Where to Eat and Drink in Oakland’s Fruitvale Neighborhood | Eater SF

"This low-key restaurant sometimes gets lost in the shuffle amid the number of new, high-profile spots that have opened in the immediate vicinity of the Fruitvale BART station, but Obelisco (formerly Taco Grill) was using Mary’s chicken and Niman Ranch pork and beef before it was trendy and commonplace for local Mexican spots to do so. It’s probably best known for its pozole (available in red, green, and white versions), and it’s also one of the few places in town that serves crispy tacos — get the one with potatoes for some excellent carb-on-carb action." - Luke Tsai

I’m excited for the next chapter of Obelisco on Lakeshore! Solid Mexican cuisine in new surroundings. I loved it when they were in the Fruitvale.

Google
Had albondigas soup which I hadn't had in ages. They tasted as I remember!! Deliscious.Delicious. my friend had the chile relleno. Good too. The inside of the place is OK. Nothing fancy. They serve beer. Good service.

Google
The food and service was really good. They give you chips and salsa, both green and red they were both good spicy but not too much. I had the flautas ($12) delicious, they weren't your everyday simple flautas. They covered them with sour cream, pico, guac, lettuce, and a little salsa whcih you don't get everywhere. And my husband had the carne asada which even came with a salad, rice, beans, little green onions, and a roasted jalapeño. Oo and some guacamole. Added plus it's really close to the BART station.

I came for a casual lunch, and not too often do I have such a nice experience at a restaurant. The salsa had very fresh flavor, the grilled chicken sope had a wonderful sauce, and as a final treat the dairy-free gluten-free Coconut Flan was delicious. As a person with food sensitivities i really appreciated that they featured this item. Prices are good. The servers are friendly and attentive. Obelisco sets a model for eateries regarding quality food and service.

Google
The food is tasty, the service is good, and the location is convenient. It is located in the Fruitvale Plaza just outside of the Fruitvale BART station. We have group gatherings here.

Google
Incredible. This place serves habernero salsa with its chips. Three salsa types come to your table to start you off. The shrimp and fish tacos are out of bounds. So good I forgot to take a picture. Get off the Fruitvale Bart stop and make your way here.

Google
It's sad that the atmosphere is so important. This is a no frills sort of place. The bathrooms are super clean ( with really pretty tile) the kitchen is spotless, and the food is spot on. I had the mole plate, my husband had a burrito, and we shared the fried fish taco. All were delicious. The mole especially was very good. Full of flavor and not sweet! Go for the food and nice people!

Google
We had a great experience working with Leticia. We needed catering for an office function in downtown Oakland and she came up with an incredible menu for us that worked with our budget. The food was delicious (every bit was eaten, and people raved about it), the setup and break down went perfectly, and we will definitely be using Obelisco in the future.

Yelp
4.8/5 Consistent service and quality authentic food! Good fish tacoes you can rely on and good portions for the size. I used to come here when I was vegetarian, and the veg tacoes are great as well. They have a coconut flan that's dairy free - there's something here for everyone. Beautiful atmosphere and location. Sad the chips and salsa aren't complimentary anymore, but not a big deal since the prices are reasonable. Great spot, I highly suggest!

Yelp
Now let's talk about this salad. I had the Tostada salad with chicken. Served on a fried corn tortilla shell without black bean, spring mix, romaine lettuce, red cabbage, without radish, carrots, queso fresco, pico de gallo, homemade balsamic vinaigrette on the side. I just realized my salad was not topped w/ guacamole but it was still good. Service was amazing, everything is freshly cooked and the ambiance was nice. It gets busy during lunch so I can imagine it gets busy during dinner as well.

Yelp
The best tasty salad in a minute! It's not just typical lettuce, it's a blend! Loved every bite! There is not only shrimp as a protein, but black beans as well!!! They do have Agua Fresca!!! Yum! Is very sweet, so just ask for extra ice if you don't want this super sweet treat with your meal! They also serve beer. The place is a bit dark with many colors involved! No bright colors, but there is outside seating available! This is 1/2 counter service, so order before you're seated! And they bring the food and drinks to you! The restrooms are clean and bright. There is only street parking or Bart parking.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in Oakland. I was very sorry to see the notice they closed in the Oakandside. And delighted to see that they plan to reopen in May. I look forward to seeing their new location.

Yelp
I ate here once many many years ago. I remember when they first opened. It was really good back in the day but now honestly i didn't like my burrito. I should have just got fish tacos. The burrito is big and fulfilling but i barely had any meat even though i ordered steak and shrimp. The burrito was sloppy and falling apart. I don't think I'd ever order a burrito from here again. Also the meat i did try the steak was really chewy.

Yelp
I was craving chilaquiles verdes, these hit the spot YUM! My first time here, reasonable prices, I'll be back.

Yelp
I was in the fruitvale district yesterday for work and usually this district is known for some pretty good Mexican food. That was not the case yesterday for my experience. I am also Latin so I know what the dishes I ordered should taste like. I ordered: Posole - very flavorful and would order again because it was similar to other posole I have had. Caldo de Res - extremely bland unfortunately. Broth had no flavor whatsoever. I had to put a lot of salsa in the soup to give it flavor. The vegetables were hard and not cooked all the way through.. Hard pass for me. Coconut flan - star of the show in my opinion. The service was excellent. The flan was excellent. Unfortunately the authentic Mexican food was a miss for me. Truthfully the beef didn't taste right to me. It almost had a perfume kind of taste to it. I didnt eat the rest of it. For an over $50 order I expected more.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite Mexican restaurants and we're so happy they're opening again for dinner. We recently came for an early dinner and were able to park right in front. I love to get their chile relleno burrito, so delicious like your typical chile relleno but wrapped in a flour tortilla with beans, rice, salsa, and of course I added guacamole. Very filling! My wife loves getting their fish tacos and what really makes the dish, whether you get the fish grilled or fried, is the fresh made corn tortillas. With so many Mexican restaurants in the Bay Area, it's still not easy to find places with tortillas made fresh. Great agua frescas that aren't over-sweetened (try the guava, it's incredible!). Chips come with a good salsa approaching medium spicy. We tried the coconut flan this time and it was so good with the syrup and had a more firm texture than many other flans I've had. Since we ate too much our server prepared the flan to-go and it transported easily.

Yelp
Can't believe I haven't written a review for them yet since we love love love everything they make for lunch and dinner and order at least a couple times a month now for years. The enchiladas de mole, verdes, sopa de albóndigas, pozole blanco, tacos de papa, carnitas plate, shrimp salad, and vegan enchilada plate are our go-tos. We also always get a big order of red salsa and chips and whatever fresh juice drinks they make. Family owned and run. Really stands out with thier high quality ingredients, home made tortillas, and lots of vegan options with real substance (not just onions and bell peppers). Our whole family loves them and hope you do too!

Jay A.

Yelp
Everything is so delicious. Authentic food, friendly staff, nice indoor dining. I would highly recommend them if you're looking for good Mexican food. The albondigas is delicious, and the burritos and pozole are awesome also.

Chris H.

Yelp
I absolutely love this restaurant. The fried fish burritos are my FAVE. I would go here every day if I could!

Yelp
SO GREAT, very hearty tacos, 2 for $7 , Filled with meats and great taco masa... We got the Asado, the carnita and adobados (chicken repollo) and they were all delicious, and filled beyond capacity with the protein, and very fresh vegetables. you can call and order ahead so they are ready when you pick up. The staff are great and they are at Fruitvale BART station.

Yelp
A fantastic Mexican eatery! For years I worked upstairs from Obelisco and would come for lunch at least once a week. They are a casual counter service taqueria, ringing you up for food, giving you a basket of chips with their delicious homemade salsa and giving you a number to bring you your food at your chosen table. However, what sets Obelisco apart from many of the other taquerias in the area is their fresh ingredients and healthier food options. You can't really go wrong here, their tacos and burritos are very good, and have great veggies options! However my favorite go-to dish is their "tostada salad" which is a beautiful bed of mixed greens with beans, pico de gallo, and choice of protein, my favorite being their Mary's Chicken, on top of crispy tortillas which I honestly often leave on the plate. I'm usually more of a carne asada girl but their chicken is juicy, seasoned deliciously and grilled to perfection. The salad is so big I often have leftovers! When I want to change it up I sometimes get their enchiladas with green salsa which also tastes fresh and delicious!

Yelp
Hadn't been here in years and I'm SO glad we ordered in last night after so long. Wasn't disappointed! I just love everything about this restaurant - so fresh, everything is definitely made in-house, and you can taste the care in their dishes. We ordered: 1. Carne Asada plate: so satisfying and just the way I like it: meat cut well and was cooked to perfection. The grilled jalapeño and onion on the side is always my favorite. 2. Fajita plate: just fine. Battle of the Pozole: 3. Green pozole with chicken 4. Red pozole with pork the red pozole won the battle!

Yelp
Delicious food, nice people, and a comfortable, clean space. We decided to get food from Obelisco because they were featured on KTVU one morning. They showed that a lot of the items they offer from the corn tortillas to the mole sauce are made in house, and that was reason enough for us! We ordered the chicken pozole rojo, chicken mole enchiladas, and the carnitas tacos and ALL of it was on point. The pozole was flavorful especially with all of the garnishes - shredded cabbage, onions, an herb that was similar to oregano, and lime (*chef's kiss*), and the chicken was nice and tender..SO COMFORTING! The mole enchiladas were SO GOOD..the sauce was delicious with just the right amount of Mexican chocolate flavor. And the tacos..house made corn tortillas with carnitas that were cooked perfectly - it was a combo of tender meat, with crispy bits, and the juiciness of the pork (my mouth is watering as I type!). I had a cerveza with the tacos and it was heavenly haha! Please give this place a try! The food will not disappoint, and that shows the folks that run the place are passionate about what they do, and care about their customers. We're eager to go back and try their other offerings. KEEP THE AWESOME FOOD COMING AND THE GREAT SERVICE GOING, OBELISCO!

Yelp
I ordered the verde chicken pozole. I would give it about a 3.5 stars. I ordered to go and what I can say is that it was loaded with chicken and broth which I liked. What could have been better is the flavor. It did not have much flavor at all. I have tasted others chicken verde pozole and it was packed with flavor. This one was quite bland, almost like homemade chicken soup without the noodles and bouillon. Also, the hominy was not cooked all the way. It still had its hard kernel in the center. It is supposed to be soft which it lacked. I probably wouldn't order it again. I would definitely check out other items on the menu though.

Aleanna S.

Yelp
I just paid $20 for one skinny skimpy steak & shrimp burrito. Not worth it! $12 base price, but extras are $1 extra and I only added sour cream and cheese. That's $2 worth of additional toppings. Shrimp to steak ratio was unbalanced. Felt like there were about 3 pieces of shrimp in the entire thing and they were small. I might as well had just ordered it all steak! I mean the flavor was coo' but it was NOT worth my $20 at all. The bag of chips they give you were super small and skimpy too, not the best tortilla chips but thank you anyway. I love their fish tacos and I should've just stuck to what I know on this trip. Better luck next time.

Yelp
Quality is a cut above taquerias in the area with comparable prices. Everything always tastes fresh and it's apparent they care about the sourcing of their ingredients. Super convenient location in the village near the Bart station.

Yelp
Love the food! Service is always great and friendly. Their hours are a bit inconvenient, but I get it. It's not a great area. Parking is a pain
google avatar

Yelp
Not only great food! We came in 1/2 hour before they close, they took our order and the owner was so nice to us. Both their mole made with nuts and the green verde sauce were amazing on enchilada plates. The selection of rice was refreshing, love love loved my meal! Dining area was spacious and clean, we were the only diners due to time and they didn't rush us to finish. Chicken Mole & Nopales yummy really good food!

Yelp
I came here because I was in the area and hungry. So, I checked with Yelp and found Obelisco, and followed the advice of the ones who came before me. I had a fried fish taco (usually I would have grilled fish) and yum!!! Fresh oil and fresh fish made a big difference. If you order other foods at the same time, I highly recommend eating the fried fish while it is hot. I think quality changes if it gets cold. Then I had the Coconut Flan. As soon as my lips and tongue first slurped the flan I made a deep sigh...it was so tasty. My mouth wanted more than the nice sized serving...it tasted so yummy, but my tummy was so full. It was more than an adequate portion. If I am in the neighborhood and hungry, I will come here again.

Yelp
Obelisco is located steps away from the Fruitvale BART station entrance in the Fruitvale Village plaza. After hearing good reviews from friends about their food, I decided to stop by and order a chicken burrito. Ordering was quick, easy and, friendly. My order was ready within a few minutes. The chicken burrito had large pieces of white meat with black beans, sour cream, cheese, lettuce and pico de gallo. They don't have rice in their burritos. It was a good sized tasty burrito. A good choice for Mexican food after getting off BART or getting a bite before hopping on the train.

Yelp
I've been home sick with a cold and ordered by door dash their albondigas and pozoli soup. Absolutely delicious!!! Very flavorful and wow, so generous with the yummy meatballs in the albondigas and the chicken in the pozoli. Crazy good! I've ordered other food from here too, all quality goodness. I definitely recommend this place, Like homemade food and reasonable prices.

Yelp
The best food you can ever find in Oakland ! Been a fan since 09 when it was Taco Grill and now flourished into Obelisco ! If you haven't tried it you've been missing out! It's a MUST if you're out in the Bay Area ! The staff is always so sweet and welcoming too , trust me you'll love it here!!
google avatar

Roxi T.

Yelp
The parking is horrible but the restaurant is nice and that it provides outdoor seating. Their Green Chicken Pozole is delicious!! I appreciate how they provide all the fixings to go with it, especially the corn tortillas. If parking wasn't such an issue with me, I'd give it a 4 star.
google avatar

Yelp
Pandemic. Tuesday 10am, who has pozole!?! I called and I called and finally got a hit with Obelisco. Hadn't been, but I'm so happy I got my pozole fix here. Green pozole was so good, will get pork instead of chicken next time. Pork Red pozole tasted like home. Will definitely be here again when I need my pozole fix. Also, don't forget to ask for the chile crumbs. Glad I asked because it wasn't in the bag. Also, I needed more Oregano ;P
google avatar

Leonor A.

Yelp
Was in the area so decided to give this place a try. It's a very casual place (it gave me college town vibes) and is super affordable. They also have nice outdoor seating which allows some people watching. I got an horchata and a shrimp burrito ($16 total). Both were good, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again.

Yelp
I have had a few vegetarian burritos in Fruitvale yet Obelisco Restaurant might be my favorite. Their beans contain no lard & you can choose between black, pinto beans, or refried. Kudos for having the option to have a whole wheat tortilla or you can opt for brown rice cooked w/ garlic, cilantro, & corn. Once seated I was brought a basket of house-made corn chips along w/ a tasty red salsa that wasn't too spicy yet was flavorful. I went w/ the vegetarian burrito that came w/ picadillo de vegetales, black beans, brown rice, & Pico de Gallo. I was happy that it didn't come w/ cheese or sour cream. I had them add guacamole. I have a hearty appetite yet barely was able to finish it. The burrito was nourishing. It was packed w/ veggies & flavorful. Remember what your mother said....eat your veggies! The smiling service made me feel welcome. The vegan desert of Coconut Flan looked tempting yet didn't have room for it. Obelisco is a short walk from the Fruitvale BART station making it convenient for those visiting or living in East Oakland. I will be back soon!

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants, I don't get here enough. Staff is always friendly and the food is always fresh!! They also have tasty chips which can make a big difference. Yesterday I ordered the Mary's Chicken plate. It was delicious and well proportioned. I loved everything, and the corn tortillas really stood out. The chicken was juicy and spiced well, and the guacamole was perfect!
google avatar

Yelp
A pretty good choice if you are in the neighborhood. Located in Fruitvale Station among a number of other shops. I wish a safer neighborhood for them. Plenty of security roaming around so no real problem but other than a sunny weekend day I am not sure I would end up here. Place was empty when we walked in but others came after us. Definitely basic authentic food. Order from the counter and they bring to you. Chips / salsa tasty chips fresh and crispy. Chicken mole plate with whole beans and rice was a hit. Mole had nice balance of sweet and spicy. Beans and rice not remarkable but very decent. Chili verde chicken was ok but verde sauce was not memorable. Homemade tortillas came with both plates and were delicious soft warm and flavorful. Note bones in chicken not a problem just an awareness point. No issues with service but clearly short staffed as others experienced significant delay in getting service. Wishing this business well and hope others give them a try.

Yelp
We went here on the first day of our vacation. Woops. Our food tasted like cleaning solution. Took a few bites before we could pinpoint what was wrong. We spent the next several hours vomiting and considering a trip to the emergency room. Stomach's weren't right for the rest of the trip. Hard pass.

Yelp
I have lived in Oakland my entire life and I have to say the Mexican food scene has change and semi fallen off over the years. I am always on the hunt for the best Mexican restaurant and Obelisco is the best I've had in Oakland. I have ordered most of the items on the menu and have yet to be disappointed.

Yelp
Buenas Tardes! A great lunch today at Obelisco. First finding the place was a little tricky never having been in the area, but it's very easy once you know where it is! See photo marked with location. Upon entering the counter staff were very nice. They told us all about the cooking, and that all the beans, and tortillas were made there, along with all the dishes. No store bought tortillas or side dishes at this place! After coming back from Mazatlan my expectations were very high. I decided to order the enchilada plate which came with a cheese and chicken enchilada, along with refritos and rice. I opted for the green sauce but you could order red sauce if you prefer. The enchiladas were perfect. Corn tortillas are the only type of tortillas here so if you ask for flour you are out of luck. The enchiladas were perfect size. Two of them is a perfect lunch where you leave filling satisfied but not stuffed. The portions of the rice and beans were large but I never eat the rice (carb overload). The enchiladas were approximately 5 inches long and 1 inch wide and about 1/2 inch thick (how's that for a description!). The cheese enchilada had a nice portion of melted cheese inside and the chicken enchilada was packed with copious amounts of shredded chicken which was very moist and flavorful. The sauce was great. I also ordered a carne asada taco and it too was fantastic. A generous portion of meat, salsa, onion, a little lettuce, it was gone in a flash. Prices are very reasonable. I never come to this part of Oakland but now if I am in the mood for some good Mexican food, I won't hesitate to come back. Service was great, very friendly, spent time explaining the menu and made some recommendations. Restaurant was very clean, and the noise level was nice and calm so you didn't have to yell across the table. Located in the Fruitvale Shopping Plaza, this is a definite gem. My only disappointment was that I didn't get the Coconut Flan that was the special today. I should of but couldn't after eating two enchiladas and a taco... Estómago demasiado lleno!! 5 stars. Song of the review: "It's Raining Tacos", check it out on YouTube, you'll love it!

Yelp
Caldo de res was delicious as well as the torta de carne. Good and friendly service. The prices were good as well

Jessica M.

Yelp
Good gluten free Mexican food. We ordered take-out, so I can't comment on the service much. They have gluten free chicken mole which was super yummy.
google avatar

Angel T.

Yelp
My friend and I came here last week. I wanted to come here so bad because I haven't been to the restaurant ever since the pandemic started. I've been to this restaurant a couple of times, and every time I come I never get disappointed. I got red chilaquiles with rice and black beans. It was delicious and got me pretty full! I also got horchata and it was flavorful, it tasted really great! The many times I've been here I got veggie nachos and flautas and the food is never tasteless it's always delicious. If you want to try great Mexican food I recommend going to this place! You will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Gerben D.

Yelp
Hands down best burritos in Oakland. I love the pastor but can attest the chicken is delicious too. Their homemade tortillas taste fresh and bring them a notch above the competition. I generally pick the whole wheat option. Visit Obelisco if you crave a burrito.
google avatar

Gretchen T.

Yelp
I got the two taco plate with two carne asada tacos, rice, and beans. The amount of food isn't as much as I've had in other restaurants the price is a bit up there as well. There was a thin layer of rice and beans, not a big scoop of either. Everything could have used a bit more flavor.
google avatar

Song K.

Yelp
Oh so good. I had a real craving for chips and salsa and so glad about it because it led us here. We went around 7:30/8ish when the BART traffic had died down so it was really quiet. All the important things - food, portion size (look at the size of that burrito. It's as big as my forearm!), wait time (none), service, cleanliness - A+++. Their decor is also adorable!

Matthew A.

Yelp
Great Mexican place in the Fruitvale Plaza. I've ate here a couple times now and the burritos always hit. You can taste every ingredient in the burrito; something that is important for me when I order one. I look forward to coming back!

Yelp
Decent Mexican food at a very reasonable price, located next to the Fruitvale BART station. As a general and nearly unfailing rule, I like to measure my first judgement of a Mexican restaurant based on the quality of their salsa. If the salsa is really good, the food will likely be fantastic. If the salsa tastes like ketchup and jalapeños, the food won't be very good at all. (See: North Carolina - my college home - where Mexican food is terrible and all salsa tastes like ketchup with a few spicy mix-ins. I learned never to take close proximity to Mexico for granted.) This place has FANTASTIC salsa. No matter what your order, your food will be flavorful and you can probably dump some of their salsa on top and it's going to be even better. The menu has a great selection of food choices and many meats choices, which are all organic or free range chicken. I also like that they have three bean options: Black, pinto, and refried without lard. There is nice indoor and outdoor seating available. I love eating outside on a nice day. The interior is very clean, and service is great. You order at the counter and they will bring you your food. I almost always get the same tostada salad with chicken, and it is HUGE for only $10. I can eat half and take the rest home. It's super fresh and flavorful, and doesn't need the balsamic dressing. Just more of that delicious salsa. Horchata is great, or you can order some beer on tap. I hear the coconut flan is to die for, but I just haven't tried it yet. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

Yelp
Ordered 2 soups on Doordash. The merchant 'confirmed' the order and then 15-20 min later, a driver was assigned to pick up my order, per normal steps. I waited for the dasher to arrive (10-15min later) and then, when I was expecting my order to be arriving, I login to my phone to see that I was given a refund because my order was cancelled by the restaurant. Frustrating because they didn't call to let me know, or even attempt to give me alternatives if they didn't have what I wanted. Additionally frustrated that they 'confirmed' my order and didn't cancel right when they got the order, they cancelled after waiting 30-40 minutes.

Yelp
Covid hours: 8 am - 4 pm Mon thru Fri This place is amazing. It accommodates vegans, vegetarians, and gluten free friends. It also has really high quality meats.
google avatar

Michael N.

Yelp
The food here is pretty good. The quality felt higher then most burrito joints in the area. The burritos are on point here.
google avatar

Lara S.

Yelp
Fresh flavors, authentic and friendly staff. I appreciate how they have healthier alternatives such as free range chicken or adding fresh veggies to an enchilada. The area has numerous Mexican food options and trucks but this place has a variety of options on the menu and is one of the best. Always love a nice staff that's smiling and has great customer service.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice menudo but no Diablo. Tucked away in my fave corner of Fruitvale (across the street from Half Orange), this place looks like a fast food joint but is actually a family-run restuarant. Fast and friendly service. This place had menudo in the pictures and good reviews so I decided to give them a try. So far, it's the menudo to beat in Oakland. Unlike Diablo's nice large block pieces of tripe, this chef dices them which makes the dish less toothsome. The broth was spicy and I received a small portion of chili, onion and lime on the side. Combined I got a nice heat. The soup grows on you although the meat seems a little under-seasoned. They have a big space and nice outdoor patio. I'm looking forward to tring other items on the menu

Yelp
Their shrimp taco and rice water are good. I loved their food. Will be coming back here to try more dishes.

Yelp
Worth the drive from Dublin! Absolutely the best. Now that I live in Palm Beach FL I order from this restaurant every time I'm in CA. Last visit was the end of September & I'll be back in December. Can't wait!

Yelp
Love their Albondigas and Pasole! Mole Enchiladas were alright. I enjoy Agave's Mole Enchiladas more.
