Little Italy and Kearny Mesa Expanding Outdoor Dining Program | Eater San Diego

"I observed O'Brien's Pub putting up a pop-up patio in front of its storefront when the Convoy Street plaza closed its shared parking lot to traffic to create outdoor seating." - Candice Woo

if you’re considering eating here, JUST DO IT. the clam chowder, lobster roll, and mudslides are so delicious. we also ordered shrimp curry and the jerk chicken, which if you can handle spice you should order. our waitress told us that the chef was Jamaican, so really flavorful delicious food. the atmosphere is so nice in the spring/summer with the outdoor seating. we sat next to the water fountain with rubber duckies!! and the mudslides tasted like spiked McFlurries. if i could rate this place higher, i would. 10/10 recommend.

Google
Good outdoor patio. Great drinks, food, and music in the afternoon. The service was non-existent. The wait staff were standing around vs attending to tables. The restaurant was practically empty due to rain, but no wait staff at the high tops. Ended up going to the bar to order drinks and food. The frozen mudslide with a floater was great as was the veggie burger. I would recommend them both. There is a great pond in the center for kids to play and catch plastic fish toys. Do not sit at the high tops unless you are using the bar for service. The bartenders were great, but the wait staff definitely needs training in customer service.

Google
We were given drink tickets here from our Newport Foodies Tour. Our drinks (Tommy's Big Ginger and a Kentucky Mule) were well made by a bartender who appeared quite overworked but was very friendly. I did not order food but saw and smelled plenty of it go by. We had a lot of food on our tour and I was full but I was almost tempted to order since it all looked great

Google
We’ve gone a few times now, to both the outside and inside portions, and we’ve never been disappointed!! I’ve tried multiple dishes, including the lobster salad roll, which was outstanding. The food, service, and atmosphere are all amazing. Everyone is incredibly nice and the food is amazing. A perfect setting and features entertainment for kids. We brought a dog once and he received amazing service and treatment as well. Definitely one of our go-to places :)

Google
Perfect “all around” spot on Thames St that has the best outdoor atmosphere on a street packed with excellent restaurants and stores. We sat in the outdoor patio area with two kids, we shared some great apps specifically the humus player was great and full sized to really share. Food was good and great for a family with plenty of options. Highly recommend here when you’re looking to get a good value and easy food service in between more posh restaurants that are very particular in their food and style.

Google
I recently visited this past holiday weekend for a birthday celebration and, as always, you guys did not disappoint … Outside dining, the atmosphere, the food, the staff, I even had a laugh with another patron over the Mac and cheese with lobster 🤭 Our server, Taylor is A+ Not only did she do her job exceptionally well, her her personality and extra attn to the smallest of detail, definitely got my attn. enough that I wanted to review her before the food and drink… The food and drink did not disappoint. It was as great as Taylor’s service. I gave the bartender creative liberty .. and he delivered deliciously. Ordered the fries and buffalo wings, which were some of the best on my list! Thank you for always being a great experience! Never disappointed!

Google
We enjoyed our dinner. Great outdoor seating area, food was good. My husband said his burger was good and I had the Greek salad which was great. Our server Miyah B was excellent. She seemed genuinely sweet and was attentive without being overly attentive. I watched her interact with kids at a nearby table and she was great. Great casual dining spot.

Google
A bit of a wait to get in. Server wasn't very familiar with the menu/ingredients of items. Food was great. Lobster mac and cheese had tons of lobster in it.

Yelp
Had a nice lunch at OB's while visiting Newport. Away from the waterfront, it was still full of guest at lunch time, but no wait to be seated. The front wall of the bar opens to a piazza with small fountain and most dining is outside under umbrellas. The fountain has toys and nets and we saw a number of kids enjoying some wet fun. Hostess stand is at the far side of the building. We walked in - but there may be parking in back. We asked to be seated in a shady spot (it. was. Hot!) and we were taken to a shady table by the sidewalk. A wall seperates the tables from the sidewalk. Our waitress was very pleasant and capable. She took the drink order and when she returned we ordered food and I asked her to be sure our waters were kept full. She returned shortly with a pitcher of water for the table. Excellent! I drank so much water. The menu is pub fare. Apps, salads, burgers, sandwiches plus some entrees like fish and chips. We both ordered sandwiches and chose the pasta salad as our side from their many side options. I also ordered a side salad. The salad arrived with our food, brought by a food runner which for me was good. The waitress checked in quickly to be sure everything was as expected. All good. The burger seemed a bit over cooked but has a nice char on it. The bun to burger ratio is good and it was fresh. My dining companion enjoyed their chicken sandwich and their vinegar based pasta salad. My side salad was a nice mix of greens with plenty of shredded carrot on top plus onion, tomato and red onion. Dressing on the side. Excellent lunch; good portion size, fresh ingredients, capable, friendly staff.

Yelp
Popped on in for a quick mudslide and glad I did. My mom is a sucker for a good mudslide and did some research and OB's came up for it! Ordered at the bar and it was already premade so it came fast and strong. Super delicious, cold and large portion. We both loved it. We bought a little souvenir and out we went. Can't wait to come again for another

Yelp
This local spot has some of the friendliest staff and great drinks/music for a lively night out in Newport. Check them out for lively nightlife and delicious beverages.

Yelp
We popped into O'Brien's Pub both hungry and thirsty. This bar more than satisfied both of our needs. Our server got our drinks quickly. The Guinness was delicious, as it should be from an Irish bar. My wife got a house Malbec, which was a pleasant surprise, for a place that may or may not serve a ton of red wine. As for the food, the portions were huge and everything tasted exceptional. My clam chowder was served almost immediately. The lobster roll was stuffed full of fresh lobster meat, served on a tasty buttered roll. This came with a side of white bean salad. The Mrs. had the grilled chicken mac and cheese. We had a great time, and as an added bonus it was bingo night. This made us hang even longer, and had a few laughs with the rest of the crowd. My only complaint was that the floors were a little sticky. This did not take away much from the overall experience.

Yelp
We always go because of the fountain so the kids can play. Last time we went they shut the fountain down because a Bachelorette party was being a group of divas. The food is never good, which is sad. The service is fine. The location and physical space is the draw.
google avatar

Shahané M.

Yelp
Food was delicious, I got the fish and chips, service is quick and attentive. I sat outside on the patio with my baby in her stroller and my dog under the table in the shade. The server brought out a water dish as soon as we sat down, I love this gesture that I didn't have to ask. PS: they have pink mustache magnets now. You can always count on getting magnets if you come to O'Briens, I have 3 now after dining here at 3 different occasions. You get them with your bill! If you're in newport I recommend visiting O'Briens Pub!

Yelp
This place was a happy surprise, stopped in for drinks and ended up getting a couple of dishes to go with them. The calamari was crispy not chewy, best I have had in a while. The Mediterranean plate was spot on light fresh and very tasty. Me and my friend shared a Jamaican jerk chicken sandwich it was amazing. The drinks were great! my friend got 2 espresso martini she said the best she has had. I had couple fruity drinks and they were spot on. The service was great, friendly without being pushy just the way I like. The place had a good vibe and great music playing. Will be returning soon if weather ever gets warm.

Yelp
As someone who is somewhere between 30%-40% Irish, I like to think I'm an authority on Irish pubs. Having been to many, O'brien's is high on my list as a great Irish pub that all in Newport should check out. Funny enough we actually tried to go there on Thursday night, but upon walking up the place looked close. There's a front bar room area that was dark, empty and had stools on the tables. Bummer, but it wasn't quite yet busy season up here so assumed they just weren't open. Well we tried again Friday.....same thing!! Confused I walked closer toward the building and realized the main entrance is to the left and of course it was open. I mentioned it to the bartender and he said that actually happens a lot. If you ask me probably worth putting a sign out front making this known. But alas, once you figure this out and go in, great bar. My sister and I ran the pool table meeting a mix of friendly locals and other tourists. The bar has a DJ that came on around 10 which was solid too.

Yelp
Atmosphere - Great!! Food - Fantastic! Drinks - Cold Service - The O'Brien's Beef Stew was the perfect stew for my taste! Dinner rolls were very delicious and hot. The Veggie wrap was really good as well. The service was extremely friendly and welcoming. I will visit this every time I'm in Newport! Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Needed a place to eat while one vacation that was dog friendly and this was the perfect spot .Delicious food and ambience.
google avatar

Amy P.

Yelp
We had a really nice lunch here. Drinks are fabulous, we had everything from Mojito's to frozen mud slides. All we're good. For lunch, we ordered mac & cheese, burgers, veggie wraps, and grilled chicken sandwiches. All were excellent, and presented beautifully. Our waitress was a doll and was really efficient and friendly. We sat outside and it was gorgeous! Great job!
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
O'Brien's is a Newport staple. The people who work there are great. It's a local hangout and will fill with tourist in the summer. Indoor bar and an outdoor bar patio offer plenty of space to find your spot. They make a very good mud slide. The food has really improved.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem!!!! You need to come thru and try the nachos! Try the local brews! Try their chowder! Try it all at least one time, It played music and had tvs on every wall, I would say it's a good spot for a bigger party or small. Either way check out this place to avoid incredibly large crowded bars... AND COME PLAY BINGO

Yelp
Second time here. I'm from CT. We came in for a small bite and drink with a few friends. The place was packed but there were still a few tables. The bar was packed and remained packed for a while. Great beer selections and happy people. Staff was pleasant and kept coming to ask what we needed. We tried their Garlic Parmigiana Fries and Seafood Cakes (shrimp, scallops and Crabs). Omg the most perfectly crispy yet not oily and flavorful fries. The seafood cakes will not disappoint you. Trust me fool of seafood and large portion. I was extremely impressed with this seafood cake. The aioli could have had a bit more flavor but still pleasant. Loved the ambiance. May be a little too loud for some but a perfect loudness for an Irish pub. Loved it!!

Yelp
This was a must stop for us due to their outdoor patio being on every "Newport Dog Friendly" list we researched! And boy are they dog friendly! Several other pups were around and they bring out a water bowl and a doggie menu. So cute! They get pretty packed on weekends so we tried to come before the bar crowd. Around 6/7PM there was only a 10 minute wait. We of course had to order mudslides and they were exactly what we needed! Their lobster roll was absolutely stuffed and served cold. Very tasty! I really enjoyed their greek salad and their fries were crispy and nostalgic. The service was a little slow and they forgot one of our items and added an extra item on our tab we didn't order by mistake, but they were understanding and accommodating. Would definitely be back and when the weather's nice, this is the spot to be!
google avatar

Jade W.

Yelp
Their beer battered fish and chips is a must try! Fish was very crispy outside and soft inside. It was a generous portion as well. Their jerk chicken is spicy and all the spices were a bit overpowering. Overall, not bad but nothing special for the chicken. The staff is really friendly and the vibe is great. There was live music and a good number of people standing around the bar area enjoying the show. Most of the seating area is outdoors and each table has an umbrella. We went on a rainy day so the umbrellas helped a bit but your food does get soaked in the rain on its way to your table and when it gets windy.

Yelp
Back to share another awesome experience at OBs! Their pizza is amazing - would absolutely recommend. Service is awesome as usual and the energy of the place can't be beat.

Yelp
I drove in to Newport (which I've done many times over the years the years) but this time was to photograph my friends wedding. I arrived a few hours early, and had some time to look for something to eat. I knew immediately that I wanted a lobster roll, when you're in Newport you might as well. I opened the app, I started looking around and found this nice Irish bar that served lobster rolls. I thought I was in heaven. I went in ordered an Oktoberfest beer, a shot of Jameson, and a lobster roll. The bartender behind the bar was great. Pleasant, and made sure I had everything I needed. The side of fries that came out with the lobster roll were really good! I say that because regular fries at an Irish bar usually are not that great. The lobster roll itself was delicious. The roll was stuffed with lobster, and a very nice portion. The bar itself is very nice. Plenty of seating inside and outside. I sat at the bar for my meal. Will definitely visit again the next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
First time at O'brien's pub; we had a nice waitress, great service! The menu was extensive, lots of options. They have lots of outdoor seating, and some indoor that you still feel like outside. The kids loved the fountain that had toys they could play with. After we left they had a live singer; we heard him play as we walked by. I had a salad with grill chicken, was ok, not a lot of chicken but still tasted good. My sister had a jerk chicken sandwich, spicy but delicious. The kids had pasta and chicken strips with fries. My sister also had a frozen mango drink that was really good. Saw a few people ordering frozen drinks and they all looked great; next time i will have to try one.
google avatar

Ann S.

Yelp
Excellent fun vibe and dogs allowed too! We had sandwiches and were very pleased. Service was slow but food was tasty! Go enjoy fun friendly vibe!
google avatar

Holly W.

Yelp
I love O'Briens but this last trip I took could have been better. It was the frying- overcooked. The kids had chicken fingers and fries. We did fish and chips. The fish had no flavor and was mostly breading. The kids- my 2 year old could have broke his tooth! I did speak up. Our waitress removed one fish and chip from the bill. Appreciate that. She shared they had a new cook. Hopefully they work on this because I love going here especially with the kids!

Yelp
Stopped in today on an overcast RI day while enjoying an instate vaca getaway for a few days. Opted to try their Beef Stew entree (for lunch-lol) since I felt the urge to warm up since the weather wasn't the best today. Definitely the right decision. Huge chunks of beef accompanied by fully cooked potatoes and massive carrots. Paired with 2 warm rolls filled my belly and prepped me for some more sidewalk trolling.
google avatar

Sara E.

Yelp
Bottom line: it's a decent pub with pub fare. You get what you expect. The outdoor patio was a nice area that allows dogs. Unfortunately, the light plastic chairs aren't great, just get some real furniture please. The service is slow, but they were quite busy and overworked, no fault on the staff. Mussels were good, a bit oversalted. Fish and chips were good, decent cuts of cod though a little dry, good fries, very nice coleslaw actually. Beer list is fine, could have more local options on tap. All in all, it's a perfectly fine, though not standout pub.
google avatar

Shawn K.

Yelp
My wife & I wanted drinks and a light snack before we settled in for the night. We wandered into O'Briens and the service, music, and food were all great! Definitely a lively place for fun!
google avatar

Kat H.

Yelp
Food and drinks were delicious. The service was a bit slow, but the staff was very friendly.

Zach L.

Yelp
Food was great, service was great! only downside was the nets in the fountain, although fun for kids, which I'm totally for..I got water flung at me a few times and it was just kind of overwhelming.
google avatar

Jean M.

Yelp
Went here after a tour drinks great, food ehhh somewhat ok app was good but who can mess up a quesadilla? Curry not curry at all and bland. If you need a quick bite maybe but otherwise go someplace else

Eric P.

Yelp
The staff is nice, the food is decent. My issue is that the prices on the menu are all wrong and found that out when the check arrived. I brought it to the waitress's attention and she just said that she would let management know. She then went and ran my credit card for the incorrect prices.
google avatar

Melissa P.

Yelp
Okay so I reviewed O'Briens when I brought my visiting family in September and now seeing it IRL- non tourist season (#winterinnewport), I have to update and give an average of both visits... and let me say it's a total disappointment. Summer was great- salmon was on point! Now it's not even on the menu :( The winter menu is small- too small. It definitely needs more add on protein- if I wanted chicken I could make it myself much cheaper. For someone who is on a limited menu for health reasons, this is not the place in the winter. The only thing I could eat was a salad with chicken. Service is the only thing preventing me from giving three stars. Our waitress was great and very kind. I guess at least they have good taste in music...
google avatar

Nehal A.

Yelp
One of rare spots in Newport that has it's own parking lot, and chance of you getting a seat at lunch/dinner hours w/o a reservation. They have both indoor and outdoor tables. There's a kids friendly fountain in the middle with toys, very popular with kids of all ages. Food wise they are decent. Seafood items are made much better than other kinds. We really liked the curry shrimp, mussels and seafood paella. The chicken wings were average, needed some more seasoning and moist. Overall a decent option to dine, right outside of crazy busy area of Newport.

Irene M.

Yelp
Fish, chips and coleslaw with a side salad were very good. Generous portions. The waitress was very nice. There was cool live music. Downside: The place was full, 25+ minute wait, we were seated out on the porch, near the fence, which kids climbed from the outside. We had draft beer, grapefruit flavor, in a plastic cup, beer bottles not allowed on the porch. Overall it was a good experience, would recommend.
google avatar

Wei H.

Yelp
Service is great and they have a fountain in the middle to let kids play water/toys. Food is just ok tho. We had mussels, chicken wings, cod, seafood paella, curry shrimp, chicken sandwich. Nothing really stands out.
google avatar

Danny G.

Yelp
Good food and friendly service and bartender. More like a typical sports bar than an Irish Pub.
google avatar

Chuck L.

Yelp
We found this place while wandering down Thames St. from our hotel. The first day (Saturday) we couldn't get in because the restaurant and outside bar were absolutely packed. There was music and frivolity, and we really wanted to go, but we didn't want to wait. We went back on Sunday and got in. The beer selection was terrific, so I opted for an nice Irish red ale. My wife ordered a cocktail. We were hungry, so I ordered a burger, and she got the clam chowder, which turned out to be her favorite of the trip (she had clam chowder at almost every place we went). In fact, we took 4 quarts home with us. The food was great, the staff and service were fantastic, and the atmosphere was fun and upbeat. We will definitely return if we ever visit the Newport area again.
google avatar

Melissa T.

Yelp
After finishing the cliff walk, my husband and I came here for a late lunch. We both started off with a drink, he had a beer and I had a seasonal hard cider. For food, he had the Lobster Salad Roll with fries, and I had the Beer Battered Fish & Chips. We both enjoyed our meals - the fish was bigger than I expected and the amount of fries was a lot. We received great customer service throughout our visit. The water fountain with ducks for kids to catch was also a fun touch.
google avatar

Samantha N.

Yelp
Great fun place, food is awesome! Had a blast on St Patty's Day, won a tshirt and had green beer
google avatar

Mary O.

Yelp
Be sure to allow plenty of time to spend here. Plenty. The atmosphere is great, dogs are allowed, and the large outdoor patio is a nice spot on a warm day. There is a fountain for kids to splash in and play while they wait, which could be a godsend because you could be waiting a very, very long time for your food. We went for a late lunch on a sunny Monday afternoon that turned into a very, very late lunch as it took over an hour for our food to arrive. When you are already really hungry, an hour is just ridiculous. A further disappointment was no lobster on the menu, despite a lobster roll being highlighted as the #1 menu item. We were there in early April, with our server telling us it was the first day the patio was open, which accounted for the delay. However, plenty of other tables received their food and turned to a new group while we waited. Her check in came only after over a half hour of waiting, and at this point in the day it really wasn't that busy. The chowder, once it arrived, was good, but the burger and chicken BLT, not so much. The kid's burger ordered arrived as a full-size big burger covered in onions, which my daughter wouldn't eat, but there was no way we were returning anything after such a long wait. The waitress took it off the bill after we pointed out the charge. We were very glad to get out of there and regret not bailing out earlier. It was a real disappointment on an otherwise beautiful day in Newport. We will go somewhere else next time.
google avatar

Pete M.

Yelp
My brother and I ordered the Angus burgers cause they sounded so good I especially thought the cooking would be on point because they qualify the 'doneness' of the meat on the menu We both ordered Medium done I expected some redness. What I got was a well done burger with no red whatsoever So much so I was embarrassed I had recommended based on Yelp and suggested perhaps a Walmart Angus burger would have been a wiser choice I think they require more staff as well. Waitress was over burdened forgot I had requested relish and was too hurried to pick up check Overall disappointed that I followed Yelp on this one

Debra B.

Yelp
Ambience is so cute. Have a pond for children to fish for rubber duckies. Service was quick and friendly. Had chicken blt wrap, shrimp cocktail (huge shrimp) and chowder, all yummy.

Sydney H.

Yelp
Just stopped in for a quick drink. Vibrant, fun, spacious outdoor patio with a comprehensive bar menu.
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
A good little restaurant/bar. We arrived close to when the kitchen was closing but our waitress didn't rush us and the food arrived quickly. The fish and chips were quite good. Once the kitchen closed, the place seemed to take on more of a bar feel, the music changed, families quickly left and it seemed to attractive a younger crowd. This isn't bad, just something to note. I can see this being a good spot to watch a game as they had a few TVs in the covered bar area. I'd come back when in the area.
google avatar

Martha W.

Yelp
I'm really not sure who here is leaving bad reviews of this great place but they're definitely just not in the right mindset. We happened to come across O'Brien's while looking for a fun and lively place to eat with the entire family on the main road in Newport, Thames St. (and if that isn't the main street to you then go look at another review). We had the best time here! The drinks (from beer, wine and old standbys to Caribbean great ones like a Bahama Mama) were great, the atmosphere was fun. Everyone is welcomed, adults as well as kids who can go "fishing" in the center fountain, and anyone looking to watch a game in any of the TV's around the bar area, as well as your (friendly) dog if you'd like! I'm still here trying to finish my "Twenty-four Tini" before walking back to our hotel and it keeps getting better and better as the evening comes on. I would absolutely make it a "must stop" in Newport if you are planning on coming! I do not leave many reviews but I had to on this one! Thank you Taylor S. for the great service!!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and was greeted and seated promptly. Ordered Drench onion soup, beef stew., and fish and chips. French onion soup arrived piping hot in a crock covered with plenty of cheese. Broth was very flavorful with a good depth of flavor with plenty of onions. Nice sized crouton and plenty of the afore mentioned cheese. A very tasty soup. The beef stew arrived steaming hot with large chunks of potatoes, carrots and very tender beef chunks and the stew was nice and thick and seasoned perfectly. The fish and chips found the cod in a beer batter fried to a golden brown and large. Accompanied by very crispy French fries and a large portion of coleslaw. All in all an excellent meal with a very pleasant and attentive waitstaff. Definitely will return to try the rest of the menu. Oh, and the Irish coffee wasn't bad either.
google avatar

Kim S.

Yelp
Food tasted great. We went for lunch and it wasn't busy. We were seated right away but then waited 10-15 minutes before our waiter came over. 2 other tables were seated after us and before we saw our waiter. After the waiter finally came, service was very good but we had set a time limit and we're 4 minutes away from leaving. I am glad we stayed. The macaroni and cheese was wonderful and the fish and chips were exactly what I hoped for. Slaw was not to my liking but I am not a huge slaw fan. At least it wasn't drowned in mayonnaise dressing.

Kevin B.

Yelp
I took my son in law and his best man here for a quick bite right before his wedding to our daughter. Food was extremely quick and very good. The waiter was excellent and expedited our food.
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
Service is outstanding food was delicious if your in the area I highly recommend stopping in you won't be sorry .... Thank you for the fantastic meal really appreciate it great being of our vacation :-)

Dan M.

Yelp
This had a whole bunch of seating available including an outdoor patio. There was an outdoor bar and not too sure if there was one inside too. Regardless, the service was appreciated, and the food came out in a timely matter. The menu was typical bar food with a few twists I saw too. The Cajun chicken quesadilla ($12.50) was ordered as an appetizer. It contained blackened chicken, Cajun creole sauce, cheddar jack cheese, jalapeno peppers and peppers. I thought this was going to be a little spicier than it was. It was still good especially the sauce. I had the reuben ($12.99) as my entrée. I ordered it with a side of pasta salad, which was a tad too sweet. The reuben was solid especially the rye bread and the amount of toppings. My only issue was the thickness of corn beef, would have liked it a little thinner. I also tried the lobster salad roll, again great bread, and it was filled to capacity with lobster meat. I would have preferred more mayo!! Will I go back? I would.
google avatar

Joshua G.

Yelp
This place was good, even if my review was, oh gosh, has it really been two years! Time flies! Anyway, the food was delicious, and the service, while a bit slow, made up for it in friendliness.
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
Great little casual pub for dinner. Service was fantastic and the food was also very good at a reasonable price. I would totally go back again!!!! I am a Reuben guy and it was VERY good. I wish the bread was grilled and not toasted and it would have been way up my list of top Reuben's. We also got the pulled pork nachos for an app and they were yummy!!!
