Detroit’s Best-Value Restaurants: An Essential Guide - Eater Detroit

"Halal food options abound in metro Detroit, but this newcomer to the scene brings with it a somewhat unique offering in its bountiful rice platters. A common sighting in New York street food, the rice platter comes topped with chicken, seasoned grilled lamb gyro, or falafel, yellow basmati rice, lettuce, and a creamy white sauce — all for about $12." - Serena Maria Daniels

🍽️ NYC Halal Eats, Troy: 👍 👍 👍 👎👎 Experience Halal Flavors at NYC Halal Eats in Troy, where the food received mixed reviews based on delivery experience. FOOD QUALITY👍: The food tasted okay, but unfortunately, the delivery experience affected the overall enjoyment. The fries became soggy, and the food didn’t maintain its intended texture due to packaging issues. SERVICE & HOSPITALITY👎: The service, particularly with the delivery, was disappointing. The food was mixed up in the box, and the packaging was inadequate, causing the food to arrive flipped and not properly organized. AMBIENCE & SETTING👍: The restaurant itself, while not reviewed in-depth here, likely offers a decent atmosphere. However, the main issue was with the delivery experience, which isn’t reflective of the in-house dining experience. VALUE FOR MONEY👎: Given the issues with food quality and delivery, the value for money was not up to par. The price did not justify the disappointing presentation and packaging, especially considering that some food items arrived in less-than-ideal condition. LOCATION & ACCESSIBILITY👍: Conveniently located in Troy, NYC Halal Eats is easily accessible, making it a good choice for those in the area looking for Halal options. However, the packaging and delivery experience need significant improvement to match the convenience. In summary, while NYC Halal Eats in Troy offers okay-tasting food, the poor delivery service, inadequate packaging, and soggy fries make it less than ideal for takeout. Improvements in packaging and service could enhance the overall experience and make it a more reliable choice.

Stopped into the new Farmington Hills location for a photo shoot and was incredibly impressed. Salem the Owner was enthusiastic, friendly, and served food incredibly quickly, all while ensuring high quality. Absolutely huge portions so come hungry!

Google
Went in with a group. We all ordered variety of different foods. All were good. Price is fair for pricing these days. We ordered the chicken quesadilla, few different platters and fries. Wouldn’t recommend the monster platter over the other platters. Only thing they add is 2 falafel and it cost more for platter. Not worth the extra charge. Chicken did have a lot of red coloring whether it’s from marinating or food coloring not sure. But it’s not bad. Rice was flavorful for the platters and proteins weren’t bad. No real dinning option except 2 tables outside. So if you come you might have to do take out. Overall I would recommend.

Google
Get the lamb and chicken platter ! It was really good with a medium spice that was perfect for me since I love spicy food . Food was fresh and decent portion size for the money . Flavor is a mix of Indian and middle Eastern

Crystal S

Google
The portions are generous and the food is consistently delicious! We always order two of the platters for our entrees and then share an item we haven’t had before for our app. So we got the Chicken Fajita for the first time, it was SO GOOD, definitely suggest trying one of the fajita options.

Google
I would not recommend going here. My brother brought home some chicken rice “platters” or “bowls” the other day and I was genuinely appalled and shocked. The portion was so small. Imagine a traditional takeout box with the one bigger divide for rice and the two small divisions for meat, veggies, etc. The platter/combo is only the half divided portion filled, with nothing else in the box. And that half section was not even filled all the way. Why am I paying $12-$13 for half a takeout box. I felt absolutely scammed. It feels and looks like, in my opinion, that this place has gone downhill. You might want to try finding another place to eat that has bigger portions. *** please see picture for portion idea we received

Google
I found this place on Instagram. I will be back to try more. The Philly steak is good, but the chicken sandwich is great!

Google
This place has fallen off and the food portions have changed while the prices stayed the same. The first picture is a picture of the fajitas in february and the second picture is of the fajitas now. They used to come with fries and now they don’t while the price still stayed the same. This place used to be good and fairly priced now it’s not, just trying to scam people.

Yelp
Excellent service and the food is great every time. I've eaten here about 5 times and was never disappointed. Great value. Highly recommend eating here!

Yelp
This was on my holiday bucket list. Past by it so many times and the reviews are always outstanding. Finally went in - just get the cheesesteak and then come back "like" this review. You're welcome.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is always consistent! Good portions for a good price and always quick carryout !

Yelp
Really good food. Got 2 plates on the way back from the mall and was very full at the end. Decently priced for the amount of food you get. Def will go back!
google avatar

Yelp
Had the chicken quesadilla and it tasted awesome . Came with a white sauce and a chipotle sauce. I recommend getting the green chutney sauce as well . I definitely recommend NYC HALAL EATS

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for a while, and I'm glad I finally got the chance to do so. I would classify my experience as decent. I ordered the gyro and chicken combo platter, which came with a generous amount of fresh and well seasoned meat. There were also delicious, crunchy fries on top. It came with ranch-like sauce, which was not bad, but an odd choice in my opinion - I would've preferred something more traditional, like tahini or tzatziki (neither of which are options). The rice was orange, so I was looking forward to trying whatever seasoning they used to get it to look like that. However, the taste was completely plain...maybe the color comes from oil they used to cook it? That was a disappointment, as was the fact that they don't offer the burghul rice anymore (I was told that they removed this as an option because no one ordered it). In addition to the platter, I ordered falafel on the side, which were seasoned very well and were not too greasy, dense, or dry - excellent! If I could do half stars, I'd give this place a 3.5. If I'm being completely honest, I would choose other middle eastern places like Mr Kabob over this one. But I do appreciate the fresh and tasty ingredients they use here, along with good portion sizes.

Yelp
Ordered ahead a mixed platter and loaded fries and was told 15 mins. Showed up after 20 mins and my platter was not prepared, they got it together quickly and was given cold fries that were sitting in the window. Platter was good because it was just made but how are you gonna give me cold fries? Used to love coming here but I'm gonna pass

Anna B.

Yelp
absolutely amazing food and great portions! make sure to try all of the sauces they have too (obviously the white and hot sauces are great, but the green chutney is chef's kiss). if you're coming from out of town, just know that there is no inside seating but luckily it was a nice day so we sat at the table right out front. would 100% come again!
google avatar

Anshula S.

Yelp
I always get the mixed chicken & lamb platter, and I would highly recommend giving it a try! The meat is well seasoned, and barbecued to perfection. I would suggest getting the optional white and hot sauce on top for extra flavor. Overall, the dish is very well balanced as it also comes with salad, rice, and fries. The service here is great as well. You can place an order after you arrive, and expect the food to be ready within a few minutes :)
google avatar

Tony M.

Yelp
I saw something on YouTube about The Halal Guys, and checked Yelp to see if there was anything like it in town. I came out, not knowing what to expect other than what was on their website. It's a small storefront, carryout only other than some picnic tables outside. I'd suggest ordering ahead, they appear to do a brisk takeout business, so I had to wait a bit. When I got home i opened up the containers, and it looked similar to what I saw online, with bright red chicken. This is not shawarma like you know it, and the sauces pack a punch. You'll need those to moisten things up a bit, although that might have been because of the travel time. The red sauce is really hot, even by my standards. The tastes and flavors were very different than i was expecting, almost like Indian food, but good. You get a good amount for the price. Give it a try, you might find a new kind of food to add to your rotation.
google avatar

Munib L.

Yelp
One of the worst places I have tried in my whole life Ordered a spicy burger which is actually a Seoul burger which is just Seoul sauce on a chicken. There is no seating inside so you will have to do a take out Service was fast which tells why food was a crappy Save yourself money and time and go somewhere else
google avatar

Saphace A.

Yelp
Fantastic restaurant with generous, shareable portions! My fam and I ordered a few things for carry out: lamb platter, chicken shawarma platter, falafel salad. The platters came with a nice helping of rice, salad, and fries. It was very filling! We split it among 4 of us and it took us 2 days to finish. Good flavors! Not overly seasoned or under seasoned. It tasted pretty good!
google avatar

Vy N.

Yelp
Absolute favorite halal food place. Love getting the mixed platter and the quesadilla is also amazing. Always order to go since there's not really anywhere to sit. Honestly think it taste better than the popular ones in NY, but I could just also be used to this taste.
google avatar

N A.

Yelp
Update. They downsized their portions and raised the price. Disappointed in that. Flavor is still ok. But not the best unfortunately. This "platter" seemed like a kid size or smaller. It had more fries and salad then the lamb and rice. A bit deceiving. Brother came through with my iftar. Regardless of how hectic orders were today he came through! Sorry for sounded like an ass. I know you got customers coming in left and right making orders and phone calls! Support local businesses. Best food if you had nyc gyro or philly. This is it. Not the same in another place.
google avatar

Nicole E.

Yelp
The threats continue from the owner, unreal. I am shaking with fear, as if. It's been 8 months and he continues to send me threats by DM. Another gem 4 days later. Stop wasting your time threatening me and focus on improving your customer service skills. Be careful it you don't leave a glowing review. The owner had issues with my 3 star and he doesn't get why he's a 1 Star, doesn't have a clue. I would give home -5 Star if it were possible. Poorly executed as an owner if you ask me. Should find a different profession than the food industry.
google avatar

Marv H.

Yelp
Food is consistent and good tasting. The service is always great and friendly. The place is clean and friendly.

Angela H.

Yelp
The food was very good and flavorful. The price point is excellent and the workers were polite. Will try again

Yelp
I was craving something fried and saw this place while I was browsing yelp and it looked exactly like something I had been craving. I scanned through the menu and knew that I had to get the loaded fries and some falafel. When I went in to order one of the first things I noticed was the large fridge on the side of the restaurant with a bunch of different drinks. I was able to place my order and while it may not have seemed busy it was a little bit of the wait. I was quite excited on the drive home as it smelled delicious. I always love the white sauce that they put on these sorts of dishes. The food was solid and was exactly what I was looking for. I would come back again one the same sort of craving hits!
google avatar

Annum A.

Yelp
I think it's an ok spot. Owners seem really nice and kind. My order was done in 25 minutes as estimated. I ordered the combo chicken and gyro platter which was decent but lacked a significant amount of white sauce. They were kind enough to give me extra chipotle sauce so I mixed that in and I found the lamb to be tastier than the chicken. The loaded philly was just too much cheese for me, and the bread was way too thick and stiff for my taste. I found myself taking out the inside pieces of the sandwich to eat it by itself. For the price which was about 10.99 for the sandwich which came with fries, it's a great price for the quantity. Might try again but stick to the gyro platter. Didn't really think the sandwich was anything to write home about.
google avatar

Audrey A.

Yelp
Will actually satisfy every craving you have, especially late night. Their taste is great and meat is always cooked perfectly. If you don't want your meal drenched in sauces though, ask for light sauce. Definitely underrated.
google avatar

Dawn H.

Yelp
I saw a tik tok about this place and decided to stop in. I ordered the chicken platter. It was about a 10 minute wait but the food comes out piping hot. It's a large portion for only $9. The platter includes a small salad, order of fries and chicken served over rice. I wish it was all white meat but the chicken is well seasoned and the white sauce is delicious. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area.

Julie M.

Yelp
Definitely nothing like the halal food carts in NYC. The flavor of the meats were just off. Too bad was hoping to like this place.
google avatar

Rachel T.

Yelp
Visited for yelp event. They did buy one and get one smaller bowl free. Tastes very good. I got sauce on the side so I can pour it myself. Generous portion sizes. Rice is also tasty. Seems like the rice and meat is gluten free because the rice doesn't have noodles in it and we have someone with gluten allergy.
google avatar

Ismael H.

Yelp
Good service and great food for sure. I get the mixed platter, burgers great and the subs are good as well.
google avatar

Brittney S.

Yelp
Food is incredible and so yummy. Restaurant uses Crescent meat which makes it certified halal. A variety of options and the portions are big! My family orders from here several times a month for carry out, and we are continuously satisfied time and time again! There isn't any dining tables inside, so definitely recommend carry out. There is a table or 2 outside the building, if you really want.

Tien F.

Yelp
First time there. Ordered the mixed gyro Very tasty and delicious. The atmosphere was quite NYish feel to it

David F.

Yelp
Best falafel sandwich I've ever had. I also enjoyed the baklava very much! Thanks so much!!

Cynthia T.

Yelp
Not a good experience... make sure you check your bill there are ways they overcharge certain people for things that should be explained....
google avatar

Joshua C.

Yelp
Great place for late night food. Everything is delicious I had the lamb and chicken bowl and it was extremely tasty

Chris D.

Yelp
VERY DISAPPOINTED IN NYC HALAL EATS - 5/4/2022 *Dark Orange Rice is the under cooked rice shown in photo* They had served me, my little son and other customers in front of me a very bad batch full of hard bits of rice. I have paid for 2 lamb over rice platters totaling $19.60 and I will not be coming here again unless they can replace my order free of charge! I was treated as if they wanted me to go away fast after ordering, family were arguing with each other, then I had tried asking for extra sauce and they had straight up ignored me right in front of my face. I do not recommend or will be returning to this place anytime soon as for they had cost me $19.60 for a horrible meal that had under cooked rice! Overall, very bad experience, was really wishing for good food but it's very plain food with bad rice. This place had used to be good a year ago but something had changed. Do better NYC Halal Eats.
google avatar

Nathan S.

Yelp
The food is quite good and the portions are definitely generous, however like many other places these days, I found the prices to be a little crazy for what you get. I know it's called NYC halal eats, but I shouldn't be paying downtown Manhattan prices for a chop cheese meal. I enjoyed the sandwich, but for the cost I think you can get a nice sit down meal around the area.
google avatar

Yelp
I am a big fan of NYC Halal Eats. The owners are super friendly and probably have the most authentic chicken and rice platters in the area. They also have amazing Philly Cheesesteaks. At least one of the owners is from New Jersey and he knows how to do these dishes right. Don't go anywhere else for the real East Coast street food experience. When I used to live in Manhattan, the Halal Guys on 53rd Street and Sixth Avenue was my favorite late night haunt for a platter of chicken, gyro, and rice topped with creamy white and red sauce. After I left New York City, I was unable to find good halal platters for at least a decade. NYC Halal Eats is the best place I've been able to find for chicken and rice in the northern Detroit suburbs. They do not skimp on portions and your platter will be topped with meat, vegetables, white and red sauce, as well as fries. The salad platter is basically the same as the halal platter except you're substituting yellow rice with lettuce. I tried the Philly Cheesesteak once. It is a very heavy dish, much heavier than what I usually eat. I will stick to the halal platters when I come here, but someone I know from the East Coast loves their Philly Cheesesteak and says it's like the real thing from back home. Also, it takes a much longer time to cook anything other than the halal platters, so I advise calling in your order ahead so you won't have to wait 20 minutes When I came here on opening week last year, I was blown away by the hospitality of the owners and the amazing food. The restaurant was very popular with teens and young adults because it's right down the road from a high school. Since the pandemic, unfortunately, I've heard that business has decreased significantly and I don't see as many kids anymore. Another reason why it's so important to support small businesses during this time. I want NYC Halal Eats to be around after the pandemic ends. This is a greasy spoon gem that needs to be saved at all costs!
google avatar

Kimberley S.

Yelp
Oh this place is heaven. I got a chicken quesadilla with white sauce and it was absolutely delicious. The negative side of it is that they actually charge you more if you don't get the vegetables on it and the two girls who were up at the front weren't friendly at all. But the food here is really delicious hopefully I'll go back and maybe there's new workers! Also be prepared to wait for your food at least 20 to 30 minutes so suggestion is to call ahead!
google avatar

Alina A.

Yelp
Great staff! I highly recommend getting the bowl with international soda. They carry Pakistani brand. My recommendation will be to eat the Philly cheesesteak right then and their
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
10/10! This place is the real deal. I heard about NYC from Chow Down Detroit and drove in from Farmington Hills. We tried the steak fajita, the chop cheese sandwich, chicken gyro platter and the steak fries. It was all delicious!!!! The woman working was really friendly and even brought my order out to me. I'll definitely be back.

Karrar I.

Yelp
food looks very good but doesn't taste very nice there's no taste is in the falafel or the lamb/chicken first time and last time trying it they have to improve on making some good meat and chicken
google avatar

Angela T.

Yelp
I tried this place when it first opened and I was a pescatarian at the time so I had the falafel. The falafel was very good and I think I would probably get the falafel if I were to come here again. The owner is very very kind and he even gave me some extra falafel for free. His son helps him out and he is so adorable! I came back a few days ago and this time I tried the gyro meat platter because I heard that it was better than the chicken. I think their rice has definitely improved from the first time that I came here. I added chickpeas, lettuce, corn and white sauce only to my platter. I've always thought that the platters were missing a dressing of some kind. Maybe that's because I don't get the hot sauce. I just feel like there isn't enough white sauce or flavor in it. Anyway, I went home and added some of my own toppings. I added sweet onions, kalamata olives, cucumber and feta. I think these are great topping additions. I know that they offer red onion, a salad with cucumber and black/green olives. I just wanted something else. Their toppings were fresh. I didn't like that now the food was put into a styrofoam container. I believe before it was put into something else (I'm not sure what they are called). Also, the gyro meat was very oily and I don't like oily foods. Therefore, I'd probably stick to the falafel. These were the only downsides. All in all, this is a great family business. They are definitely a hard working family and I think it's sweet how their son works so hard too even though he's so young. The people are all very kind and the food is very good. The prices are also great regardless of the increase, which I didn't even notice.
google avatar

Humza M.

Yelp
Nice New York style halal food. I really enjoyed the gyro! It was really busy at the time we went so they missed a few toppings on my order but fixed it when I went back in. I recommend this establishment if you're in the area and are reminiscing of halal carts. They also have a massive selection of drinks which was a super plus! There is no indoor seating! There are some tables outside however for the summertime!
google avatar

Whitney B.

Yelp
This place was super good. I saw it in titktok and wanted to try it. I got the lamb platter with white sauce. Super flavorful food. I would request more sauce next time. Veggies were good too. Service was quick. I'll be back.
google avatar

Kimberly H.

Yelp
Yummy! I saw this place posted on Tik Tok and immediately had to try it! Everything was so good! We called our food in and it was about 20-25 minutes. I got the combo platter (chicken & lamb) and it was so good! I got my daughter the veggie quesadilla and cheese sticks....yum! I would definitely eat here again!
google avatar

Angela C.

Yelp
This place is hit and miss. Their salito fries are my favorite item and they are either the most amazing thing I've ever eaten or granny mushy under cooked potato that's freezer, burnt, and no in between.
google avatar

Billy R.

Yelp
We absolutely love this place. They are open pretty late so they are the best option when we need something last minute. We have had their chicken fajita and both chicken and lamb gyros, both amazing and priced really well. I think it's 8.99 for a gyro and fries, which is a great deal because it's big enough to eat a couple times. Only thing that I don't care for their is a service charge, doesn't matter if you pay credit card or cash. If it ws a credit I can understand those are fees that are rising. But it's so good that we jst bite our lip and order all the time
google avatar

Bilal A.

Yelp
I've seen ads for this place, and was in the area, so I stopped by to check it out. Being someone who enjoys Halal Guys food, I figured it would be comparable, which it was. A few things that I thought they did well was their white sauce and the addition of the fries. I feel like these added to the taste and set them apart from their competition. The hot sauce was okay so I would say Halal Guys has them beat there. One important thing I didn't enjoy was the oily rice. Too much. This was disappointing and was critical is my rating. I hope this was just an off day and hope that it will be better the next time around.

Yelp
Burgers, Phillys, Burgers, and bowls. Everything here is done right and with high quality ingredients. I know this place is always on the list when I ask the family where they want to order from. With all the choices close to home, I have no problem driving 25 minutes for this high quality and delicious food. The place is family owened and operated and they are always supper friendly. Been here 20 times and on 1 occasion my order was missing an item, even though they don't offer delivery and I was willing to go back, one of the family was getting off work soon and offered to drop it off. Who does that?! These days it's uncommon to see anyone go above and beyond. I will always be a fan of NYC Halal, great people delivering consistently delicious food.

Josh M.

Yelp
This place had great reviews so I decided to give it a try, expectations were high, but not met. We got 16 wings with fries and loaded fries. Pros: Food was pretty good, wings were crispy and meaty. The loaded fries could be split between two people. Cons: Price - $46 for wings and loaded fries... not worth it. I could of gone down the street and gotten 4 orders of burgers and fries for that price. I won't be going back.

Yelp
Ever since I visited NYC the last time and had a chance to finally try the well known food trucks around 55th, I fell in Love with their food. Low cost and delicious and wished they would expand to Michigan. I've been searching for a place that was similar here and finally this placed opened !!!! The Halal Guys food stand in NY makes the best platters ant their white sauce just puts it over the top. This location thought a different name and no association is a tie for them. Well.......maybe better since it is closer : ) The combo platter was great......chicken and gyro meat (lamb) coated with the white sauce. Got the red spicy sauce on the side which they put in a little cup to go. Several of the other patron when to counter and asked for more white sauce which they handed over with no problem and no extra charge. NICE !!!! Also had the Philly cheesesteak with fries. Good roll and the steak was nicely chopped with no gristly pieces. The baklava looked great but turned out was just ok and a little dry. If you go here please stick with the platter or I will find you !!!!!!! JK order what you want, this is America. Oh and the owner is super friendly !!!! Food is awesome and I recommend all Yelpers and citizens of Michigan !!!! Two Thumbs Up !!!!!

Yelp
I keep seeing this place pop up on my Yelp feed, and figured it was time to check this place out. I love most middle eastern food, especially Gyros. I came here not knowing what to expect besides excellent food, and that's what I got. Walking in, the place is small, and you order at the counter. The menu has a nice variety of food items to choose from, mostly Gyros, hamburgers and a few other items. They have dinner sized portions and lunch sized portions, all reasonably priced. I went with the smaller, lunch sized Gyro since I wasn't starving. I was greeted by a very nice 10 year old who is more professional than most people twice his age. His dad was also working, which was nice to see an adult helping out! (both kid and dad were absolutely fabulous and friendly, by the way.) I placed my order for a Gyro and the portion was huge, even for a lunch sized order. It was a whopping $6.99, came with fries and I could barely finish it. Let me tell you, the food here is spot on. Meat was delicious, white sauce was amazing, everything was great. So why 4 stars and not 5? Well, there's two specific reasons. First, the napkins. They were those tiny worthless one's you get at the bar to put your drinks on. Literally fingertip napkins. While the white sauce was delicious, it got everywhere and I wish they had proper meal sized ones for those of us that need them. I went through about 20 napkins, no joke because they were so tiny. Secondly, they have cans of pop for a reasonable price in a cooler next to the register for sale along with bottles of water. I inquired why they don't have fountain pop, as it would be a fabulous addition to their already amazing food and location. The owner guy, who was awesome, said that he doesn't care for them because they get dirty easily and he likes to keep his place clean. Ok, fine I thought. But it would have been better to have the fountain pop machine. See, I notice these things because when you have a ton of food in front of you, things like napkins and beverages factor in. I really don't want to have to purchase 2 or 3 separate cans of pop. It's not because they are expensive, it's just annoying? Overall, I love this place. Tremendously huge portions, excellent pricing, amazing service and everything else was great. Fast casual dining environment with limited seating. Overall, a great gyro for our side of town. Go check it out if you can.

Yelp
Ordered take out to satisfy my nyc halal cart cravings & i must say its not bad and the portions are HUGE!!!! Me and my friend ordered take out and had the chicken & the lamb platter separately but I believe you can get the combo platter if you're ordering one. My personal preference was the lamb but I did feel there was more chicken (for the rice: chicken ratio), and the chicken was not bad itself. They come with a mix of salad & fries like most nyc halal carts do I did really like their white sauce but there was not enough for me on the platter. They didn't ask about our sauce preference when we ordered over the phone and I love red sauce which was missing from all this :( Overall: definitely will come back for my late night or hangover food options... or just for another dinner or lunch take out

Yelp
I've been here once before and it was great. Came back again after a very long time and tried their special "Big Sal Philly", which is what the lady at the counter recommended as I couldn't decide. I never in a million years woulda thought to put mozzarella sticks inside a Philly Cheesesteak, but man does it work. They really need to open more locations
