Fruitvale Merchants Demand Action from Oakland City Officials Over Neighborhood Violence | Eater SF

"Leticia Chavez, owner of Obelisco Restaurant in Fruitvale, says she’s seen fewer customers in recent weeks and attributes the drop to heightened public safety concerns; she warns that "the plaza used to be the heart of Fruitvale" and that "if we don’t get support, we’ll close our businesses." - Paolo Bicchieri

Where to Eat and Drink in Oakland’s Fruitvale Neighborhood | Eater SF

"This low-key restaurant sometimes gets lost in the shuffle amid the number of new, high-profile spots that have opened in the immediate vicinity of the Fruitvale BART station, but Obelisco (formerly Taco Grill) was using Mary’s chicken and Niman Ranch pork and beef before it was trendy and commonplace for local Mexican spots to do so. It’s probably best known for its pozole (available in red, green, and white versions), and it’s also one of the few places in town that serves crispy tacos — get the one with potatoes for some excellent carb-on-carb action." - Luke Tsai

We love this cute little authentic Mexican restaurant. Obelisco is a cozy-feeling family-run place, with friendly attentive staff, (Thank you Zack!), bright new-looking decor, indoor seating for around 50, and outdoor seating for around 10. We were seated quickly in the evening (Oct 2025). We started with rich fresh quacamole enlivened with onion, cilantro, and lime, and a nice bite of serrano. The freshly made chips are thin and crispy, with nicely lightly spicy red pico sauce and green salsa. We loved our strong balanced bite-y mango margaritas, a smooth rich non-alcoholic lightly cinnamon horchata made with house-made rice milk, and a wonderful refreshing house-crafted lime&tequila horchata! We had terrific perfectly-tender juicy halibut tacos, a sweet lightly flavored fish, served with black beans and rice and thin sliced radish circles. We had rich robust intricately-seasoned pollo mole, with dense flavoring and tender a juicy chicken-quarter. The chicken chile verde was a treat i hadn’t tasted before, chunks of tender chicken with some lasting heat from the tangy green tomatillo sauce. These two were presented rather simply, sneaking up on us with their bold authentic flavors. We happily stayed to enjoy their house-made silky creamy flan under caramel sauce for the lingering sweetness that matches our experiences here. Experience”s”? Yep. We visited three times during a seven-day trip here! Obelisco made us feel like welcome family. They are open during dinner hours, and promise lunch service soon. We got one of several parking spots out front, and there’s street parking to the east and north, with some competition from nearby places. This is great place for a casual meal or for an occasion.

We went for my Friend's Birthday. The food was really good. There drinks are good as well. So the only issue was the service was kind of slow. I think they would need one more server on busy days. 2 of our group didn't get there food until after 20 min later after the other 4 were already served. Update: So we went back with a Bigger group and everything was great. Service was really good especially for a group of 8 on a Friday. Got the Ceviche and Carnitas. Both were really good. This is a great spot will be back.

Adriana was the best. Actually all the servers were we just learned her name. As a long time lover of all Mexican food, I’m unfortunately watching calories (sad) but we needed to celebrate. The food was outstanding. I had crispy tacos. Yummy! My wife had quesadilla and I stole a bite. Yummy too. Drinks were uniquely great. A new favorite for sure!

It was such an honor to be invited to the friends and family opening night at Obelisco, and I’m incredibly grateful to have been part of such a special evening. The hospitality was heartfelt, the space was beautiful, and the food—absolutely phenomenal. The carnitas were tender, flavorful, and perfectly crisped on the edges—everything you want in a classic dish done right. The chicken mole was rich, deep, and beautifully balanced, with that complex, velvety sauce that stays with you long after the last bite. The salsas were bright and bold, each with their own personality, and the refried beans were smooth, savory, and satisfying—comfort food at its best. And don’t even get me started on the guacamole—fresh, creamy, and perfectly seasoned. Obelisco is clearly a labor of love, and it shines through in every detail—from the food to the warm, welcoming energy of the team. Can’t wait to come back and support this beautiful new addition to the community!

Hands down the best wet mole burrito I've ever had. The mole sauce was perfectly balanced - rich, complex, with just the right amount of sweetness and depth. You can tell they're not cutting corners on ingredients or technique. The cocktail was beyond amazing - clearly made with care and quality liquor. And the horchata hit that perfect balance of creamy and refreshing. This is the kind of place where you can taste the difference that careful sourcing makes. Fresh tortillas, quality meats and vegetables, and execution that shows real respect for the food. If you're in Oakland and haven't been to Obelisco yet, fix that. The wet mole burrito alone is worth the trip. Highly recommend.

If I could give it 10 stars I would. The mole was slammin. The salsa was spot on. It was clear everything was made from scratch and delicious. So glad to have this in the neighborhood.

To call this opening anything less than grand would be an understatement. I arrived about an hour before closing and the place was packed. I was received warmly by the host and seated and served shortly thereafter. The carne asada was tender and juicy, the salsas are to die for. The Pachamama Sour was delicious and came with the most adorable little marigold in it. What’s more was the added perk of meeting the artist of the painting in the main dining area. Can’t wait to come back!

I’m soooo excited that Obelisco relocated to Lakeshore! The food is amazing, as always, and now with a full bar and the most perfect margaritas. It’s a family operation and so clear that they put their whole hearts into it. The staff are super friendly. I’ve had the ceviche, the shrimp tacos, the enchiladas verdes, and the chips and guac and it was all incredible. Tell all your friends!
