Bay Area Restaurants Pivot to Takeout-Only Service as a Coronavirus Mitigation Measure | Eater SF

"I've observed that the mega food truck event organizer Off the Grid has canceled two of its largest weekly food truck rallies at Fort Mason and Lake Merritt and shifted all remaining active markets to takeout-only, instituting increased sanitary practices from staff and third-party vendors and prohibiting in-market dining or seating; Off the Grid currently lists 14 active markets spanning downtown San Francisco out to Alameda and Menlo Park, so this policy affects food truck customers across the Bay." - Luke Tsai

Google
Decent selection of trucks rotating every Wednesday. Location is quite nice as it's next to Menlo Park Caltrain Station.

Google
Nice variety of food 😋 something different to try every time! Esp. love the Indian truck with the cheap Samosas 🇮🇳

Google
Love the diverse selection of food every week. The wait time can be long at some food trucks, but it's a nice casual environment for trying different food. Since it can get crowded, I prefer taking the food to go. Some people may enjoy the live music performance. It is pet and kids friendly.

Google
Great event put on by OtG every Wednesday evening during warmer months. Rotating cast of many Bay Area trucks with 8 or so showing up each week to accommodate all tastes and many cuisines. Local music and revelry. Easily accessible to the train and downtown Menlo Park.

Paul L.

Google
Always a great selection of food trucks. You get a lot of the same food trucks from week to week but they switch it up enough to keep it interesting. Also they have live music if you can hear it over the loud train.

Shivasankari K.

Google
Nice evening hangout with friends and family. Food truck a little pricey but tastes good, several Indian and asian options available. Live music is also played there. Right next to caltrain station .

Small, but no lines and good entertainment.

So happy that off the grid now comes to Menlo Park every Wednesday and I don't have to drive up to SF to find gatherings of food trucks. There are about 5-10 trucks every time and off the grid provides chairs and bathrooms. Seating is not ample and most of the chairs are usually taken. My favorite vendors here are the Chairman (get the pork belly bao!) and the Creme Brûlée truck. If you try Blendid -- get the pay day smoothie. Last time they recommended the strawberry shortcake but it was so bad that we couldn't finish it. I've gone pretty consecutively for the past couple of weeks and the other consistent trucks I've seen are the following: The Chairman Blendid Creme Brulee Me so Hungry Chicken Waffle Truck Gold Rush Truck Kara's Cupcakes (twice) Seafood/Chowder Truck Parking tip: if no parking is available under Cafe Borrone, you can park near the Menlo Park Library and then walk over (only a 5 minute walk).

Yelp
Checked out off the grid in Menlo Park. Not too crowded. At least 8 food trucks present this Wednesday evening. There are tables near the railroad building at the corner of on Merrill but be aware of the Caltrain buzzing their loud horn as it passes by. Also there's not much shade earlier evening where the picnic tables are located. I enjoyed the baos and a pineapple quencher from BunBao. The pineapple juice delivered as it's named. The mushroom veggies were alright though just a bit on the salty side. We all had a good time with some good food and conversation. Also of note is that the area is dog friendly.

Yelp
They offer a variety of food trucks and is located next to the CalTrain station! While the location is convenient for people hopping off the CalTrain, I found it kind of loud when trying to sit down and eat. I also thought some of the items were a bit pricey, but the servers were very friendly. Here are the food trucks I tried: 1. Cielito Lindo Mexican Street food truck: Baja Fish tacos - I liked the crispy batter and cod! Very filling and large tacos. Carne Asada tacos - I enjoyed these too! Tacos were much smaller than the fish ones. 2. Rolling Duck food truck: Chinese green onion pancake - Tasted homemade but was just a plain pancake. Thai milk tea - I would get this again! 3. Lamas Peruvian food truck: Cheese yuca bites - Loved this! The inside was so cheesy! Sweet potato fries - Would not recommend. They tasted undercooked. 4. Curve ball Mobile food truck: Mushroom melt sliders - Bread was dry, cheese tasted very processed, mushrooms could have been cooked longer, but I liked the grilled onion toppings.

Yelp
This is a chill, low key version of the large gathering that occurs Friday nights @ Fort Mason. The one there can be overwhelming with the large crowd, stress of having to drive up and park in The City, etc. We typically go to the MP version whenever The Chairman is there. We absolutely love their pork belly bao. It's one of our "treats" to ourselves, as you would say. This time, we decided to try some of the other trucks present so the wifey and I shared each meal. Chick N' Bros' Nashville tenders and fries were delicious. The honey was a great complement to whatever level of spice you wanted. The Miss Subi truck has a good number of musubi type offerings, both for carnivores and those other guys! I wanted to try a pirozhki from Borsch Mobile but was saving room for ice cream elsewhere.

Yelp
Went in the fall and loved that there was an off the grid on the penninsula. It's conveniently located next to the CalTrain station. There were 4-5 trucks the night that I went which I looked up prior to going. Had some garlic noodles that hit the spot. Cons were the noise (from the trains) and the fact that there weren't very many tables. However, I did see a couple who brought their own chairs (genius!) and set up them to enjoy their meal. Will definitely be back when it reopens in the spring.

Yelp
Off the Grid keeps moving south. Im not complaining because that means more food choices each week. The city opened up the Caltrain station to 10 or so food trucks and a throng of crowds. Per their official tweet: @Goldrusheatery @thewaffleroost @chairmantruck @karavan @lilgreencyclo @hiyaaaroll @mesohungrytoo @blendid @sanguchon_sf @samschowdermobile were all the participants. Got a great chicken/waffle sandwich some and some solid short rib sliders for dinner. Police presence was heavy but it was fairly well run. Some of the lines took a long time as I dont think they were expecting a crush for soft launch. Well, it can only get better from here. Looking forward to the weekly Wed rotating schedule

Yelp
Southern comfort kitchen truck is everything I expected it to be... so delicious Po'boy shrimp with a side of crab fries that melts in your mouth. Guys at this truck are awesome!!!

Yelp
Came here at 8pm on Wednesday and there were no lines! We usually eat out on weekdays and gripe about being hangry and having to wait for our food so we will try to come here more regularly. There was a great variety of food trucks to choose from and we ended getting a veritable global medley of: - Korean fried chicken - Empanadas - Mango lassi

Yelp
The Menlo Park OtG is one of the best suburban markets in the South Bay. Truck selection is generally decent-- I enjoy The Chairman and new offerings like Me So Hungry Too. Parking can be challenging in the small Caltrain lot. Arrive early for the best parking selection! The bullet trains coming by are a little loud/frustrating while one is trying to eat a $15.00 burger... LOL!
google avatar

Yelp
Now that we have longer evenings and warmer weather, it's a perfect time to check this out. We went tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Nice selection of food trucks, live music, a decent amount of seating (folding chairs), friendly people, everyone having a good time. Just look out when the bullet train goes flying by! WHOOOOSH!!!!

Yelp
Today I saw a new truck: Dum - Indian Comfort/Soul Food. Despite the funny name, I tried their Ragda Patties which were spiced potato cakes, stewed yellow peas, tamarind chutney, onion, cilantro @ $8.50. It was pretty tasty, but I think I'd try their biryani next time. Off the Grid has been approved for the next five years at this location. Should be interesting to see what other trucks show up over time! :)

Yelp
I had never been to Off The Grid until just 2 weeks ago and I am so glad that I went. This particular location is literally like 5 minutes away from my job so as soon as I got off work I headed over there. I knew that the Waffle Roost was here so that was my main reason for coming but once I saw the big variety of food trucks with attractive looking menus and food I was blown away. I had arrived about 1 hour after it started so it was already crowded and full of people but I found that some of the food trucks are worth the wait. I really enjoyed myself here and am looking forward to giving the different food trucks a try.

Yelp
Had a great time at Off The Grid with my wife and students of Menlo College. Went to Los Tolucas Food Truck and the food was great!! Meet Ellie and he was a great guy along with his staff!

Yelp
A very small "Off the Grid" event, but close to where I work in Palo Alto, so I was grateful regardless. I had the Deconstructed Samosa(Curry Up Truck) and the Sweet Potato fries(Me So Hungry Truck). While the deconstructed samosa was amazing, unfortunately the sweet potato fries really left something to be desired :/. I would definitely come here again just because it's such a close location! I came right when they started at 5:00PM, but parking really wasn't an issue, there is plenty of street parking as well as a few spots for you to take near the event itself.

Yelp
Ambiance This is right off the Menlo Park Caltrain. I use to live right over there within 5 minutes. It's a great thing to have that was so close by. There are a ton of food trucks that are there every Wednesday. There is limited seating in the area. There is usually some type of a band playing for a couple of hours. Food Omg, I miss Capelo's BBQ. The ribs there run out so quickly. Get there early! They are fall off the bone. Also, I love The Waffle Roost food truck too. Love me some chicken and waffles any day. Service This depends on the truck. Overall, the wait times can be pretty significant depending on the truck. The service overall is very good. Definitely just try and get there a little earlier before things start to run out.

Yelp
This was my first Off the Grid experience and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. There were all sorts of people that come and a ton of families, so I highly recommend it if you have kids of all ages. You really feel a part of the community at these things. I would say there were about 8 or so trucks and all different so you have fun options to pick from. I thought the prices and what I ate were very reasonable for how good it tasted. There was one dessert truck that I felt was a bit overpriced but still nice to have tried it. It's actually nice that there were two sweet trucks mixed in with all the savory ones. Free music, plenty of chairs. Only negative is that it's right by the train station and when it passes by during the busy commute time, it's a little rough on the ears but if you can forgive that every 30 minutes or so, come here and enjoy the other side of Menlo Park.
google avatar

Lilly W.

Yelp
Fewer choices then I expected. We took the kids on a weeknight and they didn't find anything they wanted to to eat. I think it's kid-friendly but less kid-food friendly. Everything was delicious, it just was too complicated for the under 10 crowd.

Yelp
This wasn't hard to find with all the food trucks congregated by the caltrain. They allow event parking at the normal caltrain parking lot so parking wasn't too hard to find. There are quite a few options: vietnamese, sushi burrito, BBQ, sliders, etc. I ended going for the kome food truck and got the crunch burrito to share. The spicy mayo was good with this. I personally think the sushi burrito is a little pricey for food coming from a food truck, but it was pretty good and I shared one with my friend and it was a good portion. I would love to come back to try the trucks!
google avatar

Yoshikage K.

Yelp
The rating really depends on the food vendor you go to. For example, Borsch Mobile is awesome and I go there whenever they are there. Unfortunately, they don't seem to serve the Menlo Park location anymore.

Yelp
Great first time experience. I'm used to NY food trucks... Off the Grid trumps food trucks I've been to in the past. The food options are great. I think I saw Mexican, BBQ, dessert and more. There's plenty of space for you to enjoy your meal outside in one of the chairs provided by OTG. I ordered the pulled pork with baked beans from the BBQ spot. The potato salad was bomb! I loved it. Beans were ok. The pulled pork was great but the sauce they drizzled on top was amazing. When I go back I'll see if they can drizzle the sauce and mix it in. I ate the top layer of pulled pork along with the sauce and I really wished I had more for the remaining pulled pork. My meal was about 10 bucks and they do take cards. Can't wait to go back and try something else.

Yelp
I love going to Off the Grid! A great way to sample all the different food trucks from the area. Each week is a different week, but you can check their website to see what offerings will be available that day. I've been here a few times and have had: -Little Green Cyclo -Blendid -Sam's Chowder Truck -Koja Kitchen Each week the selection varies. Sometimes there's a live band that plays. There's chairs where you could enjoy your food, but otherwise seating is limited. It can also get loud as the train passes by, but hey it's at the train station. Definitely a good thing to check out on Wednesday evenings!
google avatar

Angie I.

Yelp
I'm so glad Off the Grid came down to Menlo Park! It seems to be more lively than the market in Belmont and a lot more trains stop here. Additionally, you can lock up your bike along the fence, there's plenty of space. The only downsides are that the seating is a bit tight and some of the lines get long. It's usually worth the wait, though!
google avatar

Bart D.

Yelp
Fun place for dinner. The pork belly bao at the chairman was delicious. Chicken tikka fries at curry up was just ok. Fried tofu at KorChiViet was also good but not great. They also close promptly at 8:00pm as we tried to get an ice cream puff unsuccessfully at 8:03. By 7:30 many trucks were also running out of food.
google avatar

Lucas H.

Yelp
I love it. But I think they need tables, and it is too cold, it'll be great after a few weeks. My favorite truck is the We Sushi truck, I recommend the lobster crunch roll and the sushi burrito, for the roll, eat it while it's warm. :)
google avatar

Kristen L.

Yelp
I went last week and it was so fun! There were 10 trucks and I had some delicious Philippino food and a chocolate creme brûlée, two of my favorites. There's music and a bunch of people. It's a great event to bring your family to, though there is a little bit of waiting around.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Food was on point!! Churro waffles, catfish po boy, crab fries were amazing. Def will be back. Delish.
google avatar

Ginny B.

Yelp
Great food trucks, convenient, with live music. It's so fun! Bring the kids. Sometimes there are kids activities.
google avatar

Yelp
Bbq beef brisket and chicken are good. The cornbread muffin was perfect. They have three sauces to choose from. Live music and a lot of cool people. Can't go wrong, every Wednesday.

Renee P.

Yelp
A couple weeks ago I tried a new truck called "Little Red Riding Truck", specializing in German food. I ordered the pork schnitzel with bacon potatoes. They were amazing, cooked and seasoned perfectly. Next time I plan to try the bratwurst with sauerkraut. They have a couple other items, including vegetarian. Very high quality and quantity. Wish them much success.

Felicia W.

Yelp
KoJa is hands down my favorite food truck, the short ribs koja is amazing. Glad it comes to off the grid quite often. Their kamikaze fries are also super tasty.
