathroom has the touch of someone who really cares about the place. Whoever put the decor together did a wonderful job. Thanks guys! We will be back on our next trip through Petersburg.

We love NuVegan Café! Such a fresh, original concept for vegan dining. The food was absolutely delicious, and the team was super friendly and welcoming. The setup reminded us of a vegan twist on a Sonic Drive-In—complete with a tented outdoor seating area that gave it a fun, laid-back vibe. We ordered the garlic kale, mac and cheese, and a prepackaged drink—and *WOW*. Still can’t get over how good that vegan cheese was. Creamy, flavorful, and honestly better than some dairy versions I’ve had! Can’t wait to go back and try even more. Highly recommend for anyone—vegan or not—looking for flavorful plant-based food with great energy.

Phenomenal Vegan food and customer service. I had the Crab Cake, yams, and collards. Every bite was delicious and I will be returning whenever I am in the area. Must try!! 💯

I've visited the restaurant for the first time today on my way driving from Washington to Durham, North Carolina. Just a few minutes detour off my route, it's very convenient for Travelers. The food was excellent, and the staff couldn't have been nicer. Thank you, Miss Venetta, and everyone in the kitchen! I had the seafood jambalaya, all plant based, and truly up to New Orleans standards. On the side, I had garlic kale that was at the perfect point of marination, both in terms of flavor and mouth feel. For dessert, Miss Venetta's delicious zucchini, bread... Thankfully, not at all too sweet. I'm enjoying right now one of two juices they had... One a classic mixture of greens, the other was I think fruit and ginger. Haven't tried that yet. The former is delicious. The restaurant sources from third-party local makers with my meal, I had one of the several Poppi so does they offer. Thank you, Miss Vernetta, and your team in the kitchen. I can't wait to come back!

Food- Yams, not good. Too mushy, too much cinnamon. One note dish. Mac and cheese disgustedly gummy, dry and barely warm. You can taste almond or something that was off about it. However I bought some juices called Juice Sea LLC, cucumber lemonade and blackberry raspberry hibiscus. They were delish! That was the highlight ! Need to keep them in stock and let me know where to buy. The two stars are for the food. Juices are a 5 star.

Stopped by this morning with my little brother and yelp Bestie. We arrived at 11 right as they were opening so we were placing our order immediately and sat right down. I ordered the special which was a chicken curry today with rice and a side of chickpea salad, Brother ordered a country fried steak and he had the choice of mashed potatoes or rice so naturally mashed potatoes was the way to go. He also got a side of tuna salad. And Bestie got the crabcakes with Asian salad and a side of macaroni and cheese. The curry was good, but it wasn't very hot. Temperature wise. I did like the flavor though. It was a little spicy and a little sweet and overall pretty darn good. It only had carrots and maybe one or two other vegetable chunks in it, which I don't mind so much, but when I think of vegan restaurants, I do tend to prefer places that go heavy on the vegetables and not just being cool for having meat alternatives. I do really love my vegetables though. The rice had a couple of hard places, but I feel like that tends to happen anytime rice is pre-cooked and then served. It beats waiting 20 minutes for a new thing of rice to be made, but rice is never my preference when it comes to Pre-cooked food for that reason. I liked that the chickpea salad was actually a chickpea salad, and not just a play on chicken salad sandwich filling. Like how I make it at home when I just mash it and add it with mayo and stuff. Here it seemed more like an intentional side dish. The beans were intact and not mushy and had a really nice spiced flavor. The crabcakes were good too, and did taste surprisingly like crabcakes. They were nice and crispy and I did like the Asian salad, but it seemed pretty simple. Just noodles and a thinned out sweet chili sauce and some finely shredded veggies. It was tasty, but I'll probably opt for something that's a little more difficult to make at home next time. The macaroni and cheese was good and it sort of tasted like almond milk or oat milk. It kind of reminded me of an Alfredo. The country fried steak was spot on though. I cannot imagine how they got both the texture and flavor exactly right. The mushroom gravy was tasty although a little thinner than I normally like it to be. And the mashed potatoes were delicious. The tuna salad was also good. Very creamy. Overall, I will probably be back here. The food was tasty. It is a touch pricy, and not super convenient from where I live, but the country fried steak is worth the drive.

Vegan food with Southern flare! At the time of my visit, there was no dine-in option. Call in your order or pull in, park and someone walks out to take your order. I ordered the Rasta Pasta and it was good. The quality of food is really good.

The food was delicious! The service was amazing; such un uplifting atmosphere to pick up food or to dine in! I will return often!

What a wonderful surprise along the way in our road-trip. The ambience is very chill, The service was amazing , the drummies were so good! My mom( a non vegan ) loved them so much ! The sides were amazing as well. The Mac and cheese was so creamy! My son loved the savory beans and rice. We will definitely come back .

Sometimes in life better yet, monthly you should try something new. NuVegan Cafe has plenty of parking. I truly enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and staff interaction. I enjoyed the testimonial from a regular customer who spoke of her weight loss journey since changing to eating one vegan meal a day. It is set up cafeteria style so you have a variety of options. I ordered savoy beans, rice & gravy and chk'n drummies. I was surprised that vegan tasted so good, The seasoning of everything was amazing! But don't forget dessert. I tried the pineapple upside down cake. Who knew that eating healthy could taste so darn good.

Enjoyed our visit to NuVegan cafe. Many gluten free options. The black bean burger and collard greens were delicious. The owner was very knowledgeable about what was or could be made gluten free. She even mentioned the GF sweet potato brownie which was fabulous. We enjoyed live music during our lunch. I highly recommend this restaurant.

I'd been hoping for a vegan spot in Petersburg for years because I frequent the area. Stumbled upon NuVegan and was NOT disappointed. My honey and I got the black bean burger and kale salads. I love the garlic salad but I actually mixed them. We then ordered the drumsticks which were the best! They also brought out samples

I love it here! I was so happy when I found out they moved to Petersburg! The shrimp is so good! The Mac and cheese never misses and don't get me started on the vegan crab cakes!! The owners and staff are so welcoming! Can't wait to go back!

The restaurant was great! The staff were informative and knowledgeable about the food served. (Not vegan just like healthier choices). Thanks for the patience and providing healthy choices. The food was great! Highly recommend.

They currently have service where the waittress comes to your car and takes your order then brings it out. Youc an also phone in your order. This was my first time at NuVegan. My waittress was very friendly and made suggestions. Since going vegan 4 years ago, it is seafood that I miss the most. I could not decide between the shrimp and crab cake so my server suggested I get a split order. The shrimp had a texture similar to real shrimp and they were just crunchy enough. Had a subtle flavor and were cooked just right. The crab cake was fabulous! Was seasoned and tasted just like a crab cake. Seasoned perfectly. Loved the texture, crispy and moist at the same time. I was given a container of sauce for the shrimp. It had a nice flavor not sure what it iwas but almost had a sweet and sour type flavor. I am a big remoulade sauce fan for seafood so would love to try it with that. I got mac and cheese as a side. I wish I lived closer to this place( I live about 50 miles away). I look forward to my next visit. I really enjoyed my meal. The prices are reasonable for the amount of food that you get. If you are near Petersburg, definitely give this place a try.

My friends talk on and on about the chkn drummies and they are delicious. It's the vegan mac for me though. The crab cakes and black bean burger are delicious too.

I have been eating at NuVegan for several years now. They had a location in downtown Richmond, VA then transitioned to Petersburg. And I transitioned right along with them. They have some of the best vegan and vegetarian foods that I have ever eaten. The food is cooked to serve and taste sooo good. Being a vegetarian in Virginia (in this area) has not been easy. But finding NuVegan was like finding a diamond. The staff are extremely personable and very willing to accommodate your request. I decided to have a special dinner for my husband's birthday and they delivered the food to my home piping hot. I recommend that you call your order in advance as they get really busy. The chik'n wings (vegan) are the best, my husband absolutely loves them. Each and every dish taste wonderful and the pricing is reasonable. I would recommend this gem to anyone who loves vegan soul food, you will not be disappointed. I have shared the chik'n wings with my non-vegan friends and they absolutely did not believe it wasn't real chicken, and they loved them. So vegetarian/vegan or meat eater you should try NuVegan, you will be pleasantly surprised.
