Modern Jewish Deli Beetroot Will Close Permanently - Eater Portland

"Before Beetroot — the sunny deli, market and bakery on NW Glisan — officially opened in August 2019, buzz was already building. Owner Sonya Sanford had an image of running a modern Jewish deli, with house-smoked whitefish, pickles, and dishes from Slavic countries and areas of Western Asia. Vegetables from Oregon farms would end up roasted in za’atar for cold deli salads, bowls of the Russian meatball-and-tomato dish tefteli would roll out of the kitchen next to bowls of matzo ball soup, and brownies would come swirled with tahini." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Yelp
We had the chicken wings and empanadas for appetizers, which were both out of this world!! We had lomo saltado, which was also excellent! I wish they gave plastic utensils with to-go stuff, as we got back to the hotel and had no utinsels to eat our leftovers with :( Ambiance was nice, and restaurant was reasonably air conditioned in the 90 degree heat. Vibe was very authentically Peru. Service could have been a bit more attentive, but also, they were super crowded when we were there, so it wasn't a detriment to our experience! Staff were friendly and welcoming! Parking was easy to find as well. Solid food for Portland!

Yelp
Ambiance is beautiful. Food is a painful...Portlandize *as stated by waiter) Kinda Peruvian. I eat Peruvian food regularly unfortunately... this was not it. Dishes were full of filler ingredients or cute without substance.

Yelp
Update!! Andina changed chefs (and menus) again a few months ago. Finally came by tonight and I'm so happy to have my old favorite back in tip top shape again! Service is still awesome as always, but it's was the flavor that finally returned! The scallop ceviche is delicious and reminiscent of the one they had a couple years ago that I loved. They have a duck ceviche now that's incredible, and the albacore crudo was such a delightful mix of fresh flavors. The halibut was good, but is a bit of a rich dish for fish. We couldn't finish it as we were stuffed by the time that one came out. Again, so happy to have one of my old favs back!!!

Yelp
Went on a weeknight with a group of 4 for happy hour. They have a good selection of food and drinks. The quality was EXCELLENT, everything was flavorful and well cooked. The only downside is the tiny tiny portion sizes. For example a plate of chicken skewers came with two (see photo) and a portion of samosa was one. I think the ceviche was my favorite and probably the only item priced reasonably. Between the four of us our bill was just over $200. The interior was gorgeous, dim lighting but didn't impact visibility. Overall good experience however would definitely reserve for special occasions.

Yelp
4.5 stars. The duck ceviche was delicious. I was so surprised that I liked a meat based ceviche but it's balanced (not so acidic as other ceviches in the past), the meat is tender, and the combination of the ingredients was a surprising hit on my palette. I also ordered the fried chicken appetizer and yuka chip side, and pot de chocolate. All are solid, as was the argyle sparkling wine. I tried the Sauvignon Blanc and orange wine but didn't like them. A two-people band was playing cuban jazz and other Latin American music. A beautiful spot with tall ceiling and beautiful Lighting. Server Austin was fantastic. I lingered for about 2.5 hours by myself and had a great time.

Yelp
Overall was a great meal! The pork dish wasn't what we were expecting, but was really good despite being very heavy. Hmm... Collagen boost, anyone? Lomo Saltado was flavorful, with really good garlic rice on the side. Yuca fries were too hard and dense for my taste. Beef heart was an acquired taste, just sadly, not mine. Very lively restaurant with live music and attentive service.

Yelp
The food, seasoning, service and ambiance was wonderful. Complements to the chef and his staff. The whole experience was fantastic. Henry was excellent serving and attending us, he was friendly and very knowledgeable with all the food and drinks, thank you for making our anniversary celebration so special.

Yelp
3.5/5 stars I will start with saying I came for a private group dinner, not individual dining. We sat in a private room in the basement that had a single private restroom around the corner. Service was very attentive for water but I do wish they had asked us for drink orders more than once for those of us not enjoying wine. I also wished that they had kept some of the plates on the table when they switched out courses. It would've been nice to have some potatoes and salad with the meat, which was served the next round. There was quite a bit of time between the different parts of dinner being served. Unfortunately, that also meant that the entire main entrée service was lukewarm, if not cold. We were served fried fritters and beet skewers for appetizers. The Ensalada con Kiwicha served at the table was fairly basic and uninteresting. I enjoyed the Papa a la Huancaina but there were far too many olives on the platter. The side of rice was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. The vegetables, on the other hand, were bland and undercooked. My table commented how the carrots seemed to be raw. Lomo Corto a la Parrilla had good flavor but was very very chewy, to the point where I found it offputting. The Pasta Al Pesto was great and very interesting- the mushrooms added a nice element of texture to the dish. The Pollo a la Brasa was delicious as well- perfectly cooked and the salsa it was served with was a huge hit at the table. We were served panna cotta and cookies for dessert- which were alright but nothing I'd think about again. I was a bit bummed about this experience because Andina has been on my go-to list for quite some time, but I'm glad to have gone and will continue to explore the rest of the Portland food scene.

Yelp
One of the best drinners We've had while traveling through Portland. This place was recommended to us by a local bartender and I'm so glad we came in. Every single item we tried was 10 out of 10 from the drinks to the food. The service was also top tier. I highly recommend trying out Adina and you have to get the ribs. We will definitely be back on our next trip to Oregon.

Yelp
A great spot for a celebration if you love (or want to try) Peruvian food! It is a very beautiful restaurant that feels like a place you go to for a special ocassion. The lomo saltado was delicious - I really apareciste that the rice comes on the side so you can add in as you see fit. The beef heart was fun to try for a first time but the whipped beans stole the show! So delicious almost like hummus. The cocktails were yummy too and the seasonal ice cream was very inventive. It is a bit of a louder restaurant so be mindful of that if you're trying to have deep conversations. Service was great!

Yelp
Delicious and wonderful staff! Vegan friendly. Ordered the bean puree and the yuca fries. The green sauce was stupid delicious and highly encourage you to order that and put on everything including your fingers. For entree we ordered the mushroom quinoa which was delicious and filling. The bread from the bean puree deserves its own shoutout! Colleagues ordered the ceviche and chicken skewers and enjoyed them both!

Yelp
3.75 stars. So it has been a couple of months since I went here so this review might be a little stale. The menu changes fairly consistently so whatever I may have liked very well may no longer be on the menu. And items that didn't leave much of a memory are probably gone anyhow. You get the drill. This isn't your first rodeo. Apparently, this was my second one. Or at least it was a second date, and Andina isn't a terrible place to take one. The restaurant is rather grand in the inside, the Peruvian focus lends a touch of exotic without scaring off anyone's palate, and of course the quality of food is quite good. We wanted something a bit light and veggie forward so we ordered a cauliflower dish that ended up soaked in a decadent sauce. Was it tasty? Yes. Was it light? Not so much. On the other hand, I was rather insistent on a mushroom seaweed soup which turned out to be exactly the type of light appetizer we were seeking. On the mains, however, I ordered a seafood tomato soup that surely contained fresh and delicious shrimp and clams, but suffered from a rather pedestrian base. My date's chicken thighs, on the other hand, were quite delicious. This probably sounds like a hit or miss three star review, but we did order dessert, and I don't know what it is about Portland, but damn, I've had some incredible desserts out here, and Andina was no slouch. We split a lovely tres leches that was soft, delicate, sweet, and modern all without losing the traditional flavors that have made it such a classic. There is nothing that was missing from this tres leches. It was absolutely outstanding. Overall, this is definitely more of a higher end restaurant with decidedly romantic vibes, and is probably a great choice if you aren't trying to take your taste buds on a super exotic adventure and still want a quality dinner.

Yelp
It has been over a year since l'd been to Andina. It used to be one or my favorite places to go when celebrating with it's slightly upscale ambiance. Sadly it seems the restaurant has a new chef as of this year and some of the element has changed. It's lost a bit of its tapas style menu. Most of the food was still delicious and honestly would be back at some point just for that carob butter with toast. Their menu does change quite often so there's a chance some of those dishes will come back. Such as more empanada options and their skewers.

Yelp
Vegetarian review: - mushroom toast: tasty and sharable. The mushrooms were great- grilled or sautéed or something, but savory and warm. Sauce was creamy and really made the dish. Bread- soft where it should be soft, and crispy where it should be crispy. - lomo saltado: replaced meat with mushrooms. Pretty good. Not exactly memorable, but pretty good. - yuca fries: the least interesting. Came with 2 sauces- mint and a cream one. Warm and crisp, but underwhelming. Service was great. Personable and pleasant. Parking wasn't as bad as I thought it would be (Thursday, 7.45pm). Street parking

Yelp
Came here for an anniversary dinner with my partner. Everything was amazing from the moment we walked in. There was live music playing, the employees welcome you with a warm smile, including the kitchen staff Food was delicious! Must try the Lomo Saltado and the spinach empanadas! Our server Doreen was attentive and had a sweet personality.

Yelp
Andina has an inviting and cozy atmosphere with a more upscale feel. We came in time to try the happy hour appetizers and got the shrimp ceviche and papas fritas. The ceviche was fresh and reminiscent of true Peruvian ceviche. For the mains, we got the gnocchi and the chicken dish. Both were bright in flavor and overall delicious. It was my boyfriend's birthday and they brought out free alfajores with a candle, which was a thoughtful touch we weren't expecting.

Yelp
it was my birthday and we had just come back from hiking Silver Falls. This place was across the street from my friend's condo. We came in a bit later, closer to closing but they still seated us. Our food came out pretty fast and everything was amazing! I couldn't make it to dessert but our server brought out a scoop of ice cream so we were able to eat that. Thanks for making the end of my birthday a good one

Yelp
First time in Portland and it was out very first stop - From the moment we arrived, this restaurant exceeded all expectations. We showed up as soon as they op and were seated with the happy hour menu, but our impeccable server, Vincent, went above and beyond to accommodate a few special requests without missing a beat. The food was absolutely delicious--every dish was beautifully prepared and bursting with flavor. You can tell how much care goes into the menu here. The timing is strict, which we actually appreciated because it kept the experience smooth and organized. The ambiance was warm and welcoming, making it the perfect place to relax and enjoy a great meal. This is the kind of spot you want to return to again and again. We'll definitely be back soon!

Yelp
They make great drinks and food. I love the atmosphere! You'll have to try Sexy Woman drinks.

Yelp
Andina offers a delightful dining experience with flavorful and well-executed dishes. While they are less Peruvian-forward in terms of spice or sauce, all every plate we tried was super flavorful and tasty. For four people, we ordered 4 appetizers, 2 main dishes and 1 dessert and we were satisfied. Service was outstanding. Our server, Alicia, made the experience even better by thoroughly explaining each dish with detailed description and ingredients, making them even more enticing before we took a bite. She also provided excellent recommendations, and our water glasses were never empty. Reservations are highly recommended for weekends, as the restaurant can get busy. Overall, a great spot for a flavorful meal with top-notch service!

Brittany B.

Yelp
My husband booked this restaurant for my birthday, thinking there would be live music but there wasn't any music playing when we went on a Sunday. The atmosphere was a little noisey. I ordered the spring pea tallarines. The pasta wasn't really flavorful in my opinion. The flavors didn't coalesce well together. The passion fruit limeade was amazing, but other than that the entree fell flat from my expectations.

Dina W.

Yelp
Went for a special occasion. Had reservations. When we arrived we were told they were having kitchen problems so they only had a small menu. Food was good. Staff mediocre. Music playing was so loud you couldn't talk to others at the table

Yelp
Atmosphere: Sophisticated, upscale without being dressy. Food: Loved the ceviche, which was probably the highlight. Salad was a big miss. The Lomo Salgado was a good portion size and overall pretty good, but the meat was a bit overcooked and frankly, I've had equally delicious Lomo Saltado from food carts. The Pollo a La Parilla was pretty good, but not cheap for chicken. Price: Prices are high for what it is. Granted, it's an upscale restaurant that is popular so no surprise but expect to pay more for the name and experience than for the best Peruvian food in the area. Service: Service was good. We changed our reservation multiple times and they were always very accommodating. Parking: Street parking.

Yelp
It's been awhile since we dined here, but I still have fond memories years later. I guess that's a good thing and a sign the place is doing things right. We really loved the interior space and the corner table we had near a window. The staff and bar tender were very attentive and kind. I don't remember what drinks, appetizers or entrees we had, but I do remember everything went well together and we left satisfied. We live 4 hours away but whenever we think of coming to Portland we will definitely come here. Truth...

Yelp
A place with great service. The ambiance of the place is amazing. It does stand out in terms of view from other places. The food was delicious. However it seemed a bit pricey. Besides that it's a nice place to go out for celebrations I guess. They have nice beers too from outside the USA.

Yelp
I visited Andina for the first time, located in the Pearl District, as part of a birthday celebration with a group. The staff was extremely helpful in coordinating the event, and the atmosphere was beautiful with live music enhancing the experience. Street parking is available, but I'd recommend making a reservation in advance. While the food was decent, I was hoping for more from a Peruvian restaurant. We ordered a variety of dishes, but overall, I found the flavors to be a bit underwhelming.
google avatar

Henry T.

Yelp
Service very very good As far as the food I will give a 4 stars. Great ambiance.limited menu which is great and very unique.

Yelp
Went to celebrate both our parents' 80th birthdays. We got there early and they were able to accommodate our large party right away. Food, drinks, and service was impeccable, well-presented, and flavorful. Do not skip out on dessert. The Pot du Crème with blood orange was heavenly!
google avatar

Rupesh S.

Yelp
Good food, but not as distinctly Peruvian as I expected. Service was excellent and the ambience was cozy / romantic. The drinks were clever and enjoyable. Can't go wrong if you want to enjoy something different in the Pearl District.
google avatar

Melissa N.

Yelp
Best Peruvian food I've ever had, and with such a nice dining experience. We made a reservation in advance so we were seated immediately upon arrival. We got a nice booth and it felt like we had our privacy so we can be present for one another. The yuca frita was a nice starter. The lomo saltado was delicious with tender meat chunks. I loved the addition of tomatoes to this dish. The arroz con mariscos was muah; scarf that down! Flavorful rice with a variety of seafood. I have had similar dishes at other restaurants and these plates at Andina were the best executed and tastiest versions! The sprinkles on top was when the owner came around to greet us. It was warm and welcoming, and a nice touch to our experience. I highly recommend coming here when you're around the area, or make the trip here!
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
Liked the vibe, especially all the big ferns. I really enjoyed the yuca frita and the lomo saltado. My daughter is vegetarian and got the quinotto. We were not fans. I really appreciated all the gluten free menu items, but would have loved to see a gluten free dessert besides ice cream. Server was very attentive. Would recommend!

Yelp
I've been a little delayed in my reviews. I may gorget the name if some of the cocktails but will remember the food and service. This place was great and amazing. A very short walk from the train stop and a very nice setting. There are two side this place. I captured the dining area as this was where we were seated. The food was delicious and the drinks were not watered down. Service was great.

Jovial X.

Yelp
Walked in without reservation. The restaurant is mostly seated. The service is great. I came here for some dishes recommended online, but they renewed the menu and took all the dish I wanted down. Under the recommendation of a waitress, I ordered Cebiche de Conchas - is an appetizer of the scallops. Tastes good with some surprise of tajin flavor. The seaweed in it is really tasty!! Lomo Saltado - good as expected. And the jasmine rice with it is really well cooked. Lemonade Maracuya - good passion fruit flavor drink~ said to be the most popular one. The two dishes is a little too much for one person, but definitely not enough for two. The price is a bit high (altogether $73 + tip), but considering the atmosphere ~ it's overall good.
google avatar

Dana H.

Yelp
Top to bottom one of the best meals we had in Portland. The drinks were exceptional. My husband and I had a few small plates to share and everything was delicious. We then shared a sorbet for dessert, and it was also fantastic.

Yelp
Visited Andina for the first time while visiting Portland, Oregon with my high school classmate. I have tried Peruvian cuisine once before, however this was an experience by comparison. My impression of the restaurant's interior was refined and elegant, yet soothing with lots of earth tones and wood compliments. The wait staff was accommodating and informative. The menu provided enough options without being overwhelming. My classmate requested a Brazilian caipirinha cocktail with passion fruit infusion. She enjoyed it so much she requested another during the meal. We had appetizers of beef empanada, chicken anticucho skewer, yuca frita. All three appetizers were flavorful, however my empanada had egg inside, which was not a menu ingredient. My waitress brought it to the manager's attention, as the other empanada on the menu mentioned it in its description. For entrees, I had the Lomo Saltado, thin portions of beef from the scapula region of the fore limb with grilled tomatoes, onions and potato fries in a soy based sauce with jasmine rice. This dish was superb. The Asian fusion brought this dish to perfection. My classmate decided on the Landroc Pork, a 12 ounce bone in chop with grilled cabbage and roasted corn cut off the cob, kimchi plus an aioli sauce. She loved her dish and also acknowledged the Asian fusion of her dish. We wanted to forgo dessert until we saw the menu. The Pot de Crème de Chocolate perfectly rounded out the meal. Our only complaint was the restaurant got acoustically loud at times. The dark chocolate custard, filberts and the marionberry jam is like no other dessert combination I tried previously. A return visit to Andina is a must on a future visit to Portland, Oregon
google avatar

Joey J.

Yelp
Food is above average, but not outstanding. The ceviche portion is comically small (the actual seafood part). The flavor for that dish is on point. Also had the arroz con mariscos, which was infinitely better than the gnocchi. Presentation of the dishes was excellent. Cocktails were good and atmosphere is nice. Service slowed down at the end of the night but overall still a very good experience
google avatar

Yelp
So many bold flavors! Andina has been a staple in the Pearl District and for good reason - delicious exciting cocktails, great warm ambiance, tons of veggie/vegetarian/vegan options. This is a great special occasion restaurant and I love their bar/lounge area as well. Service is always professional and friendly. Enjoy it!
google avatar

Yelp
First time in Portland but we had a fun time exploring and hiking - ended the night with a delicious meal at Andina. It is beautifully decorated and they have crated a relaxing environment with music in the background and very kind employees. We had yummy scallop ceviche (it could have used more salt and picante and some chips) and then we had the Lolo asaltado and the Gnocchi with yummy mushrooms. I was worried about being full with the sizes but it all worked out so yummy I left feeling very satisfied and full. I drank the lemonade and my partner a local OR guava cider which I am going to be looking for her in Seattle. I would come back especially for celebrations. I plan on coming back after finishing my first year of law school in a few weeks! :)

Yelp
Manager reached out to resolve the negative experience. We went back and it was fabulous. The new chef, along the new menu are most excellent.

Bill M.

Yelp
It's been awhile since we've eaten here so we thought we'd check in. The food was good, service better and atmosphere fairly unchanged over the years. I can't say it was worth the money though. They've obviously opted for a more high end menu which hasn't made the food better in my opinion, or at least worth the additional cost. The causas used to be a more straight forward affair that highlighted the potato, now it's buried under other more expensive things. Try the tomato on bread which gets at what we used to love, or better yet go to Casa Zoraya for a fresher, brighter and lighter menu and be sure to sit outside in the back patio to enhance the experience.

Yelp
I am very pleased to provide this review to Andina restaurant. I made a reservation for dinner last night to propose my girlfriend to be officially my girlfriend. I planned to have a bouquet of roses and some petals on the table for the occasion, and the restaurant kindly accepted and helped me with the setup of everything. It was a big surprise to see the great support that I had from the staff. It was a great night and all went smooth, as planned. I would like to recognize the effort on this, specially to Jose Rodriguez and all hosts. The food was amazing as well! Excellent cuisine! Thanks a lot, Andina.
google avatar

Yasmin A.

Yelp
Love my Peruvian food and this place did not disappoint! Everything from the limo to the shrimp anticuchos and the causa was great! The drinks were great and the ambience was very nice!
google avatar

Kareem A.

Yelp
This food was very very delicious. The empanadas were great and so was the paella + the yuca fries, and we loved the pisco sours. A festive feeling spot, there were a few birthdays happening. Service was quick and attentive and it was a fun place to be. The restaurant was cool.
google avatar

Lisa A.

Yelp
WOW WOW WOW i all i can say!! This place is a must try if in Portland!! The food was impeccable! We came here for a dinner for work and it was a crowd pleaser! The service was amazing we had the upstairs room and the bartenders and wait staff were so helpful and warm the ambiance was so cool! You felt like you were transported to Peru! You have to try this spot you will NOT be disappointed!! I will be back when I'm in town!

Julia R.

Yelp
Seems like the good reviews went too much to the owners' head. Too expensive for what it is. The first time I tried it, the unique ambiance was a surprise. Cool theme with the Peruvian food and cocktails. However, I went for a second time last night and was disappointed. $24 for bland macaroni and cheese with a fancy name, $37 trout dish (good but worth $21), $10 for mediocre bread, $17 for a good but small Pisco Sour. Service was good but ruined by the pretentious attitude everywhere. The bill at the end of night was $120 for two people -- ouch and meh. Not worth it. I'll maybe go again for the happy hour, but I won't be back for dinner. Money is better spent elsewhere.
google avatar

Jennifer A.

Yelp
I sat in the bar sampling dishes from the happy hour menu while I waited for the regular menu to be available at 5 o'clock. Both the bar and serving staff were very friendly and helpful with regard to explaining the dishes and recommending cocktails. Everything was delicious and I highly recommend getting out of your comfort zone and trying new things in this restaurant from both the happy hour and their regular menu. Their menu is rather likited but very interesting and the flavors are delightful.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
One of the best dining experiences in Portland. Was very pleased by the service, the quality of food, the cadence of our meal and the overall ambience. I was hosting some coworkers from out of town and theywere all in awe.

Yelp
I've been wanting to come here for such a long time and so happy I finally made it! The ambiance was very warm, dark, and modern. I got the beef heart skewer and it was delicious! Rich and unctuous, it made for the perfect savory bite to start off the meal. For my entree I got the chicken dish which was delicious. My server was so lovely and I even got a sweet little cookie at the end. I would definitely recommend this place both for tourists and locals.

Briana N.

Yelp
Vincent was amazing! Thank you for recommending the yummy fried chicken sandwich. Delicious.
