Japanese Hotels That Defy Their Reputation

"Tadao Ando’s masterful eye informs every inch of Setouchi — patient, quintessentially Japanese cleanliness and profoundly empty stretches of space induce a reverent consideration of the materials at hand. It’s never overbearing, but it does inspire a welcome silence; gazing at the abstract rock garden or through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, you’ll most definitely feel the frenetic activity of the mind slow to match your surroundings." - Mark Fedeli

Amazing stay in a beautiful hotel designed by Tadao Ando. Service, pool and breakfast were amazing. The room was really great but a tiny bit disappointed by the bathroom which was a bit weird and not so beautiful especially compared to the rest. Lunch was also so-so. We didn’t have dinner there but regretted the lack of simple options (only a very expensive one).

Fantastic experience in one and only architecture masterpiece attached with local delicacies. | Aonagi resort is the hidden jewel in Setouchi area, a must go when you visit around Shikoku, or even if you’re considering visiting west Japan broadly. |Tadao Ando, a global maestro who has won the Pritzker architecture award has built this unique 7 rooms all suite hotel. Every details has magnificent eye from the architect, and intellectual journey to seek that is already an adventure. |The services are that of 5 star hotel in any large city, and the food is just one and only. The sashimi provided to us was very original yet traditional, and the thickness of its cut and focus on details has opened the door for the definition of yellowtail for us. |Also very impressed by the passions to detail of the sommelier Imazu. His combination with bottled sparkling tea and Georgian ancient wine paired with traditional Japanese was just a series of wonderful surprises. |Definitely a recommend looking forward going again.

If you are looking for a special experience in Japan then book a stay at this wonderful and unique hotels. The building is a stunning architectural mix with the surrounding countryside. The suite we stayed in had two rooms and was a brilliant experience for my family. The staff are very friendly once you can get past their formality :). They are very expert at making you feel like a welcome guest. The Chef is outstanding and without a doubt the best selection Kaiseki menus over the 4 nights we stayed. Every night was a different menu and delicious. Brett was our excellent host bridging the gap with our limited Japanese with perfect English. We loved it and will be back for sure

Extraordinary architecture, excellent service and good food. The in-room onsen has flat bed which is very relaxing I could stay there for a whole day. The hotel only has 7 rooms, very quiet and peaceful.

Excellent stay! The building designed by Ando is spectacular. The view and sunset from the room was amazing. Service, food and the room were top notch. The only down side is the aircon can be a little noisy.

Prior to staying at a luxury ryokan in Dogo Onsen proper (Bettei Oborozukiyo), we decided to check out Setouchi Retreat Aonagi as a means to relax on site and explore Tadao Ando's creation. While there's creativity and uniqueness in the design and aesthetic of the property, it kind of left us cold.... it's a sea of concrete in our eyes. Yes, there are some interesting nooks and crannies that stirred our senses, large windows everywhere let in an abundance of natural light, and the decor was tastefully minimalistic, it still felt as if we were staying in a museum or a European castle rather than a grand and comfortable home. Something to experience once, but not really a place one craves to return - at least in our minds. And given that it's a 25-minute drive away from Dogo Onsen, you really need to be a big fan of Mr. Ando to spend more than a night here.||||Everything about the property was done right. Service is attentive and prompt, the food was very good (not top class but still a memorable experience) and the view of the Seto Inland Sea is Instagram-worthy. We were able to book the one and only Aonagi Suite, which has a massive 170 square meters of living space and is Maisonette-style with the living room having a very tall, double-height ceiling with double-height windows, allowing for breathtaking views and tons of natural light in the room. If there's one nit to pick, it's the lack of a real Onsen bath in the room, which is a bummer. And while many luxury properties in Japan provide a communal or rental Onsen facility (or both), here at Aonagi they offer a Pool with a Sauna and an Onsen Jacuzzi that can be privately rented by guests staying there. Some might like the idea of an Onsen jacuzzi, but we did not. The Onsen experience is supposed to be calm, serene and relaxing; a jacuzzi exudes more of a party atmosphere, which doesn't fit well under this concept. Also, while stylish, the pool and jacuzzi feel like being in a (artificially created) dungeon. I would've much preferred something of an open-air variety, to be honest.||||The other curious aspect of the property is the fact that all guests (other than those staying at the Aonagi Suite) are forced to dine in the main restaurant. Given that it has "Retreat" to its name, and caters to celebrities and the wealthy, I would've thought that Aonagi would offer private dining - if not in one's own room, then at least in private "koshitsu" rooms. We knew this going in, so we were thankful that the Aonagi Suite was available for booking for the date of our intended stay.||||Dinner was excellent, but how could it not be? Seafood caught in the Seto Inland Sea are world famous in quality, and everything from the local Red Sea Bream, Spanish Mackerel and White Horse Head were fantastic. The executive chef was recently transferred to the property from one of the sister properties (Iki Retreat Kairi Murakami), and still maintains connections to Iki Island that allows him access to amazing fish, namely Longtooth Groupers and Blackthroat Seaperch (the latter is among our favorite fish and a major delicacy in Japan.) The Iyo Beef Filet was also tender and flavorful for such a lean cut, and the "Takikomi Tai Meshi" (Rice cooked in a pot mixed with Red Sea Bream) was spectacular. In a way, out overall experience was different than what we expected going in. We were unsure about the quality of food and service given that much of the attention is directed to the architecture, but these aspects were the definite highlights for us.||||While we appreciate everything that Tadao Ando has accomplished in his lifetime, as a luxury hotel we don't think it works for everyone. It didn't for us. Still, there's a lot to like at Setouchi Retreat Aonagi, and we're glad that we were able to check it out. And if you really like the achitecture, then this property will be an absolute paradise for you.

A great retreat from the busy city life to wind down and relax. The design and architecture is simple yet brilliant. The small amount of rooms ensure a quiet resort with more attention from the friendly, attentive, bilingual staff for every need. Rooms are very big and come with everything needed. Balcony view is very beautiful but it's not easy to see stars as light pollution is still present. The meals served are Japanese style, so people who are not comfortable with Japanese taste will find it bland or not delicious. Otherwise, the food is great and very high class. The private pool is a must; swimming pool, Jacuzzi and sauna. An experience that should not be missed. For people who are planning to tour Matsuyama city, the location of the hotel might be its only drawback to a certain extent. As traveling to the city will take around 30 minutes from the hotel. Otherwise, the location is fantastic. Highly recommended for honeymoons, marriage anniversaries, or couples in general.

We booked 3 months in advance because there’s only 7 units in the whole hotel and they sell out quickly. One has to plan to be extravagant to have considered this hotel and I was. I was not disappointed.

Ando San picked a secluded spot for this piece of work. We heard it was meant to be his personal vacation home so it all made sense. It’s right above a golf course mid mountain so you know you will get a great view. We were glad it wasn’t a tourist attraction compared with the Benesse house we visited on this trip.

||||The service
||Immaculate. Absolute epitome of Japanese customer service one can expect from this price range and reputation.

||||The accommodation
||I can see how it can be orgasmic for Tadao Ando’s fan. I didn’t know about his work until this trip and I have to say I’m impressed and interested to find out more.

||||The meals
||Top notch keiseki but I must say I had better in a much less extravagant place. Try focus on who the architect who built this hotel is and you will give that concession. At least I did.

||||Overall, a very pleasant stay and I look forward to trying out the oval when I talk myself into taking a more sociable holiday.
