The 15 Essential Regional Foods of the Pacific Northwest | Eater

"A Bellingham shop that exemplifies how teriyaki plates—sticky, grilled, soy-sweet chicken served over rice—have become a widespread Pacific Northwest grab-and-go lunch option, found from Seattle to smaller northern towns." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Got the Sunset roll. Salmon, Alvarado, and cream cheese. Very good. Looks like actual salmon and taste fresh. Goes well with white rice. Will come again. Has bento box specials. Might come back to try those. Service is prompt. Single server as far as I can tell. Interior looks as if it is meant to be like fast food. Hardwood chairs and tables. Meant to eat fast and go I think.

Google
Kinda OP for what you get. Service was also kind of mid but I did show up late. Would probably try somewhere else next time I’m in town. 33$ for what you see here.

The food here always tastes fresh and delicious, especially their sushi. The crunch roll is just insanely good! It's always my go to place when I want Japanese food in Bellingham!

Google
Simply the best sushi in Bellingham. The menu is full of sushi and many other entrée. The teriyaki chicken is wonderful. My wife loves the sushi, and I love the bento boxes. Great customer service and exceptionally friendly. It's truly a favorite in Bellingham.

Robert Klein

Google
Best teriyaki in Bellingham. Not cheap, not the most convenient hours. But they have brown rice and good sushi and sides. They actually have a grill and they don't drown it in sauce. If everyone was like this, teriyaki wouldn't be dying.

Charles Tenall

Google
Some of the best teriyaki I've had. Fast and friendly service. Side note, their online menu pricing is outdated. Hana is less expensive by a few dollars and is on the same level.

Phil

Google
Nice spot for a quick and filling lunch. They have a wide selection on the menu from teriyaki, rolls, sushi, and noodles. The lunch menu has combo options to add gyoza or rolls to the main dish. The service was very friendly and efficient. I’ll be back for their chicken Yakisoba.

Google
One of the best!! Oldest teriyaki and Sushi restaurant in Whatcom County!! Awesome family business with pride in their food.. Andrew is awesome! His Sushi is amazing and FRESH!! The teriyaki sauce is the best you can taste it! Quick friendly staff!

Yelp
I placed an order for carry out and they had it ready for me when I arrived 10 minutes later. We got the sushi bento box and a beef teriyaki. The goyza in the bento box were delightfully crisp and I really enjoyed the sushi rolls. The beef teriyaki was on the saltier side but very flavorful. I enjoyed the teriyaki sauce it came with. Overall, a pretty solid teriyaki joint!

Yelp
Popped in while my car was getting new tires and asked to be seated by an outlet to charge my phone and was given a perfect seat. The waitress was very friendly and sweet. They were out of green tea which was odd so I had a dr pepper instead, I got miso soup and the sunrise roll i believe. The soup was good no tofu or seaweed in mine. The roll I chose takes 15 min to cook which was great cause I wasn't in a rush, when it came out it was on foil and the rice stuck to the foil so it was difficult to ear but it was really good I would get it again. I walked in right when they opened and one table was already seated and about 4 other tables arrived when I was there. The bentos seem spendy but I'd bring my kids and share one and this roll again. the soda machine seemed out of place I thought I had to get up and get my own but the waitress did it instead

Yelp
Well, I'm not certain if it's because I'm so hungry, but oh my goodness this place is delicious!. I walked in and was seated promptly, sat down to do some work and all of a sudden my food showed up, which didn't even give me much time to finish my work. As you know, I am chicken teriyaki all the way and I loved that this came with no sauce so I could put it on myself. It is a great soy and ginger mix. My server was very attentive, and the location was quiet. But only 5 other groups so not busy by any stretch. I will be back next time in this area.

Yelp
I had an itch to get some good teriyaki and someone told me this is the best in Bellingham. Well, I wasn't disappointed! It scratched the itch. The server we had was professional and friendly and happy to answer questions. She also checked in on us a good amount so we didn't feel neglected. The space is somewhat small but I didn't feel crowded. The big windows let in a lot of light and the plants outside give some ambiance. Now... for the winner... the food! The chicken teriyaki and gyoza combo was exactly what I wanted. The gyoza came with a sauce of some sort that is house made. It tasted amazing and I even asked for more because I could just pour that over everything! The teriyaki was everything I hoped it would be. I do wish there was more sauce on it but the flavor was spot on. I think this is my new teriyaki place!

Yelp
I came in there yesterday with an Asian exchange student. We were the only ones in the restaurant at the time. We wanted to sit in the back in the comfortable seats and have some privacy away from the bathrooms. The waitress, a skinny girl with tattoos stated we could not sit back there and told us we had to sit upfront. I told her "can't I sit where I want to" she said no that table is reserved for six people. Again, we were the only ones in the restaurant. We planned on having dinner, but instead, we shared one order of sushi. Probably the rudest first impression of this restaurant. Once I explained to my Chinese only speaking friend what had occurred, she was quite surprised as well. We were there approximately 30 minutes and we're still the only patrons. This was at approximately 6 PM. We both agreed that we will never be back. That employee needs to be either fired or completely retrained on how to get repeat customers. This restaurant is far from fine dining. Most of their business is to go from what I saw. It's hard enough to park being next to IHOP. But to treat customers like that it makes it very easy to find someplace else to eat

Yelp
I just got to town for a week of work and was craving some stir fry. I found this place within walking distance of my hotel. I was immediately seated and given a menu and water. I asked a few questions and decided on the chicken stir fry, spicy, with a side salad instead of rice. I was amazed at how fast the order came out, the restaurant was about 1/4 full. Food was awesome! I will be back during my stay! Prices are very fair and the restaurant was nice and clean.

Yelp
Excellent food service and ambiance! Great spot and always great options any time of day! Any roll any bento always great options really enjoy this location as well!

Yelp
Disappointing experience with this place. The takeout was both overpriced and low quality. They managed to mess up the order, and the taste was far from satisfying. Given the experience, I won't be returning.

Yelp
Haven't left many positive or negative reviews but this time is worth it. Usually I just dont go back, but this was such a rip off it was worthy of notifying other. Saturday around 1pm, nobody there and I ordered a plate of vegetable yakisoba. It came out very quick but what I got work for $20 was a small amount of noodles that had a tiny bit of cabbage in it and I believe one very very tiny piece of broccoli and some rice. There were no vegetables in it and the portion for $20 of just noodles is ridiculous. I understand the cost of things have gone up but this is absolutely just a rip off.

Yelp
This is a great place to come whether you are a hard core sushi lover or simply want a change of pace from your typical meals. I have one adventurous eater (6 year old) that loves trying new things. He's had the octopus and and fried shrimp...which is something I wouldn't normally eat. My 14 year old and I are much less adventurous but we always find something that we find delicious. My 14 year old would never try sushi but we went there and found they have a teriyaki chicken roll. So he could get the "sushi experience " while staying in his comfort zone. My 6 year old and I love the crunchy bellingham rolls and California rolls (I know I know...not real sushi) but...but when my 14 year old asked if they would make his teriyaki roll crunchy...they gladly went off the menu and made it up for him. That's great service! This is a great spot whether you are adventurous or boring...and one of the few places that has something for every pallet in my family!

Yelp
Never a bad dish here! The food is always served fresh and/or hot, and it's evident that quality ingredients are being used. Staff are also friendly and attentive, which also makes for a great dining experience. Best sushi in Bellingham, for sure!

Yelp
Love ordering the chicken teriyaki - they are so friendly and always do such a great job We have been going here for years & the service is always the same

Yelp
We came here on a Sunday evening, with so many other places closed on Sundays or not open for dine-in, Oishii seemed like a good option. The staff offered a friendly greeting and seated us across from the kitchen door. Bentos are a Japanese tradition and fit exactly what we were looking for. Our meals came with dumplings and a salad, perfect servings and nicely prepared. The sushi was well-prepared and tasty. The bathrooms were clean (always a plus). We will definitely come back to try other items on the menu.

Yelp
Yummy rolls it so good even my doggy ate it he grew hands and legs and dined with me because it was so good looking and tasting

Yelp
Took a while to get seated despite there being a lot of tables empty. Our food took a while to arrive , the chicken teriyaki was slightly rubbery and not so tender, the teriyaki sauce was watery and overly sweet, the sushi was underwhelming, the sashimi didn't taste fresh. Overall overpriced, and underwhelming.

Terry S.

Yelp
Just drive on by this place ! I had the Broccoli Beef. It was almost inedible ! I make broccoli beef at home and it is ten times better than this dog food. The beef was ok and the rice was ok, but, the broccoli was wayyy overcooked. Not just a little, it was terrible. The sauce was watery, not like a sauce should be. I also ordered an appetizer of 8 filled dumplings. I can't remember the dishes actual name. They were ok but cast $9.00 for eight. The total bill was just under $30.00 ! You can get a steak dinner for that, absolutely ridiculous !! The other Asian food places in Ferndale are much, much, better. And would cost you less ! I will never go back to this place, never !

Yelp
The food was actually one of the best from the Bellingham area that I've tried but the price is too expensive. The location is really hard to get in or out of as well. The workers there were pretty nice and they seem to be doing their best. I got their udon and the golden philli and sunset roll. The sunset roll takes like 15 min-25 min to cook and I don't think it was worth the wait. Their udon was kind of soggy and salty. I'm not sure I'll be coming back again.
google avatar

Yelp
We were pretty excited to try this place because we like both teriyaki and sushi very much. Maybe my expectations were a little high but we found the food to be just okay. My disappointment came from the food value in comparison with the price. It seemed a bit expensive for the quality of the sushi. The teriyaki was very good however and I would return for that. We thought our server was very nice and patient with us. It seemed like only two employees were working and both were efficient and friendly. They have a help wanted sign up and they need it. I'm sure those two were beat at the end of the day, nice job guys!
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
Ok choice if you are looking for a good variety to choose from. Chicken seemed to be boneless thigh with lots of fat. Rice was yummy and the California rolls rocked. Yakisoba was overcooked and on the sweet side. Staff were attentive and friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
We love Oishii. The food is amazing, and the food is always fresh. Really good customer service. We always go there.
google avatar

Yelp
I love the sushi here so much!! So far it's the best I've had in Bellingham, especially when chef Andy? (I think that's his name) is working. Try the baked sushi!! The sunset and lava roll are so goooood :) I get them every time, but have yet to be disappointed by any of the specialty rolls. Friendly and fast service, (without affecting quality). I come here so often because it has never let me down! Thank you guys!

Yelp
This place has become one of our regular go-to's .. why? Consistent high quality of food and the waitress here in my opinion is one of the best in Bellingham. She is attentive to ALL of her customers, friendly, fast and has a great attitude! I go here with my husband as well as teenage kids and we all love it here..the only bad thing is they are closed on Sunday.. but we learned our lesson and now remember this. Price is fair for what you get /quality and quantity. Restrooms are even clean and well stocked.
google avatar

Yelp
Oishii Teriyaki is a great little quaint place that has some yummy teriyaki and friendly service. I like their Chicken Teriyaki combo with gyoza, and the coconut shrimp appetizer is delicious, too! They can make turn up the heat on your entree or make it as mild as you'd like. Great menu with lots of things to try!
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered the Golden Phili Roll $8.99 (Philadelphia Roll, Tempura Battered & Deep-Fried, Topped w/ Eel Sauce) It was very small for a $9 dish. The wasabi was good but very little was given and only one soy sauce packet. The Ginger smelled of mold. After one bite, I decided to not eat the ginger. The roll was delicious but the quantity was very small. I was disappointed in the small size. Overall, I would rate this as a mediocre purchase as $9.78 should have got me a decent meal, there should have been more wasabi and soy sauce, and the ginger was super old.

Yelp
I'll start off by saying the wait staff are very friendly and courteous. Appetizer: egg rolls. 2 for $5. These are out of the freezer section from the local Costco. I expect a place like this to make their own egg rolls and not deep fry some frozen ones from the freezer. Sad. Entree: chicken teriyaki, white rice, and salad. The entree came out and the temperature was barely like warm. Like they had made the place 1 hour ago and it was sitting out on the counter. Not even under a heat lamp. Rice was meh. Below avg. salad was poor. Clumps of iceberg of a low quality variety and no dressing. $12. Chicken didn't taste bad once I had them reheat the plate. You would think they would give me a new plate or put the chicken on the skillet and heat it up. Give me a fresh hot scoop of rice. Nope - throw it in the microwave on the plastic plate for 30 seconds. I won't come here again. To conclude: the wait staff and server were very nice but the actual food was below average.

Yelp
My 92 year old mom and I love to order the Bento box, service is always friendly and the ambience is cozy.

Yelp
Don't waste your money. I have had their teriyaki a couple years back and it was decent.... BUT the sushi I was just served was awful and a disgrace to those who love sushi. The waiter was pressuring us to order when we barely got a chance to look at the menu, when we kindly told her we weren't ready... three times. The SUSHI, I don't know what was wrong with it but as soon as we saw it we knew it wasn't going to be great. We couldn't even finish it because of how it tasted and the quality of ingredients/fish. The salmon looked weird and tasted comparable to something I would feed my cat. We ended up having to bring our check up to the front due to our waiter passing us while we were patiently waiting. The only genuinely nice gesture I felt from our waiter was when it was time for us to pay of course. She asked how everything was, and we told her that it wasn't great.. She thought we were joking, but we weren't. Then finally we saw our way out. I won't be coming back anytime soon.

Tyler R.

Yelp
Great food will be coming back again. Staff was friendly, the sushi chef was awesome.
google avatar

Everett S.

Yelp
Waste of money. Asked over phone if they made fried tofu teriyaki, they said it's not a menu item but they can definitely make it to order with some rice and salad like the other teriyaki entrees. It was a pickup over so I just grabbed the food and drove off but wish I had looked at it while I was inside. Paid nearly 15 bucks for barely fried completely dry tofu with zero sauce and white rice. Pretty much inedible because it was just flavorless tofu blocks. Their spring rolls are clearly frozen from a grocery store as well. Could've made everything I received in that 21 dollar order at home for 5 bucks from winco and it probably would've tasted better.

Yelp
I love teriyaki and my husband loves sushi so we went looking for a place that has both and ended up at Oishii. It's a rather unassuming little place in an awkward strip mall off of Bakerview. It shares parking with IHOP and unfortunately the parking lot is very crowded and difficult to maneuver in but we found a spot and headed inside. The restaurant is very tastefully decorated but tiny inside, lucky for us we came early and there was only one other table of customers. We ordered the Green Tiger roll and hubby wanted stir-fry and I got teriyaki chicken with gyosa. It took a while for our order to arrive but I quickly realized why- there was a huge to-go order placed before our order went in. Apparently these guys do a fantastic take out business and I can see why! The food is freaking awesome! The Green Tiger roll was excellent- 8 pieces of succulent avocado covered Krab, tempura shrimp and sticky rice, topped with eel sauce...mmmmmm My Teriyaki Chicken was delicious, perfectly cooked, marinated in salty, sweet teriyaki and served with sticky rice, salad and 4 pieces of savory pork pot stickers. Probably one of the best teriyaki meals I've had in Whatcom County. Hubby's stir-fry was also excellent, super fresh vegetables and lots of chicken quickly fried in a mild teriyaki sauce. His only complaint was that it needed more heat (he likes the spicy peppers). Maybe next time we'll bring Sriracha We will be back, I want to try everything!!!!
google avatar

Joshua P.

Yelp
It was good. Not great. Not cheap for lunch time. There was not one thing that I was like, wow that's really good. Server was nice. Would go back if someone asked to meet there, but probably wouldn't pick it.
google avatar

Paul P.

Yelp
I had a group of 5 and we ordered $180 of sushi - way too much. The food was good and fresh. The problem was the speed as it took 1/2 hour for the first dish to come out despite a practically empty restaurant.
google avatar

Anne N.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to get sushi. :) The waitress usually knows my order. I'm typing more words now because Yelp wants more than two sentences for a review I guess so sorry for this useless information at the end.
google avatar

Suzanne P.

Yelp
Great service and excellent food! Way to go Hanna and April!!!

Mark M.

Yelp
Very good. Yumsters. Chicken Teriyaki is my go to. Always fresh. I have been there probably 7 to 10 times it is definitely worth it.
google avatar

Tessa W.

Yelp
I love this place! I frequently go here and get the vegetable yakisoba to go and it's always so good! The people that work there are so kind, and the food is amazing 100% of the time. I just moved out of Bellingham but I still make the 20 minute drive to order from Oishii :)
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
As someone who loves sushi and eats it a lot. This is some low quality sushi. The fish wasn't fresh, the rice tasted stale, and the portions were so tiny. Spent $50 on specials rolls and it was very little of sushi.
google avatar

Yelp
We're up North visiting Birch Bay and decided to go grab some lunch. Teriyaki and Sushi (best of both worlds) why not give them a try. We walk in and wait to be seated (2 other diners in the entire restaurant, they weren't busy) and the waitress drops off menus. They proudly display that they've won an award for "Best Tasting Teriyaki", all right, we made a good choice. 10 minutes later the waitress arrives and ask for our order. I asked her a few questions about the Bento Boxes and she was unsure what it comes with. I ordered the Bento Box (chicken teriyaki, gyoza, salad and rice) $8.99 and the boys had the lunch special $5.99 chicken teriyaki bowl. (And, pepsi was $2.49 for an 8oz cup and non-refillable, and if it was refillable, waitress never came and asked) I've had lots of chicken teriyaki before and my goodness, did they really win an award for Best Teriyaki? Because the teriyaki was as dry and tasteless as a shoe. (never ate a shoe and there's a reason for that) There was no teriyaki sauce on it. The chicken bowl that my boys had was rice, salad, and the chicken on top. My 9 year old who loves food could not finish his food, it was sooo dry. They had teriyaki sauce on the table and we added it to our chicken but it was still unrecoverable. The portions were so small, even in my bento box. (see photo I posted) It was the same portion size as the lunch special for $5.99. It wasn't worth the money I spent ... we've had better Teriyaki from a supermarket deli. This place get's a NO STAR but I can't write a review without giving it a star. We were still hungry cause we couldn't eat it, so we went to Burger King! Save your money, you're better off eating at the IHOP across the parking lot from them. I agree with the other review, Oishii Kunai (not delicious)

Yelp
Well, we have passed this place many times and today was the day to have a taste. We got there right at 11 AM and were greeted with a warm welcome and a lovely, "Hey ya'll!" Music to this Southern girl's ears. Husband ordered a Sapporo beer and I got a Korean Hite beer. I love trying international beers every chance I get. We got two orders of the tuna sashimi to start while we looked over the Sushi offerings. We agrees on the Emperor Roll and the Sea Dragon Roll. The sashimi was fresh, pink and oh so tender--best sashimi I've had in quite awhile. Just about the time we popped the last piece in--here come the rolls. An absolutely beautiful presentation and just as tasty. One more beer ordered for me and we dug in. Fresh and tasty is all I can say. We're not dessert people but I couldn't help but order a Spider Roll, it's always a favorite for me. It came out and was simple and fresh and perfectly cooked. This delightful place just celebrated their 26th year in business and I can understand why...GREAT service, TASTY sashimi, BEAUTIFUL sushi and just a wonderful place to relax & enjoy. Noodles will be my next try as they sounded quite delicious on the menu.
google avatar

Jack W.

Yelp
Best in town spicy chicken teriyaki. The rolls are really good too. The only issue is I'm not a huge fan of their new eco to-go boxes. While I really appreciate they are trying (good on being rid of the styrofoam) - these paper based ones suck the moisture out of the chicken and rice. They need to upgrade to the corn/cane based eco togo boxes so food stays fresh long enough to get it home to enjoy it.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
As far as sushi goes in Bellingham, this place ain't bad. For most other cities, this place is seriously lacking uniqueness. Pros? Large menu Chicken teriyaki is on par Lovely deals on beer sometimes... like $1.99 for a good bottle Cons? Service is seriously lacking Sushi is underwhelming
google avatar

Cherry C.

Yelp
The teriyaki was delicious and the sushi was amazing, definitely recommend. Only place that was opened in the afternoon that wasn't closing at 2:30.
google avatar

Carole T.

Yelp
Convenient location.... "fast food" outlet with comfortable clean table area. Friendly accommodating staff BUT too expensive for the amount & quality of food served. Best was the "bowl" by far ... had California Roll & Snow Special Roll; both lacking in quality & flavor.
google avatar

Janine L.

Yelp
My first time here. I was craving sushi after work and this was the closest place. They did not dissapoint. Sushi was excellent. They had a huge selection of specialty rolls. So glad there is a good sushi place only a mile from my work.

Yelp
I'm not sure what restaurant these terrible reviews are for. Maybe the last 6 times I came here it magically transformed into a delicious delight! First off let me say that I have been to many, many Sushi restaurants. I lived in LA for 10 years and have had the pleasure to eat at several five star sushi restaurants. The freshness and quality of the rolls I've tasted here rivals any sushi I've ever had. It's pleasantly surprising! I've tried Kuru Kuru, Zen, Maki, and Jun Sushi and the sushi here puts them all to shame! I haven't been here for dinner on the weekends and I could see how if it got crowded that there could be a wait. It's just a small place. My service has always been prompt and courteous and friendly. Give this place a try if you like fresh, quality sushi, sashimi, and tempura. The presentation of the combo plates is appealing too. PS... They don't charge extra for wasabi or ginger. It does sometimes show as a line on your bill, but there is no charge. Also, I'm laughing at the person who said go to IHOP instead and then ended up at Burger King...Okay, you go to Burger King... I'll be over here eating all the tasty sushi! :D

Yelp
It's a run of the mill teriyaki and Japanese spot. Perhaps it is a little nicer than many but don't be thinking higher end sushi bar. Oishii is in a strip mall, appears to be run by an Asian family, and serves exactly what you think they serve. And you know what? The food tastes exactly how you would expect it to taste. Mostly salty, the miso seemed to be made from powder and was completely devoid of any tofu, seaweed, onions, or anything else except the grainy bits at the bottom. Gyoza were reasonable but we're likely precooked and then flash fried to temp for service. The teriyaki was very standard and unremarkable in any way but that's neither good or bad, just unremarkable. The rolls were round and cut into short lengths as they should be. The seasoned rice was very nice and the rice itself was fresh, as was the wrapper. In fact, the roll was the best part of the whole dinner. Props for a good tuna roll. Overall, I say 3 stars. Middle of the road place with good rolls and decent teriyaki. They could make fresh miso and that would help them a bit. I will consider returning.

Yelp
I have been here a few time and have always had excellent food! I normally get sushi to eat and it is always amazing! Everything tastes fresh and is skillfully prepared. The restaurant is on the small side so it isn't great for large groups. My only main issue with this place is the servers. They are always very nice and welcoming but seem to know nothing about the menu and are very slow. The other day we went in and sat down, we were the only two customers in there. We were seated and waited 10min for the waitress to come and get our drink orders. Another 10 min and our drinks appeared. Sushi takes awhile to make so that wait was understandable. But to get refills or extra napkins took awhile. But the food is well worth the wait so we will happliy deal with the slow service . :)

Yelp
Had the veggie udon noodles. Super good. Broth was super good surprsingly for veggie broth. Added udon spice as per the servers recommendation. Highly recommended. Good amounts of veggies and noodles were extraordinary

Yelp
Loved the emperor and firecracker roll ! Had good service. This is my go to for sushi.
