11 of Eastern Washington’s Best Restaurants | Eater Seattle

"O’Doherty’s Irish Grille is a staple of downtown Spokane’s social scene, known for its old-world ambiance, home-style Irish comfort food, and rousing tradition of table-top singing. Contemporary pub fare like an Irish Burger with corned beef, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing shares space on the menu with satisfying Irish classics like corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie, and bangers and mash — and the bartenders know how to pour a proper pint of Guinness, of course." - Teo Bicchieri

Google
Located right across from the riverfront park and serves up some good food. Staff was friendly and provided excellent service. Had the bar atmosphere and was a perfect stop. We tried the Sheppard pie and it’s was delicious. Some Irish whiskey was a great compliment with our bacon and cheese fries. Reasonable prices- worth stopping in if you’re walking the park.

We enjoyed a 4th of July here with excellent food and service. Loved the Scottish eggs, fish & chips, and bangers & mash. It was a true Irish pub as there was Guinness on tap and it was poured the right way! Loved it.

Google
Portions are on the smaller side compared to photos from a year or two ago. Fish was outstanding and we’ve been to the UK several times. Mash was a bit tasteless and the bangers had no gravy of their own. Doughnut was tasty. Patio and outdoor seating lovely. Service was great.

Chloe Salvatore

Google
Great sandwiches, the fries were delicious. The fish sandwich was a hefty size for the price which was much appreciated. All around a great experience and sitting outside was nice. We will be back again!

Google
They staple money to the walls; which I thought was a fun / odd quirk. I like finding places with odd quirks as that seems to add character. The cider was good, but kind of sweet. Whereas the shepherd's pie was pretty good. I'd recommend this place and would be happy to go back.

Google
They had a big run on some of their standards so I missed being able to try the Reuben, their braised pork shank, and their corned beef and cabbage, but I did have a wonderful fish and chips and a Smithwicks and it was a great experience. I’ll definitely be going back. Thank you Lily

Google
Great place, but unfortunately, they only had a limited "late nite menu" at 8 pm. So I had Irish stew and Scottish eggs. Oh, and a Black & Tan. Food was just OK, lacking flavor and salt. "Rustic bread" was just a simple biscuit, not what I expected. They did "Top Off" my beer, so it's all good. Will have to return some other time

Google
Great friendly, service, and good food portions. Everything was tasty and delicious. Buttermilk pasties, Irish meatloaf, bangers appetizer, and Guinness dark chocolate cake with cream frosting.

Yelp
My boyfriend is Irish, so we always have to pop into the local pub. What a cool place! Much bigger inside than expected and walked in to Irish music playing,as it should be. Really fun authentic feel. The food was really delicious too. I got the meatloaf which was tasty and filling and my bf got the Shepherds Pie, which was yummy and filling as well! Lily was a delight as our bartender. Thanks for the nice time! We'll be back!

Yelp
The food was amazing and it came quickly. I love the money and posters on the walls. The waiters and waitresses were also very nice.

Yelp
Service here was phenomenal. It was half St. Patty's Day and there was quite the crowd, so we sat at the bar. Amazing service from all the staff. The bartender was busy but we never lacked for anything. Lots of great irish beer on tap, and a good selection of spirits. Food was great! Our party had the steak, rueben, meatloaf and fish & chips. Steak was cooked perfectly as ordered. Fish and chips were crispy and tender. Seasoning on the fries was a hit. We were privileged to enjoy the live bagpipes as well. Definitely recommend this casual and fun spot.

Yelp
Had a late lunch here so it wa quite. Friendly service. The food was good and prices were reasonable.

Yelp
My bad for ordering the salmon sandwich. When I asked the waitress how it was, she said "I don't know". There was my sign. But I was in Washington! That is typically what I am going for whenever in Washington. This was my first time in Spokane, but O'Doherty's had come recommended. It was also within walking distance of my hotel, and it looked like a good option. They had the salmon sandwich and another entree, so I figured it was a decent opotion. The waitress said she only ever eats the Shepherds pie or the stew. Traditional pub fare, maybe stick with those. There were no pictures of the salmon sandwich on either google or yelp either. There was my second sign. Well, there is one now. The fries were thick steak cut fries, and tasty. The salmon sandwich was BLAND. SO bland. The fish had never encountered any seasoning. It wasn't over cooked, but completely unseasoned and came with lettuce, an underripe winter tomato, and a dollop of honey mustard salad dressing, on a bun. The salad dressing was between the bun and the lettuce, so completely absorbed into the bread and did absolutely NOTHING for the sandwich. Completely forgettable. The prices were good and the atmosphere was lively, just don't order the salmon.

Yelp
This place was great. Bar area plus a place for people with kids to sit. The owner manager called everyone's attention to sing happy birthday to a little girl. It was pretty cool. One of the regulars we were sitting by said it is a normal occurrence. Food was wonderful. Stew was thick and comforting. Steamers were buttery and perfectly cooked. And the Rueben egg rolls were the best I've ever had!! Seriously hands down 12/10! Must get.

Yelp
Lunch after walking through a lilac parade street event. Took about four minutes for seating due to the large crowds. Nice table near the bar with a great view of the thousand or so dollar bills hanging on the walls and ceiling. Seems you can put one there if you get on the bar and sing a song. Very entertaining while you wait for your food. I ordered the Guiness battered fish and chips. I've eaten fish and chips from a small shop on the shore of the North Sea to dozens around the world and I have to say, this was my favorite. You may ask why so here it is; the fish was large and fried to a delicate crispiness with a very tasty batter encapsulating the Alaskan pollock underneath. Seasoned perfectly, it was stunning. Secondly, the tarter sauce was hands down the best I've ever eaten. Extra creamy and smooth yet didn't rely on onions, pickles, and such to boost the flavor. I used a chip to get the last drop out of the serving dish and would have bought a gallon of it if they sold it that way. The chips (or fries) were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, perfect accompaniment to the fish. Completing the plate was a vinegar-based coleslaw that I thought I could detect a hint of malt in it. The sharp bite after the chips was the best. To make this meal one I will never forget, the server was excellent. Fast, friendly and personable, she had everyone at the table singing her praises and adding to the tip. You can not miss this place. NOTE: The picture was not my plate, I ate 90% of mine before I realized I had not taken a photo so I asked a couple senior ladies next to us if I could photograph their plate when they received it. I had to explain Yelp but they laughed and agreed so they get the photo credit.

Yelp
Disappointment after disappointment. Nothing was as good as it could have been. The McGinnity fries were pretty good, but they suffered from the same problem as most things with melted cheese in that the cheese congealed before I got it and thus became annoying. The shepherds pie was not up to par and relatively flavorless. Honestly pretty bad. The only thing that really saved the meal was the bread pudding and even that wasn't enough to change my mind.

Yelp
We went for drinks only. The service was fast. The bartender was really nice. He gave us a free round of golf at the flatstick pub (he had a card he's been carrying in his wallet forever) when we mentioned we were going there for dinner.

Yelp
It's a perfect Irish pub! The servers to the owner are fantastic. The cocktails are fun. The atmosphere matches!

Yelp
O'Doherty's in Spokane is a fun Irish pub, located close to the downtown restaurants, and right across from the Riverfront Park - which is worth a visit in itself. The Guinness Fish and Chips was excellent. In particular, the chips (aka, French fries) were exceptionally good. The Irish stew was hearty and tasty. The onion rings were nothing special, nor was the bread that came with the stew. Being that Spokane is sort of in apple country, I tried the apple crisp for dessert. It was very good, but on my next visit I will probably try the bread pudding. The service was friendly and professional. Overall, O'Doherty's is a great place to go when you are visiting Spokane.

Yelp
Was in Spokane on a work trip and happened to overnight there Decided to try this place and oh boy so glad we tried it Starting with the service our waitress Chloe was fantastic! From being so friendly and helpful to giving us tips about places downtown. The beers on tap we tried were local and so good and refreshing. The FOOD WAS DELICIOUS!!! They also have outdoor seating and a nice little patio that faces the river front. The whole time we were there was very enjoyable definitely will go back there next time in town. Chloe THANK YOU for such a memorable experience we had a wonderful time while there :) You are an example of what GOOD customer service is all about! Your biz gained two loyal customers.

Yelp
This place is truly a Spokane icon! The food was all terrific and the portions are good sized. Come hungry! The corned beef and cabbage was amazing. Service was impeccable. I recommend the white stout beer. Cool atmosphere, friendly staff and management, and a load of good times will always be the standard at O'Doherty's! I'll be back

Yelp
Came for dinner, left with a smile. In search of a happy hour and good atmosphere, we found this pub in the heart of downtown close to the river front. Although the outdoor patio looked inviting, we were more impressed with the interior vibe. The walls were covered with dollar bills, each signed by customers. My daughter was hooked, and it wasn't long before she went through the rite of passage to add her own note. The food was great, our drinks were cold, and all during happy hour to boot, so good prices. This was a fantastic night to remember.

Yelp
Quintessential Irish Pub. Bartenders were all gems. Corned beef and cabbage was solid. Short walk across the river to the basketball game after. Would highly recommend if you're in the area.

Yelp
Best Irish bar in Spokane. Great atmosphere, and they know how to pour Guinness. Foods not that bad either. Try the shepherds pie.

Yelp
Delicious food and a really fun atmosphere. I love that you can put a dollar on the wall and that they donate the money that's collected as they run out of room. I also love how friendly everyone is, it really is a place where the locals go and you feel like you belong. Plus, oh my GOD the FRIES are TO DIE FOR. My favorite memory was going there on a date, and, while we were hanging out, an announcement was made that someone was going to stand on the bar and sing a song. I can't remember what you get when you do this, but it's an O'Doherty's tradition. I was expecting some random adult who was a touch sloshed to hop up on the bar, but it was a little girl! She was about 9 or 10 years old, and she was dressed in a full Elsa costume. She sang "let it go" and the whole pub joined in. Things didn't work out with the person I was on a date with (I felt more of a friend vibe and they were not on board with that lol) but, even so, that is hands down my favorite memory from grabbing dinner at a local dive bar.
google avatar

Gregory G B.

Yelp
We went to visit Spokane Falls while they were high and, after drying off, decided to drop into O'Doherty's for a pint. We sat at the bar and immediately became involved with the bantering regulars. I decided to join the "Family" and mounted the bar to sing a lusty verse of "Hal and Tow". We ordered pints and onion rings, which were perfect! We decided to stay for an early dinner. I ordered the bangers and mash. It was the best I've ever eaten in 67 years! It was served Irish style with cabbage instead of mushy peas. The banger, potatoes and cabbage went down with relish! You can't beat prompt and friendly service with delicious food.

Yelp
Night out for my wife and I, and while wondering downtown decided to step into O'Dohertys. Great choice. The greeter (also waiting tables) was excellent, which usually isn't something that is noticeable. He was very welcoming and just friendly. Thanks Jeff. We were seated fairly quick and drinks were brought promptly. We ordered a salad and fish and chips. The apple almond salad was outstanding, with gloriously large chunks of high quality blue cheese to give it a nice punch. The battered fish was also awesome, something they have clearly been doing well for some time. Shared bread pudding finished things off and it was so, so good. What a great experience. Definitely going to have to make this a stop more often.

Wendy H.

Yelp
Food was mediocre. Service was slow. Had our well behaved dogs on the "dog friendly " patio. Another customer kept giving us dirty looks for being there. Someone walked past with a dog and our dogs gave a bark. They asked us to leave while we were still waiting for our bill.

Yelp
I have to say it was one of my most enjoyable lunches in awhile. Came here after walking around the river front for some lunch and between the food and service it was just fun. You walk in and it's a seat yourself so it was maybe a few minutes before a server came over. She brought waters and menus and let us some time to peruse. I got the Irish stew, my parents got the burger and the Ruben. The food didn't take too long and came out hot and fresh. The fires were seasoned, hot and, crispy. My stew was hearty but also light. It had a lot of veggies and the broth was nice and light. My mom loved her Ruben. Not my taste but she thought it was one of the better ones in Spokane. The burger is what you would expect. Good meat and topped with the normal veggies. What really made the experience was when my mom wanted to put a dollar on the wall. In order to do so you have to get on the bar and sing and dance. Before she did so, I am guessing the owner came up and make it an event. Which was perfect because both her and my dad were celebrating their birthday. He made a speech and she sang and the whole restaurant was singing with her. It was just fun. It is just a cool place to grab food or drinks and you walk away feeling happy. Definitely will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Just a quick fish-and-chips lunch. Turned to be one of the better fish and-chips in recent memory. Hope to make it back for more
google avatar

Vicki H.

Yelp
In Spokane we have the luck o' the Irish. O'Doherty's is precious and true ! So come and tip a Guinness while you are awash in the welcome. Hooligan and Hannigan, fish and chips? Get both! Take a seat and stay awhile. "Get nailed" standing tall on the bar as you sing a tune or tell a riddle, a proverb, a wee legend, a rhyme, or tell a tale or two. It will cost you a dollar and you will be immortalized at O'Doherty's!

Amanda C.

Yelp
Good food and service, we sat on the patio and it was nice. Loud cars going by, like street racing with big mufflers (or no muffler, couldn't tell) but that's not the fault of the business. I'd definitely go back and hope for a little less street noise next time.
google avatar

Marilyn C.

Yelp
We stopped in on a Sunday night. We enjoyed the live music, great service, good food and drink. Definitely a do again.
google avatar

Bruce M.

Yelp
Anytime you step into an establishment, and are greeted by the owner, then served by his brother who both have been there 35+ years, it's an A+++ The Ruben is amazing, the Irish eggs with mustard are 100% authentic and my wife's steak salad was perfect. Recommended a million times over.

Yelp
We went here for Restaurant Week, February 2019. We had a great time. Parking can be tricky if there is a ton of snow around as there are few street parking spaces and the parking lots are well used. The decor really does elicit a street grunge feel with Irish undertones. If you switched the dollars for euros you could imagine you're actually in a pub in Dublin. There are just fewer people drinking pints of Guinness. My meal consisted of Irish stew, fish and chips, and apple crisp. Each course was excellent. Most notably, the fish was wonderful, moist, tender, and very filling. And the chips, when smothered in vinegar, were delicious. The wait staff were busy yet we did not feel neglected at any time. We were there on a Saturday evening at about 5:30 and the place was packed. A very pleasant experience. Worth repeated visits.

Yelp
Review: Restaurant Week Menu 2019 It's Saturday night and the last night of Restaurant Week, so whatya gonna do? Run to the next restaurant on your list. For me, it was this pub. They have Guinness on draft, but I refrained because I'd done my research and had the Irish Coffee pegged as my third course (beer and whiskey doesn't mix well in my stomach). Luckily, the waitress was on her game and asked if I'd like my "dessert" to come early. Absolutely. Bring it on. First course: Irish stew with two huge chunks of bread. Filled with veggies and flavor, this stew was an excellent starter. Next course: fish n chips. I believe my plate included the whole fish. If you're familiar with the size of cod, then you know how much fish was on my plate. Chips were thick and just the right amount of salt. There was a small little plastic cup of coleslaw (tasty). The fish was excellent. Bring your appetite. My last course: the Irish coffee was savored throughout the meal, which worked out perfectly for me. Interior is fun. You can participant in decorating their interior by bringing a US dollar and placing your own "design" on it before sticking it on the wall or ceiling. Parking is not fun (paid at the lot next door)--easily done but added cost. Pro tip: the waitstaff doesn't seat you. You have to be aggressive! When you see someone leaving, RUN, grab the table. The waitstaff will clear the previous parties' mess later. I'll be back to experience their Guinness on draft and other entrees when parking is free. Hope I can find street parking on a Sunday.

Yelp
We came here for a break from the park and it was just the right place for a refreshing drink and food and we had the best waiter there~ Jeff. Thanks Buddy for the great service!!

Yelp
Had fun visiting this place last night as part of my nephews 21st b-day celebration. The bartenders were great and took care of us very well. One of our party danced on the table and got to put the dollar bill on the wall. Try the mozzarella sticks.

Dali P.

Yelp
We showed up and it was packed. Two people who came in before us were able to get a seat and one of the servers told us to wait for an open table. Then another came and told us we wouldn't be able to be seen there at 6:30 on a Friday night. Told us to leave. Worst establishment I've been to in the Spokane area.
google avatar

Heidi Jo L.

Yelp
We had the battered fish and a Ruben. They were both good. The service was very friendly. The place has a great atmosphere, with lots to look at. We will return for sure.

Harry M.

Yelp
The quintessential Irish pub! Family owned and operated. If you didn't have freckles when you went in...you will surely have them AND a thick Irish accent when you leave! The food is authentic, filling, reasonably priced, and delivered with a smile. Drinks are good and the bar has everything you need for a Sunday brunch or a wild Friday night. You'll find this gem right downtown Spokane near all the attractions and hotels. Don't skip this as a stop the next time you're downtown Spokane! And remember to leave stick a dollar on the wall for charity!

M S.

Yelp
The food is super good! Loved the Irish Nachos. Our server was amazing. She came by multiple times to make sure we did not need refills or anything else. The beer is cold and the prices are good. It's very pretty cool inside. They have tables and booths as well as the bar to sit at.
google avatar

Hannah H.

Yelp
The number one place for casual business meetings and brainstorming sessions in downtown Spokane! Our group received careful and excellent table service when tucking in at one of their many booths. The server was kind and prompt with our beers and our food arrived quickly. Those ONION RINGS are to die for! So CRISPY, not soggy. The perfect treat for any discerning PUB FOOD enthusiast. Pints of Harp fueled our brainstorming session and we walked away with some new material for our ::in development:: mobile application, *Pckr™ (a safe, adult verified, completely anonymous, derriere picture sharing app and incognito social media platform. Check for us in 2023!!). In the lull of conversation Irish Trad music trickled 'pon our ears. Flute and whistle, backed by the hypnotic Bhoudrán drum, kept the mood going for all of our great ideas. Fresh thoughts on our application were ceaseless in such an atmosphere. Some of our nearby drinkers even let us interview them, checking off our to-do list with a little bit of research and development. Just a heads up: I do believe, as we checked against several other Saint Patrick's Day countdown clocks on the world wild web, that their countdown clock, high above the bar, may be off by several hours and seconds. But, generally, this is okay and a good example of the wacky, at home vibration the dollar bill studded walls emanate at a place like O'D's. And how cool is that, the walls are covered in bills from times past over many decades?! All of the bills are signed by the person who put it there at the time. This is a legacy house! One of the dollar bills on the property is even signed by the band Sublime! (Please note: Defacement of currency is a violation of the Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code.) The thousands of bills, and the important, historical notes written on them, provide a nuance not to be found anywhere else in the City of Spokane. A lovely place, indeed. (Want to know how to get your own dollar bill on the wall or ceiling? Dangit, go on in, order a pint of your favorite, and find out for yourself!) Bathrooms are clean, easy to access, and good to go for a one or a two, so I'd give O'D's W.C. a rating of five out of five. Uair is uari, tillidh sinn. Slàinte!

Jake G.

Yelp
Love this place. Super nice staff and great Irish food. Great interior and great drinks. I also love the location!

Yelp
I have tried Rubin sandwiches all around the world. I travel non stop and usually don't take the time to write a review - but this place has the best corned beef and Rubin sandwich I've had anywhere in the world ... including Ireland. They slow cook their corned beef overnight and it is 'to die for'. Seriously, if you find yourself anywhere near Spokane - you do NOT want to miss this place. Steak fries were huge, just the way I like them AND - a FULL bottle of ketchup - I hate when they give me a mostly empty bottle or worse, packets! This place got it ALL right! Don't pass it up!!! 5 stars for flavor and service.
google avatar

Tom T.

Yelp
Stopped in Oct 1, had a nice lunch with friends . . . and I swear the fish is getting larger. And, yes, that is one mighty chunk of fish on a big plate!
google avatar

Anna R.

Yelp
Clam chowder was wonderful - great seasons, hot, and lots of clams. Fish & chips were not greasy but flaky and crispy, the cabbage and corned beef melted in my mouth - tender and fresh.

Yelp
So my wife and I had an ambiguous experience at O'Dohertys. First the good: The wait staff was very nice and friendly and attentive. The food was excellent. Now the bad: We were seated out in the front patio with several other diners. While waiting for our food, a patron who had been sitting at a table alone near us, went back inside, then came out again and went on a rather loud rant regarding politics (clearly pro Democrat / anti Republican) and then started shouting F*** You at a young couple (the guy at the table was Asian and the woman was African American). He told them he owned the Restaurant and that they should get out followed by a racist insult directed at the young woman with a few more F bombs directed at them presumably. Then he left. When the waitress came back out just seconds later, I asked if that guy was the owner. She said no. (If he had been we would have left.) She asked what happened. We all told her. She left, then came back and told us that that customer was no longer welcome here. I asked to pay for the couple who received the brunt of his racist tirade. When we left my wife and I were shocked to see the guy still sitting at the bar inside drinking! 2 Things: (1) The management should have trespassed that guy immediately and, (2) They should have comped the couple's meal. I could see the young woman was stunned by what had just happened. She did not finish her drink, I didn't see her eat anything else, and she never uttered another word to her companion. No one should ever have to experience that kind of thing and as far as I could tell the restaurant, didn't take any meaningful action in response. We do not live in Spokane, but if we did, we would never come back to this restaurant again. Management you need to do better to protect your customers.

Leisa W.

Yelp
Fish and chips were great. Atmosphere was horrible. Had a terrible experience while dining. Man came out swearing and racist comments and insulting people that were dining. Waitress said he wasn't welcomed there anymore after my husband and others told her what had happened. He was still in the bar when we left. We picked up the tap for the Asian and African American that was so harassed. The establishment should of comped it all. Never will we go back.
google avatar

Keely S.

Yelp
The food is great, the drinks are great and the service is great and the bar is open again. Yay!
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
As such things go, it doesn't get better. Fish and chips include a Gorgo level monstrosity of a slab-o-fish breaded and fried so deliciously that if you're visiting Spokane from out of town and don't like Irish food or fish and chips, you will want to move to an apartment upstairs from O'Doherty's in order to be close to that moment of heaven. I *may* be exaggerating a bit, but probably only by the 12.5 percent of me that's Irish. ;-)
google avatar

Jil S.

Yelp
Had a nice meal here. We sat outside. Only complaint is food wasn't as hot as I would have liked it. Our waiter was very friendly and service was excellent. The fried fish was good but we live in the OR Coast so we're super picky. Of course we've had a bit better but that doesn't make it bad. Just not exactly like fresh caught that morning. Scotch eggs were good, salads were good. Overall it was a nice place to eat at. We ate outside and the weather was perfect. Fun little store around the corner if you have have any extra time.

Yelp
Amazing staff and service! Just like being back in Ireland. So glad we found this place on our travels here and would recommend everyone give it a visit. Chicken tender, steak fries, beef stew all delicious ! Irish coffee on point

Keith H.

Yelp
Been coming here for years. Hoopfest weekend. Ridiculously rude hostess on Hoopfest weekend. Will never be back.

Yelp
Big meal, great service with a wide variety of beer. Local joint with an Irish feel, ambiance.

Yelp
The first time here I was on my own while wifey at work. The menu said their fish and chips was most popular, so I tried it. The fries were well seasoned and the HUGE piece of fish was the best that I've had aside from Gordon Ramsey's fish & chip place in Vegas. Today, right now as I type this, sitting here with wifey, the fish & chips was a disappointment. They were not the normal fries but the thick Red Robin steak size fries, and the fish literally shrunk inside the batter. Plus it leaked the grease it was deep fried in. The flavor wasn't the same either. Tarter sauce wasn't tart. Too much mayo. And with so much grease coming out it soaked some of the fries they laid it on. The first time here it wasn't greasy at all. The fillet was full of fish and crisp, and the fries were perfectly seasoned. The service was quick and attentive. Service this time, not so much. It wasn't busy at all. The gal behind the bar and older gentleman seemed to split the duties on the dining floor. But they didn't communicate well as far as customers went, but communicated well between one another and a couple people at the bar cracking jokes. Though we were not in a huge hurry, but when a few minutes turns into 10+ minutes just to come back for a drink order...and when the one time he came by to check on us, after my wife said her meal was fine and I began to say, "well..." to let him know the fish wasn't as good as the first time and why...he didn't hear me and walked on. I'm sure it was a fluke and an off day with the chef or something, but it still a disappointment nonetheless. I (we) will do again, but I'll try something else next time and hope the service is a little more attentive.
