This location of Odd One Out Tea is a small shop with just a couple of long benches along the window, so it's not a place to relax and slowly sip on tea. I like the display on the right side of the store, filled with jars of tea leaves to allow a sampling of each fragrance before ordering. Like a lot of modern premium brands, this store brews tea to order in espresso machines.
Signature Icy Peak Boba, Large, Perfect Sugar, 5 Piece Ice, w/ Coconut Sugar Boba ($9) - That's one expensive drink... I went with a tea I thought I had never had before - the Icy Peak. It's only after ordering that I realized that other places call this Dong Ding. I feel like Odd One Out has good technique for crafting their drinks, but I think there's a reason that coconut sugar is typically not used as a sweetener. The flavor of the coconut, while on the milder side, is somehow too strong, overpowering much of the flavor of the tea. Dong Ding has a somewhat distinctive fragrance and unfortunately I think it's covered up too much, becoming muted in the background. In addition, the "perfect" sugar level (aka 50%) here is too sweet and more similar to 75% at other shops. I feel like that also contributes to the issues with the tea. With that being said, I can tell that the drink is high quality, being pleasant without any harshness, thin consistency but full bodied fruity coconutty, lightly nutty flavor. I believe the coconut flavor comes entirely from the boba. The pearls seem to be marinated in coconut sugar for a long time, giving the distinctive flavor strongest around the pearls. They have almost the perfect cook, giving a chewy bounce that makes them very pleasing to consume.
Milk Tea Rating: 4.5/5
Boba Rating: 5/5
Interestingly enough, I thought I saw a fructose machine in the back. For being a premium brand, I thought they would avoid fructose syrup. But there wasn't any of the harsh notes in my drink, so perhaps I was mistaken.
Before settling on the coconut sugar boba, I asked the bobarista what the silk boba is. Apparently those are agar based boba, so more similar to crystal boba than tapioca based ones.
My description of the tea seems like harsh criticism, but the fact is that I did enjoy the drink a lot, hence my rating final 5 star rating. I will be visiting again, either this location or others, for their other teas. Reminder for myself: get 25% sweet max and depending on the tea, skip on the coconut sugar boba. The boba is really good but I think it only pairs well with stronger teas.
Bathrooms - I don't think they have a customer accessible one.
