First of all, I disagree with the $$$ rating ... this restaurant is certainly at the high end of the price level in Boston ... I'd say $$$$. The least expensive steak on the menu is $58 (8 ounce filet mignon) and comes with nothing. Sides are $15 - $20 each, which is on par with what The Palm and other steak houses do. The sides are family style ... and much will be wasted in a dinner for 2. Given that you pretty much have to order a side with a steak ... in actuality, your $58 eight ounce steak will end up costing you $72, if you want to make it a proper meal. The steaks only go up from there.
The lobster bisque soup was one of the best things we've had. It comes with 4 or 5 pieces of lobster, which the waitress pours a thick, creamy soup over. It is huge! The portions for everything (minus the steaks) here are huge! I'd much prefer getting 25% less food and paying 25% less as there was a lot leftover. Each side dish could easily feed 3 - 5 people. We had creamed spinach (just okay ...), truffle mac and cheese (the best dish of the evening!) ... and Brussel Sprouts (these almost came infused with balsamic vinegar which made them taste a bit more desert-like than savory.) Don't miss the macaroni and cheese side ... the other sides were blah.
The steaks were done well. I ordered mine medium and it came with zero pink ... more of a grey color inside. I'd honestly have considered it medium well. We had the filet mignon and the ribeye. While there were no issues with the quality or the taste, they weren't seasoned as well ... and didn't have that crisp char on the outside ... as some other steakhouses we've gone to. On a scale of 1 - 5, I'd say the steaks were a 3.5 or 4. We all enjoyed our meals but they didn't blow our socks off, given the high price.
We got creme brulee and a cake for dessert. Very good ... again, HUGE portions ... unlike with the main course and sides, we felt the $15 - $17 cost of the desserts was a good value. 4 of us split two desserts with plenty left over. I really liked the creme brulee ... although I've never had a bigger portion. It seriously was like a gravy boat full of creme brulee with some fruit on top. The cake was equally as big but very tasty.
The waitstaff was a bit intrusive. I felt like they always broke in as someone was in the middle of a story. Usually waitstaff, especially at business friendly restaurants, are trained to come into the picture at the right moments. It seemed like anytime they came in to take an order, check in on the meal or ask if anyone needed another beverage, it couldn't have been a worse moment. Also, the table busser seemed insistent on clearing half eaten plates when clearly we were not finished. We had to shoo him away literally 3 or 4 times in between the time the main courses were served and dessert. He also took the half full sides and did not even ask if we wanted them wrapped up.
The vibe here is very good ... dim lighting and a modern feel with a wall of soft lighting. The booths are wide enough where 4 people can sit comfortably and they have a few longer tables as well. The bar area was absolutely packed and it was hard to navigate your way through the crowds. We were surprised at how packed the restaurant was on a Wednesday ... you'll definitely need a reservation here. Most of the diners were pretty classy ... I didn't see to many t-shirts and jeans, which has sadly become the trend lately in expensive restaurants.
Overall, I wouldn't rush to return here ... but the atmosphere and the menu were good enough where I will likely return at some point. The prices are as high as I've seen in any major city for a non-tasting menu dinner. Dinner for 4 was just over $600 with the tip. The value didn't really match up, in my opinion, but I've had worse expensive dinners. For business or celebrations, you probably can't go wrong here. I like the atmosphere here better than The Palm ... but the steaks at The Palm are better than here. Boston is a corporate city with, honestly, some of the worst dining options in any major city. If you are coming in for dinner, there is a garage 400 Seaport next door that is around $22 after 5 p.m. or on Spothero.
