Okonomiyaki Shimizu – Osaka - a MICHELIN Guide Restaurant

"The owner-chef runs this tiny, six-seater restaurant by himself. To give his okonomiyaki a light texture, he uses little flour and mixes plenty of cabbage into the batter. He serves his okonomiyaki ‘Shimizu-style’, not cutting it in half but serving it whole so that diners eat from the periphery and thus savour the various states of doneness. Ask for the good value set menu to enjoy crepe-like Yoshokuyaki and Yamaimoyaki made from mountain yam." - Michelin Inspector

Update: I contacted the Michelin Guide and they in fact did REMOVE this restaurant from the guide! So i’m sure to the owner: less foreigners will be coming. Good for you. I applaud michelin for taking this restaurant off, they did not deserve to be on the guide. It’s not about the food it’s about the entire experience and the owner here does not respect that. 悪いと無作法のオーナーシェフもめちゃー悪いのサービスです。 Unfortunately we did not get to try the food here. This review is based on hospitality. Which is 0. If you are a foreigner, I don’t think this a good spot to go to. I’ve been to many restaurants in Japan from Hokkaido to the Coasts of Japan and the countryside and of course the city. This was the WORST hospitality we’ve ever had. I’m not sure how this place is on the michelin guide with the attitude the owner gave us. We came in right when they opened and it was pouring rain outside. As we came in the owner just stared at us… I then spoke in Japanese asking for 4. He decided to just, literally, “shoo” us away. I asked why? There are 5 empty seats. (One woman came in at the same time as us) He just asked us to leave. (Saying he Asked is being nice) We then went out the door to try and figure out where to go since this restaurant is pretty far from other eateries. *Reminding you it’s raining* Probably looking at our phone for a couple minutes. There is only ONE woman inside who came at the same time we did. He came outside to shoo us more and said, “you are in the way, move. You are in the way.” We moved out of the way… next door, which is an apartment building to get out of the rain. We stood there trying to figure out where to go for about 10-15 mins. No new customers came in… I’d like to say his shop website (instagram) doesn’t say anything about reservation only and also doesn’t state anything about reservations on the michelin guide. I even called in advanced but with no answer. Yes. There are only 6 seats BUT it’s Okonomiyaki… it takes 10-15 minutes or less to make and only moments to eat. So yeah, instead of accepting customers- he shoo’ed us away, Like I said before I have been to many restaurants as a foreigner and I do speak japanese…This the only place that looked at us and then told us to leave. A lot of the restaurants i’ve been too are the type where it’s ran by older generation who don’t speak a lick of english and they still accepted us whole heartedly. I have put a formal request to have this place taken off the Michelin Guide. My group and I also went to 2 other Michelin guide spots and they were extremely welcoming and lovely. However, this place just can’t afford foreigners apparently to come and enjoy the food. To add to this- We drove past it on the way back in a taxi (so about 45 minutes to 1 hour from when we tried to go in) Still only 2 people and the first lady was gone, it was 2 new people. So it definitely wasn’t a reservation issue- He simple’s didn’t want our kind.

Like other comments have mentioned, this restaurant is not foreigner friendly. Walked in at about quarter past four o’clock with only two guests sitting at the counter, the owner says the restaurant is fully booked for the night. Not a single guest walked in before 5pm. Don’t waste your time nor money trying to eat at this restaurant.

Good experience. It’s more than okonomiyaki and yakisoba. After visiting museum, you can pick favorite ingredients and eat delicious Japanese food!

Came in with my japanese friend to an empty shop. As soon as we spoke english, the owner rudely refused service. 💢 Don't waste your time. 💢

Bad service. Unfriendly. Not kind. Unwelcoming. No hospitality. Rude owner. Discrimination at its finest. He looked at us and told us to leave.

Small and cosy set up (six seater) with super tasty okonomiyaki, lovely orange wine and a very nice owner! What more can you ask for?

We were told that the restaurant was closed for the day, even though it was way before the closing time, but fair enough considering the place was empty As we walked away other costumers walked in and were served immediately Not a service to deserve a Michelin mention Get over yourself

Very rude owner. Arrived and were told move out of the way no seats available even though there were seats. Maybe no foreigners allowed?
