The Bay Area’s Most Exciting Restaurant Openings | Eater SF

"The Lakeshore Avenue grocery and sundries shop expanded into a space-doubling 3,300-square-foot location that adds a hummus bar and a “New York–style kosher deli” with outdoor seating; expect house-made corned beef from the shop’s own smoker, homemade hummus, and a wide selection of prepared salads." - Eve Batey

Google
I’m hesitant to post this review because I’m worried this place will become too popular. The food here is so delicious! I had the hummus bowl with jammy eggplant, tart pickled onions, and fresh salad—everything was packed with flavor. The rugelach was seriously tasty too. I can’t believe such a great fast-casual Middle Eastern spot was right under my nose this whole time! Plus, Fabian was super helpful and friendly.

Google
I love Oakland Kosher Foods. Lots of items to choose from that are high quality. And the food from the deli is tasty and delicious. I recommend Oakland Kosher Foods.

Google
This place is fantastic! I was excited and surprised that there even is kosher food in Oakland, let alone really good food! I came out here for the day from Chicago to catch an A's game before they move out of town. I came here after the game and got a schnitzel sandwich, which really hit the spot! Then, I was even able to catch a minyan for Mincha & Maariv up the road at Beth Jacob! The customer service here is great, too. I'd highly recommend anyone in the area in need of kosher food to stop by here.

Google
The baklava was wonderful. They only had large pre-packaged containers of zaatar but they were willing to make a smaller container for us which was super nice. Could easily find everything on my list.

Google
Attended an industry conference at the Fairmont and told the group I'd like to get kosher food if possible. The hotel gets their kosher needs supplied by Oakland Kosher. They sent me menu before arriving so I could pick what I'd like for the 3 lunches they'd be providing. I chose meatloaf with mash, chicken stir fry with noodles and stuffed chicken. All came out each day at the lunch in a large box, with a salad a main and some desserts. The salad was a bit stam as were the desserts, so only ate some of them the first day. The mains, although not always so attractive were quiet nice and a good portion. The stirfry was a tad bit too sweet for my taste, but otherwise good stuff. I also stopped by the day before the conference officially started to pick up some nosh for breakfast and yo fill in during the week. It's like a small makolet but filled with lots of good stuff. Friendly helpful staff and i was in and out in anout 10 mins. Happy to see there's where to go when in rhe kosher desert (term i heard from some locals).

Google
Delicious food! Grocery items are overpriced compared to what you can pay in the LA area but great to be able to get kosher items in the area.

Google
Great selection. Prices are high but they have a monopoly. Food from the deli is good and the frozen meat is high quality. My kids swear the homemade chumus is the best around. They also carry a fair amount of Gluten Free products. Counter service can be a bit slow, but it is worth it for the delicious prepared food!

Yelp
Outstanding Pastrami sandwiches. My go to place on Lakeshore for a reasonably priced good sandwiches

Yelp
I think the only kosher place in Oakland and possibly San Francisco and surrounding areas. One stop shopping for all your kosher needs. They seem very accommodating. They sell cooked meat they sell uncooked meats. They sell salads. Try it you'll like it.

Mo A.

Yelp
Great and clean place. The rest of meat I bought was very good. Only one batch was old.

Yelp
Great pita falafel sandwiches with all sorts of pickles and fillings. I try to get there pretty often for lunch

Yelp
We had Oakland Kosher cater our family event for 150 people. WOW! Not only were they super easy to work with, but their food was absolutely incredible. We had compliments from our friends and family all month! If you aren't familiar with their food, you can get lunch at Abba's Hummus, which is a part of their shop. Same food! We will have leftovers in our freezer for months. This was by far the best option for our budget. They delivered on time, the platters were decorated beautifully. All around perfection. We ordered for 150 people: 1. Fruit platters 2. Hummus 3. Baba Ganoush 4. Falafel 5. Pita 6. Kebabs 7. Chicken Schwarma 8. Beets 9. Moroccan Carrots

Yelp
Very interesting market with salad bar and middle eastern sandwiches and bowls. Ordered a falafel sandwich to go and really enjoyed it. Was sad I didn't have a second sandwich. I liked how there are four different choices of sides plus the hummus and falafel and it's all layered top down with sesame sauce on top. This created a different experience as you ate down the sandwich. The service was also great but a little slower than anticipated.

Yelp
They do not honor the prices listed on Yelp menu. Many items are 50-100% more on the menu board in the store. Instead of acknowledging their mistake they charge customers the in-store price

Leah S.

Yelp
I came here for some Kosher chicken wings and dry salami. The salami was tasty and affordable. They even sliced the salami from the other side of the store for me. This review is primarily in regard to the raw chicken. I purchased 2 pounds of chicken wings that were cut, frozen, and wrapped in plastic wrap. Because of the way it was packaged I couldn't see what I was buying. When I went home to thaw it out it was not quality meat at all. It clearly hadn't been cleaned well and I don't think the chicken was the healthiest before being slaughtered. The weirdest issue was the residue/film that was stuck to the chicken. The chicken felt like it was covered in oil and it had a weird smell to it. My hands were covered in the residue after trying to clean it. I wash my chicken before cooking anyway but I had to aggressively wash this chicken with white vinegar and lemon to even be able to cook with it. In end it had a aftertaste. I won't be buying any raw meat from this location again.

Yelp
This kosher establishment is the only all-kosher grocery in the Bay Area and we are lucky to have it here! Not only is it a convenient source of kosher chicken and beef, but has an excellent assortment of kosher dairy and frozen products as well as baked goods and fresh-baked challah. The addition of ABBAs Hummus bar and deli in recent years expanded its offerings so that you can now have lunch at an outdoor dining area or take it out for a picnic. On Fridays they have a robust assortment freshly prepared meals. You can also special-order many of these by calling. My main complaint is the cost, although that's not that unusual for quality kosher food. It would also be nice if they'd open for dinner at least one night a week.

Sarah W.

Yelp
The store is totally closed yet on ensure it says the store is open. There is no open store Sunday or Monday. Maybe they are closed for Passover week?
google avatar

Jim D.

Yelp
Located at the convenience of Lakeshore, parking is hit or miss, this establishment has been providing kosher food for the bay area ever since, my go to for foods the brings comfort and memory, all the essentials such as ingredients to make cholent, gefilta, chopped liver, feet jelly and other delicacies. Some of the items are not cheap, but that's the price you have to pay.

Gloria S.

Yelp
Wonderful and important resource for kosher foods in the Bay Area . Don't forget to stop R the sandwich / felafel bar !

Yelp
This place has essentially no competition in and around Oakland and sometimes it shows. Rude and obnoxious are not considered positive attributes in retail staff. I went in to buy some Passover merchandise and it all came in glass jars. As I was paying I asked the clerk if I could put them in a box, which they had many of, he said "I have plastic bags". Large glass jars banging against each other in plastic bags didn't seem like a good idea but he argued with me anyway. Finally he agreed to let me use a box and as we were packing it, our hands bumped for maybe a 10th of a second. The guy acted like I ran over his dog. I apologized. We used the sanitizer on the counter. But he kept going on like I put my car into reverse and ran over his dog again. I've been in a lot of stores and this guy is definitely a candidate for the remedial retail employee, course. I could get this stuff from Amazon but I wanted to support a local business. On second thought, Jeff Bezos is local enough. (For what it's worth, the food on the Hummus restaurant side is pretty good. This review is for the retail operation in the original location.)

Yelp
Only fully Kosher deli in the Bay Area. I like getting their NY style fully Kosher sandwiches. High priced but cheaper than comparable sandwiches in NY itself. (they will offer lettuce on the sandwich, almost a sin in NY, but hey it's California RIGHT?!) I also pick up some home made hummus, some Hafla products and one of the few decent pita breads in the area. I get bags of Elite Turkish coffee and tins of Elite instant for home at a better price than Amazon. Other than sticker shock (which I get at every restaurant these days) I have had only good experiences going in there.

Ohad K.

Yelp
Amazing place for foods that take me back, and "exotic" food from the Middle East. The staff is friendly and courteous!

Yoná L.

Yelp
Oakland Kosher has always been #1 and will always stay that way- Great service, delicious and authentic middle eastern food and satisfying quantity. Always the best and only kosher store to visit when we're back in town, always greeted with a smile and good time. We had hummus, falafel, hamburger, pita and fries, reminds us of home every time. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Yelp
Almost everything I bought there is expired Smells bad And DANGEROUS TO EAT stay away The Oakland health department must visit there

Judith M.

Yelp
I have been going there for a long time. Last time I was there I was treated very badly. I asked the employee to locate something for me and he acted like I was stupid. I went to pay and to put in my password it only had numbers. I use a word. I mentioned it and the guy at the register grabbed my card and just touched the screen. Also rude. All the people there were very young. They know nothing about customer service. I haven't been back since. Who is the owner? Hire nicer people.

Yelp
Nice Jewish/Israeli supermarket. Good verity compered to other ones in the bay area. They have option for fresh food which was pretty good. The service was good. Nice environment. The only negative is it's very expensive.

D. R.

Yelp
Great prices and service. I'm glad we have them in the neighborhood. I love the white fish and nova( like being in NY)

Yelp
Never order the hotdog--it's a plain microwaved hotdog on a bun that's too big. The fries were soggy. The service was cold. The food was lacking effort. From the time i stepped inside this place, it was if the two workers there were trying to decide which one of them would take my order. The guy wouldn't take my order, so the girl reluctantly did. When finally got my order, I seen the sad little hotdog laying there naked and shriveled. I asked for some toppings and was initially told, "it's over there". I tried to ask for pickles, relish or onion, but the guy walked off and started yapping with his buddies. The girl seemed like she was asking his permission to get what i was asking for so I said forget it, and told them my dog would enjoy the $9 hotdog. I ended going across the street to Top Dog, where the hotdog is bigger than the bun and it's grilled.

Yelp
I love this place. It's got an amazing selection of Jewish & Israeli foods and beverages that I can't find anywhere else. Whenever I'm feeling nostalgic for my favorite foods from childhood and New York City, I head here and am instantly happier.

Yelp
My goto item here is the knishes. They are not cheap... $3.50 or $4.50 a piece, depending on whether you want meat in there. However, they are tasty and reheat well for a nice afternoon snack. The staff here is fairly helpful. And the other food items are hit or miss. Also the pricing is about 15% higher than the market in the Grand Lake area. However, there aren't many Kosher food stores around, so they do have a bit of a monopoly. Parking is challenging as this is right on the main strip in the Grand Lake area. Overall, I'll be back to get some more knishes.

Yelp
Great food, fresh and clean. Crew is great. There is a nice variety of food options, i do eat there a lot and what keeps me coming back is the different food options and a really good customer service. I usually really picky when it comes to food all the time but in Oakland kosher i feel like at home. Great ppl. Great food.

Yelp
Great selection of food that's very hard to come by. Sandwiches size met all the requirements for this East coaster

Yelp
Oakland Kosher has really evolved in recent years. Not only a great store, but now also a great lunch spot! Their hummus is as good as any I've had in Israel and definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
A classic with nearly everything you might need. The deli is better than ever. If you were worried that current staff might not be able to up the place. You can stop

Yelp
Fantastic new addition- the pita/bowl deli. Imagine Subway. With falafel, lamb, and chicken. Plus- you get a warm pita and 18 Mediterranean salads to choose from as sides. Friday they go all out with whole roasted chicken. My family ate everything. Affordable, local, and a great friendly staff. They'll guide you if you don't know what's what. I want this again tomorrow! Closed on Saturday. 6 stars. Can I give 6? Note- all the recent reviews are 5 star. They renovated and revamped and it's all delicious.

Yelp
The best pastrami I've had in a VERY long time. Great service. Great falafels. We were very happy.

Yelp
Great service and products very nice and polite people, I'm highly recommend to visit there

Yelp
This is a wonderful Kosher grocery and butcher, with a great Israeli deli attached next door. They have pretty much everything Kosher you need, and for Pesach it's also well organized and separated (including a section for kitniot!) There is also really nothing like this in the East Bay, and the vibe feels like Israel. If you're looking for kosher food, meat, wines and lunch this is your spot! And here's a pro tip: on Friday mornings they have a special prepared food selection including orange chicken, brisket, lamb rice, burekas and more. And this on top of their regular offerings of falafel, shawarma, hamburgers etc (all kosher of course!)

S. P.

Yelp
Great service! Be patient because everything is hand done. Fantastic burgers, some deli sandwiches , french fried, humos bowls especially w kebabs. The take away deli is great w lots of options. The groceries are spectacular if you keep kosher. And if you don't keep kosher but want prepared and instant middle eastern food, or vegan or cheeses made without animal rennet- this is the place. And if you shop at whole foods you will not have sticker shock. .
google avatar

Yelp
Didn't get a great vibe when I walked in. Lacked customer service. They did have the product I was looking for but at twice the price.
google avatar

Yelp
Tried the OKF Abbas hummus bar for the first time and I will be back. Delicious and fun to point at all the different sides (salads) you can put on top. Favorite salads included the eggplant, marinated carrots and the cabbage. Very friendly. Hit it when there are less people inside -- it can feel pretty squished and sensory overload in a good way with all the interesting grocery products and freshly prepared foods. I liked that they use paper for the humus bowl and I asked for foil instead of the plastic cover.
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
Things always seem a little frustratingly slow here but they have the best hummus I've ever eaten. I used to make hummus a lot, but theirs is so much better that I've basically stopped out of shame and an acknowledgement that my chickpea mush shall never reach the heights of theirs. The pita they make (in the big chest freezer) is also great. I live close by and buy both all the time.

Yelp
We love, love, love this place. The service is fantastic and the food is so00 delicious. I can't wait to come back and try this place again. They were the sweetest people and so kind. Definitely supporting this place again soon!!!
google avatar

Nadav M.

Yelp
Nice to see the only kosher options in the Bay Area pretty much. They have different types of meats and produce from Israel. Their wine selection is abundant and many refrigerated goods. I was proud to purchase my cholent ingredients here where I can't get them anywhere else. This is my primary place to buy challah and kosher meat. I appreciate you. Definitely coming back whenever I need something.
google avatar

Yelp
Wanted to try the chocolate babka so drove 20 min for it. Totally worth it. Heated it up for 30 seconds before enjoying the warm moist slice. Yum!

Yelp
Oakland very much needs a couple more places that caters to the Jewish community. Customer service here is terrible. Staff argue in front of customers. I just called to get a price on matza and the clerk told me I have to come in to find out. Most of the staff, with a couple of exceptions, act like they're doing you a favor by being there. Several times the homemade food has been stale or rancid. And it's expensive! I hope the owners read this. We deserve better!!
google avatar

Regina S.

Yelp
Was in the neighborhood trying to kill time since I couldn't find a parking spot in time for a yoga class at 4:30pm (I will take the 6:30pm class). Plus, I was hungry & wanted something as close to healthy as possible. And I found it! As I strolled down Lakeshore Blvd, I randomly found Oakland Kosher Foods. Their sign caught my eye & sold me on their $6.99 falafel & salad special. There was only 1 couple ahead of me in line. Staff member who took my order was nice, asked if I wanted fries for an extra $2. I politely declined & stated "I'm trying to be good" (AKA I really want some). The guy said it would take 5 min & he even asked if I wanted my salad inside the falafel pita or on the side. Although it was a chilly afternoon, I sat at 1 of their 2 tables outside to enjoy my meal & the fresh air. As passersby walked by, they would look at my yummy meal I was clearly enjoying & stop at the entrance to look inside. Will come back again!!

Yelp
New hummus bar and deli was fantastic. Both the wraps and bowls are very fresh, have great ingredients and are perfect for lunch or dinner. So happy this is now open!

Affinity J.

Yelp
5 stars*. We focused on what they make in house for lunch. We had felafel, sebiche, and schwarma. The felafel is among her best I have tasted. All of the side salads we tried were great. The roasted eggplant in the sebiche and the roasted eggplant salad were both amazing stand-out dishes. We too a pint of so of the roasted eggplant salad to go and it's great on pasta, bread. Anything. On the basis of lunch, we also got a container of the pulled brisket to take home. This was the the only disappointment. I don't know if we got a bad batch or the bottom of the barrel but It was too tough, acidic, and burnt tasting to eat. And the middle sized container was a costly mistake to have to throw out. If you steer clear of the pulled brisket, anything they make in-house should be great.

Yelp
Was going through pastrami withdrawals so I decided to go to Grubhub and see what I could find. I found and decided to give Oakland Kosher Foods a go. This restaurant deserves 5 stars for quickness of delivery. The pastrami was very flavorful but it was too stringy (way too many tendons). I found myself choking and pulling tendons from down my throat for each bite. At first I thought maybe it was just one but i had to go through the meat and pull out the 15 tendons in just half of the sandwich. This is not a sandwich you can eat without going through first. Unless you want to choke to death. I'll have to eat the second half at home when I have more time to go through the meat and remove all the tendons.

Yelp
Yuval and Gal bring kosher goods to the east bay and help many Jews keep kosher Gal is a great guy smart strong and he forced me to write that
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place. It feels like an upscale "makolet" in Israel. Great wines, olive oils, meats, homemade humus, cooked dishes for Shabbat, and more. The owner is knowledgeable and friendly. I mentioned a certain chocolate that I've been missing since Pesach and the next week, the store was loaded with them. If this store takes care of my chocolate, it's my kinda' place!
google avatar

Andrew C.

Yelp
Small Kosher grocery with butcher counter & deli. Their signage is not good showing only price per lb for deli meats (I looked so maybe I missed the sandwich board?) so I just asked if I could get a hot pastrami sandwich on rye. Was answered in the affirmative ($9.99 for the pastrami sando) and was asked if I wanted cole slaw or potato salad. The sandwich comes with a *large* double scoop of potato salad along with 2 pickle spears and a few olives (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/opek19IuDjUH1eSt2pnT-w?select=AhGaCWCO7TNDCV6g4HlqWw). Definitely not over-stuffed. There's a decent amount of meat in the middle which went to almost nothing at the edges (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/opek19IuDjUH1eSt2pnT-w?select=9k9eOALGOtVtrVkWMp-chg). I have to say that the pastrami is delicious. It has a distinct smokiness that I seldom find. The potato salad is a mix of yellow and red skinned potatoes in large (~2") chunks. It was pretty bland and somewhat dry. I didn't finish more than a few bites. Did you know they make Kosher sriracha? http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/opek19IuDjUH1eSt2pnT-w?select=etkHowR27BrfyzVrwgYIYQ Pastrami Sandwich: 4+ stars Potato Salad: 2 stars

Yelp
One of the only, if not the only actual Kosher delis in the Bay Area. Very diverse selection and good service.
