Good Golf Is An Adventure Sport

"Presumably it’s only golfers who will be interested in the Old Course Hotel; a few of you may just be mad for the hills of Fife, but most are here to see the birthplace of the game as we know it." - Mark Fedeli

"The doyen of St Andrews hotels, this classic property borders the renowned 17th Road Hole of the Old Course, overlooking the famous links and West Sand Beach. Still, you needn’t play golf to appreciate the Old Course Hotel, especially its Kohler Waters Spa, complete with bathing experiences, a 65-foot indoor swimming pool, a rooftop garden with a hot tub, and more. In the 144 rooms—including 35 suites—guests enjoy elegant yet contemporary interiors, many created by French designer Jacques Garcia. Also on-site are six distinct dining and drinking options, from Sands (a brasserie emphasizing local, seasonal ingredients) and the Jigger Inn (offering home-cooked food and a selection of Scottish beers) to the Road Hole Bar (famous for having more than 250 whiskies)."

"Presumably it's only golfers who will be interested in the Old Course Hotel; a few of you may just be mad for the hills of Fife, but most are here to see the birthplace of the game. For the Old Course is not just any old course, but the original course, St. Andrews, and the Old Course Hotel stands so close to these ancient links it’s actually in play on the 17th hole." - Tablet Hotels

Thank you to all the Afternoon Tea team who made my mum’s 80th birthday so special. From the moment we arrived the birthday girl was given 5 star treatment. We were treated to champagne before a delicious selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes. Everything was top-notch. The service throughout was warm, friendly and attentive. We had a gorgeous view from our table on a sunny, clear day. The highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of a stunning birthday cake. We had ordered this and expected a simple sponge! Wow, it was a work of art, beautifully decorated with red rose buds and gold leaf. Stunning. It was boxed up to take home as we were all full but we can confirm it tasted as good as it looked when we sampled some later in the day. Thank you so much Old Course for making my mum’s big birthday a day to remember for all the right reasons!

Perfect getaway for golfing. The hotel is nice, it doesn’t really present as 5 star though. Certainly not compared to the states or the Middle East. But for Scotland, it is likely one of the best we have. At 240 GBP for a massage there is an expectation level that they just don’t meet.

Google
Truly excellent. All the staff are amazing, but special shout out to Cameron in the Swilcan resto for making our dinner at the bar a real highlight of the trip! Also Anita who took very good care of us at breakfast. My friend and I had amazing good and wine in the Jigger as well. Spa was fab. A return trip to the hotel is already on the cards!

Google
Spectacular! This hotel really exceeds expectations. Beautiful room with a great view over one of the world's top golf courses. Lovely spa facility, free to guests outside peak hours. Super breakfast selection. Short walk into centre of St Andrews or to the beach. Thanks for a great break.

The OCH is relatively modern, having been built on the site of the former St Andrews railway station. The good news is that it embraces this with a refreshing contemporary feel - you also don’t need to be a keen golfer to enjoy its excellent location.||Rooms are nicely presented - well worth trying to secure a sea view room (even numbers I recall) with contemporary Scottish feel.||Restaurants and bars on the top floor have amazing views. Menu is also contemporary takes on Scottish favourites - again refreshing and welcome. Service is attentive and welcoming||Spa has just been remodelled and is excellent - a real stand out moment of our visit||All in all, a really good balance of traditional and contemporary that we’d highly recommend. We’ll be back

What can I say about the OCH. It’s one of our favourite places to go and we do, about once a year. |This visit was as good as ever. We had our 7 month old Scottie puppy with us so we stayed in a Champion course room where they allow for a dog. These rooms are gorgeous, for the human as well as the dog. High ceiling, large room, upscale bathroom, quiet part of the hotel, and your very own glass back door that opens onto a dog-friendly outdoor grassy area. And you are right off the 17th. |My husband loved the modern shower that allowed you to choose between a single, direct water stream, or two shower heads that came out at either side! |The puppy loved his very own dog bed, treats, dog toy and bowls.

…enjoyed our visit. Very friendly welcome from the doorman. We wanted to see the Hall of Champions and he gladly directed us to its location. Great history - nicely done. Then, we wandered around a bit and decided to stop in at the bar for drinks. Enjoyed a table overlooking the greens. Great service. Had a pizza too - deelish. Visited the Pro Shop too and had to buy a golf shirt and hat. Fun visit.

Absolutely loved staying here. Amazing staff. Super comfortable room. The spa was such a delight - great massage and a lovely place to relax for hours! Can’t wait to come back - I think this is my new favourite hotel!!!

Yelp
This hotel is absolutely the best hotel we've stayed in. The spacious room was so comfortable. The view was beautiful. The staff were so helpful and friendly. The food was *chef kiss* so delicious and fresh. We came with a group of golf friends and had a wonderful time. Would highly recommend! A nice walk from the Golf Museum and other bars and restaurants.

Yelp
I just used the Spa facilities, but walked around the the place, looks really good. Very nice people working there and my spa experience was great, at least the massage was. They did not explain the facilities to me when I checked in, there were no shower shoes in my locker and it was a maze to find the pool and jacuzzi, again if it was explained it would of been much easier. My masseuse, Olga, was fantastic and she brought it from 3 stars to 4.

Yelp
Very disappointed! Instant coffee and low quality tea in the rooms. Are you kidding me? This is supposed to be a 5 star hotel after all. Every other 5 star hotel that I stayed at in the UK had a Nespresso machine in the room and high quality tea. Oh, and the coffee on the fourth floor dining room isn't great either. Tastes burnt. I do have to give credit where credit is due though. The breakfast food is fantastic! They make the best scrambled eggs. The beds are horrible - old, hard and lumpy. Also, the king sized bed is smaller than an American Queen sized bed. I've stayed at much lesser quality hotels and have had a better sleep.

Yelp
Was expecting to be wowed considering this is a five star hotel. No staff out front. Ground floor room with odd men walking by at all hours. Dinner was mediocre. Unsalted meat. White bread from tescos and lackadaisical service. Room service forgot half my breakfast order and tea was cold. Save your money and stay somewhere else.

Yelp
3 stars only for its rich history. We planned our trip to Scotland over a year ago. At the time I inquired to St. Andrews about a tee time for my husband who LIVES for golf and who was overwhelmed at the opportunity to play golf at literally the home of golf. We were told at the time that there are two ways to secure a tee time. Lottery or paying an exorbitant amount. Since we couldn't count on the lottery we were willing to pay (like over $2,000 USD). Anyway the next day our travel agent tells me that the course had been rented out to a private group the weekend we were to be there. Disappointing but what can you do? The hotel never mentioned there OTHER courses at St Andrews that he could have played. Anyway we arrived Saturday and he immediately found the golf concierge to inquire about playing that afternoon at another course. The concierges response was 'you can try' as in you're on your own. No let me help (and literally this is his JOB). No calls to the other courses nothing. So he inquired about playing Sunday and the golf concierge proceeded to tell him all courses are closed on Sundays. So imagine our surprise to wake up this morning to MANY golfers playing the other courses. We had now timed out as we have a 3pm flight to Ireland and his disappointment is palpable. This all happened AFTER we had to wait 3 hours to be able to check into our room, despite a request for early checkin. I went to the desk twice to check on the progress (the second time after 3pm) when they finally said our room was ready. If it was ready, why did I have to go ask? Not acceptable. Our room was a suite indeed with blood red walls and a charming fireplace. An added bonus was the rampant smell of CAT PISS throughout the room. I used 1/4 of a bottle of $100 cologne to continually try and mask the smell. How they thought nobody would smell that is anyones guess. So while my husband was impressed with the size and the view of the old course and the ocean, I couldn't get past the horrific smell (anyone who has ever owned a cat knows exactly what I'm describing) Anyway, snooty staff, seems Americans aren't well liked so help was spotty (there were bright spots however (regular concierge and restaurant wait staff) so it wasn't completely bad). The golf concierge was rude, snotty and couldn't be bothered. The cat piss was the topper

Yelp
There is no other place to stay in St. Andrews! Terrific service, huge, beautiful suites, killer views from numerous restaurants and bars on premises. AMAZING!

Yelp
We were fortunate to spend 5 glorious nights at this grand hotel and I can't say enough about the spacious and comfy rooms. The bed and linens were absolutely luxurious, the multi-showerheads and super deep tub were a perfect cure for that jet lag. We dined at the Jigger Inn and Sands Grill which gave us a good flavor of a local pub and 5 star restaurant. The breakfast buffet was daily and you won't go for want at this plentiful buffet, they had everything or would get you whatever you fancied. I sampled several versions of fish and chips and have to say that the Jigger Inn wins for the best battered fish. Kohler bought this resort and I can attest that a Kohler Spa is one of the best world wide. I didn't take advantage of this one but, would still recommend it based on my visit to American Club in the U.S. I can only hope that I get to go back to this lovely resort!

Yelp
Fabulous hotel. A must if you travel to Scotland to play St Andrews and the famous golf courses. Great location to the town which is a 15 minute walk. Beautiful view and great rooms. There is a Kohler Spa with a large spectacular swimming pool and spa faculties and treatments. Variety of restaurants. Book early.

Yelp
There is another old course hotel yelp with the correct old station road address, but since this yelp review page was started first I will continue the thread. This high-end hotel is spotless, posh, and screams GOLF but I had to dock off 2 stars from 5 because the hotel gave me a room facing the parking lot as well as an automatically added 10% gratuity charge for using the Kohler spa services (not the facility that's free from room hire). For over $400 a night in a double room (and not as many rooms filled during the off-season/low period) I hoped that the management would hook me up with a room with a view of the golf course...but no. By the way, I take hot showers and the vent/exhaust in the water room was not working properly. The lighting in the room was dim that I had to read near the steamy water room. I also paid 92 pounds for a 50 minute massage (I forgot what kind) that was fine but it should be at my discretion for tipping. The scottish breakfast was hearty, served in a beautiful room with a view on the 4th floor, and included with your room rate. Overall I would stay here again if the price is right. The front desk reception did care about my visit, but at that point it was too late since I checked out.

Yelp
High Tea and the Old Course Hotel in Saint Andrews? I think yes! This is an experience you must try when visiting Scotland. My hubby and I were recommended to try High Tea from a dear friend whom actually lives locally in Saint Andrews when we were visiting Scotland. I'm glad I took her up on the tip! From the moment we walked into the Old Course Hotel, we were greeted kindly by multiple staff. We sat down at a private table near the back of the restaurant. My hubby and I ordered Traditional High Tea. I ordered the vanilla tea. It was yummy! You could taste the quality of the scones, sandwiches, and mini cakes with each bite.

Yelp
If you thought you were ordering a good bolognese, you thought wrong. Dry. Sad. Pathetic.

Yelp
What's not to love about looking out of your hotel room over the Old Course. As a golfer, there is no greater sight and seeing the clubhouse lit up at night make the experience even better. Recently re-done, the place looks fantastic. Comfortable beds help you forget about your round or let you dream of your next one. Features a great pub on the first floor. Stay for at least one night for the experience.

Yelp
Had a charming suite overlooking the road hole. The service was top-notch. On-site premier restaurant was rather underwhelming. Wander into town for a better meal but don't forget to visit the top floor at the end of the night for a pint!

Yelp
Great hotel - real 5 star experience. I usually stay here when I got to St Andrews for family stuff. Pros :- Immaculate hotel/presentation Excellent helpful staff Very peaceful Spa on site Great bar/restaurant Cons :- Even though the rooms are $300+ a night they still charge for the internet Internet is some what ropey/unreliable Parking can be a little bit problematic sometimes

Yelp
Was there as a wedding guest. The place is lovely, it just feels classy. All staff were friendly and helpful. Absolutely loved our time there, nothing I could fault
