Stopped in for lunch on Saturday with a friend - it had been on my list of places to try - and we were not disappointed. I had the tofu with Nzuko sauce ($11.95) - a tasty tomato and red wine based sauce, nicely-spiced but not hot, and it came with mushroom brown rice and plaintains. All of the food was delicious and beautifully presented on a small platter. I also got a cold ginger tea, made on site, with no sugar, which the cashier warned me was super gingery, and he wasn't kidding, quite a blast of spicy ginger flavor, but I liked it.
My friend got a chicken wrap that he was quite happy with as well.
Nzuko's menu reflects not only the African roots of the owner and chef, but Caribbean and Mediterranean cuisine as well. Jerk chicken, Haitian-style pork, curries, hummus and falafel, are just some of the items on the menu that tell you you're not at a bland chain restaurant.
You order at the cash register, get a number, and when your number is called you pick it up at the counter that connects to the kitchen. The dining area is small and sparse, but clean and fine for a casual meal.
This is exactly the same set up that The Big Fresh, which previously occupied this space, had before they relocated to Route 9 and then sadly, later closed. Nzuko is a wonderful successor to that legacy - fresh, healthy, inventive cuisine from a variety of cultures, and locally owned - a great addition to the Framingham dining scene and a relief from the many chain restaurants that clutter the Route 9 and Route 30 corridor
