12 Hawaiian Restaurants To Try in Portland | Eater Portland

"This casual cafe (with a branch in Milwaukie) has more combo plates than the competition, so it’s easy to sample three classics like teriyaki beef, kalua pork, and wild-caught garlic mahi mahi all at once, even if solo. Ohana also has a large selection of desserts, from an Okinawan purple sweet potato pie on a macadamia crust to a Kauai coffee creme brulee. This is one of the only Hawaiian restaurants in town that serves the island staple poi." - Jenni Moore

This is a new favorite of mine! Best Portuguese sausage I've ever had, even on the islands. The teriyaki chicken and beef were amazing, with a sweet teriyaki sauce, and the rice was perfectly done. And the deserts look so good i am going to have to come back to try them all. The food looked so good i had to dig in before taking a pic lol.

I First must start with the disclaimer I love Hawaiian Food and Culture and History. And feel that there should always be a land acknowledgement and a basic understanding of the history told of how the islands were stolen. On the the Atmosphere.. Indoors, Small would of been. Great if they had outdoor seating. It was also missing some music. Decorations that reminded me of an escape from Portland was missing too. The food was good, nothing spectacular. It was very flavorful. We chose the Ohana plate, we ordered extra mac and rice to share the plate. My gf loves hot sauce and they happened to have more than rooster sauce, habanero salsa. We ordered the fruit punch to drink and it was very refreshing!

Google
Excellent experience all around. The owner is so kind and friendly. He recommended a couple of dishes and we were able to try just about everything on the menu. All was wonderful, we really loved the pork. We capped it off with a slice of the chocolate coconut pie which was fantastic. A perfect balance of flavors. It is homemade by the owner’s wife who has clearly perfected the recipe.

Google
Portions were fantastic! The macaroni salad spot on! I wish the chicken was a little more flavor. Service was great too! I will be back!

Google
Delicious! I had the BBQ chicken. It was the perfect combo of a nice char on the outside and so tender I could pull it apart with my fork. My server was very nice and attentive as well. The sauce had great flavor I didn't get any this time, but you *must* try the sweet potato pie. I'm definitely coming back for some when I'm not so stuffed!

Google
Aloha from Ohana! I say Terryaki done right! For good Hawaiian food this place hits the spot every time! I had the Terryaki Chicken with the macaroni salad & rice . I love how juicy and tender the chicken is. With just the right amount of sauce! The Banana cream pie is delicious! I recommend both! Soo good that I got 2 banana cream pies to go for my parents! Fresh, authentic and good!

Google
Honestly the best food ive ever had.. i dont even know what i ordered but it was good! The coconut pineapple wine was great. Their special iced tea was amazing.

Google
This restaurant was a staple for me when I lived a block away. I haven’t lived in Milwaukie in about a decade, but I still think about their Mac salad which in my opinion is the best in the Portland area. Nobody else has ever topped it for me, even the more popular Hawaiian spots.

Yelp
As soon as my friends and family walked into Ohana Hawaiian Cafe, our noses told us that we had randomly picked the perfect place! The dining area is spacious but not encumbered by a zillion tables. The people were friendly, and our food smelled smelled delicious that i failed to take a picture. It was delicious, everyone cleared their plates, and I look forward to returning.

Yelp
What a wonderful family restaurant! I came in on a whim later in the afternoon. My husband is fond of Hawaiian food but I'd never ordered food from this place before even tho we do live in the neighborhood. The restaurant was pleasant inside. Cool, quiet, the smell of delicious food wafted thru the whole dining area. There was a display case filled with specialty pies up front by the register. I was greeted promptly by the front host. She gave me a menu and offered me a chair while I looked. I ordered a combo meal and slice of sweet potato pie. My food came out quickly(but not TOO fast) and I was delightfully surprised when I was told that they thrown in an additional slice of pie as it was "irregularly sized" and couldn't be sold as it was. I won't say no to a free slice of pie! The food was Delicious. Both the kalua pork and teriyaki chicken were perfectly cooked. There could have been more cabbage in the kalua but that's just personal preference. My husband liked the Mac salad that was served as a side. The pie was superb. I'll definitely order more slices than I think I'll need next time. I'm sure we will eat them all. The only drawback to this location is that there is only on street parking. Which is not a dealbreaker by any means. Highly recommend

Yelp
I'm always shocked as to why this place isn't packed with people. Ohana is the best place to come for Hawaiian food! Anytime we are in the area we come here, because we know they will never disappoint!! Food is always delicious and the service is always exceptional!! Aside from the pictured items, we also ordered a coconut cake to-go. The cake came with a raspberry sauce that tied the cake together! I always recommend this place (both locations) to anyone and everyone!!

Yelp
I visited Ohana Hawaiian Cafe to get some shave ice. The service was great. I took my shave ice to go. I got vanilla and mango as my flavors. The shave ice was soft and refreshing. It wasn't as soft as some other places but was close to the soft texture that I like. I recommend stopping by here for some great shave ice.

Yelp
Ohana in the City of Roses! Street parking is a little tricky if it's busy, but the food and atmosphere make it totally worth it. Food was excellent! Lovely experience

Yelp
Wonderful service, only one person taking orders and doing the cash register and one person doing the cooking! After we arrive the place got full fast for lunch on a Sunday. The kalua pig should have been stated as kalua pig and cabbage. Teriyaki chicken was a little burnt and the light teriyaki sauce was poured over it, and a little dried out. The lomi salmon you really have to take a close look to find specs of it. Kudos to having poi, lomi salmon and Lau lau, not many places have those on the menu. Overall the savory items needed more salt. The haupia was hearty, lots of corn starch was used. Nice presentation with a slice of fresh pineapple on the bottom and whipped cream and toasted coconut on top. Opu was full, time to moi moi

Yelp
I've had Ohana's Kalua pig and teriyaki beef before, but this was my first time having the garlic prawns. They sautéed to perfect point of doneness, with a delicious garlic flavor. I'm not sure how to rate the kalua pig, other than to say it was bomb. Not too salty and not too fatty. I love kalua pig so much. The beef teriyaki was good as well. Nice tender cuts of beef, grilled just right, with tasty teriyaki sauce I tried the grilled pineapple too, for the first time. It tasted like, grilled pineapple. Ohana is a solid quality restaurant, day in and day out. Til next time.

Yelp
Herr again after a wonderful vacation in Maui. Brought my father and wife here. I had the Musubi, a fun snack we learned about in Maui. I also had a side of Hawaiian mac salad and banana pie. Service was friendly and helpful. Food came out of the kitchen in a reasonable time.

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Greeted as soon as we arrived. Our order was plated quickly. Clean dining area. The shaved ice was the best part!
google avatar

Yelp
Food is 100% authentic and DELICIOUS! I have been coming here since they first opened and I've never been disappointed! I lived in Hawaii for 4 years and Ohana's food is the BEST Kalua Pork and Teriyaki Chicken I've ever had. Today I tried their Chocolate Haupia Pie and it's unbelievably rich, moist, and just the right amount of chocolate, coconut, and macadamia nut crust.. yum! If you make the drive down Sandy Blvd. in Portland or to Main Street in Milwaukie, you will NOT regret stopping at Ohana Hawaiian Cafe!

Yelp
Normally I don't pay much attention to food trucks but the food here was pretty good. The staff was friendly. I did have to wait about 20 mins for food but that just means it's fresh.
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
I went here in the summer and I'm leaving a review kind of two months later but when I went it was a bit of a struggle to get more food or a glass of water. The chicken was good but I would skip the dessert. I think they had two people working but it was just my friend and a part of six so not a lot to really handle it would seem.
google avatar

Yelp
Too hungry, didn't catch the before shot but the food was so good. Came in on a Thursday evening around 6:30 pm and it was empty. Everything was super well seasoned! Chicken with teriyaki sauce was juicy, Mac salad was basic, couldn't be mad at it. The garlic noodles and shrimp were SO good. Garlicky and stir fried noodles with some crispy garlic bits and the shrimp was juicy and the char was beautiful. Good prices for the portions. Street parking. Didn't have enough room to try desserts but next time for sure shaved ice!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here to try the pies and when I got there there was maybe two parties waiting for their food other than that no one behind me in line. I ordered a slice of each of the 4 pies/cakes togo. Right after I ordered the cashier went to go take the pies out to get ready to slice them. After that a wave of people coming from some event came in and a cook in the back told the cashier to go take their orders. I waited for quite some time as everyone else was seated and they're shaved ice was made all before my cake slices were distributed out. I eventually got my pies which were all very good. The Banana cream pie was not too sweet and had a good banana filling flavor. The sweet potatoes pie actually had a pretty good sweet potato flavor and melts really well with the white gelatin layer. The chocolate was good but kind of plain. The chiffon cake was very good and had a noticeable tangy bite.

Cynthia S.

Yelp
The service and food were good. Prices were on the high side, though it is a sit down to order establishment and inflation costs can be figured in. Still disappointed that they were out of all desserts aside from the shaved ice.

Yelp
This Hawaiian cafe is a short walk from our place and is a no-frills restaurant on the second story of a two-story building. But looks can be deceiving because the food they put out is definitely of the homemade variety. This was not our first trip here but the food both to go and done in have been consistent. My wife ordered a teriyaki beef plate and I got the pulled pork and teriyaki chicken combo plate. Both each come with a scoop of white rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. A nice accompaniment to the protein. For dessert we got a slice of banana cream pie to share but in the past have gotten their shave ice. Wonderful food. Will be back :)

Ronny N.

Yelp
Terrible representation of authentic Hawaiian food. My chicken plate consisted of chicken thighs swimming in a sweet soup of teriyaki and flavorless, over mayonnaised, mac salad. I never have to come back to this establishment.

Yelp
We were craving Hawaiian food & decided to check this place out. I'm glad we did, it is phenomenal!! 10/10 highly recommend it. I got the loco moco & hubby got the Waimea plate (kalua pig & teriyaki chicken). Portion sizes were generous & we took leftovers home that we ate later that evening. The staff was nice & the cook even came out to ask us how our food was. The service was quick, we didn't wait more than 15 minutes to get our order. Plus it's a cute cafe that is small & cozy with Hawaiian decor all around. Definitely a must try if your in the area. We will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little Hawaiian cafe that left us full and happy. The tofu steaks were surprisingly flavorful and delicious and so was the chicken. The service was quick and the prices were decent. The pies sounded delicious so I really want to go back and try those!

Roop P.

Yelp
We stopped into the Sandy location for a shaved ice tonight and stood by at the Wait to be Seated sign for 10-15 minutes while the lady at the counter completed a phone call. Multiple staff walked back and forth in the background and ignored us completely. At one point the staff member on the call mouthed "Sorry." and kept taking the call instead of putting the person on hold for 15 seconds and calling anyone up. Not recommended. Avoid this, please.
google avatar

Nicklyn G.

Yelp
Went for Loco Moco - not the traditional way I've had in Kona but they accommodated my changes and I enjoyed the dish. I asked for the Kailua pork rather than the burger patty (additional cost for accommodation). The macaroni salad was good but missed the potato additive I've experiencedI Hawaii. It is very much cafe style casual, service was adequate but again I'm familiar with Hawaii time so had to adjust accordingly. Don't expect to be in a hurry:). Forgot to take a picture of my plate - sorry

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and had the delicious teriyaki chicken and bbq chicken entrees. Incredible sauces! But what made the whole meal was the incredible desserts. We had the purple sweet potato pie and the sky high coconut cake both of which were excellent. Great service too!

Yelp
Ohana cafe felt like auntie's house. And your uncle is always coming in and out of the backyard with a tray of something or a bucket of sawce. I was able to try the Shoyu chicken, Kalua pig, and that sweet, fine-ass teriyaki! All three were so tender, so much FLAVOR! The shoyu sauce feels like a warm, familiar hug that you just keep wanting to go back to. The kalua pig has an incredibly deep-deep porky depth that can't be missed and the teriyaki?? THE TERIYAKI???!?!!!! Don't miss it! Grilled. Sauced. Tender. Incredible. And don't sleep on the Mac Salad, it's a MUST! Smooth, creamy and when it mixes with all those delicious, hot, tasty meats????? Delicious, harmonious, heaven! Finish it all off with a slice of that purple sweet potato Haupia PIE!! With the Macadamia nut crust?!?! Don't sleep on the Lilikoi cake and the Banana Cream pie and the coconut cream PIE....seriously, y'all. SERIOUSLY. Go ahead and order that Musubi to go, you know you'll regret it later if you don't. Go see your auntie and uncle at Ohana. You've been missing them.

Risa M.

Yelp
Called in for pick up. All order requests were not listened to (sauce on side & subbing more rice instead of Mac). When we did get to the restaurant to pick up, it was extremely packed and the only waitress was a teenage girl struggling to manage a packed house plus to go orders. I'm not mad at her for not following the requests, I'm mad that she was all alone, which led to the order being wrong. This falls on management and owners. The food was ok. Nothing extraordinary. I used to eat here all the time growing up, and am sad to see what's come of it.
google avatar

Yelp
Haven't eaten Hawaiian food in quite awhile. The teriyaki chicken was very good. Chicken was juicy and the flavors were great.
google avatar

Peggy L.

Yelp
I'm from Oahu and was interested in trying this place since the reviews and pics looked pretty good. First of all, maybe the owners have too many chain stores, but the workers they hired to run the Portland store are not very friendly. I made the mistake of ordering the Ohana plate and the Aloha plate which both have short ribs and chicken. I thought there was a difference between the bbq chicken vs teriyaki chicken, which there is back home, but they tasted exactly the same. Also the salt-rubbed short ribs tasted exactly the same as the teriyaki short ribs. Anyhow my mistake! Def not coming back here with the customer service lacking that 808 vibe. No ono grindz here! For that price I was expecting way more :(

April H.

Yelp
Great food and massive portions. Staff are attentive and friendly. The kahlua pork is great. They also have shave ice.
google avatar

Erica S.

Yelp
The food and service were great! There is parking right on Sandy Blvd for convenience. The ambiance was quieter and perfect for a business meeting with a client.

Darren T.

Yelp
Excellent experience. Big portions!!!! I got the short ribs. My son ordered the chicken teriyaki. Some places would cut off some of the meat from the ribs then have you pay whatever they charge. This place gives you the full cut. It was delicious. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Best shaved ice in Portland, hands down! The owner knew why we were here the moment we walked in the door. Although dine-in services have apparently been suspended here because of COVID, the owner chuckled when she informed us that we were the 28th customers in a row to have come specifically for the shaved ice. And who wouldn't? There's nothing better on a scorching hot August day! We grabbed a quick bowl of peach & coconut flavored ice, which even the regular size is massive and inexpensive! I only sampled a bite, but the flavors hit like a freight train: sweet without being sickeningly so, and not overpowering. It'll take you back to your childhood in an instant! I've never quite jived with Hawaiian food as a cuisine, but there's no arguing that they know what they are doing with their frozen confections!
google avatar

Emily F.

Yelp
Love Ohana's! Real shave ice, great grilled meat with authentic Hawaiian sides. Everyone so always very kind and I leave feeling better then when I got there
google avatar

Rafael V.

Yelp
I ordered Chicken Teriyaki and Kaluah Pig Everything was great EXCEPT The Pork was Way Too Salty.... So Salty I had to throw it out. Never getting food from there again.
google avatar

Megs S.

Yelp
Ono Hawaiian food! Ordered the laulau plate which came with rice, Mac salad, lomi salmon (not lomi tomato) and haupia! I asked for poi instead of rice and the cashier said they usually have poi but there's a shortage in Hawaii. Makes sense with the flooding. Either way, everything was good, even the shave ice! Tried their ube and chocolate haupia pies, which were delectable!
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
Had lunch here & will be back for more! I love musubi & this is some of the best I've ever had. Perfectly sliced, perfectly grilled w/ a delicious sauce. The rice was amazing as well, nice big pad. Husband had the Hawaiian Chicken & was continually making "yum" noises as he ate. Pretty sure he liked it! Don't get me started on the Mac Salad! Creamy, tasty & addictive. We heard someone picking up a to-go order call it "Crackeroni Salad". Know I know why. The place was spotless & the staff was very friendly. It's a Five Star for us!
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
Only got to try the kalua pork here but it was tasty! And it had cooked cabbage mixed in, most other places here in Portland don't make it that way. Would definitely try some of their other menu items - especially their desserts.
google avatar

Vanissa T.

Yelp
So far, this little place has been my go to for Hawaiian bbq. I've always hesitated with the price of the plate to the portion, but my recent trip there I got a significant amount of food, at least enough to take home and have dinner lol and I always catch myself coming back so I'd say it's worth it. I consistently order the aloha plate and I sub teriyaki chicken for bbq chicken w extra scoop of Mac. Delicious, flavorful, loves the char on the food and the portion was nice! My love ordered the sumo plate, comes with ribs, pork, and bbq chicken. The bbq chicken was marinated perfectly and definitely would come back and order it again. The pork was nicely cut and by far the tastiest thing on the plate. I definitely would recommend this place if you got a extra couple bucks to spend!!
google avatar

Gracie S.

Yelp
Everything I've tried from Ohana Hawaiian Cafe has been excellent! I especially enjoyed their poke. Poke was seasoned perfectly and tasted really fresh. The quality and consistency of their food is what brought me back to this place. You can see and taste the pride that they take in preparing the food. It's not just thrown together like some other places in the area with similar food that I've tried. They also offer chocolate haupia pie and other pies just like back home. To top it off, they have shave ice too! Go check them out!!!
google avatar

Felicia P.

Yelp
The most amazing grilled salmon teriyaki in town. I haven't tried anything else I'm stuck on this dish it's just too good. I'm pescatarian so I don't have too many options. I want to try the coconut cake next time I stop in.
google avatar

Tricia S.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch after passing by and realizing that there was a Hawaiian lunch spot. Inside is very inviting with island art, delicious smells, and friendly staff. It was pretty empty (1 other person) so we sat near the window and looked out onto Sandy. It took a while for the food to arrive but I figured they were cooking fresh so no biggie. The kitchen is open so you can watch the action. We shared the Kahala plate - bbq beef, kalua pig, and garlic shrimp. Meats were well cooked and flavored but there were only 4 shrimp ... for $22 I would have expected more. Plus, a typical plate lunch comes with 2 scoops rice and 1 scoop Mac ... This comes with 1 and 1. The yakisoba with chicken was okay (for the kids). The chicken was really dry so it needed a dipping sauce. Will probably be back and try something else.
google avatar

Ping K.

Yelp
The last time I was here was 10 years ago!! The owner Matt was an exceptional host.. He made sure we knew his menu well, took time to explain his menu and what were good match for the pineapple drinks etc.. We ordered so many dishes and their portions were very generous.. we were so staffed. Kalua pig was amazing! They also provide catering services. We once used their catering service and what you know... huge portion!!
google avatar

Lauren F.

Yelp
Anytime I've order pick-up I am never disappointed. The food is made fresh and yes, that means it might be a longer wait time... and thats how good food should be served by order and fresh! Teriyaki thin beef is my absolute favorite and bring me back to Hawaii every time. Thank you for putting your heart into traditional Hawaiian meals.

Anna S.

Yelp
Grabbed dinner from here and it was amazing. Everyone was happy with their order and we had enough for leftovers if we wanted. The staff is so friendly and Matt, the owner, is super cool too. A great spot to stop by if you're looking for tasty food!

Bob S.

Yelp
10/10 food. Always the best service nicest people ever. Not as busy as it should be. Lilikoi cake is out of this World . Never had a single menu item that I didn't love. Has the true family business vibe. Makes me smile every time I eat there.
google avatar

Chee K.

Yelp
This place is so close to my house but I've never gone. I'm so glad I've gone last night. It's a small cafe and at first I was wondering if we had made a good choice because it was empty except one table. But after I left, I knew i'd come back and try other items. They have your typical Hawaiian staples, kalua pork, loco moco, teriyaki chicken. I tried the mahi mahi and it was great. Nice firm fish with a lightly flaked salt and a hint of garlic. It came with macaroni salad and a scoop of rice. The noodles seemed a little over cooked but maybe that's how it's done. I'm not an expert on mac salad. I tried my husband's kalua pork and it was so tasty! The chef was really nice even though she was the only one there and they were starting to get busy. The food took a while to come out but that's understandable when there's only one waiter and one chef. I do wish the prices were a couple bucks cheaper, but it does taste like you're getting good quality ingredients. I want to go back and try their desserts, they all sound amazing.
google avatar

Kimber B.

Yelp
6 orders for $115 were far less food than expected, and the flavor was just not there. Small servings and very unsatisfying. Only 5 prawns, some broccoli and spaghetti noodles with garlic for $20? Come on.
google avatar

S. O.

Yelp
Probably the most authentic Hawaiian food restaurant in Portland/Vancouver area. Poi, lomi salmon, kalua pig, laulau, and chicken long rice -- all winners. If that's not enough, the shaved ice is great. Only criticism is no more chili water or raw onions -- overall outstanding
google avatar

Steve H.

Yelp
We had dinner there, 7 of us. The food was wonderful as usual, I have the teriyaki beef. Cheyenne was a server and she did an outstanding job, 5 gold stars to her also.
google avatar

Kim M.

Yelp
Waimea and Milliana platters for dinner. YUM! Grub Hub delivery was fast and food was still warm. Everything was great. Would order from there again!!
google avatar

Pablo V.

Yelp
I ordered the Teriyaki chicken which was delicious, rice was great but the macaroni was a little salty. Either than that the portions for the price was a great deal. I will definitely be back to try something new.
