Stopped by Hope's Cafe (q.v.) now that they've reopened and it happened to be the first day that O The Bake Shop (I don't know how to make that little line over the "o" that sets it apart) had an open sign allowing walk-in traffic. Apparently they had reached out via Facebook and Instagram and had booked a lot of online orders and they were mostly filling those.
Which is cool.
But I love bakeries, and I love small local businesses and this was taking the place of Hope's old bakery space so I wanted to see what was going on.
Well, the selection is limited, and even then, most of that was spoken for. I'm not actually a big fan of Hawaiian bread (too sweet for me), but I ordered what they had available to share at the house. I got a Maple Bacon Walnut roll, a KimCheese Roll, and a Haupia Roll. All of them are Chelsea Bun-style, rolled like cinnamon rolls with filling and toppings as described.
The KimCheese roll was wonderful. Given my aversion to things too sweet, I was pleased by the (admittedly odd) combination of cheddar cheese, Kim Chi, and Portuguese sausage unexpectedly delicious. The fermented tang of the kim chi, brightened the earthy sausage and the Tillamook cheddar made for an excellent savory roll. I could see them as a lunch solution.
Maple bacon walnut sounds like a doughnut but it was not nearly as sweet as one might have imagined. There is a little sweetness but the bacon, the walnuts and the caramelized onions are the real stars. it is also a fairly savory roll but I thought that the bun was also delicious.
As one might hope, the Haupia roll is the star if you are looking for a morning bun. The coconut pudding which is the "glaze" in this case is nicely set off by the toasted coconut topping. I didn't get too much macadamia, but didn't miss it either. It might be something i DO miss if it was not there, but it was not obvious.
Perfectly baked, well-filled, absolutely lovely, all three of them. I anticipate updating this to a 5 star rating once they get their act together a little better and have extras for sale every day. Love the effort, with the website told me what Mochi Crunch snacks were, glad they are in business. You should check them out!
Sorry, a lot of things happening in TFG's life lately, so no photos. I'll fix that next time.
