Oberraindlhof

"The family that run this restaurant occupying an old farmhouse with origins dating back to the 16C has a relationship with the region that goes back decades. In later years, the farm became an inn and it has now been run by the same family for five generations, all motivated by a desire to introduce their guests to the best recipes and ingredients from the Senales valley. Dishes include an excellent roast lamb (raised on the restaurant’s own farm), which is stewed with bones and potatoes and served at the table from a copper cauldron. An excellent wine list and the hotel’s warm and friendly ambience add to the appeal." - Michelin Inspector

We came here for a short "pit stop" on our hiking tour. Great idea!! Cozy alpine cottage with rooms & restaurant. Delicious food, our dog was also welcome. But beware of the swallows, they live under the roof of the cottage and as we were there, they flew straight to the table. Adventurous lunch :)👍

The most amazing find. The owner and all staff are amazing, friendly, helpful and just so thoughtful. The rooms are adorable, clean, decorated with so much love for details, that transform the atmosphere back 100 years. The food is delicious and plentiful. Also, a 10 minute bus ride will bring you to the glacier to ski. Hiking can be done anywhere around here and the views are breathtaking. We loved every minute of our stay. Thank you very very much, everyone!

We stayed at the Oberraindlhof for 3 days at the end of our walking trip to the Dolomites. It is a very old building set on its own up the quiet Senales valley. The owners speak a little English but all the other guests were German and we were certainly entertainment value being English. The Tyrollean music evening on our first night broke the ice, then everyone wanted to practise their English. ||The rooms are quirky in the old building-it's very creaky and cosy but there are modern rooms in the annex which do not have the character but are quieter and have bigger bathrooms. We were in the old building for the first night but the second day they asked if we would like another room as my husband is rather tall and they thought the bathroom was too small for him. How thoughtful.||It is best to do half board here as it is not in a village and there are no other restaurants nearby. Breakfast is very good but dinners varied. The menu had just two choices of mains-That's fine if it is quality but one evening was fried chicken and chips. I would call that pub grub. The other 2 evenings were much better.||The staff were all helpful and happy even though language was a bit of a problem. Each morning there was a card on the breakfast table with the weather forecast and other information and the menu for that evening. A lovely touch was the English translation they did for us.||Certainly worth a detour up the Senales valley from Merano.

We spent 11 nights at Hotel Oberraindlhof in August 2018 and, for us, it was the perfect hotel. Independently owned, family-run, beautiful, clean and where customer service is at the core of everything this lovely hotel offers. The staff really are a huge asset to this hotel. They were unfailingly helpful, welcoming and charming.||||Hotel Oberraindlhof has been owned by the same family for hundreds of years and their pride in this shows in every small detail and the care that goes into maintaining the rooms, public areas and gardens.||||We had a very spacious family room with super shower room in the new annex building. The views were spectacular from our little balcony, the beds really comfortable, the hot water unending and there was plenty of storage for all our kit. Our room was cleaned daily and linen changed at least once during our stay.||||The food on offer was plentiful and delicious with a changing daily menu or a choice of some set dishes for children and the less adventurous. Breakfast was a banquet, tea ditto and dinner with all it's 5 courses (you don't have to have them all) was delicious. We could not fault it. I would recommend, as others have, opting for half-board as there are no other restaurants close by.||||The staff all spoke English so we could get by and it was refreshing to be surrounded by only German, Swiss and Italian guests. Everyone seemed happy to muddle through in a combination of languages.||||We had the misfortune of having a medical issue develop during our stay and the staff could not have been more helpful or supportive. So, even in an emergency, the hotel came up trumps.||||The hotel also has a large 'Wellness/Spa' area with saunas, steam rooms, loungers, complimentary drinks etc. So, whether you're coming back from a hard day's walking or skiing there is the perfect place to wind down.||||Once a week the hotel offers a day's guided walk with lunch stop at the half way point. It is a great way to explore the valley with a guide who knows it well. Our five year old daughter managed the morning walk of five miles and then we jumped on the valley bus back to the hotel (free with the Summer Card the hotel gives you) whilst the other guests pushed on through the afternoon and walked the full 10 miles back to the hotel.||||We loved the location of the hotel - half way up the Senales valley, within strolling distance of the bus stop and with direct access to a huge number of walking trails and neighbouring villages, all of which are worth exploring. Merano, with it's mix of shops, boutiques, restaurants, cafes and amazing swimming pool, is a mere 15 minutes drive away. The hotel provides free daily entry to the swimming pool, which our 5 year old daughter adored.||||There is an Archeo Park in the next village, a climbing/rope park about 15 minutes drive, gondola lifts to take you to the top of mountains, monasteries to explore and utterly breathtaking scenery. The valley is quiet and dark with only the stars and sound of rushing water to fill the nightscape. Bliss!||||If you are an 'outdoorsy' family or couple who is looking for a down to earth, genuine and honest place to stay and explore this beautiful part of the world from then Oberraindlhof is the hotel for you. If you are looking for gold-plated taps, cocktail bars and a 'buzz' think again.||||In a nutshell, we would return to this hotel in a heartbeat.

The Oberraindlof is a good place to stay in the Val di Senales and ensured we had a great time discovering this corner of Alto Adige. It's popular with German and Italian families and couples who come for the hiking and many attractions. It's not easy to give a single rating so I've broken it down into several elements:||||Location: 5||The maso is well positioned midway along the Val Senales and provides a convenient base from which to explore the valley. It's also 15 minutes from Naturno and close to many of the sights along the Val Venosta valley. There's a bus stop nearby and the road to the accommodation is very easy to drive with a convenient parking. Also, hikers can set out directly from the maso on well indicated paths up and down the valley.||||Food: 4||We opted for half-board and enjoyed reading the dinner menu each morning and choosing from the 2 or 3 dishes the chef was planning. Breakfast was plentiful with sweet and savoury options, fresh bread and an orange juicer everyone loved. Evenings were equally good although service was occasionally slow and the night the chef had off featured an average buffet. Overall great ingredients, generous portions and traditional dishes served by waiters in local dress.||||Service/Welcome: 3.5||The Maso is big with around 30 rooms and lots of guests. Staff and owners work very hard and are busy throughout the day. Still they have time to chat and make sightseeing recommendations. Not everything is explained on arrival but pretty soon you get the idea of how things work and join along. A brochure explains it all and no one is too busy to answer questions. Discount cards are provided to several sights and there are plenty of maps and reading material about the region.||||Rooms/Decor: 3||The Maso goes back centuries and is decorated in classic Tyrollean style. There are several buildings and the old house where we stayed has the smallest rooms. Unfortunately we were not informed of bathroom size prior to booking and were surprised to find ourselves in very close quarters. An alternative room was offered however the difference in price led us to remain in room number 8. If you prefer to shower in a bathroom larger than what you'd find on an airplane avoid the attic rooms. Beds were comfortable, the skylight had a nice view of the mountains and the TV broadcast channels in German and Italian. Rooms cleaned daily.||||Activities: 2||Having visited several maso in the past we were expecting a working farm where children could get up close and personal with animals. This was not possible here. After dinner there was little in the way of entertainment apart from conversation and a deck of cards. Guests gather outside on the little terrace but soon went to bed. We would have loved (and recommend) getting a trampoline, ping-pong, or fuss ball table where kids and adults can play. Also, there is no dedicated recreation area and only one very sad playground toy in the back of the maso. The lack of activities is fine if you're traveling with toddlers but pre-adolescents and teenagers could use a little more stimulation.||||Special mention: ||The downstairs fountain was very convenient for filling up on water whenever we needed it and the Wednesday night Tirolese music and dancing was a lot of fun for everyone.||||Overall: 3.75||Probably would not go back (we like to change valleys every year) but we had an enjoyable weeklong stay here nevertheless.
