After visiting Mary Ann's bakery, we wanted something to drink. Found OhLa Tea from a quick search here. I thought it was funny that the GPS simply told us to pull in to a parking lot...and once we got there the shopping center looked abandoned. This pandemic is really taking a toll on a lots of businesses. So please do what you can to keep yourself and others safe. Anyway, we thought it was closed but thank goodness we saw the huge "we are open" sign. So we got excited to try what they have to offer.
RESTAURANT:
Due to the pandemic, a lot of the business are having to put their furniture away and so upon entering this joint, it does not look very inviting. The counter was bare and only have a place for you to order. Behind that is their menu on screen. The décor is minimal and gives off that Japanese feel with the long wooden benches, and shelves with I believe Japanese treats and the adorable wall art of boba girls in kimono-looking dresses. There is a nice size rest room. There are also printed menu on the counter and on the plexiglass. I don't recall a sign saying they are not serving food. Overall, the place is small, but really cute.
SERVICE:
Again, we came here without reading the reviews since we were 2 blocks away. I regret that now. There was only one other customer there and the lady behind the counter offered us no acknowledgement. When it was my turn, the worker's back was on me and I did not want to be rude so I just waited for her to turn around. She exuded unhappy energy and I can tell she's not friendly. I quickly just ordered only one boba tea because I wanted to get the heck out of there. After a few minutes, I decided to order an egg waffle dessert for my son and right away (with an extra dose of disdain) she cuts me off and said we are not serving food. Which is too bad because I got excited to see that they just didn't sell boba drinks. I ended up ordering another drink. And despite my efforts to sound gracious, that lady was still like bleh.
FOOD:
We ordered strawberry fruit tea with rainbow jelly and a taro milk tea with boba. Their cups are tall and super slender, which I did not like so much because I just know it will move around in my car cup holder and it did! But, they have a removable, like a coffee lid which a cute hear shape stopper on the sipping end which my son and I thought that was adorable. And I'm sure the cup can be reused. Anyway, the fruit tea drink was light and refreshing...although it did not taste 100% like strawberries, it tasted more like lychees. The white colored jelly also tasted like lychee. The jelly were good but I found them a bit too firm, like they had been in the fridge for awhile. Then on to the taro milk drink. Side note: taro is my all time fav. And this one is definitely not one of them. First, it was a bit on the warm side. And although at first the drink was ok, I found that there's like this weird salty sensation left in my mouth after each sip. I can't explain if it's from the milk or the boba but it was not a sweet, creamy taste. It's so weird to describe but all I have to say is that I had wayyy better taro elsewhere. So sad about the Egg Waffle. They looked really good and I know my son would've loved it.
Overall, this visit was just as disappointing as it was spontaneous. I'm sure that this place was much better pre-COVID. But reading past reviews leads me to believe that the same worker have the same unapproachable attitude. Customer service is huge! And sometimes, even if the product is mediocre, you tend to be loyal because the excellent service makes you feel royal. Which is too bad because I would love to come back for those egg waffles. But I'm sure I'll manage.
