On the Grid : The Old George

"The Old George is typically the kind of very British pub that you will love! It is a beautifully restored East End pub dating back to the 1700s, with wooden floor, vintage furniture, old brick walls and some flowery wallpapers. The place has a cosy living room feel, so it's always very pleasant to spend a moment here, either for a Sunday Roast or for a late night with friends. They also serve incredible gastro-pub food like Truffled wild mushroom mac'n'cheese or Crispy pig cheek croquettes and fine Sunday roasts. They now opened a restaurant at the first floor that I highly recommend to try! Last thing, they have a big beer garden in the backyard." - Mélanie Hubert-Crozet

It used to be a great pub, sadly now is a meeting point for nitrous oxide ballon drivers.

🚇 Bethnal Green 🍺 £5.60 Amstel ❤️ A versatile Bethnal Green boozer. . The Old George is located amongst the hustle and bustle on Bethnal Green Road. The nearest tube is Bethnal Green which is only a five minute walk away. . This pub is believed to have been present by 1703 and by the mid-nineteenth century was trading as the George IV. It was rebuilt in its present form in 1880. . The decor here is rustic with exposed brickwork walls and a dark wood floor running throughout. There is plenty of low level seating and banquette sofas around the perimeter walls. Down the right hand side is a good size servery with barrels above advertising upcoming events. If you like your live sport you’re in luck, there are large screens showing Premier League, Six nations and the like. Even though this isn’t a riverside pub there is a slight nautical feel to the place. A big bonus here is the large beer garden at the rear which gets very busy in the warmer months. . The beer line up was decent and included craft and cask options. Being the boring fart that I am I chose a pint of Amstel, my pint was very agreeable and under six quid. There is a good selection of comfort food on the food menu, burgers and pizzas are the order of the day, the food did smell good. . The atmosphere was relaxed on this Saturday afternoon with a dozen or so punters in for the footy. There were a few tables with reserved signs on which I’m not a fan of, some pubs seem to operate this way to guarantee business, so I can see why. The crowd was mix of all ages until about twenty young lads walked in which lowered the aggregate some what. This pub livens up in the evenings and has DJ and Karaoke nights throughout the month. . I last visited @theoldgeorgebg back in 2017 and not a lot has changed. My review was positive then and I can report that my review is positive now. There is plenty to enjoy at this boozer, get this one on the list. . ℹ️ Info correct on visiting 04.02.23

Food was really good, served quickly (there was no-one else eating though), the ladies behind the bar were great, the first barman (and that's being generous) needs sacking frankly. Couldn't pull a pint, offered the non-drinker a pint of soda stained with the tail end of the coke syrup and said "try it anyway", beer was sour, 3 of the lines were down and the entire place was cold, somehow all the tables were booked though. No idea what they served them. Genuinely decent and interesting pub let down by 1 poor staff member and a lack of stock (bearing in mind this was a Saturday night with the Rugby World Cup final on).

Very cool interior and a good selection of beers. Had halloumi fries for a snack - very fast service and delicious. Will definitely come back because they had a cat at the bar. The cat is chill and let's you pet it.

Spent a lovely sunny lunchtime there with my husband and two young kids. We sat outside in the large beer garden and had a great lunch. My son especially loved the halloumi burger. It is only a short walk to the Museum of Childhood and not far from Victoria Park.

Yelp
Let's be honest, I don't venture to this side of town all that much being a South-of-the-river girl (I've heard it all and don't care what you think about the South, all you North/East Londoners). Saying that I have been here a bit more than usual since it's Thomas A's hood and we do like to hang. I assume this is now his local, if it wasn't before it is now since we just had the most epic Sunday Roast here today. We manage to get here 5 mins before they stop serving, how lucky was that? It was so meant to be. Two options for roast, beef or chicken - no vegetarian roast options as far as I can see (if you know me, this does not bother me). Beef for me please, it came it was large. Roast potatoes, carrots, cabbage, Yorkshire pudding, horseradish sauce, gravy and 2/3 slice of perfectly raw roast beef. PERFECTION! It was worth the £13. Why 4 stars and not 5, you ask? Well I felt quite cold where we were sitting near the back so some heating would had been nice, but considering it looks a bit different and 'undone' (unless this is the look they are going for in which case, i'm old) than the last time I was here I'm going to assume they are renovating the back area in which case I might change it to 5 stars after I visit next time. Also just as a note (if the staff ever read this), the black pepper grains are too big for the pepper shaker.

Yelp
Don't you love when you walk into a new place, full of hope, a little nervous but mainly excited to see what it's all about. Well I walk past this place most days and have never brought myself to give it a go. So, with a sunny Sunday in the pocket, we shot down here and I may have found my new summer hang out spot. On walking in, and from the outside, this place is a tradition british pub. Wooden bars, vintage furniture, plenty of setting space and some excellent choices behind the bar. We grabbed some drinks and then started to have a little walk around to explore. I initially thought the initial room was it, but how I was mistaken! Moving through the corridor, there's even more cool little rooms in the back, filled with awesome wing-back chairs that will make you feel part of the Mad Men cast. The best bit tho, walking a little further, and bang a HUGE pub garden. And I mean huge. The Sun was enticing us from inside and now I could see why so many people go in here, and why it always looks empty from out the front. The garden must have at lest 20 tables, loads of room between each and what looks like some outdoor BBQ action. The staff, service, and overall atmosphere was a huge surprise and will certainly be popping my head in a lot over the coming months. Solid find...

Yelp
This pub is your classic east end mash up of old furniture, brick walls and people from all over the place but somehow it manages to come across much cosier than other places in the area and even a bit less try hard given its location. Its not super loud or really dingy and there are quite a few tables for groups etc so its perfect for socialising. The drinks are reasonable compared to other parts of London at around £4 a pint so you many even go home with some change! I don't know if they still do it but I need to get back for their bacon sarnie. As an avid brown sauce fan I wasn't sure what to make of garlic mayo and chutney paired with my bacon!! But it was so unexpectedly delicious and its now turned in to one of those foods you want so bad out of the blue with little or no chance of getting it! I've always had a nice time here and there's plenty of space for a good crowd within the rooms and garden. I'd say its easily a top choice of pub when in Bethnal Green.

Yelp
Huge beer garden out back and cosy large space inside. They could make that beer garden seriously cool but at the moment it's a bit concrete jungle. It's still a great space when super busy. The food is ok. I had a mushroomMac cheese which literally had two mushrooms sprinkled on top. They had so much flavour but if they had those times six it would have been better. Still lots of flavour in the dish. The house wine is easy to drink. Especially the red. Just have to watch the pours sometimes they are under. Fill to the line people! (What. It's a whole sip ok). Lots of board games scattered around and great spaces for bigger groups. Good atmosphere most days of the week and especially Sunday's.

Yelp
Finally made it in for the sunday roast... It's the best roast I've had in ages. I'm trying to think of a place I've liked more and nothing is standing out. £13 and it's well worth it, I feel like I'm exploding still a few hours later. The horseradish sauce was excellent, not too strong, lots of cabbage, crispy potatoes, carrots, perfectly done beef, not overcooked.... they stop serving at 6 so come in before then, we just made the cut at 5 to, and I have to give them credit for still doing a top-notch one and not just giving us some burnt ends because the chefs probably wanted to leave. Zillion thanks, guys!

Yelp
At first I was a bit put off by the shabby chic interior (more shabby than chic) as it feels like it's trying a bit too hard to be 'East London'. However, the atmosphere is really nice so after an excellent bottle of wine we stayed for some food. The burger is AMAZING and the chips fantastic. The squid was also a must for a starter. I'd definitely recommend eating here. It's been said before but it's true, the beer garden is big and fun but could be so much better with a bit of decoration. All in all a great pub for food or drinks.

Yelp
The Old George used to be my local pub, and for good reason- the food is nice, the variety of beer and cider on offer is wide, the place is warm, and welcoming. You might be wondering then, why only three stars? And the truth is, The George is good at a whole bunch of things, but the neighbourhood it's in is just spectacular. There are other places I'd rather drink in. There are other places I'd rather eat at. What the George has going for it, is that there is nowhere else in the neighbourhood I'd spend all day in. I can't think of anywhere else locally that I'd stop into for a tasty Sunday roast, only for that to turn into a couple of pints in the beer garden, to then move inside for a board-game or two, before burgers, and back outside again at dusk. It has something special there, in a constant but not overwhelming hubub, and an atmosphere that is relaxed and homely, never getting in your face or trying too hard. If you're after a particular thing to eat or drink, you can maybe do better without going too far. If you want a lazy Sunday that involves not going -anywhere-, The Old George is a solid bet.

Yelp
Shouldn't let so many people reserve tables on a Friday, turn up at 10 past 6 and there's no chance of sitting down because half the tables are empty and reserved. Ridiculous TBH, it's a nice pub but I certainly won't be bothering with it again.
