Best Restaurants in Hilton Head and Bluffton, South Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"When opening Okàn, chef Bernard Bennett hoped his restaurant would change the conversation about African American foods. “The expressions on my dishes go back to West Africa, where many enslaved people came from, and take a trip through the Caribbean and onto America,” he says. Okàn offers dishes like jollof rice, curried oxtails, peri peri chicken, Caribbean callaloo, okra with harissa paste, and shrimp sauteed in a fragrant garlic and ginger sauce." - Lynn and Cele Seldon

16 Hottest New Restaurants to Check Out in Savannah, June 2024

"Ọkàn isn’t in Savannah, but it’s only a 38-minute drive to find innovative examples of West African cuisine in an upscale, yet comfortable, dining room. Chef Bernard Bennett’s food truck of the same name often traveled to Savannah, so residents might already be familiar with the flavors from the 2023 James Beard Emerging Chef semifinalist. Standout dishes on the restaurant menu include corn pudding with blue crab, okra roasted in harissa, jerk goat with grilled pineapple, and callaloo in coconut milk — for those who like extra spice, ask for the housemade mango habanero sauce." - Kiki Dy

Ọkàn to Open in Bluffton, South Carolina, as a Destination for West African Cuisine - Eater Carolinas

"Ọkàn will focus on the foods and flavors that came to the Lowcountry through enslaved Africans forced into the fields and kitchens along the South Carolina coast. The restaurant offers a variety of dishes that trace back to West Africa and travel through the Caribbean onto America, including starters like corn pudding with blue crab, okra roasted in harissa, and pumpkin seed dip with benne seed crackers, as well as entrees such as curried oxtails, peanut stew, and duck and oyster gumbo. Chef Bernard Bennett emphasizes an upscale but approachable experience with a bar that focuses on classic cocktails with a rum twist." - Erin Perkins

This was genuinely one of the best meals that I have ever had. After eating here, it’s hard to think about spending money at other restaurants when we have this gem so close by. I would like to work my way through every item on the menu, because I have yet to have something that did not expand my mind. That is the type of experience this is—you will taste things you have never imagined before. It started for our group with the suya skewers—tender skewers of beef cheek with mango that were juicy, tangy, and delicious. From there we all decided to share our entrées, for which we had the curry goat, lamb ribs, oxtail, and hanger steak. Every component of each dish had a story to tell. I found myself voraciously chowing down on the greens that came with my oxtail, along with the mushrooms and rice, which somehow rivaled the meat itself for flavor. The outstanding dish was the curry goat, which was a warm embrace of coconut, peas, and tender meat. We enjoyed it all so much that we forgot to take pictures! For desert, we all split the chocolate coffee cake, basque cheesecake, and pineapple tart. My personal favorite was the cheesecake, which did not taste like anything I have had before. I struggle to describe it, but my mind’s eye sees caramel, apple, guava, and cream. My brother said it best—every dish on the menu would be the award-winning special at another restaurant. Okan should be at the top of your list for Bluffton restaurants, whether you are a tourist or a local.

Don't sleep on this place, Bluffton. We came in to town to visit some family, and decided to try this place. The food was excellent for flavors and presentation. The Coco (sp?) Bread was dangerously good. We could've filled up on that alone. Lobster curry was mild but awesome. The flank steak was cooked perfect. I would come here regularly, if I lived in town.

Okan has great appetizers and their bartenders really know their stuff!! My authentic rum punch was solid as compared to what I get when I'm in Haiti. The chef and staff are really friendly and it's a comfortable, clean, family environment.

Bernard and team have truly brought something special to Bluffton and the low country. Tantalizing my taste buds from the Sauvignon blanc, oyster appetizer, and all the way to the pork shank that rocked my world. Don’t be like me and take so long to try this place. You won’t regret it.

Beautiful restaurant with outdoor dining option that is dog friendly. Waiter couldn't have been more polite. Manager was very hospitable and even brought bug spray for me. Now to the star of the evening--the food! The oxtail is incredible..the okra was grilled perfect and underneath had the most delicious red sauce. The lamb ribs were also very good

This restaurant is our new go to for brunch! The ambiance and service was excellent. Everything we ordered was delicious and very flavorful. All 3 of us agreed that the blue grits are the best grits we have ever had! The Channa omelette and Collard Green Benedict were delicious! The Puff Puffs were to die for! We can’t wait to return for lunch and dinner!

Soooo glad we made the drive out from Hilton Head Island to try Okan! Hands down the best meal of our trip and one of the best meals we’ve had in a very long time. Everything was uniquely delicious but the goat curry and jollof rice were our favorites! The hint of the scotch bonnet pepper in the goat curry was perfection. After dinner we walked up to their ice cream window and enjoyed some home made ice cream. Our daughter who always gets strawberry LOVED the butter pecan and so did we! Can’t wait to come back in the future. ❤️

I chose this restaurant based on the high ratings and an intriguing menu—but what a letdown. There was a huge gap between expectation and reality. Service: It took 50 minutes to get our food—and there were fewer than 10 people in the restaurant at lunchtime. No excuse for that kind of wait. Food: • Cornbread: Just… no. It had an odd, almost plantain-like flavor (if that’s what it was?), but not in a good way. It was also overcooked and slightly burnt. • Djon Djon with Shrimp: Word of warning—do not order this if you’re on a date unless you want to look like you’ve been possessed. Your mouth turns black. The mushrooms were flavorful, and the dish itself was okay, but the presentation and side effects? Yikes. • Shrimp: I love head-on shrimp, but these were so overcooked they were impossible to peel. Do you eat the shell or just give up? I tried… and gave up. Overdone and dry. A little fat or oil during cooking would’ve gone a long way. • Fonia Bowl with Jerk Chicken: Probably the best of the bunch, but still just meh. Maybe a 6/10. Add it all up—slow service, disappointing food, and an $80 lunch tab—and it’s a hard pass from me.
