The Best Irish Bars for St. Patrick’s Day in the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"O’Donovan’s is a unique Irish bar in the Twin Cities scene: the pub was originally built in Ireland, and shipped piece by piece to Minneapolis, along with its entire decor. Potato features prominently on the menu: try the Maccafferty’s potato soup, the Shannon gold chips, or the potato pancakes, which are called boxty. Draft beer selections include Guinness, Harp, Smithwicks, and Magner’s Irish cider, plus favorites like Deschutes and Summit. Even better: O’Donovan’s hosts live folk music on most nights." - Eater Staff

We popped in for a late night cocktail and beer on the patio while listening to a great Scottish musician. Such fun. The service was really good especially since it was pretty bustling. There was a Timberwolves game happening next door. I’ll go back and check out the food. The atmosphere was fun and energetic.

Google
I had a bourbon lemonade, rueben wontons, and a caesar salad. I tried ordering the wheels whelans cheese plate since it was on the menu, but I was told they don't serve it anymore which was disappointing. The "wontons" were actually egg rolls, which was confusing, but they tasted good and the dipping sauce that came with it was delicious. The drink was very weak though. Great service from Kyle. They have a large outdoor seating area as well as large indoor seating options.

Dalene Sorenson

Google
They were out of a few signature food items. Drinks are mixed weak, almost to the point it's unsure if any alcohol was added. Good Chicken strips, friendly staff. Unfortunately Pepsi instead of Coke. Great location !

Google
Stopped in after the baseball game and the place was packed- inside and out! We found a table and figured we'd be waiting a while but were pleasantly surprised to be waited on promptly and fed some AWESOME food!! Just heard about this place the last day of our 4 day stay. Two minute walk from our hotel. Wish we knew of it sooner!! Definitely recommend!! FIVE STARS ALL DAY!!

Google
Because it's walking distance from Target Field, we stopped in after the baseball game. Food was good. Drinks were cold. Service was excellent.

Ruben won tons, corned beef poutine, chicken curry and chips. ALL SO GOOD! My Irish wife says "tastes just like home".

Very authentic Irish Pub. Good music, great atmosphere. Fantastic location.

Google
Real deal Irish Pub. Just stopped in yesterday afternoon and had a pint while waiting for our hotel room at the Lofton to be ready. Bartender was extremely personable and very knowledgeable about football which was fun. Very nice place with great atmosphere.

Yelp
My husband and I came here for the Wizards & Wands mixology event. It was a fun event to interact with other Potterhead. They decorated the place to fit the Harry Potter theme. The staff was professional. FOOD: The food was good. For the event, they have appetizers available for purchase. We had the Buffalo wings and fries. I like that the Buffalo sauce wasn't too spicy. It was just right. After the event, we went to the bar to try their Shepard's Pie and Corned Beef Sandwich. Both dishes were delicious and flavorful.

Yelp
We stopped by here after a Timberwolves game for a couple of drinks on a Saturday night. It was relatively empty when we entered, but the place soon filled up after people left the game. We had a few beers and the service was attentive and speedy. this place does have a patio, but unfortunately it is winter so we were not able to take advantage. The drink prices are very fair for a downtown bar. The atmosphere was a little bit rowdy, however. Nothing crazy, but definitely some louder tables, so know that that may be the case after sporting events, as would likely be the case at any surrounding bars.

Yelp
This was a very fun stop on a recent trip to Minneapolis. I truly enjoyed the vibe and delicious orange mule drinks. The atmosphere is peaceful and charming. Our server was attentive and upbeat.

Yelp
Honestly, I was a little nervous stopping in before heading to the target center for the gold over America tour cause of the reviews but I was pleasantly surprised. It was extremely busy because of the twins game and the tour at the target center. We got a table right away on the patio but it did take a little while for a server to come to our table which I totally understand with how busy it was. Our food came out 5-10 minutes after we ordered which was awesome and surprising with how busy it was. The food was awesome. It was probably one of the best Ruebens I have had in a long time. High recommend checking it out but just be patient on game days cause the staff doing a great job.

Yelp
REVIEW IS FOR TINSELTOWN POPUP 2023 I was extremely disappointed and frustrated with the TinselTown Popup. I'm not sure if the company putting on the Popup is to blame for not training the pub staff well, or if the pub was cutting corners, feel free to decide yourself - but overall based on my experience I would say to save your $20 and go to a different Popup in Minneapolis, since there are many more worth your money. Online you have to reserve your time in advance and purchase a ticket - with fees it was just shy of $20. We were fine with the fee since it included a free drink, making it more like $10 for a drink and $10 for admission in our mind. As reserved the 5pm slot, which was the first one for the night. When we arrived they had the curtain closed since we were 5 minutes early - the issue is the pub isn't really big enough to be closing it off so it got crowded inside fast with no method to stand in line to get in. Once the curtains opened a festive employee gave us the worlds smallest scraps of paper and said they were our "drink tickets" (picture) - this was really odd since it was obvious the employee did this about 5 minutes ago. It was a madhouse to get in but luckily we were second in line where they checked out IDs and didn't even check our tickets. We walked into a beautifully decorated room that would no way hold the amount of people they booked. There wasn't even seating for more than two groups of 4, and we saw quite a few groups of 6 in line. The 4 of us in my group were able to grab 4 stools at the bar, and the group of 4 in front of us grabbed the other large area. As people filed in it was unbearable how crowded it was. I literally had people standing and breathing down my neck since there was no room and they had to just stand. There was no way for anyone to get to the bar and get drinks unless they were sitting there like us. The worst part is the drink experience. We got to the bar and asked for the holiday menu - bombshell dropped that THERE ISNT ONE! At a holiday bar? That's the whole point of going. We were off to a rough start. Instead the bartender rattled off what we could get as a free drink - chocolate martini, Baileys and coffee or an Irish coffee. There was no indication on the website that your free drink had to come from a set list, another disappointment. I ordered a chocolate martini with 2 of my friends, my boyfriend got the Irish coffee. Our drinks came half full and I overheard the bartenders SAYING to make them half's. Not to mention not even in festive glassware or a candy cane hanging from the edge. the chocolate martini was fine, my boyfriend's Irish coffee was UNDRINKABLE - watered down coffee with cheap whisky. At this point we're upset, and we can tell a lot of others are too. Once everyone finally got filed in an actress came on and started giving a holiday spiel about playing games together, etc. We were pretty over the experience at this point. After this we were absolutely done, our money had been wasted and we weren't about to spend more on just regular/non holiday drinks. I could tell the staff was surprised to see us go before our allotted time was up but we couldn't take it. Saw a note on an influencer post today that they might be making more space for the Popup and tweaking some things - I hope they do because I wish I could get my $20 back.

Yelp
Here tonight before a Timberwolves game. Our waiter was on it!! And the fish and chips were fantastic. Great beginning to our night!

Yelp
We loved our friendly bartender , Amir ! The conversation was great and he really went above and beyond with awesome talk about sports . Thank you for the warm vibes and phenomenal experience

Kate S.

Yelp
Myself and boyfriend came here for a Wizards and Wands event, the event was oversold and I only bought one ticket(my mistake).. I was truly amazed by the great customer service. Because the event was oversold, the staff ended up buying my boyfriend and I's meal while we waited for the next event to start an hour and a half later. The food was great. Our service was amazing while we waited. She was nice enough to put our food in a fridge for us while we were in the event. I'll be coming back to this restaurant simply because of how well my boyfriend and I were treated.

Yelp
Stopped by after Twins game. Staff looked like they had a hard day. Most tables needed bussed. Almost needed to serve ourselves. Food was good but service lacking.
google avatar

Shaquack T.

Yelp
The potato soup was ice cold. So let's start with I'm in hospitality, I never want and even told the waitress we didn't want anything removed from our check we just wanted them to know the food was cold. The owner told her that he's not removing the soup and if she wants she can eat that part of the check. The owner is a joke never in my 40 years of being in the business would I say that. I tipped the waitress 20% and said tell the owner to check Yelp. Stay away from this dump. waitress A+ the Owner is an F complete jerk and just lost business.

Yelp
Surprisingly empty and quiet on a Friday evening. Unless there is a sports or music event it pretty much stays that was. Since it was a proper Irish pin I sure did have a tasty Magnum Cidre. Large fresh crisp just the right temperature. Craving a salad the bar tender suggested the Fraser salad since it was large. The salad part was delicious. The chicken eh. I actually didn't mind that it was quiet bc I wasn't in a very talkative mood. Just some refreshment.

Yelp
Perfectly fine Irish Pub. I only sat outside but the interior looked cool. Got the corned beef poutine.

Yelp
Good size, nice music, TINY menu. This appears to be a great place to grab a drink before a game downtown Minneapolis, however it seemed to be not as busy as we thought it would be and I think we figured out why, nice selection of beer and drinks but the menu was TINY. Not a lot of options unless you like the traditional Irish meal. Service was great and friendly but just not impressed with my food options. Also it looks like the place needs more help as they were open for the tournament but their normal hours appear slim and they must not advertise well, i would have expected the place to be crawling with fans before the games, but it wasn't when we were there, and the Friday night crowd after the game was very small as well.

Anthony M.

Yelp
Yeah lets not delete reviews because they show what really goes down. Went to the bar was served last when arriving before people. The miserable old bald bartender proceeded to not card the people next to us, a guy maybe late 20's and his date who looked barely older than 18. Asks us for our ID and gets dumbfounded because i asked why he didnt card them. Its a bar, you talk. can't answer a simple question what are you doing behind the counter? Terrible service overall. Not worth even if its in a convenient spot
google avatar

Yelp
This place has a perfect Irish Pub vibe, great decor. Bartender was surly but he puts a nice half & half. Our waitress was very friendly and service was efficient. We had fish and chips - definitely reccommend it!

Mike C.

Yelp
Stopped by on our walk to Twins game. Fun out door setting. Beer was good as was the food. Good service too.

Yelp
I've eaten here a couple of times now before sports games in Minneapolis. I think it's a great place to meet friends and have a cocktail. It's typically loud with lots of energy. The couple times I've come here it's been to eat and that is why there is a lower rating. I just don't think their food is very good. My most recent visit I had the fish and chips and they were just ok. I thought fish and chips at a pub would be 'the' meal to get and it just wasn't that good. It was two smaller pieces of fish. Tons of fries. The menu is limited now with the pandemic so not a lot of options and something like a pot pie is $18. The rest of the meals in our group were so so as well. If I want to grab a Guinness with friends, I'll be back. To eat, not so much.
google avatar

Tony M.

Yelp
No issues. I like the place. Price were about what we expected. Will we be back... possibly. Wanted to sitbat the bar but they were both full.

David K.

Yelp
The Food could improve. The fish was cold and tasted as though they fried it in old oil. Everyone in our family had severe abdominal cramps after dinner.

Yelp
I hears good things about this place but unfortunately when my friends and I (about 6 of us) went to celebrate our friend moving away it wasn't so stellar:( Our server Kyle F got our orders wrong and even charged me extra for food and drinks I never ordered and when I placed a $20 on the table and asked for a Chocolate Martini he gave me a tiny shot glass with (Pepsi? I think) in it and said it was a specialty and he pocketed my whole $20. The atmosphere was nice and my friends also have recipes that are overcharged and will be calling to solve this as Server Kyle said he couldn't give us change because they were closing at midnight tonight but could still print the reciepts. We will be calling to fix this ASAP Just for record, I ordered 1 OD's chicken tenders and 2 total recieved Chocolate Martinis and was charged for a total of 5 and other foods from others at the table who had left already.

Andrew C.

Yelp
Bartender was rude, served me a beer with a fly in it and acted exasperated when I asked for a new one. The new beer was served to me in a dirty glass with food particles stuck to the inside. I was too disgusted to drink it and just left. Location is convenient if you're going to a game though.

Beth S.

Yelp
Great bar and restaurant. Service was very good. Especially liked the outdoor patio.

Jeff K.

Yelp
Food upset our stomachs. Drinks were ok. Service was good. Location and outdoor dining is the best feature.

Margaret S.

Yelp
Do not waste your time or your money coming here. The service was terrible. It took at least 15 minutes to get menus, 20 minutes after receiving the menus we finally received our water. We ordered wontons only to find out later they were out but they still left the wontons on our bill. The mixed drinks we ordered from the bar were not drinkable. They were unwilling to sub another drink in its place or refund it. Our server was invisible and not willing to assist us. I have never written a negative review before but I wish I had been warned about O' Donovan's before we decided to come here.
google avatar

Dave K.

Yelp
Great late night spot for a drink and bite. The kitchen is open late and the Corned Beef is legit! I've never come before 10 pm so don't know what the scene is like normally. But if it's after 10 pm and your hungry or need a drink this is a great spot. I've had the corned beef sandwich and the corned beef and cabbage. Both rock. Great bartenders - great bar to watch the game.
google avatar

Scott C.

Yelp
Amazing menu and vast selection of adult beverages. Having been to New Zealand and UK many times, I was looking forward to the fish and chips. Sadly, it did not have the nice golden brown crunch to it. It was still very good, however. A large piece of fish as opposed to two pieces as shown on the photos on Yelp. Note the extensive liquor list on their website with the prices. What is not on their menu is the price of ice. When I ordered my Scotch, the waiter asked me neat or on a rock, I had said on a rock. When I got my bill I was charged $2. for ice!

Evelyn M.

Yelp
Came for a drink stayed for Tony!! He is amazing! Recommend curry and fries at first I was like what? Sounds insane but turned out to be great. Definitely part of my memorable experience in Minneapolis.
google avatar

Pieter N.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and just simple great Irish food. Loved it we thinking back in Ireland we are . Definitely I have to take some friends out to have just amazing simple great food. Keep up the great Service. And we very glad we came early.

Ryan B.

Yelp
Awesome owner! Open the doors for us on a cold winter night after they had already closed shop and gave us a free beer. Really appreciated the service and will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
O'Donovans accommodated our party of 30 on a busy Saturday night in February. The service was phenomenal and so was the food. Check it out! We'll be back!
google avatar

Samantha B.

Yelp
Good atmosphere and nice location. Potato soup was really good, lots of meat. Chicken pot pie was decent, but too liquid and too much onion in my opinion. Good spot for drinks.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Great spot for a night cap and bite after a show- get there before the kitchen closes at 11!
google avatar

Riki C.

Yelp
The bartender here is why I give 5 stars! Ben kicked butt at making me and my friend experience a night in Minneapolis! I was getting ready for prince tribute and Ben made me have a happy time! We went in just to grab a snack and got the wings, which were actually really good, even though I had doubts because no others were inside! But thru about an hour regulars that Ben knew by name and what they wanted started to come in, every person was so nice, polite, and enjoyable to be around! I wish that place could have Ben and his regulars back down in Texas! It's a bar I'd genuinely enjoy going to! Plus I tried some crazy thick stuff, that was delicious to me

Huacee Y.

Yelp
We were there last night grabbing a few drinks at the bar, ordered the drinks and my husband grabbed a lime and the bartender yelled at him to stop picking and eating customers food when he just reached out to grab a lime. It was very uncalled for and ruined our first time experience at this pub. It will be our first and last poor customer service and didn't even get an apology.
google avatar

Mariah S.

Yelp
Dermot is a wonderful man and the pub is a beautiful establishment. Will definitely be coming back again

Yelp
I'm Asian, and I like Irish Whiskey so I thought to give this place a try since my regular bar, Brother's wasn't open. They were Super Racist, at least the waiter was. We walked in, no one greeted us. We asked the first waiter we saw for a table and he said go seat yourself and someone will be with you, so we did. It didn't look busy. There were still plenty of tables left. We waited about 15 minutes and got no service. We saw 3 groups come after us and each time the waiter greeted them, gave them menus, and took their drink orders right away. I even tried to wave him down as he passed us multiple times because we sat right in his path to the bar. Even the blacks got service here. WTF! F**K this place!!!
google avatar

Alex K.

Yelp
It's fine. More of a 3.5, but rounding down. Hungry before a baseball game, I not-so-willingly was ushered into O'Donovan's. It's a fairly typical pub-near-a-sporting-arena sort of place. The prices are a little higher than they probably should be, and the food is mostly just "solid." The sandwich I got came with a good portion of meat, but there was basically nothing else to it. A stack of meat with a little bit of mustard on toasted and turned-soggy white bread. The fries tasted alright, but they certainly tasted like they were straight out of a freezer bag. Well, not literally, I mean... they were put in the fryer first... you know what I mean. It's not as bad as some other pub-near-a-sporting-arena places I've gone to, but it's just passable -- slightly over-priced, average-at-best food.
google avatar

Linda D.

Yelp
The best chicken pot pie I have ever eaten. Service great, atmosphere loud but fun. Pastry light and fluffy as it should be, chicken juicy and not dry. Gravy was perfect consistency.
google avatar

Kathie A.

Yelp
We stopped in when we were downtown for a Twins game, wanted to have something to eat/drink and be able to continue watching the game as we were not enjoying our seats at Target Field. Initially we came through the front door and sat ourselves at a booth, we realized after waiting for a looong time and not being greeted that we needed to go to the door where the patio entry was, once we sat at the other side of the bar we were able to get drinks and food almost immediately. Not a huge menu, options were okay, split a burger and had some drinks. We enjoyed our visit, but did not feel it was anything special.
google avatar

Tatiana A.

Yelp
We've been coming here for years, as it is a great place to meet friends for relatively inexpensive drinks before heading across the street to First Avenue to pay their super inflated drink prices. The food is also decent. But my favorite part is the bartenders. They are always attentive, kind, and seem to love their jobs. We will continue to give this place our business!
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
Went here before a play at the Orpheum... by default. we entirely planned to go somewhere else, but time became an issue and we had to get downtown, inhale food and get to the theater. O'donovan's seemed like the logical spot as it's close, so it won. Very glad we went as I've walked by it many, many times but never stoppped in. It's always busy on game nights (Timberwolves and Twins), so I usually stay away. But it was a Thursday night in Novemeber and there was almost no one else in there. Which worked for us as I figured we would be able to get served fast. And we did. Super fast. Inside is dark, lots of wood and stained glass. Had exactly the feel you want in an Irish Pub. The kinda place where everybody knows your name:) We were greeted and told to sit wherever we wanted. We chose a table for 3 right smack in front of the fireplace and it was so cozy and warm. Our server was attentive. We all three had burgers and fries and we all thought everything was Awesome! The burger was done medium rare as I asked and tasted like it was right off an outdoor grill. The french fries were super fresh, hot and crispy.... everything you want in a fry (and it rare to find). Server was awesome. Bartender was friendly. We made it to the show in the nick of time with full bellies.... we were happy campers!

Yelp
Visited prior to the Twins game, recently. I was in town for some meetings with a group of co-workers and we were looking for a bite to eat, and found this place. The beer list is pretty standard, with a lot of Irish beers on tap. The food menu is also standard fare for an Irish-themed bar. It was a serviceable visit. We sat outside in the patio area in the late afternoon and early evening on a picture perfect day. I had fish and chips, which was okay. Combined with the beer options, I was satisfied, and ready for the game. The service was very solid as well.
google avatar

Jerry A P.

Yelp
Corned Beef Sandwich and fries was probably the driest sandwich I've even eaten. The fries were also horrible. Ended up leaving most of the food on the plate. I was hoping that the bartender Shawn who have noticed that I didn't like the sandwich and offer me something else but that didn't happen. I wished I would have taken the time to walk two blocks to the brewery down the street but we were in a hurry to grab some food before the game.
google avatar

Don Z.

Yelp
Service started off a little slow. I don't think they were ready for Bison Nation before the game but they got more staff quickly and everything was great.
google avatar

Jacqui B.

Yelp
We enjoyed good pub fare and a pint of Harp, all brought by a smiling waitress and while listening to The Cranberries, U2, and Van Morrison from the overhead speakers......this Irish girl got homesick, but otherwise this was a nice evening Downtown Minneapolis! I had the Chicken Curry over Chips (you can get it over rice, if you prefer) and it came out steaming hot and with the chips done nicely so the curry didn't obliterate their crispness right away. My son ordered the Chicken Pot Pie and Oh-my-goodness, was it STUFFED with chicken and potatoes and veggies....great flaky pastry on top of a large pot pie base. A tip: if you're a light eater, you can easily share one entree with a friend....portions were quite generous!

Yelp
On the recent trip to Minneapolis, we were excited to try the Irish pub's right next to our hotel. About 9:00 pm on Friday, we walked over here during the Twins game and ordered (what else) a Guinness. The place was cool; I like how it opens up the farther you walk in. The bartenders were nice and the right amount of chatty. We ordered the Balsamic Lamb Chop appetizer to split and I ordered a salad (gotta get my veg). Both were good. Since the game was on, there were not a lot of people in the bar, I'm guessing most were at the game. However, we had a feeling it was going to get pretty busy after the game. There were a few others in the bar that looked like they had been there a little too long, if you get what I'm saying. I saw the bartender not-serve two different people and offer them water instead. I think that is responsible bartending and earns O'Donovan's and extra star. Someone has to look out for the drunks when they are too drunk to do it themselves! Keep up the good work, O'Donovan's!!
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
We stopped in after seeing Muse at the Target Center, our group was quite dehydrated after being front and center at this show. Our waitress, Tracy, was very attentive about keeping our water glasses full, and service in general was good and prompt. I got a small fish and chips, the fish was absolutely perfect. Others in the group got salads, sausages and soup, and all seemed happy with their orders. Some could not finish their huge portion of fries, but no worries, our waitress was quick to bring boxes too, and my kid got to finish them off later. She was also able to deal with 6 different forms of payment on the bill quickly and easily! As the driver , I did not drink, saw some beers on tap I would have liked, a little surprised there were not more. We also thought the computer menus were a little gimmicky, but I suppose that's easier to update.
google avatar

Tony U.

Yelp
In Minneapolis, the place to drink and let loose is basically the area around 1st Street North and 5th Avenue North. From there, you can go one of two directions: party at the hormone infested meat market bars, like Brothers, or go to the more mature, laid back bars, like O'Donovan's where you can watch and listen to some great music and carry on a decent conversation. Given the two options, O'Donovan's was my preferred choice. I was there last Friday and really enjoyed a real Irish Folk Band, from Belfast perform. I spoke to the singer, forgot his name but he was very friendly and down to earth. Anyways, it's great to sit outside in front of this place and have a few beers and catch up with old friends. A perfect bar to go to after many hours of being on a plane.

Yelp
11:30pm...just finished working and I can not find a place that is serving food...until I called here. Food available till 1:30am...now we are talking!!! There is a nice $4 Yelp Check-in for a happy hour beer but that doesn't help me at midnight. Beer of the month is Kilkenny...4 buck pints...I think Tarentino named that Beer! It is not bad...has a nice creamy taste to it. I ordered the MacCaffery's Potato soup...I can hardly wait. It says it's rich and creamy with chunks of potato, carrots, ham and bacon! It just arrived let's taste it. It is really amazing. I wish the potatoes were cut a little smaller but the ham, bacon and cream taste out of this world. I wish I could order it as a shake. The only sad part is I ordered a bowl and the bartender gave me a cup. He told me he would get me more and I think I'm going to take him up on that. It is that good! I just asked him and he is bringing me some more. I am very happy now. I also ordered the chicken wings...they are okay. They were very small...not a lot of meat on them. The best part was the Frank's Red Hot Sauce. The blue cheese dressing was also good. (the one rotten celery stick was a little gross) Another cup arrived of the soup...this is so good. Thanks to Tony the bartender for making this happen. (I did want a bowl to start with though). I may want to go into the kitchen and drink the whole pot. Great location. Late night food. And across the street from First Avenue...Prince stopping by now would make the night complete!!!
