10 Best Places for Picnic Supplies in D.C., According to Eater Editors | Eater DC

"Odd Provisions proudly stays stocked with local cheese, jams, pickles, and ready-to-eat items like ice cream sandwiches. If you’re lucky, you might even come by when local vendors are offering tastings of delicious foodstuffs. This corner market also has gift baskets filled with tinned fish, sopressata, and sea salt caramels for an extra-fancy picnic session, or you can grab prepared salads and sandwiches that change seasonally. There are plenty of small parks in Columbia Heights to camp out with a fancy charcuterie haul, plus some lovely larger green spaces in nearby Petworth, like Sherman Circle." - Emily Venezky

Really special store that has just about everything one could look for. Really helpful staff and very responsive to questions and requests.

My niece and her boyfriend recently moved to DC from Australia. I was looking for a housewarming gift I could organise for them from the other side of the world and I’m so happy I found Odd Provisions. The customer service was absolutely top notch, with messaging me all the details, providing flexible options for goodies and even sending through a photo to confirm I was happy with the selections. My niece and her BF received it today and absolutely loved it. Thank you!

Google
Charming convenience store. They have a lot of cute Knick knacks and fresh made food. They often carry a lot of very DC brands and we love to support local business. Wish they would open more around the city!

I wanted to send a basket of "cheer" to my daughter and son-in-law who were dealing with illness. I filled out the custom gift request form and submitted it. Jess got back to me quickly and helped me put together a lovely tin filled with delicious food that I know they will enjoy. The variety and quality of food products are first class. The website is easy to navigate and the service is superb. I highly recommend.

Google
Odd provisions or “Odds” as we affectionately call it makes the neighborhood. I love this neighborhood and Odds enhances the delightfulness, charm, comfort, convenience and vibe of the entire place. It’s perfect for everything from a lazy week grocery haul, a quick lunch, a gift, flowers, or a charcuterie spread (I got my entire Xmas spread here). Everyone who works there is absolutely delightful and profoundly helpful. They are even open to product suggestions and requests from customers. I’ve requested multiple products that they actually stock now!! They consistently go above and beyond on all the things. The employees make an effort to call regular customers by name. And they are even willing to do things like sell me some sliced cheese or mayo from their bulk stash in the back if they don’t have what I’m looking for or if I’m having a sandwich emergency!! There’s not a lot of places like this anymore, a sweet local, thoughtful grocery store that is impeccably stocked and designed with owners and staff that create a true neighborhood vibe.

Jess helped me arrange a custom gift hamper of goodies all the way from Australia for a 50th birthday delivery in DC. The items were delicious and delivered on the requested day. Great communication and easy payment option. much gratitude !

Yelp
5+ stars for customer service and products! I was in search for a gift basket to have delivered to my friends who live in DC (I'm just north in Philly). I contacted Odd Provisions via their website for a custom gift basket. I received an immediate response from Rachel with a beautiful selection from their store. Each item she selected was of good quality and unique; I found this to be better than any gift basket I found online from the big companies. Rachel helped me through the whole process: curating the basket, greeting card selection, delivery and payment. I was blown away with Odd Provisions' customer service. I look forward to visiting their store when I'm in town.

Yelp
They have all the brands I forgot I loved. WYLD! AARDVARK SAUCE! I am already putting in an order for my favorite spicy jelly. I cannot wait to return for a mini picnic. They gave everything you need to snack on, a microwave to heat it up, and a cute patio seating area. Only misfortune is they don't accept EBT....yet?!?!!

Yelp
Very cute corner market. Popped over after brunching down the street at El Chucho. This store is aptly named, they have every odd and end you need and never thought you needed: plants, condiments, bath salts, beer, wine, fresh salads and lasagnas...inumerable to list. Wish I lived walking distance to this little gem, I'd be there every day!

Yelp
What a complete gem. I stumbled upon Odd Provisions after moving into the neighborhood, and have been obsessed ever since. It's a small boutique market, carrying an eclectic mix of raw ingredients, prepared food, snacks and specialty items. You'll find really fancy items (like expensive Maldon flake salt) alongside cheap junk food (like bags of chips). Whatever you do, get their iced coffee: they keep cups with giant coffee ice cubes in their freezer, so you just grab one and pour yourself some iced coffee to go. If you have an allergy or dietary restriction, they've got plenty of options as well. They carry gluten-free deli items and vegan cookies and vegetarian pupusas. But also the selections in store get changed up all the time, which keeps it fresh. What I probably love the most is how incredibly accommodating the staff are. If you ask for an item and they don't carry it, don't be surprised if they order it afterwards. Also, multiple times I've asked after an item that's sold out (like raisins or red pepper flakes) and they'll find some in their kitchen to give to me for free. They're also open until 9pm, and right nearby some stellar bars in the area, so it's a great stop for a little snack before or after grabbing drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
Interesting little neighborhood shop with a lot of random items, cool spot though! There's a variety of snacks, frozen foods, sauces, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Prices are a bit high, but I guess that's expected for a place like this.

Yelp
What a great experience! When I was laid up for 3 weeks, I was gifted a bunch of stuff by my niece (through some delivery service) and ate most of it but some of the packaged food I didn't want. The co-owner was totally gracious, took it back and gave me store credit. Now THAT'S good service... Additionally, the store inventory is what I would call 'carefully curated', i.e., it's all top quality stuff: I recognized the brand names of a lot of food products that I had already tried and appreciate from other gourmet stores. It's not cheap but you can have confidence that what you're getting is top shelf...

Yelp
Odd Provisions is a trendy general store selling many local products from wine/beer to cookies to produce. It's along 11th Street NW in Columbia Heights and near many great restaurants like Bad Saint and Makan. During the pandemic, they limit customers, require masks and space people out inside, which can be a little difficult in a small space. A few standouts is the craft beer section and the candy section complete with locally-made cookies from Surprisingly Baked.

Yelp
If you're looking to send the perfect gift basket to someone in the DC area, Odd Provisions is your place! I'm located in Los Angeles and wanted to send a friend a gift to celebrate an important milestone. I looked at a few similar shops in the area, but none of the packages really spoke to me. Then I came across Odd Provisions and saw that they had a custom option. I submitted a custom order form and heard back from Jessica within a few hours. She created a basket the same day that worked with my budget, and incorporated all the flavors and snacks I knew my friend would love. The process was quick, easy, and affordable. 5 stars. AND THEN.... Jessica emailed me the day of to let me know the delivery window (I requested a nighttime delivery which she was able to accommodate) AND to ask if she could include a bouquet of flowers FREE OF CHARGE because she had extra (and wanted the bouquets to go to good homes). I would give 10 stars if I could. I wish I had more friends in the DC area to give gift baskets to!

Yelp
I love snacks and anyplace in the Columbia Heights area that isn't always packed, is right up my alley. But and there are always buts, Odd Provisions is very much a hipster spot. Though usage of the term is waning, supplanted by millenials, Odd Provisions is one of those markets. Now, I like Odd Provisions, because the set-up is cool, everyone working there that I've interacted with is nice and there are cool snacks, I like the chip and drink selection a lot. Yes the prices, can be a little more than other places but I'm not mad at that. Rent's high for everyone and chains make it hard out here for variety--the stuff of life. Now the hipster element that I found off putting is I personally, hate when products, produced by non-native speakers use AAVE on the label or for the brand name. It just comes off, in a word, "wack" to me. Maybe I was just in sad mode that day but I doubt it. I feel like that's something that tends to happen most with smaller companies and brands, and a hook is necessary but don't be being egregious with it.* On a side note. They Odd Provisions has a really nice selection of local products. I bought some tea cubes because they looked cute and I love tea and come to find out, they were made on Bladensburg Road NE. So, do check out Odd Provisions. Get some sauces for that stir-fry you are cooking tonight to save money or fresh onigiri for the road. *I am well aware that "be" alone would suffice in Standard American English. In African American Vernacular English, I used the uncommon yet grammatically correct "be being" to add emphasis.

Yelp
This is the yuppy bodega of my dreams. It's incredible that they can stock such a wide range of excellent, high quality products in this little corner store. There is nothing in here that is accidental - every last time seems to be carefully curated and you can tell they do their damnedest to source DC-made items. I particularly appreciate their selection of plant-based foods, especially basically Giant has a woefully underwhelming selection and Yes Organic is not close to enough to run to in a pinch. They have vegan ice cream, cheese, frozen meals, prepared meals, etc. They pick the best products in each category too, so you can tell they've done their research, and it's appreciated. No, I'm not doing my grocery shopping for the week here, but I love to pick up treats, wine, and the odd avocado or tomato (their produce is very decently priced!) every now and again. I've also picked up little housewarming/dinner party gifts here too because their spreads, dips, chips etc are very unique and perfect to share. And the staff are all fantastic and helpful. Feel super lucky to have this gem in my neighborhood!

Yelp
Very nice shop with kind and helpful staff, and a good selection! Happy to have moved so close to a place like this. As a person who cares about other people, the mask mandate makes me feel safer shopping here (especially in comparison to larger stores) and, to me, shows just how much this shop cares about making a comfortable shopping experience for its disabled customers. Would recommend anyone in the neighborhood stop by!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was pre-prepared but it was fantastic. They have a really cute patio to eat on as well. Their wine selection is also excellent, the only reason I would give it 4 stars is because you can't actually drink the wine there

Lori J.

Yelp
I am new to the neighborhood and was walking back from 14th Street. The storefront and patio looked so inviting I had to stop in before heading home to make dinner! Well, I found my scrumptious dinner at Odd Provisions. The homemade eggplant parmesean was fabulous. I LOVE this store. Didn't have time to take it all in but am going back to enjoy lunch on their patio this afternoon. Oh, their brown butter banana bread was the perfect pairing with coffee this morning. What a gem for this neighborhood!!

Yelp
Very small but surprisingly complete corner store bodega. The only thing they are missing is a bodega cat! Odd provisions specializes in providing a large breadth of specialty and local foods. I got some kombucha, siracha, and local coffee beans from Lost Sock Roasters. It was on the expensive side of things, but I got expensive stuff, items that would cost a lot anywhere. I was impressed by the breadth of meats and dairy. They also had batch brew coffee available for the morning (and afternoon, it was about noon time when I visited). This is not a large market. It's smaller than most corner markets, but it has an incredible array of items that are super high quality, and that's why I am giving it 5-stars.

Yelp
Odd Provisions is a new corner market that opened up in the Columbia Heights 'hood. I was super excited to hear about their opening, so the hubs and I made made sure to check it out on the weekend. The market itself is super cute, as it has basic grocery items (milk, yogurt, cheeses, juices, etc.), fresh produce (squash, leafy veggies, etc.), an interesting selection of beer and wine, as well as other local baked goods (cookies, brownies, chocolate bars, etc.) coffee, and some greeting cards (!). The market itself is bright, a minimalist type of a decor (but, super cute!), and just a nice selection of high-quality items. I bought a Turkey & Ham on a pretzel roll, a Pimento & Cheese sandwich, a couple of wine as gifts, and a small bottle of lemonade. I'm looking forward to their up and coming additions and partnership, such as Izakaya Seki's onigiri balls and bento boxes. The staff were super welcoming, super nice, and helpful. There's some limited free 2-hour parking around the neighborhood. Check this great little market out! :D +ready-made sandwiches +great selection of high-quality items +friendly staff :D +limited 2-hour free parking around the residential area

Yelp
Who knew Columbia Heights had such a cool grocery store?! Well, I teach yoga in Columbia Heights now and I happened to come across Odd Provisions as I was walking down the street. It's a totally cool, vegan friendly grocery store, with tons of unique food products, so it was like hitting the jackpot for me! Inside, there is vegan mac and cheese, Hodo Soy tofu products (the best!), unique hot sauces and spaghetti sauces, and an awesome selection of drinks. Not to mention, there's a great prepared food section. After buying dinner there for several weeks, I thought that it would be nice to write about the food I was enjoying! I'll start by saying that everything in their prepared food area is delicious. I really have not gone wrong yet. My favorite thing to grab and go is the VegItalian sandwich. It may not photograph well, but what it lacks in unphotogenicism is made up by its flavor. Layers of eggplant "salami," roasted peppers, caramelized fennel and onion are topped with "feta" and olive tapenade. The olive flavor is probably the boldest of all, but they all mesh together in the fresh bread for near perfection. Next up is the Brussels Sprouts and Apple Salad. Shaved brussels sprouts are tossed with diced apples and walnuts. A dressing made with walnut oil, cider vinegar, salt, and whole grain mustard gives it its flavor and the fresh parsley is the icing on the cake. I love the flavor and crunchiness. The Lentil Salad is another fantastic salad simply made with lentils, tomato, onions, fresh dill, and a dressing. I could eat this for dinner and be completely satisfied. The Carrot and Radish Salad may not have the sexiest name, but it was one of my favorites to try. Why? Because of the spicy harissa, which I love. Half the carrots are pan-seared and the other half are raw making a nice balance of crunchiness along with chickpeas, radishes, and a delicious dressing of olive oil, lemon juice, cider vinegar, coriander, and salt. Yum! Lastly, the Ginger Sesame Noodles are just as solid as they seem. With crunchy broccoli, red peppers, carrots, and celery, this sesame noodle dish is simple, yet tasty. Items in this store are not cheap with small salads like the Lentil Salad selling for $3.95 and the VegItalian sandwich for $8.50, but know you are getting quality food for that price. I have also confirmed with one of the owners, Jess, that although all ingredients are not currently listed on the packages, there is no honey in anything labeled vegan. Other items they sell that are fantastic include their hummus, Hummus Bialy sandwich, and Garlicky Kale salad. This store is simply awesome. Go support your local vegan friendly grocery and leave the rest up to them.

Yelp
This CoHi neighborhood market is EVERYTHING! This market has proved its existence in the neighborhood by offering a unique selection of market items. Firstly, their beer and wine selection is the reason why you should start to shop here -- seriously beer selection on fleek. But once you start shopping at Odd, you'll be all about the little yummy sandwiches and snacks. It does cost a tiny bit more, but I'd gladly pay to keep an independent establishment up and running in my area. It's stores like these that adds to the 'hoods vibe/identity. Oh, and they have a pre-made iced/hot coffee and breakfast sandwich bar on the weekends. This is life when I need to grab some caffeine and sustenance before biking off into the city. It meets needs I never knew I had. Odd, well slayed.
google avatar

Thomas P.

Yelp
Awesome customer service. Quality product. Fresh. Excellent wine selection. We are fortunate to have them in the neighborhood! Stop by, they won't disappoint!
google avatar

Chris E.

Yelp
Yes, this is where you come for a $7 pint of ice cream... but it's a neighborhood spot and if you can rationalize the splurge, do it. Friendly staff, interesting selection of items, and great beer selection. Keep on keeping on, OP!
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
A great modern bodega with well curated food and drink. I love the deli and the beer selection. The staff is friendly and are happy to assist. One time I was looking for vegetable stock and on the next visit they had some. I only wish that this store was closer to where I live.
google avatar

R M.

Yelp
One of my favorite shops in DC and such an invaluable neighborhood grocer. Odd Provisions has a wide supply of food/kitchen essentials but also an unparalleled selection of specialty products. Their mustard selection, for instance, is unreal. Ditto for salsa. I don't know what I'd do without OP!
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
Very cute country/ hipster-type store with unique groceries and prepared food. They have an outdoor patio.
google avatar

Aditi D.

Yelp
this shop has been such a quarantine go to for me. they have a small selection of almost anything you'd need - basic grocery items and tons of local special things too. great place to get supplies for a fancy cheese board or condiments for a cool recipe. i love their alcohol selection as well, great local beers and wines.
google avatar

Allan R.

Yelp
Yeah. Finally a market in cohi. The whitefish is the best in the city. They also make a fantastic hummus. It is of the same quality that you would buy while dinning at zytinya or Kapnos. Definetly a cut above anything store bought. The owner and people behind the county are courteous, friendly and knowledgeable. A little pricy. To be expected from a small gourmet market that can't buy in bulk. I would rather give them the money than giant and each peach.
google avatar

Jamie C.

Yelp
So very glad I live right next to this store! Friends and I call it the Hipster Market. I am so in love with this store with its unique picks, delicious prepared foods, and cute patio. Boyfriend loves that he can run to the corner for a case of beer. I love being able to run over to grab a quick lunch, stock up on snacks, and lounge around with an iced coffee in the front patio. Plus! Everyone who works here is so darn friendly!
google avatar

Yelp
I have never written a review before but I am compelled to write this one. The owner and Sarah did fabulous job putting together a basket for my nephew and his wife who have a 4 month old baby who has been in ICU at Children's National Hospital for almost a month. They have pretty much been living at the hospital. I felt helpless in omaha but wanted to do something for them. The basket was well received and appreciated. Great job and thank you very much. Barbara

Yelp
Cutest store I've seen in a while. They really have such an odd variety, but all of it fabulous. They have a lot of local items, from bakeries, breweries, kombucha, and coffee. They have some cool spices and really nice people. You can also buy a hot cup of coffee, and it's delicious.
google avatar

ALEXandria H.

Yelp
I love this concept. My fav thing to do is walk I. With zero ideas and just pick out a few things I've never tried before! They have some very unique spices and sauces. I love having this place in the area. The cheese selections are great and lots of vegetarian options! Not to mention the staff is sooooo nice and helpful!!! Which is always nice to walk into.
google avatar

Mitesh S.

Yelp
I'm very happy that I have this place in my neighborhood. All their products are high-quality, from pizza dough to desserts. The "milk cult" ice cream sandwiches are second to none. They also make a very strong cold coffee which I tried on a Sunday morning, and was very pleased. The staff is also very friendly and helpful.
google avatar

HannaElizabeth J.

Yelp
Omg! I love this little store. This was my first time here. They were nice and professional. I don't eat meat and they have good things for me to eat. Their egg plant sandwich is amazing. I'm very pleased.
google avatar

Stephanie W.

Yelp
I love that this store sells the staples that you could buy at Giant (veggies, dairy, etc.) for the same price or cheaper than at Giant... and while you're there, you can pick up some of the odder provisions like delicious condiments, cocktail enhancers, expertly curated wine and beer, specialty items like the highly sought after Halo Top ice cream, and homemade sandwiches, side items, frozen goods, as well as fresh bakery items--as much local as possible. They also have some gift items and things like tooth brushes in case you have a last minute overnight guest. This is a great corner/general store!!!
google avatar

Emily H.

Yelp
Love Odd Provision! Such a great addition. They carry the best vegan cheese - miyoko's - and a fun mix of necessary and tasty treats. Great wine and beer selection, and friendly staff.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
Amazing corner store selling tons of local and organic products. They also carry a great variety of prepared foods made in house. Delicious!
google avatar

Jamie R.

Yelp
I cant believe how many unique pantry items I found ... and I'm a total condiment stalker. Super nice store, can't wait to see you continue to evolve and bring great things to DC.
google avatar

Brennan S.

Yelp
This store is great! Great ingredients, beer and wine selection, the best ice cream in a pint (local, from Dolcezza), and really great pre-made meals. It's definitely more on the expensive side, but there's cheaper places to get groceries if that's what you're looking for. For the quality, I think a lot of the stuff is a pretty good deal. There's great sauces and pasta noodles. I personally love the pre-made meals, most of which range from $9-14 and almost always last me two meals -- particularly the lasagna! Really awesome customer service too. Thanks for setting up shop so close to my house!
google avatar

Alina T.

Yelp
Slightly overpriced but it's nice to have a place in the neighborhood with good coffee and excellent parties for "carry out". Wish they were open on weekdays mornings to let those of us working from home get some good coffee!
google avatar

Sophie K.

Yelp
This place is hipster af. More expensive than a corner store a block away, and they have just about as many options. I was expecting them to have more prepared foods for some reason, but they have very little. They have lots of beer and wine, snacks such as chips, packaged foods and other small items. You can't really make a meal out of anything and it's all expensive. Would rather go somewhere else.

devin m.

Yelp
Nice friendly staff. The grab and go prepared food is great when you don't feel like cooking or need a quick healthier lunch option. Beer selection is fairly priced and selection is good for the space they can work with.
google avatar

Daniela A.

Yelp
Great small market! Odd Provisions goes out of their way to support local and organic food. They have fresh baked goods delivered daily and a solid wine & beer selection. It's on the smaller end but it's my go to for weekend odds and ends. I can't say enough good things about this place. It's a great addition to the neighborhood.
google avatar

Robin O.

Yelp
Very friendly and helpful staff! This is a great store to have in the neighborhood and makes it easy to pick up a few items to throw together a meal without having to deal with the hassle of a big grocery store. I love their selection and locally sourced goods!

Elena V.

Yelp
So grateful to live around the corner from this awesome shop. Produce is always fresh and delicious; iced coffee (including a coffee ice cube) is wonderful; the daily selection of pastries/bagels is great; there's so much good beer, cider, and wine to choose from; and the outdoor seating is an excellent plus. What's more, everyone who works here is so friendly. Can't recommend this place enough--every experience is delightful.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Fabulous, quirky, odd, amazing. Really cool small grocery store with fascinating mostly-local selection of produce, baked goods, beverages, and such. Got self-serve cold brew, complete with get-your-own-cup-preloaded-with-coffee-ice-cubes-from-the-freezer and it was absolutely some of the beat cold brew I've ever had. Vegan curry lentil soup was a similarly fabulous lunch on a mild fall day, completed by pretzel rolls from Lyon Bakery. Baguettes were worth the free smells; will have to buy one next time. Beer selection looked really interesting though didn't have time to look in detail. Friendly proprietor was happy to answer questions and could easily discuss origin of products. Local places like this are worth patronizing. Some things may appear a bit expensive, but factor in the positive impacts on the local economy and my own health and it's worth it, particularly considering all the money I throw away at other large chains. Would undoubtedly go back. It's only about a block from Wonderland Ballroom (where I play sometimes with Opera on Tap) so pretty convenient corner store. 10/10
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
This place is amazing. It is locally owned and many of its offerings are locally sourced. The selection is vast and they have everything you could possible want or need. From beer and wine, to breads and cheeses, sandwiches, and fresh pre-made meals, this place is perfect for picking up a quick bite to go, or getting fresh ingredients to make a nice meal. Have gone often and will continue to do so.

Chucho E.

Yelp
Cute little gourmet shop with many specialty and local things. Nice little set up inside, very friendly staff.

Robert P.

Yelp
The best corner store in D.C.! They have an amazing assortment of foods staples--fresh reasonably-priced produce, baking needs, and ready-made dinners--as well as fun gourmet items. Perhaps best of all, they have the most outstanding selection of dry ciders I have seen in D.C.--including many from the local Anxo cidery. One-stop shopping next time you are heading to a party or need to put together a quick cocktail party!
