Off the Grid Proposes Temporary Use for Upper Haight McDonald Lot at 730 Stanyan | Eater SF

"The local organizers of popular food-truck events, Off the Grid says it has felt a strong connection to the Upper Haight and will submit plans to activate the 730 Stanyan lot in the interim; founder and CEO Matt Cohen notes the site is right across from their original location, and their proposal emphasizes community benefit and financial self-sufficiency while promising job creation, youth and senior services, food-business incubation, and a program of events and activations." - Caleb Pershan

Stopped by for lunch during the off-season — what a pleasant surprise! The place wasn’t crowded, making it a relaxing spot to enjoy a meal. The service was excellent — friendly and attentive. Ordered Cod Taco and Fish burgers, the food was delicious, though a bit on the salty side for my taste. Overall, a great experience and definitely worth a visit!

Google
Great spot in a very convenient location when staying in Sandwich. I love that it has different food choices, lots of beverages and music. It has a festival type of vibe. It was a popular spot the night we went but we found seating. Would go back again.

Maxim K.

Google
Ordered pulled pork tacos and sliced brisket (large). The tacos were more like quesadillas than tacos, and came with some watery-bbq sauce. The brisket was fine, but very plain and I had to add lots of sauce to give it flavor. The cajun fries were disappointing, they were just normal French fries with Cajun seasoning seasoned on top, and also a bit cold. The coleslaw was somehow flavorless? Not sure how but I do not recommend. Good live music though!

What a hidden gem! Off the Grid is one of those places that surprises you in the best way—simple setup, but the food? Absolutely delicious. We started with the Cajun fries, and wow—what a flavor bomb. The seasoning hits all the right notes: a little heat, a tangy zing, and just the right amount of salt. Totally addictive. My mom went for the Bus Fries with pork. Picture those same amazing Cajun fries, piled high with juicy, flavorful pork. Every bite was a savory delight. My dad had the bacon cheeseburger loaded with all the works. It was a hefty, generously sized burger, and he couldn’t stop talking about how good it was. No frills—just solid, satisfying flavor. I had the Sloppy Choppy, and it lived up to its name in the best way. A messy, mouthwatering pile of tender pork, crisp coleslaw, and a sweet slice of pineapple, all nestled on top of regular fries. The textures and flavors came together beautifully. If you’re looking for bold, satisfying comfort food, Off the Grid delivers in a big way. Don’t miss it.

Google
Classic! And the name suits it to a T. Large outdoor seating area, to eat orders to go, or counter service. Juneau ( our dog ) and I just had the pulled pork sandwich, and it was probably the best I've ever had in regards to the portion and taste. Indoor eating and bar as well. Complimentary water outside.

Google
We stopped in for our first time and the food was amazing and we can’t wait to go back! Fantastic brisket, pulled pork, chicken wings and cornbread! The live music tonight was great too. I really enjoyed the outdoor seating, but look forward to going back in the colder months to sit inside too. Very friendly and welcoming staff! I wish I found this gem sooner.

Google
Stopped her on a drive home from the cape and our party of 3 was joyfully surprised. The server was above and beyond helpful and kind and the food was delicious! All the little buildings around the parking lot are a tad confusing, so perhaps the signage could be improved, but a very delightful meal and time all around!

Google
First time here, the food was amazing. Burger was cooked perfectly and the Mac & Cheese with truffle aioli was superb. Live music too which made it an overall 10/10 experience.

Yelp
Best outdoor restaurant & bar in Sandwich. The BBQ will blow your mind. The burger & fries are OUTSTANDING. If you're looking for good food, great vibes, and a fun atmosphere this is the spot for you. Great live music all summer. Skipjack Coffee in the morning is a must. So are the great donuts located steps away from the coffee cart. Friendly staff, great vibes. Love everything about this place.

Yelp
One of my sons lives on the Cape so our whole family was here for his wedding. :D The brisket burger is hands down the way to go! Two of my sons ordered it and it was FIRE! :D I had the Bacon cheeseburger and it was just okay. I ordered their mac 'n cheese with the aioli, which is dolloped on top. Tasted like nothing more than mayonnaise, which to be clear is a food group in my world! I did not like it at all in this instance. :( The burgers are big, however the pricing is expensive in my opinion considering it is all al la cart. Drinks are ridiculously expensive! They are on the Cape, so that just is what it is. Outdoor or indoor seating after ordering from the window with a buzzer to let you know you are up! The young lady at the window was nice however she messed up 2 of our orders so it took more time. There is corn hole to play, cold water with cups, lots of sauces and condiments to choose from! It was a good closing to our time together before heading to the airport. Thank you off the grid! You can trust me; I know my burgers! ;D

Yelp
Great place to go on a nice day in the Summer Season. We went at the end of the season and still had a great time. They have lots of fun food options, a bus turned into a bar, as well outdoor tables , a fire pit and live music. There is a coffee/donut shop on site as well as a taco shop as well. You place your order at a window (food truck style) and they bring your food out to you in togo bags/boxes to eat. Our food was awesome (and messy). All of the staff we encountered were great. Only downfall we could see was the 1 bathroom which resulted in quite a line even on a slow day.

Yelp
First time visiting Sandwich and I just randomly decided to get food at this place. And I'm glad I did. Their pulled pork is the best seller which is what I ordered. I loved how it was cooked and the barbecue sauce as well which had a distinct flavour. The service here is very quick.
google avatar

Yelp
Needed to get some take out because I was too lazy to cook so I ordered a Mac Daddy from OTG. My food was ready promptly at the time requested and since I had high hopes for a hot meal, since I live nearby, I was pleasantly surprised that such a delicious burger came from that crazy kitchen out back. Look at the photo of that burger. The gooey cheese still 'pulled' after a trip in my car to my house. Great Caribbean vibe going on at the patio bar in the Summer and the Gallery is open in the winter with a nice bar to keep you oiled up. Do give it a try. Also try the Pig Lebowski, my usual.

Yelp
Visited the town of sandwhich on a whim and we found ourselves here after realizing we were down the street and it was rated number two on Yelp. AMAZING! I would definitely come back. Great drinks, food, and there was live music. Order at the window and then they text you when your food is ready. Plenty of seating and great environment. We got a bacon burger w lettuce and bus sauce. Delish! It reminded both of us of 5 guys but much better. I didn't feel heavy and sluggish after eating it. Cajun fries were great too and my partner got better call slaw sandwich. Everything was delicious. I wanna come back to try the pork sandwich and birria tacos.
google avatar

Yelp
Food, atmosphere, entertainment and service are top notch and maybe even a notch above that! I'm not a drinker so I can't speak to that but from what I could see, they excel in that as well.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
Great evening sitting in the sunny end of the bar listening to Darkstar Project. Suzanne made awesome Mai Tais and Painkillers. Had been dreaming of their brisket and birria tacos and they did not disappoint. Cannot wait to get back and get some more tacos!
google avatar

Yelp
I had high hopes for this place but left sorely disappointed. Ordered brisket with sweet potato fries, mac and cheese, and a side of pulled pork. The chopped brisket was shredded like pulled pork which was a disappointing presentation and thanks to the fat content, an unappealing mushy texture. It was greasy, flavorless, and disappointing. Adding the honey bbq sauce did little to improve the experience as the sauce was bland and flavorless. The pulled pork was dry and bland, but unlike the brisket had a decent texture . The sweet potato fries were somehow simultaneously mushy, yet had burnt portions. Where things really went off the rails was the mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was flavorless and was dripping with grease. The attached picture shows the puddle that was in the bottom of the food container. Other members of our group ordered burgers- I did not try but it was clear that grease had soaked through the entire bun on way of them. The kids hot dogs featured soggy, untoasted buns and shriveled, unappealing hot dogs. The only item that looked or tasted decent were the regular fries. They were crisp albiet a little greasy. The ambience was so so. The layout leaves much to be desired. The majority of the tables are on uneven ground and are sloped enough that food tends slide on the table and it is uncomfortable to sit. We had been excited to try this place after hearing rave reviews from family members, but after this visit, we will definitely not return.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this place. We go about once a week. Even all winter. Their food is so good! I highly recommend the Birria tacos. Amazing! None like them anywhere around here! The aïoli mac n cheese i literally dream about when i sleep lol. The burgers are good. It's funny cus I don't like French fries. But their fries are too freaking die for! They also have so many sauce options to dip. My son gets the dry rub chicken wings. Those are excellent as well. The staff is always friendly and kind. I almost love the cozy vibe inside in the winter even more than the fun outdoor Cape vibe in the summer. You almost feel like you're in a ski lodge or something. Really an awesome spot. I'm so glad I found it one year looking for a Fathers Day spot.
google avatar

Greg K.

Yelp
I freakin' love this place, and will work it into our Cape dining agenda every time we're here. A one of a kind, funky vibe, served out of a transplanted old school bus. The bar is like something out of Jimmy Buffet wet dream (and I mean that in a good way). Tables galore, and a communal firepit as well, which is great as summer tails off inevitably into fall. The 'q' is so on point, both pulled pork and brisket, and the portion size is ridiculous (two can share a sando easily). Great fries, and multiple bbq sauce options to try. A special bonus on the last visit was the duo rockin' out '80's favorites. Hell yes, I'll get up and dance awkwardly to the Romantics every damn time! HEY!
google avatar

Catherine R.

Yelp
Cool, hipster spot. Nice staff. Unfortunately, the wings were a huge disappointment. They had no flavor and slightly undercooked. Personally, would not go back. Can see how it draws people to hang out outside with the food trucks in season.

Karen M.

Yelp
Pulled pork is outstanding and the outdoor feeling is like Being on the set of Peter Pan-

Brian R.

Yelp
Come hungry and leave happy. At first, it seems like this gem is appreciated mainly for having a reliable menu and a local and friendly ambiance. After a few meals here, not only does the menu scratch a certain comfort food itch that not many other local restaurants have to offer, but the food quality and taste are truly phenomenal. The brisket is fall apart at a huff and a puff tender and the sides offer various different levels of flavor to scratch any itch. Don't let the paper bag fool you, this menu is full of flavor bombs leaving you full to the brim. I just hope you have nothing important to do after a mac daddy, because your bed will claim you. Outstanding vibe at the bar and very supportive of local business and flair. Do not forget to visit their sauce bar for some great jerk sauce!

Noah M.

Yelp
Amazing food and great staff, best burgers around no question, definitely recommend stopping here if your going down 6a

Yelp
I am a Cape local and would eat here 2 or 3 times a month. I went recently with my family. I don't know what changed but the food was awful. 3 out of 4 of the orders were wrong and ALL the food was cold. Very sorry to see this great place crash.

Kathleen S.

Yelp
Food was Awesome! Went in the Fall and there was a Monster Turkey Sandwich on the Menu on a Huge Bun with Stuffing formed into a Giant Patty - Loaded with Turkey and Gravy! Mama Mia - It tasted just like my Mama Made It!!! Got Spicy Fries with it and YUM!
google avatar

Amy A.

Yelp
I found this place to be pretty cool. The food truck was an old bus, with a bar outside. Tables seemed clean and provided plenty of shade on a hot day. The woman that took our order was helpful and knowledgeable about the sandwiches. I ordered the "sloppy choppy" and it was pretty sloppy but delicious. The sandwich was huge. Will be returning next time we're in Sandwich
google avatar

Deborah H.

Yelp
Great food including salads Good times and chill ambience Live music Nice bar Was a highlight of our trip Good company My pulled pork sandwich was just the right balance of spice and meat
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
This place is super cool, really good food, good drinks and good service. Great place to come and hang with friends during the summer.

Yelp
What a find, well a friend told us about this place so it wasn't necessarily a find. Its quite a strange set up, it's two food trucks yet there's a bar outside. You can view my photos to understand the set up. Plus a nice firepit area but that area was packed with people. I ordered the absolute best Pastrami sandwich I've ever had and my husband got brisquit which was very good but let's get back to the pastrami! It was packed with meat and mustard and pickles and some kind of sauce. It was divine! We were in a heated tent because it's New England and I swear it's never going to warm up here. People asked to sit at our picnic table with us and I asked "did any of you order the pastrami", we'll they did and when it came out and they took their first bite they were oohing and ahhing as I was. It's a new addition to the menu so my husband told the owner of this establishment to make it a permanent menu item. Word on the street is come Memorial Day you won't be able to get in here. Go check it out soon and enjoy!
google avatar

Kate K.

Yelp
This Spot RULES!! My cousin has been raving about Off the Grid for years and I was like ok yeah.. Finally checked it out with the crew while on a much needed vacation and WOW... Just WOW! The ambiance, the food, the prices, the offerings-- it is all perfection! Their new location is even better and they have plenty of seating that is spaced out. It still gets mighty crowded and I def recommend coming before 6pm. Live music was playing and it was not too loud and did not interfere with us talking; huge plus! Dog friendly, accepts cards, has a bar area and options for vegetarians and vegans. Cannot wait to come back and try more on the menu!
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
We went on the day before Mother's Day - before tourist season began in earnest, but when people start to come out for good food. We brought our dog, but felt that given the modest crowds (including at least 2 dogs) we would eat in the car. I had the Hot Pastrami sandwich (a special), which was as delicious as it was messy. Ditto for my wife's "Island Jerk Chicken Sando". Both came with fries, wet naps and plenty of napkins! Our dog Poppy had a hamburger, which was clearly a hit. We noticed that there was also a ramen truck as well as a taco stand - not to mention a bar on the spacious property. Once we're able to socialize our dog more, it could be a go-to spot. My only nit was the price. Two human sandwiches and one canine burger cost us over $30. Will we be back? Of course!
google avatar

Ryan R.

Yelp
The chicken wings & Mac n cheese. Order it and tell me they ain't the best you've ever had! lol, taste is relative but they really are amazing IMO.
google avatar

Kim D.

Yelp
Great vibe, Pig Lebowski was awesome! Dog and kid friendly. Plenty of umbrellas if it rains.
google avatar

Todd R.

Yelp
Finally stopped here for lunch. Fun atmosphere with good food and ecletic bus that centers as the bar. We will be back.

Rodney A.

Yelp
This is an honest review. We went here with family for breakfast. It was hands down the worst breakfast I've ever had. McDonald's would beat it. I ordered a Benedict sandwich type thing that arrived at or table in a to go bag. The whole sandwich had been heated in a microwave. The meat was rubbery and bun chewy and the accompanying sauce was nothing like a hollandaise. I'll nnevr go back and warm you to stay away as well. It was barely edible.
google avatar

Sophia D.

Yelp
very cool experience with multiple food trucks. we got the BBQ sandwiches, coleslaw was exceptional. Great atmosphere in the evening time. picnic tables were dirty and dingy. great music and multiple places to sit
google avatar

Lilly c.

Yelp
SOOO good! These aren't your average fast food burgers- you can really taste the quality. Also, I highly recommend the Cajun fries. Servers were nice when I explained that they gave me the wrong fries haha. It's not super comfy to eat on the outdoor picnic tables, but it's fun!

Chris K.

Yelp
We are locals who have been coming to Off the Grid since it opened. It used to be our favorite place, not anymore. It seems once they became popular, they raised their prices significantly, catering to tourists on vacation and forgetting about the locals who helped put them on the map. The drink prices are ridiculous, especially when you have to wait in line, sometimes for 20 minutes or longer just to get one. Not to mention, one woman bartender has made us feel like we were bothering her on numerous occasions. Please if you don't like your job, get a different one!

Carla D.

Yelp
We had a retirement party at OTG, this past Friday (under the tent) and it couldn't have been better! Brandon (catering) was so attentive and made sure we had everything we needed, and the food was spectacular! Catherine - our personal bartender, was awesome! She was very sweet and gracious! I would not think twice about having another event here! Thank you, OTG!

Ben W.

Yelp
Phenomenal ambience for an outdoor true virgin island style restaurant that captures the feel of the soggy dollar while serving some well crafted bbq. Real addition to the sandwich area that has excellent food and great live music highly recommend!
google avatar

Dan F.

Yelp
Lit Met my mom and sister here , there was a ramen truck and a taco truck both were good. The bbqs always excellent. Top tier atmosphere
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
Great place to take kids and just hang out. BBQ is good. The biria tacos at the taco place are legit and I flavorful, my friend from San Diego approved! In season, it's packed so the wait for food can be a bit. Haven't tried Skip jack coffee yet. We come here often.
google avatar

Debbie C.

Yelp
5* for food! We went during Covid and ate outside under a large tent. I want to go again now that Covid has subsided. They had a few different food trucks outside serving a variety of dishes from different countries. They had a full bar setup outside too! I believe they close for the winter.

Patricia A.

Yelp
Great staff! But the fish sizzle sandwich was a huge disappointment! Tiny piece of fish in a roll filled with tons of mayo and soggy bacon. This is the second time this happened. Stick with the burger, you can't go wrong. Typically this is our go-to outside restaurant. Love the vibes just not the fish!!
google avatar

Yelp
We needed to go out for a Sunday drive to pick up an item I'd won at a nearby auction. Once we secured the load we figured we'd get a nice lunch before getting back on the road. I'd done a quick search and come up with "Off The Grid" and our auctioneer confirmed it was a good choice. When you're a bit removed from the community it is sometimes hard to tell who is open during the winter season and who is doing well with the covid-19 protocols. Lucky for us, they are open in the winter months and they are doing well in terms of protocols. We started with a frito pie. Yes, its a gimmick - but damn, their beans are good! I had the best bacon cheeseburger I can remember - it perfectly straddled the line between a fancy but too rich burger with gross tasting hoity toity toppings and a greasy fast food burger. The bacon was crispy, the cheese was gooey, the burger was flavorful and well cooked and best of all....the bun was moist yet toasted....BUT NOT SOGGY!!! Fries were enough for us to share. Crispy. Salty. Perfect. My husband was in love with his chopped brisket sandwich with slaw and pineapple. It was a bit messy and maybe 1/2 too tall but it was well loved and still talked about. It was a memorable outing. A nice day to sit at a picnic table and hear some nostalgic music in the background. Picnic tables are socially distant. There's a hand sanitizer and a hand washing station. Menu is accessed via qr code if you need to contemplate - it is also posted above the order window. The food was delivered to us quickly and we sat to enjoy a nice sunny day out in December.

jon q.

Yelp
I stand corrected. I have been here twice this season and both times service, music, and food were outstanding. The inside bar has a great atmosphere, our server (Kelly) was fast, courteous and helpful. Band was great. Sat outside tonight and bartender was fast, efficient and friendly. If you want a fun bar with a wicked cool vibe, and great service, head to Off The Grid.
google avatar

Kathy G.

Yelp
Fun. Kids and dogs welcome! Great food and great service. Try the watermelon margarita or pain killer.

Ashley M.

Yelp
Couldn't imagine a better place to spend an afternoon in the sun with live music and so much good food. Must try: birria tacos (it's like a French dip version of a taco) and the painkiller it taste like the original ones in usvi/bvi
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
Great service, delicious food, good folks - had the Mac Daddy, and it was seriously one of the best burgers I've ever had! Plus, super kid-friendly, and you can even bring the pup (puppy also had a burger and probably was the best day of their lives lol). Highly recommended!
google avatar

Debra T.

Yelp
SHUT THE FRONT DOOR.. or the bus door in this case! This is more like Out of This World... All right, imagine full bar with local beers, bbq but not just any kind of bbq... Caribbean BBQ! So the brisket ain't Texas, it ain't Mississippi and it ain't South Carolina. It's Smokey, sweet and incredibly moist. Prepare yourself for coleslaw with a kick... a wee bit spicy and the burnt end beans are OhhEmmGeee! It was really nice to have the owner come by and say hi and ask us how everything was going. Joel is a pretty amazing guy with a great place. Live music and a super cool art gallery. Bring the family and prepare to chow down!
google avatar

Zak M.

Yelp
This place is the bomb!! Awesome food, even better atmosphere! The place to go if you want to party, chill, or just have a good time. Got the "Big Macdaddy Burger". It was fabulous!!! The live music was great too. Can't wait for my next visit!
google avatar

Jillian R.

Yelp
BBQ is fantastic. Sandos can get a little mushy from a lot (really freaking delicious) sauce, but the protein is always so amazing. The line for beer can be crazy long, and I wish there was a better solution. It took me 30 minutes to get two beers off tap, but that's because there was a long line, not because bartender wasn't working hard. The vibe there is 5 star. Always a nice friendly atmosphere, often with live music that makes for a fun and unique experience. I recommend this place highly despite the few drawbacks.
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
If you're looking for a low key vibe with some pretty good bbq this is the place for you. 3 of us had dinner last night. I had the Sloppy Choppy, it was sloppy and delicious, my daughter had a Pig Lebowski which she thought was great and my wife had a Bacon Cheeseburger also very good. All orders came with loads of fries. Good selection of beers to go along with the food. Place was fairly crowded and it had live music. Outside seating with limited seats under cover. Seafood and tacos were also available on site.

Tom G.

Yelp
I really was not impressed. I found the food to be okay but overpriced for what it was. The service was basically nonexistent so I'm not sure why they ask for a tip before you even get your food. The bartender and one person walking around seemed more interested in gabbing with customers than taking orders. You are sitting outside on mostly unlevel ground so be prepared for that. Paper plates would be helpful to offer.
google avatar

Sue B.

Yelp
Joe and team do an incredible job! The best smoked pulled pork I've ever had. Perfect flavor, not too hot, heavenly spices and juicy. Really cute, spacious, convenient and clean place. Extra points for the foot operated sinks to help rinse off that yum barbecue sauce. Dog friendly. Love the attention to detail and the time they took to draw a cute picture of our fur baby on the side of chicken. Great people, incredible food, awesome cocktail and beer options. This is now a must have stop for us when traveling to or from the Cape.

Yelp
Great little unique spot that has a lot going for it. My wife had the Portabella burger she LOVED IT, also said the fries were great. She also had the frozen Pina Colada which she also enjoyed. Said it wasn't too sweet, it was perfect. I had the Pig Lebowski, the sandwich was huge. Almost too big, almost. However, when you have a large sandwhich, you MUST have it on bread that can hold it. This bread could not, it was delicious but to soft to hold the massive amount of meat. There was coleslaw on the sando which I do not like, if I knew it was there I would've asked no slaw. Not their fault. It did have "pickle fries" which are fried pickles in strips, delicious! The sandwich was lacking a sauce. If they tossed the pork in a BBQ or something it would've taken it over the top. Fries were delish. Got a side of corn bread. Was good but I've had better. To drink I had the watermelon margarita and I was very disappointed. There was zero flavor to the beverage. I couldn't taste the watermelon or the liquor. It tasted like water with a slight HINT of watermelon. Very disappointed. Kids both had the nuggets and fries. They enjoyed them as well. Seating is outdoors which is totally fine but 2 tables that we sat at were terribly crooked. They leaned real bad and you just couldn't she and enjoy the meal. We ended up under the tent which was okay just incredibly windy, which made eating difficult also. Wanted to give five stars but my drink and the flimsy sando held it back two stars. My wife LOVED every part of her meal (except the wind) and gave it 5 stars. So 4 stars is our average for our visit. Would def go back again.

Yelp
Need more parking and consistency of great food! Only have I ever had a bad experience here. Other than that, AMAZING food! The service is alright but can be rude. The atmosphere is pretty cool, but again the parking is scarce.
