Celebrate St. Patrick’s Eve at These Spirited Chicago Pubs | Eater

"There are specials every day of the week at this River North stalwart. And on St. Patrick’s Eve, O’Call plates are just $13. For the uninitiated, these “garbage plates” are packed with fries and macaroni salad and topped with your choice of cheeseburger, chicken fingers, or pulled pork. It’s the perfect way to fill up as you get to celebrating, preferably with a Jameson cocktail, like the OC Fashioned (their take on an Old Fashioned). Open until 4 a.m., O’Callaghan’s is the spot for the real party people dedicated enough to carry their celebrations well beyond St. Patrick’s Eve." - Ariel Kanter

Stopped into O’Callaghan’s for a couple drinks and some egg rolls, and everything was really good. The drinks were solid, and the egg rolls hit the spot. It’s got that classic, comfortable pub vibe that makes you want to stick around for a while. Friendly service and a laid-back atmosphere – definitely a great place to grab a drink and a bite in the area.

We came here after our wedding ceremony. All the ladies were so nice. We could’ve asked for a better time to celebrate. Absolutely recommend this place. Love it.

Came here for a night to chill and have good drinks and conversations and to see our favorite bartender (shoutout to Kevin!) We got high noons, pomegranate margaritas, and an order of sriracha bourbon wings (with a side of pickles!) Whoever the chef was, he knew what he was doing when he made those wings! 100/10!

Google
Classic Irish pub with Guinness, Smithwick’s, and Harp on tap. They also have several Irish whiskeys. Stopped in for a pint while killing time. Can’t wait to come back again to try the food.

Can't go wrong here. Great place and friendly people. Special call out to Rachel, the bartender. She was so swamped but still made me feel welcome. Thanks! I will be back. It's one of the best Irish bars in Chicago!

Google
Traditional Irish pub, tvs for sports. BEST Ruben Sandwich I have had, and I seek them out!

Google
Lively Irish bar. Great selection of beers, friendly staff. Tasty food at great value prices. Highly recommend if you want a quick bite to eat or a pint.

Google
Been coming to this joint twice a year for a really long time. I really like it. I just had my last round ever with a Guinness and small shot glass Jameson costing $23 without tip. They’re absolutely mad. Good thing there are around 25 more Irish bars downtown. So long Callaghan’s.

Yelp
We stopped here for a nightcap on a Saturday evening. Once we were permitted to enter we liked everything about this place. Service was fast and friendly, there was plenty of available seating and we took the opportunity to play darts and a few games of pool. The reason for giving only 3 stars is because of their doorman. When we arrived there was really no one in line ahead of us, and when we asked if we could go in or if they needed to see ID or if there was a cover, the guy told us the place was very busy inside and they weren't allowing anyone else in at that time. A second doorman asked if it was just the 2 of us. When I said it was, he allowed us in. We quickly found that the first guy at the door basically lied to us. There were no crowds at all on either the first or second floor, there were plenty of open stools at both bars, plenty of open tables and no wait for service. I'm not sure if the first guy was discriminating against us because of age and he was trying to admit only a younger crowd, if he was unhappy because we were 2 guys with no women in our party or what his problem was. Regardless, we had a good time here..The pool table was level and in good condition which one doesn't always find at a bar. It took quarters only (no bill receiver or credit card reader) but the bar staff were happy to give change. The dart board was a bit dodgy; It accepted bills which was good, but the board wouldn't lock in place and kept trying to spin to the side as we were throwing. Also, they only had 6 darts to give us, 2 of which had broken tips, so we had to keep handing off a few darts to each other between turns so both of us could throw. No matter, it worked for our needs. All that said, the doorman nearly never let us in to experience any of it, and this place deservedly gets a lower rating because of him.

Yelp
Cubs win and so does O'Callaghans! The atmosphere was amazing and our server added to that. The shepherds pie reminded me of being in Ireland. The Sriracha wings were perfect with my stout beer. Follow our father-son journey to all 30 MLB parks on Instagram @FatherSonFoulLines to support the dream!

Yelp
I was looking to pop into a place that would have a good Guinness where I could unwind for a little bit and this place did the trick. The perfect Guinness... very mellow spot to just hang out.

Yelp
Great Irish pub and vibe. Fairly large so you can generally get a bar or hightop spot. Perfect Guinness pour.

Yelp
We probably weren't the typical customer as we were looking for a very late dinner, and all the other kitchens nearby were closed. So 5/5 stars on that aspect. It was a chill but fun vibe, so would be interested to come back on more of a drinking night out! I will say, path back and to get upstairs felt a little sus. We went with the Reubens and were pleased that they offered turkey in addition to corned beef as an option (although it sounds like the corned beef was better). The sandwiches came with fries which was not listed on the menu, so we had ordered a side of fries = wasted food. They also were out of some of the drinks on the menu.

Yelp
Quick service everytime. I love this place because prices are reasonable and it's close to almost all of my fav restaurants. Love for the Irish and my people

Yelp
O'Callaghan's is a great Irish pub in River North that is simultaneously a Steelers bar. I came here to watch the Euro finals and had a great time. The bar staff are super friendly and the drinks are super reasonably priced. I was able to talk with a couple regulars at the bar and they were very welcoming. I will probably be back for more soccer in the future.

Yelp
Staff is awesome. Vibes are immaculate. Great spot for someone playing tourist in Chicago.

Yelp
Thank you O'Callaghan's for such fun last night in Chicago. Went to so many different bars and this was the only one that would let us in we also had great service for food and drinks! Overall I was just drinking water which they have bottled water. My friend was drinking black label on the rock and our server came by multiple times to ask if we needed anything. It was amazing and I'm so happy that the servers were so nice. We also decided to order their chili fries which are made in-house and also came with waffle fries. This was the bomb and delicious. A must for just snacking and enjoying the night.

Yelp
Went to the bar with a group of friends and it was like a typical Irish bar. However, my friends were leaving and I had called an Uber. I asked if I could stand inside while I waited and the bouncer told me no. As a female, standing alone outside of a bar at night is not comfortable nor safe. Especially since Chicago has had a lot of crime recently with fake Uber drivers scamming bar patrons. Not female friendly.

Yelp
This was a wonderful experience. Tony was incredible. The service and staff are excellent. I do have to say, you should allow staff to kick out disrespectful people. The staff are so kind and considerate, they should not have to serve people who are unkind to them. Great bar.

Yelp
Fun place great drinks, even better wings. The bartenders are always sensational! Great vibes and upbeat music! Delicious cocktails and friendly staff make it a must-visit!

Yelp
After 3 visits to Chicago since August, I finally found the holy grail of Chicago bars. Perfect in every way. Perfect beers. Perfect cocktails. Perfect service. This is a beautiful bar with amazing staff and owners. Teddy and LB were two of the best bartenders I've ever had,and I've been to a ton of bars all over the country. Family owned and operated, we were made to feel like locals who had been visiting the bar for years. Shout out to my daughter and son, who scouted out this bar ahead of my wife and I. They said you've got to come here and they were so right. This will be a must stop for us each and every time we are in the Windy City. Thanks to everyone for making us feel so welcome!
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty good and quiet bar on a very noisy Hubbard street. We were looking for a place to get some beers and socialize and this bar was the most welcoming, everything else around was way too loud. The serve draft beer and a variety of food. I've ordered a classic mozzarella sticks to accompany my Blue Moon and they were served quickly and were delicious. Bartenders were nice and welcoming as well as the host. Second floor has some pool tables and another bar.

Yelp
Bar/Restaurant in North Chicago, friendly customers and staff. Tried the chicken wings they were lightly breaded and not too spicy but good. The Italian beef sandwich was thin sliced beef with spicy giardinera veggies and mozzarella au jus on a soft hoagie. The sandwich was good, and the peppers in the giardinera had a nice kick of heat. Guiness accompanied my meal. Service from the bartender Teddy was amicable the food was delivered promptly. Customers at the bar were helpful with my selection of the meal.

Yelp
Staci was our server and she was amazing! She was able to help us out and recommend fantastic drinks as well as other touristy spots! Highly recommend her as your server!!

Yelp
We came here after we went from Andy's Jazz. Didn't want to walk far, so we went inside. The place was packed for a Thursday night. The service was great. The server did a great job when my friends asked for a drink recommendation. Honestly though, can't complain. Maybe I'll stop by here again after the jazz club.

Yelp
On St. Patty's Dat, O'Callaghans thrives. The line outside wraps around the corner. This typical Irish Pub was packed to the brim with shamrocks and Guinness lining the walls. Even with it being super busy, the staff was super attentive and came to check on us every 10 minutes, even switching tvs multiple times as games were ending. The corned beef was frankly boring and pretty flavorless but this definitely isn't an everyday item. Super cool pub and definitely helped that I went on their favorite holiday.

Yelp
Stopped by after dinner with some friends for some drinks. Was surprised to see their drinks were on the cheaper side! I got a plain margarita which was really good and we all did two rounds of mystery shots (for $6, amazing!) the shots we got were like cookie shots? I can't remember what the girl said the name was but they were really good, tasted like a caramel iced coffee! Service was quick and overall a very chill spot for drinks with friends!

Susan R.

Yelp
Love, Love this place! Such a great atmosphere with awesome bartenders. Great food and beer!

Yelp
First time going here tonight and first impressions terrible. Place doesn't value customer service. Came in with my husband and his friend and was told to go upstairs, got served a drink that was straight syrup when I told the waitress she snatched the drink and instead of offering to make a new one she immediately says she'll take it off the bill, I would have never even asked for it to be removed But ok no sweat off my back, my friend said she's rude and we obviously aren't welcomed here so at that point we politely ask her to close us out. She comes, we pay the bill and leave her 20% tip despite the terrible service and instead of saying thank you she tells us "next time don't open a tab if your going to close it out and return drinks". Immediately I tell her we can do what we want and that's when she yells in my face and causes a screaming match for everyone to see, she then calls security on us. I ask the security about 10 times to direct me to a manager and he tells us he is the manager and doesn't offer anything to validate us as the customers. Obviously this place runs off of no customer service. P.S the waitress should lay off the cocacola (it's obvious and making her aggressive.) 1star won't be back

Yelp
Had such an amazing time here a few weeks ago. I brought my entire family in, and the service was amazing. Our server Jasmine was so fun and kind. She was so knowledgeable about Chicago and gave us amazing recommendations for our stay in the city. We had originally planned to bar hop, but we had so much fun here we ended up staying for hours to watch the games and mingle. The wings are really good, and the siracha was our favorite. We will definitely be returning to see Jasmine when we come back to Chicago!

Yelp
First of all, the heat was way too cranking in this place. Save on the electric bill a little. All in all pretty good experience here. I liked the bar, beers were strong and the selection was good. Wasn't thrilled about the guys next to me that kept paying 5 credits per song to get their songs to the front of the line on TouchTunes. I could see why they had to pay so many credits. No one in their right mind would let them DJ. At that point we went upstairs which was a good time.

Emily H.

Yelp
We wandered in here after walking past and are so glad we did! The bartenders were great, the beer selection was perfect. But the highlight for sure was the sirracha bourbon wings. Truly the best wings I've ever had!

Yelp
Everything was great quick fish and chips was awesome The service is amazing. The pricing was really good. The beer is awesome.

Yelp
A friend and I came here to visit recently. It's your typical Irish bar that serves more beer than hard liquor. It was extremely loud and hard to talk even though the bar was not crowded. Not being a beer drinker I ordered a Stoli raspberry and club soda that didn't really taste like there was much liquor in it. The wine pour was rather average at best. Servers were very nice and friendly. I'm not opposed but there was definitely the smell of pot here. I think people were going out the back to smoke but I'm not sure. We didn't eat here. I'm not sure if I would return. I prefer Emerald Loop or Kerryman for Irish bar.

Yelp
This place knows how to pour a proper pint of Guinness! The bar staff were all great and attentive. Def stop by for a drink!
google avatar

Yelp
Bartenders are nice but slow service. Food was decent bar food. I really liked the jalapeño poppers. Nice place. Good to go for a drink.

Yelp
Great prices come and and split a burger with someone! Love this Irish Pup! It's also in the middle of it all! Great location, great food. Inhaled my food! They also have fish and chips that are to die for.

Yelp
I came in looking for some brake pads but they were out. They had lots of beer and liquor, however. Coolest auto parts store I've been to in a while.

Connor R.

Yelp
Ordered a 2 beers and 4 straight shots, tipped $1 a drink and was yelled at by the waitress that she deserved more for delivering the drinks and water to our table.
google avatar

Yelp
This spot is my new go to in the hood! Not sure what more you could want. They have tons of tvs. They play awesome music during the day. The food gets the job done and the beer is cold, fairly-priced and served by the nicest bartender in the neighborhood. I forget her name but I bet she remembers mine...she was introducing herself to everyone. That is classy and I loved it. I didnt forget her name on purpose, Im just horrible with names. I will tell you what, Im going back to re-introduce myself to the bartender, have a couple cold beers, watch some sports and enjoy the music. This place is head and shoulders above the others in the hood. If you think otherwise, I will take this place to myself. It's awesome.

Kenesha S.

Yelp
The food was ok. I heard so much about the wings being good but they were ok. Nothing to really go back for a repeat experience. Customer service was not very friendly
google avatar

Yelp
Kayla was a great server. The bar is exactly what it should be. Good food, relaxed crowd And all the games on Tv.

Yelp
Friendly service, and after dealing with fussy children for 3 days in a row, a welcome break for adults, who enjoy alcoholic beverages

Yelp
Excellent bar with amazing service. Teddy is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to bars and restaurants in Chicago. Very cool old bar that's been there for 30 yearsz

Christopher K.

Yelp
Worst place in Chicago. Do not go here. The only thing I would say is no way is the only 5 star review about this place. He is amazing. But other than him. This place is 1 star.
google avatar

Sheena F.

Yelp
I don't recall when I came here but it was maybe a month before this Corona nightmare went down. The reuben sandwich was immaculate, nestled between two perfectly toasted bread slices. The waffle fries were crispy gifts from heaven. Honestly, in this lockdown, the one thing I am looking forward to is getting my hands on that sandwich and fries again. I thought I should let you guys know.

Yelp
Decent pub that gets the job done on a Friday afternoon. Now that there are so many changes in terms of operating hours to places in the area, it is good to see that this spot has hung strong throughout the pandemic. The drinks selection is no frills (to paraphrase Moe Syzslak, "We have beer....and beer"). I opted for a Stella Artois on tap and my drinking companion had a Blue Moon. I probably wouldn't venture into the wines or mixed drinks, although at one point the bartender was concocting a couple seated nearby a drink with Midori and what looked like pineapple juice. I bet this place would have a solid scotch/Whiskey selection seeing as how it is an Irish Pub, but unfortunately that did not sound good to me on a hot August afternoon. Looks like an autumnal pub crawl might be in my future to sample these offerings.

Ryan L.

Yelp
Came in on a whim the other night after trying a few other places. Joe the bartender was so welcoming and nice. They didn't have Jameson Orange, which we like to use in our green tea shots so he offered to try and make them using orange juice. Not gonna lie we were skeptical at first but they were even better than the way we're used to!! He made us feel at home and we ended up staying longer since he was so attentive. Dylan was also quick and welcoming. We will definitely be coming back when we're in town.
google avatar

Kelsey S.

Yelp
Awesome Irish bar. Fun vibe and great music. Stopped in for a car bomb and some beers. service was fast and the bartender was friendly. Within walking distance of a lot downtown. They had a lot of beers from all over the world which was awesome. Definitely would come back here.

Yelp
Soooooo the only reason I'm giving this place two stars is because how bad my group was treated and I wasn't a fan of the continuous genre changes in music. The drinks were normal, prices were normal, and over all vibe was fine. The music went from oldies to sad to country to hip hop to random songs I've never heard of or recognize. I'm huge on music at bars and I didn't like the constant changes with different genres that didn't help set the tone of the bar. As for the service, my friends and I basically all ordered and then closed out, paid our bill, and TIPPED our server who didn't provide any special service or even have a good additive a minimum of 20 percent. Then my friend ordered another round of shots and some chicken wings. We had the shots but he did not like the chicken wings at all. So he told the server he wanted to close out again but really didn't like the wings. So she rudely took away the food and brought the check. So then he paid and didn't tip her on this check. (He had already tipped her well from the checkout before) And she came back cussing at us and told us all to leave and that it's not her fault he didn't like the wings. She could have approached him calmly but chose to be extremely hostile and immature about the situation. I was shocked and we left. Never been kicked out of a bar before so this was interesting, especially since my party was nothing but respectful.

Yelp
The staff and food were awesome. Very friendly Pub and they make you feel like a local! Not many great Pubs around and this one you gotta try. Won't be disappointed. We were visiting from St. Louis.

Mark W.

Yelp
Embarrassment to the 32 counties! If you want an Irish bar in Chicago this is the opposite of what you want. Bar guy threw us out and threatened to assault us for wanting to give a cash tip instead of a credit card tip? Anyway, this place is the one of only places open late on Monday and clearly pays it staff terrible so it will never change... Regardless every bad review has a cringey response from the owner "Peter S." telling the customers how wrong they are! Jesus Mary and the donkey you claim your guys have Irish roots.. rotter!

Isankar S.

Yelp
Doorman didn't let us in because we were wearing loungewear pants. And the moron was letting people in wearing shorts and flip flops. Then when i asked he says you gotta respect the dress code. Please remove this line from your website: 'Established in 1991, we have maintained our reputation as a friendly, fun and comfortable Irish pub. ' Also please put some sense into your doorman/security to treat people with respect. They are driving away customers right from the door and your management has no idea.
google avatar

Yelp
My friends and I came in for a quick beer after a long day at work, and Rachel gave us the best service we have had in a long time. She was very fast greeting us and had a great attitude! Over all wonderful service!!!!!
google avatar

Jennifer J.

Yelp
It was our first night in Chicago and one of my co-workers was celebrating her 40th so we hit up this classic Irish pub just around the corner from our hotel and had a blast! We sat right at the bar and enjoyed a front-row seat and fast, friendly service. I ordered the obligatory black 'n tan (yum!), and one of my comrades ordered a round of shooters too. Duck farts? I don't remember but mine was delicious! We also enjoyed a big ol' bowl of pretzels and a hummus plate - although I was so full from dinner I didn't eat much. It was a raucous time and a fun way to celebrate our first night in Chi-Town. I'd definitely go back if I found myself in the Windy City again!
google avatar

Grant A.

Yelp
I like the design of this place. Irish pub, beautiful patina of wood on the bar. There were 2 to 3 bartenders working behind the bar and they checked on my group well. Brought me a water when I had enough beer. Went with a local Revolution Freedom of Speach beer.

Yelp
Always a favorite! Great drink selection, good selection of bar food, nice waitstaff.
