Long Beach’s Best Coffee Shop Expands With Ambitious New Food Menu - Eater LA

"According to the Pasadena Star-News, Altadena residents have managed to crowdfund $10,000 to help support a local cafe that was burglarized back in June. Google
This is an amazing hole in the wall, mom and Pop store, and health food location. They have everything! It’s clearly been around for decades, and the owners so sweet and kind. I got the soup of the day with tofu on top. It to go, along with some vegan mushroom jerky and bamboo toothbrush that I’ve been needing! I will definitely come back here! The prices were very fair, too.

Google
This is an absolute gem. I love them so much. I used to come here all the time when I still lived in the area. Their food is absolutely delicious and so healthy. Their staff are so kind and hardworking. This establishment is doing God's work and I'm so happy to know they're still up and running. I loved all their soups, salads, tofu stir fry, lentil meatloaf, & sandwiches! Def recommend this place to everyone.

Google
This food was fantastic!! Cash only so prices are more than reasonable! I have never felt so healthy while eating something so delicious I got the “ meatless meatloaf” and it was very flavorful with broccoli and lentils, I loved it, the greens were salted perfectly, and very hearty side salad was filling! I’m very happy and satisfied! ( also there was a tasty dressing to the salad that didn’t make the picture because I removed it to start eating and took picture after lol 😂)

Google
Love love love the vibe at this place!! its like you walk into a store from the 80's and everybody knows each other! The food is soooo delicious and John is the best vegan chef ever! he makes his food with love and comfort. He is genuinely kind to everyone and all living beings! 💗

Google
Man I googled this spot, never been. As soon as I walked in I felt a great atmosphere. I treated some Thai loaf with beans and salad. Omg busting with flavor and color. Great price and I'm definitely recommending it to Family and friends. I also want to come back for more. I also heard he helps the feed the less fortunate. So the place has all my support. Cheers

Google
Utterly charmed by this place. After eating an incredible, smoky bowl of split pea - which John (the owner) made on the spot on his gas stove behind the register - for $3.75, I bought some grocery staples and a few treats. While shopping, I marveled at the hand-packed "leftovers" stored in the wood-paneled refrigerator, on sale for a modest $1.75/portion instead of being thrown out. A business as personal and homey as Oh Happy Day is a marvel these days. I feel gratitude and respect for John and the space he's fostered. Will be back many times.

Ashley

Google
Reasonable prices for healthy, delicious, home cooked vegan meals. Owner is super sweet!!Everyday the menu changes. Definitely will be coming back.

Yelp
Wow what a find. I don't remember if it was Yelp or a different platform that pointed me in its direction, but I'm (possibly to a weird degree) happy-emotional after visiting and getting a plate of the homemade classic tofu stir fry. Stop reading here if my happy emotions will turn you off. Maybe it's the health, the peace, the humble store, how it's a world away from the consumerism so standard elsewhere. My heart. Physically and emotionally. Apparently this place doubles as therapy for a bebe vegan tired of stereotypical LA.

Yelp
Oh wow, so this really brings me back to my Oregon hippie childhood. It was clear everything was made from scratch. I'm guessing they've been using the same recipes for years, and they know how to make healthy food delicious. John was so nice. He even invited me to a vegan potluck at the store the next day. Next time, and there will be next time, I'll try bringing my own containers from home for takeout. I tried a combo #1 and could only eat half of it. The tofu stir fry, greens, and everything seems to be very low oil. I do think eating here more often would improve my health. I never would have found this place without Yelp. Thanks Yelpers!

Yelp
Best plate of homemade vegan/gluten free food I've had in a long time. This place is a small, mom and pop vegan natural grocery store. It's not Whole Foods. It's old school and rich with community. I hope to be back soon and often.

Yelp
This spot brings me such joy. It feels like you stepped into a Harry Potter shop with the floor to ceiling bottles of spices and potions in the very back... you can hear the owner greeting everyone by name and the shop smells like you want whatever they are cooking! I went in looking for kale- it was organic, really fresh and less than half the price of a Whole Foods/erewhon situation. I also left with the soup of the day- the owner added rice/barley and spices before adding soup, flavorful and hearty.

Yelp
Wow just had a great black-bean soup from this place. Non vegan but dont matter - soup was super good. quirky place as well and definitely worth checking out

Yelp
A hidden vegan and natural gem in Altadena. It feels like you transferred back in time when you entered the shop. It sells warm vegan food, and it is a grocery store, too!! They have the beans dispenser like a big grocery store, and I am amazed by the vintage refrigerator that is still in use! The items were fascinating. They have vitamins, a wide range of tea and all that. The man behind the counter was such a sweetheart. He showed me the vegan menu and asked a bit about my alma mater's sweatshirt. I tried the yam enchiladas. Don't let the look fool you. The taste is delicious indeed. The shop is located across the grocery outlet. Street parking is available.

Yelp
The owner John, is as kind as he can be. Always at the ready to answer any questions you may have. John and O Happy days are a treasure of the Altadena community.

Yelp
Excellent food and great service! John prepares fresh and healthy meals that change regularly. It's a super casual laid-back place withIndoor or outdoor seating areas.

Yelp
Been coming here for 8 yrs to eat the delicious, healthy, clean, vegan food. This place is non pretentious and just down home vegan friendly. The soup of the day or the stir fry are a filler. You won't even feel guilty if you get seconds cos it's all hella healthy food! The owner John is also the most friendliest, down to earth and welcoming person. Forget about the fancy overpriced veggie restos. Healthy food should be affordable and accessible for everyone and this is where you are going to find it! What are you waiting for? Come on out and support this local gem!

Yelp
This vegan restaurant within the natural foods market is a hidden gem. The White Bean Rice Soup was divine, and the Fresh Vegetable Stir-Fry with tofu over white rice was a delightful, flavorful combination that left me thoroughly impressed.

Yelp
I'm still a fan of this establishment. I go every week and stock on my organic vegetables. They also sell dry beans and pulses, rice, and other staple goods. His prices are reasonable and surprisingly affordable for organic goods. John, the owner is an affable chap! Always cheerful. The food is still as good as the first time I came here years back. If you are after salt-laden and fatty food then this is not the place for you. This is honest vegan food made fresh daily. I order take-out or eat-in at least twice a month. He also makes yummy vegan sandwiches. You always end up satisfied. SUPPORT LOCAL!

Yelp
Support local businesses! Love this place !! Been coming here for almost 4 years now. If I lived closer, I swear I'd frequent here everyday. Holy moly I LOVE THEIR SOUPS!! NEVER DISAPPOINTS Tasty and healthy vegan combo meals from $7-9. Super reasonable prices. They sell produce and vegetarian/vegan products. Lots of supplements, teas, snacks, and cool health products you can get here. Super nice and friendly staff. Jim is a very nice, older gentlemen. He is pretty much the main person working in the front.

Yelp
Just sitting here enjoying the heck out of today's white bean soup - succulently rich and peppery, flavorful AF! And all 100% vegan. Gonna call John the owner right now to express my gratitude for his beautiful cooking of these time-tested culinary delights. So inexpensive too. Have a fresh salad as well, maybe - everything is made with clean ingredients and love. Lucky Altadena!

Yelp
John always makes something tasty. I always enjoy the soup and greens. I eat here often

Yelp
John, the owner is the nicest guy! He makes you feel so welcome, and his food is THE BEST,BEST, BEST! To put in perspective, I'm not even vegan, and I went in for lunch, and after my errands, I came back and bought three more entrées to take home!!! The food is absolutely delicious and super healthy! Your body will say thank you! A neighborhood spot, everyone here is super friendly.

Yelp
Soooo fresh salad, and clean tasting vegan lasagna, and our non-commited sometimes vegan friend enjoyed the tofu stir fry. Interior has really neat old-school wooden shelving, super friendly owner ....menu is a series of index cards or owner will tell you over phone what's cooking.' Bottled GS Kombucha . During pandemic he can't allow seating inside but there's a few parks close by and shady streets to park on. Good hearted owner deserves our patronage.

Yelp
I sincerely hate having to leave this. Updating my review to note to other customers, prospective or present, about the hostile and abrasive treatment I received from another customer inside the store today in hopes that it will be addressed and/or taken note of. I know it's probably nothing that the store owner can help (I would never ask John, the owner, to intervene - in fact, other customers tried to do so today and were also mocked by the offending customer, who seemed much more intent on creating an unnecessary altercation than engaging in a calm discussion). I was waiting for John to come to the counter and noticed a trio of customers talking near the counter. I come in frequently and regularly see customers engaged in conversations by the tables and standing around the store, as it's a small space. Today, there was nowhere else to stand, as the tables were fully taken and one of the men talking had his bike with him. I stayed to the side by the entrance waiting my turn. John was assisting a woman standing with the trio, who kept up their conversation as she checked out at the counter and left. I looked to the gentlemen to ensure they weren't also in line, waited a bit longer, and they kept on talking. I then slowly went up to the counter to order, figuring that they had already been served or were just conversing amongst themselves (with nowhere else to stand or sit). I asked John for a recommendation to help with a current illness I'm fighting - after he suggested some food and I had been standing at the counter for a few minutes, one of the duo addressed me and became directly belligerent, stating that I had cut in front of them. I was so surprised - that was not the intention whatsoever, so I deeply apologized and let him know I had waited a bit and incorrectly assumed that they had already been helped. An honest mistake. Unfortunately, he kept going. All that was needed to be said was, "Excuse me - we're in line". Instead, he berated me and insinuated that I was an anti-masker (I'm not) amongst other items, and was getting pretty heated in front of the entire store. It got to the point where I felt I was being accused of racism, and it was deeply upsetting, as that's not who or what I am whatsoever. I tried to speak calmly to the gentleman and explain I made a mistake, but it kept progressing with anger. I knew there was nothing else I could do, so I quickly got my food and left before it got even worse. I have come in here many times (not as frequently as of late because I've been super COVID-conscious and have been careful with small spaces, but am slowly starting to venture back out without a mask on while I'm not working) and dearly love this place of community - and John. His cooking and care of the community is amazing, and I have come here most gratefully whenever I have needed to reset my diet or need some bonafide healthy food to get me back into immune shape. It has never failed. I'm thankful for the other customers who stepped up to assist today (I have been wracking my brain trying to place how I could have helped the situation, but it was obviously hostile since other customers stepped in to intervene). I was deeply upset and surprised by what occurred, as I've never once had an altercation with another customer like that at this place. What has been an abode of kindness, calm, and acceptance unfortunately turned into unmanaged and misdirected hostility. If this behavior is permitted at the store, and if customers creating this kind of situation are okayed, I regrettably won't be back.

Yelp
There is no possible way that this sweet store could have been more charming! The owner is so lovely and they have been supporting animal rights since the 70s! Love this place!

Yelp
I happened to be working in the area and the parking was right right across at grocery outlet and found this place just by chance. I decided to try it with my 10 year old daughter because I saw vegan cafe and was interested. I am not a vegan but I'm a "part-time" vegan. =D I had the vegan burrito and he added a bunch of lettuce and veggies and had this type of mustard sauce that was quite savory and incredible! My daughter (one of the pickiest 10 year old eaters you would know) had the lentil soup of the day and she loved it! The spices were just right and very light salt (which I like). Whenever I have vegan meals, I never feel bloated or heavy and these were hearty meals at reasonable prices. I don't live in the area, but I definitely saved this place for future visits! Amazing!

Angie S.

Yelp
It's the best vegan food ever. John, the owner is great! The restaurant is a staple in the community.

Yelp
I loved this place and the ambience. The food was delicious. I would support this small business and eat here all the time if I lived closer.

Yelp
Stepping into Happy Days Natural Foods is like a blast in the past. The owner John always cooks up hearty vegan homemade meals. If you find yourself in the neighborhood, stop by, say hi and support them.

Yelp
Healthy, tasty, a pleasure for your taste buds. I experienced euphoria..I asked for the soup that they only give to those that know. Fantastic. I feel like I did something good for my health. It smells really good inside this place..check it out.

Yelp
I feel horrible writing such a bad review because the older man behind the register was just the sweetest. Believe it or not, the rustic vibe in the store didn't scare us away, we wanted to give it a chance. I just don't want vegans to be misled by the good reviews like we were. We got two entrees, one lasagna and one enchilada burrito although it looked more like a lasagna than a burrito we looked past it, the food was utterly bland. We were so excited to try this spot because of the reviews we tried our best to eat it but after a few bites we ended up throwing it away because it wasn't getting any better. That was a waste of $22 because we had to buy another round of dinner somewhere else.

Yelp
I love this place because of how it reminds me of home. The food is absolutely delightful and delicious. The parking is sometimes a no go but it's worth it so I walk here and dine in. This is a place you go when you're not in a rush! It's a slow and love the scenery type of place.

Yelp
I was peckish and wanted to get a snack so I wandered into Oh Happy Days, and the name of the store is right- I could have exclaimed "Oh Happy Day!" I got some delicious peanut butter cookies from the brand Uncle Eddie's- SO delicious AND reasonably priced. They also had all my favourite kombucha brands, an array of spices and household goods that I will be getting from here from now on. What stole my heart was the soup that John served, so incredibly delicious and truly warmed my soul. It's food that tastes like home and a hug from your mom. THANK YOU!

Yelp
Try the food in your own community. Organic resturant and store.. John very friendly and well known and appreciated business man. Each day is a new menu. Try a combo and u get a little of everythg. Heard the burrito is really good. Couldn't try as all the ingredients were gone. Had a combo plate, good but would like a little more seasoning. Would return

Yelp
This healthy vegan food cafeteria and small market is an absolute gem. Food is great and filling, and so modestly priced that I usually get a couple bags of chips and a kombucha or apple cider just to boost the bill over $10 for the very kind elderly owner/operator. Had the potato-leek roast with steamed greens and salad today. 5 stars

Yelp
I am so thankful to have discovered this wonderful organic restaurant and market! The owner is really nice and very thoughtful in preparing each meal beautifully and with generous portions! This restaurant feels like a time capsule of when health food restaurants and shops had personality and were more financially accessible. The expensive trendier behemoths of WholeFoods/Erewhon might have a bigger selection of food/supplements, but here at this restaurant you feel the love in what you're eating and buying - and it's affordable - which is rare and priceless! Thank you!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious, healing, colorful food served patiently. Friendly and happy customers talked to each other in line. It felt like I was visiting the guru on the mountaintop.
google avatar

Alyssa S.

Yelp
This is my go to grocery store but what really makes them special is the simple, cheap, and insanely nutritious food they have cooking up or sold the day after in ready to eat containers. The tofu and greens and the Thai pineapple are the absolute best.
google avatar

Reyna L.

Yelp
This is a new favorite place to eat in because the food is amazing! This place is pretty small and maybe not that fanciest but I've been vegetarian for about 3 years and my mom a vegan for over 5 years and we were so glad we stumbled onto this place. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Carolyn J.

Yelp
I have grown to depend on Oh Happy days as an alternative to Amazon. Buy local. Support small business!!

Yelp
What an incredible place this is! It's a local business market that serves prepared organic, vegan food, along with many health supplements, herbs, snacks, drinks, etc. The food is home style, and is simply the best vegan food you will find. They don't have many plate choices to choose from, but each plate is perfection. Definitely quality over quantity of choices here. The owner, John Hopkins, is super chill and kind. I'm definitely going to come back here!

Yelp
John is the best human being. Thank you so much for your service to the entire community.

Yelp
The loveliest place in Altadena! I'm so glad that places like this exist... A big reflection of California's awesomeness. Service is great, John is super nice, patient and helpful besides being a great cook the food is really healthy and tastes very good, the prices are even better considering the portions. I had a very pleasant experience that I could recommend to anyone.

Yelp
This is a great place for real Vegan food. Very original HEALTHY food and they also sell a LOT of supplements and natural herbs. I have never seen a place with such a large selection of natural herbs. They also sell packaged herbs, but I always prefer natural. Stop by for lunch and surprise yourself.

Yelp
This cafe is truly a gem! Affordable prices for the most satisfying delicious food . Seriously the best hot food bar ever !!!

Yelp
My absolute favorite, all around wonderful. The food here is beyond amazing I'm so grateful to have found this gem!!! Thank you!

Yelp
Great place if you're looking to support a local vegan market rather than the larger restaurants. Excellent food and unbeatable prices for the food served there. Supplements and drink prices are comparable to other vitamin shops. I will go back soon. The owner is so nice.
google avatar

Tattiana S.

Yelp
I have no words! I'm vegan, and My friend showed me this little gem. :) he mentioned he goes here for natural remedies when he's sick or has something, he will come here and get some magic natural healing, and have the owner whip him up something that can help him. The food is amazing and for such an amazing price. we got the super, which allows you to pick 4 different dishes in one. For only $9.00 And then, I took a look around at the market section. He has full bob mill products for only $3.80 when most grains and flour of the same brand is $8 or higher in a regular super market. All the produce is organic and super affordable! You will find things such as Sage to burn, vitamins, to organic vegan pop tarts , to organic vegetable and fruit seeds. I will be taking my business here from now on for everything! Grocery days will be spent here!!!!! I love this place!
google avatar

Norma F.

Yelp
This places is amazing. The food is superb. Cooked daily with filtered water, stainless steel pots, and all organic vegetables and legumes. The food is fresh and tastes amazing. Every-time I come to Pasadena I make a point to stop here. Is not a fancy place with wife or ac, but the food is worth the sacrifice of those things .

Yelp
Go for fairly priced organic produce and dry goods. Go for a sandwich loaded with vegetables for $3.50. Go for bulk herbs and experiment making herbal teas. Go for education on nutrition and alternative medicine (ask to read the books John keeps behind the counter). Go for a conversation with an Altadena local about where to take a yoga class. Or go for a meal that may inspire you, as it has me, to embrace new ways of cooking and eating. In any case, you'll be nourished in more way than one.
