"“We sat down and said, ‘Let’s make German food cool.’ ”Top Chef Canada finalist Nathan Guggenheimer and his team did just that when he took over the 22-year-old Old Black Forest Restaurant in Lunenburg, N.S. The new Old Black Forest still serves schnitzel and sausages, maultaschen and käsespätzle — but with a twist. “We wanted to bring it into the 21st century,” says Guggenheimer, aka Chef Googs."

Honestly this place is so tasty, since trying it, my mouth waters every time we drive by. It’s dangerous. Well prepared, quality food, satisfying portions and delicious beers. I do like a moister Black Forest cake than their version, but it’s personal taste. Can’t wait to enjoy this delicious food again on the outdoor patio on a sunny day soon!

Mustard with pretzel packed a nice punch! Loved how spicy it was, hits your nose like wasabi. Great main, delicious. Would pass on dessert, black forest cake lacked flavour.

Excellent schnitzel and German beers on tap! Nathan and crew are doing a great job in the region, and their expanded patio will enhance the experience even more!

Food is delicious! We lived in Germany quite a long time and it's amazing. Service was also wonderful although they need a bit of help on busy evenings. We were not in a rush so no impact on our visit. Vielen dank!

We made a reservation and thank goodness all the tables inside were gone. Lots of patio space. Service was good and fast. Food was very good. Comfy home cooking.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've had German food and boy was I in for a treat. Like others have said, the outside doesn't look like much. But the food speaks for itself. We went for the jagerschnitzel (upgraded with kasespaetzle) and the beef stroganoff. The schnitzel was the standout dish and the stroganoff was just as good. Ended the meal with a blackforest cake and apdelstrudel. I enjoyed it, but it was really the mains that I came for. All in all, a good meal. Service was super friendly too. Will have to bring some of my German friends here and try out some other dishes.

Yelp
In a region that traditionally lacks variety of food options, the Old Black Forest Restaurant was an oasis of delicious German fare. We tried the jager schnitzel which was delightful and black forest cake which is not typically my first choice but was delicious here. Would recommend!

Yelp
It's unfortunate that the menu selection is WAY LESS than previous ownership. Quality of food is OK but not exciting. Spaetzle were not as good as before ownership changed. Blackforest cake was good but it's unfortunate it's not made with real "KIRSCH WASSER" I will not be back.

Yelp
Excellent German food. Everything was authentic. Schnitzel (Vienna style), Sauerbraten, spaetzle, gravy. All outstanding. Even the desserts are authentic. The Black Forest cake and strudel were spot on. Wonderful service in a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere. Children are welcome and a menu is available. Excellent service as well. Everything was freshly prepared and sauerkraut is made and purchased from a farm a block away. If you are staying in Lunenberg it is worth a few minutes drive to this not so hidden spot. Do call ahead and make ressies as this restaurant only has a few tables inside. Once weather improves it looks like outdoor seating becomes available. Excellent spot if you tire of the excellent seafood in the area (though seafood options are available here as well).

Yelp
Food is always delicious and always consistent. The service is always great. The multaschen and schnitzel are fabulous and the Black Forest cake is out of this world! Don't miss the Old Black Forest! Update: I went to the Old Black Forest three times during the summer and fall of 2019. It still rocks! No longer open for lunch. It's become very crowded and noisy at night. Be sure to call BARBARA and make a reservation during the summer. Everyone loves The Old Black Forest. The staff is running their legs off keeping up with the crowd, but the food is still delicious and the service is wonderful.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful schnitzel! We sat on the patio in the afternoon sun, it was a little bit hot, but pleasant nonetheless.

Yelp
Okay, the Old Black Forest doesn't have a sea view (or any view at all), and it's not very prepossessing from the outside and it's tiny and humble inside, but none of that really matters. The family here serve the best German food you're going to find outside a large city or Germany itself. We've been coming here for ten years, and over those ten years it has remained our very favourite place to eat out in the Lunenburg area (especially after sailing when you really crave some serious food). We always have the Wiener schnitzel, which ranges from very good to mind-blowingly good. I don't love the vegetables, myself, but the owner is happy to substitute a salad, which comes with a delicious dill dressing. We've brought many people here and they've raved about the food they've had. I'm possibly addicted to the Black Forest Cake, which is homemade and perfect -- light, full of kirsch and cherries and not too sweet. I always give my husband some of my schnitzel so I have room for cake! There's a big patio outside the front of the restaurant which can handle the overflow crowd on busy summer evenings. Barbara, the owner, is friendly and accommodating, and always treats her customers well. The service is attentive without being obtrusive. In the busy season reservations are a must. The restaurant is seasonal, so we look forward to its opening each spring and happily eat there all season until it closes in the late fall.

Yelp
Seriously you need to eat here and get dessert at Lunenburg or Mahone Bay. The outside is nothing special--no great views or anything (unless you like asphalt and trees) and the inside only seats about 25. The deck seats about 12-15. But the food tastes like you're in Munchen. I had the Bratwurst and my companion had the Chicken Schnitzle, both were delicious and we devoured the food in about three minutes. Seriously, stop reading this and go here and start eating.

Yelp
We were going out for a drive around Mahone Bay and Lunenburg and found this restaurant. If you are not hungry just go for the Black Forest Cake and coffee! The food is really good too and good sized portions. I had fish and chips (I know it is English fare) and can't complain. Service was fast and friendly. I definitely recommend this one. To find it go on hwy 3 from Mahone Bay to Lunenburg, it is a the intersection between Maders Cove Road and hwy 3. Maders Cove road is the scenic route from Mahone Bay to Lunenburg (highly recommended).

Yelp
Vibe Restaurant Review - September 8, 2015: Old Black Forest Restaurant - 4/5 Stars Unlike our last review for a restaurant under new management, The Old Black Forest Restaurant has been family-owned and operated by a lovely German couple, Thomas (cook) and Barbara (baker/server) since 1998. Customers appreciate the clean, cozy traditional décor, authentic menu, good home-style cooking and friendly service which account for good reviews from South Shore locals and visitors. Old Black Forest's menu and cooking style are pretty standard fare based on our experience with German restaurants in Canada and abroad. Old favorites, German beer served in traditional mugs, schnitzel, wurst, spätzle, mauftaschen, home-made black forest cake and Vienna apple strudel are all on the menu. Food was freshly prepared, generously portioned, delivered hot and good value. The well-prepared Swiss Schnitzel was under-seasoned for my taste. James thoroughly enjoyed the grilled pork schnitzel and spätzle with its deliciously rich, creamy mushroom sauce. No meal would be complete without trying the black forest cake at a restaurant of the same name - it did not disappoint. The chocolate cake was moist and light, layered with kirsch-soaked cherries and whipped cream that was not too sweet. With so many amazing restaurants in Mahone Bay and Lunenburg, the Old Black Forest Restaurant is a testament to the comfort in knowing what to expect...no surprises here. Open seasonally from early spring to late fall, locals know to reserve in advance to not be disappointed. Lunenburg Vibe

Yelp
Excellent food and service. New to German cuisine, I tried the German sampler trio entree which included maultaschen (kind of like ravioli), spaetzle, sauerbraten, and wiener schnitzel. I put my diet on hold and the serving was still more than I could finish. I especially liked the spaetzle sauce. Never made it to desert. Maybe next time. A great meal!

Yelp
We waited 45 minutes for our food. The portions are huge but there is no seasoning. Very bland . We felt like we were an inconvenience to serve.

Yelp
We had a road trip last year and found this restaurant. Great German food they served. Cake and sausage are must try. Owner are very nice people, feel to ask them for trip tips.

Yelp
The apple crisp was AMAZING! Surprisingly the fish and chips were great, and the beef ravioli was definitely german, but a little bland. Sort of an odd place right off the highway, but worth stopping for the apple crisp alone! Exactly the kind of straightforward German service you might expect! I bet it would be a wonderful winter comfort food place!

Yelp
Another amazing visit to the Old Black Forest Restaurant. The schnitzel with herbed sunflower seed coating was probably the best I ever had and can't get enough of their Spaetzle . The service is excellent with no attitude. It is a family owned place and everything is home made. Can hardly wait to go back few more times this summer.

Yelp
Not fancy, but family owned, family friendly and authentic German fare. We had the sauerbraten and "King Ludwig's Bowl." Both had appropriately piquant sauces over enormous portions. I agree that the Spaetzle was a treat. Comfort food, indeed. As one would hope the Black Forest Cake was delicious... and perhaps surprisingly, so was the Key Lime Pie.

Yelp
We come to this German restaurant every summer and are never disappointed. Reservations are a must as they get very busy in tourist season. he spaetzle here is the best I've had outside of Germany, and the fish, schnitzels and chicken (I never venture beyond these three) are amazing -- no stodginess here -- forget your prejudices about German cooking and enjoy! (PS -- if visiting Lunenburg don't forget to pick up some of the area's fresh (not canned or bottled) sourkraut -- sold in milk cartons in area grocery stores - amazing! They have turnip kraut too -- look for Tancook and Krispy Kraut brands in the refrigerator aisle.

Yelp
Highly recommended! My wife and I had the triple sampler and everything was hot and delicious. We finished the meal by splitting the black forest cake - yum! The restaurant is cozy and relaxed, the service is prompt and efficient. If you like German cuisine or would like to try it, this is an excellent choice.

Yelp
This German retaurant is the best in the area. I checked Yelp and this place was recommended. The reviews are RIGHT. The food is great. The decor goes well with the menu. You cannot go wrong.
