Galveston’s Best Dive Bars | Eater Houston

"This island standard is two bars in one. Molly’s, on the left, features a long bar with plenty of space to talk in private, while Old Cellar bar has its own bartender, jukebox, and a dartboard for those up for a challenge. For the Irish whisky drinkers, both have plenty of options to choose from. Be sure to ask for Snow, one of the city’s beloved bartenders."

We spent a lovely evening here on Sunday the 28th September. Great bar, great people, great atmosphere. Ps if you’re reading this from the bar and you remember……there was a young lady in later in the evening who was an expert in birds. My wife would like to connect with her. Can you make this possible? Thank you.

Not sure if this is Molly's or Old Cellar. The same place? This is a nice little bar, it's New Year's Eve and there are almost no people here. My partner and I can't figure this out. Good place, one star deducted because no whipped cream on the Irish coffee.

Very beautiful 1800s home. Awesome outdoor space for bands. Basically a self serve spot. You go into the lower space to pick up drinks. No food during my visir.

Sadly, hopelessly permanently closed. I had 20 years of good memories here. Now, onwards to Murphys.

Guy working the bar was nice. But the place has a bad smell to it of mildew and mold. The drink coaster even had mold on it. Not great!

Great bartenders, great drinks. A wonderful place to stop in, get drinks, and have conversations.

Over 4th of July weekend, I was in town with a GM for Hilton. We were meeting the GM for a group of restaurants in the area to discuss ways to bring more patrons and nightlife to the area. On Sunday the 3rd , We were walking the Strand and decided this place would be a great place for the meeting because it had a small number of patrons and was quiet. The long stringy haired bartender was so completely rude to us that we just had one beer and moved our meeting elsewhere. I have never encountered a bartender this rude and I’ve been in the business quite some time.

This venue has a warm and comfortable feel to it right in the historic downtown portion of Galveston, with inviting staff and prompt and courteous service. The customer experience was great and we enjoyed connecting with friends from the local area. They DO allow smoking in doors so be aware of this if you have allergies or are generally sensitive to such things. Navigating through the bar itself can be tricky as there are some very narrow areas and the restrooms are in dire need of deep cleaning and repair.

Yelp
Solid service industry spot in downtown Galveston. Don't expect a bunch of tourists in here. And if you're a tourist, you're gonna be throwing them back with some two-fisted pirates fresh off their shift, looking for skin and drink. You'll smell like smoke, you'll taste like whiskey, and you'll need a late night cheeseburger following. And say hi to Mike Snow.

Yelp
The ADA act of 1990 states that establishments may not require special identification for service animals https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americans_with_Disabilities_Act_of_1990 "Businesses are allowed to ask if the animal is a service animal and ask what tasks it is trained to perform, but they are not allowed to ask the service animal to perform the task nor ask for a special ID of the animal. They cannot ask what the person's disabilities are. A person with a disability cannot be removed from the premises unless either of two things happen: the animal is out of control and its owner can not get it under control (e.g. a dog barking uncontrollably in a restaurant), or the animal is a direct threat to people's health and safety.". If you have a service animal you should know that this establishment does not respect this law.

Yelp
Way Expensive?! Stopped in for 3 domestic small mug drafts, bartender refilled my mug 3 times. When I was checking out tab is for $21.75 ($7.25 each) before tip. I asked the bartender, doesn't that seem high? He yells at me that's what all the bars charge. I put it on a card so the extra $s could not be pocketed. Ask how much before you order.

Yelp
Great place to enjoy a few drinks after dinner. The night we went, there were only a few other people in The Old Cellar which was exactly what I was up for. My honey and I enjoyed a few and chatted with the bartender. Overall, a very enjoyable and relaxing experience. The bar had a pretty large selection of liquor and beer. The bartender was super friendly and gave us some great tips on other places to try on the island.

Yelp
We decided to try this bar for a drink before dinner, and I'm happy we did. The bar had just opened so only one other patron there before our party of 4 arrived. The bartender, Miguel, was super friendly and can sing along to Estelle's "American Boy" quite well! :) He gave us recommendations of places to try while we were visiting Galveston and was just overall a super nice guy. We only had one drink before we had to rush off to our dinner, but will definitely go back next time we visit. Highly recommend.

Yelp
It's a little small and hard to find seating for navigate when it is crowded, but I do prefer this bar to Molly's. It's not quite as dark and the atmosphere is a little more homely. The drinks are good and well priced and the bartenders are always very nice.

Yelp
Still my.favorite haunt. Bar staff is just what you'd want from a local dive. Nice to see the beer selection expanding.
