Truly Kid-Friendly Bar and Restaurant Patios in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"If you’re really looking for a cocktail, Old Gold’s patio has no age restrictions before 9 p.m.; you can get an Old Fashioned there and the kid can have carrots and hummus (or, let’s be real, french fries)." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
This ole' California Beach Gal has struck gold - Old Gold that is right here in Burlington VT! It is the GROOVIEST vintage store in the East and brought me back to my West coast Melrose & Santa Monica Blvd vintage shopping days. The collection was a mix of new and vintage clothes and accessories, everything from fun street wear to funky business attire and an ultimate selection of over-the-top disco party diva wear. The staff, Camara and Nicholas are knowledgeable and incredibly creative so ask for their help when putting together a divine groovy look.

Google
INCREDIBLE costume/vintage store with the kindest staff. One of the workers let me lay out all my pieces and talk through my outfit and she helped me find what I was missing.

Amazing funky clothing and accessories! My daughters come here every year from Montreal to shop at this unique vintage retro cool store! A must see and buy! 🤩

Google
Super cool stuff here and helpful staff! Just a few days ago, my husband wore a suit from Old Gold in our wedding!!

Google
Sara and Nicolas knock it out of the park any day. Amazing selection and the staff will go over and beyond to find you an outfit that rocks your body and fits your budget. Follow their Instagram for new arrivals! Whether you're going costume, formal, or retro hang they'll have what you want.

Google
This used to be my all time favorite Burlington stop. However it’s not anything like it used to be. Instead of vintage and preowned, all their items are now all ordered online and seemingly cheap material

I was looking for some outfits for a music festival, and this store had EVERYTHING (bodysuits, tights, body glitter, accessories.. you name it). All of the sales associates were so helpful and fun! They all made me feel so comfortable and brought me some amazing pieces. Kind workers and great product. Highly recommended :)

Yelp
WARNING THEY SCREAM AT YOU: Initially I really enjoyed looking around, they had a ton of cool stuff and I wanted to take a picture because my roommate and I were going to dress up together but she couldn't make it and also the vibe was so cool. I pulled out my phone literally got SCREAMED at from across the store. I hadn't seen any of the signage that the lady said said was everywhere (looked for it tears in my eyes never saw anything)... and based on others yelps many people have taken photos too and I don't know maybe ask nicer and in a less publicly embarrassing way, people have social anxiety. I was there to get my Halloween costume and ready to spend some money. But instead I left and almost started crying. So do not enter unless you're ready to get screamed at!

Mike H.

Yelp
This was my 1st time in the store after moving here, and stated that upon entering. The staff and boss were very friendly and helpful, however they ended up guiding me into a woman's jacket that doesn't fit and smells of excessive perfume. My ADD got the best of me in that store :/ My partner (who is sensitive to perfumes) quickly laughed/scoffed " ha, uh...no" upon seeing/smelling me try it on at home 4 hours after purchase. Called back the next morning to see if I could get store credit, was told perhaps and to come back. I don't live in Burlington so it's about 30 min round trip. Longer story shorter, no dice even when I proposed that if the store credit wasn't used in the next 24 hours = they could keep the smelly jacket AND the credit. Idk what boss/manager wouldn't see the value in this, especially for customer retention- but they didn't. Would have unloaded a bunch of accessory items onto us at worst, and probably spent $ beyond the jacket credit, but oh well ‍ Anything you can find in there you can probably find online for much cheaper, and potentially new. Will not be supporting this small business again, and will use FB market for these type of items in the future. First time customer, last time customer. Simple as that.

Yelp
Nice exterior, window design. Interior is neat and organized. If u are looking for $38 Motorhead t-shirts, this is the place for you. REALLY EXPENSIVE.

Yelp
A friend of mine and her boyfriend babysit the coolest 12 yr old girl who happens to have Downs Syndrome and only wanted to go to a store and try on a a dress for Halloween and as soon as they went in Old Gold they werent made to feel comfortable or welcomed at all. They were told no trying things on and if they did want to it was strongly implyed that you need to buy something as well. This little girl couldnt even try on a dress unless the owner could zip her into it. They told her "they're not a try on store" when they had a dressing room and we all could see it. And from that point on they followed us around and just asked annoying questions insinuating we wouldnt purchase any of their overpriced, tacky merchandise. They kept whispering and looking at us and it just made me feel sick to watch this girl get bullied and my friends who are the nicest people I know to be treated like that. After a long time I had to say something about all this and the owner comes up and totally starts lying about everything that happened! She denied any snobby or impolite attitudes and said I was delusional and casuing a scene. Rude, pretentious and just snobby. My friends and I are told no pictures allowed, but (and this is in the employees own words verbatim) "even if you do take pictures and put them on social media dont forget to tag us!" Are you kidding me?

Yelp
Fantastic Costume Shop!! Great, friendly service... to help you customize your ideas! I LOVE coming here to play! It's THE PLACE to come when you have a fun event requiring just "the right" pieces.

Yelp
One of the friendliest, community driven businesses in Vermont. Everyone working their is a friendly face that feels like a real friend I'd have coffee with.

Yelp
a pretty typical vintage costume shop, if it were on haight st, but it's in vermont, so hardly typical at all. this is the place to come if you're looking for that special chainmail corset or those perfect horsehair pasties. don't forget to check out some pvc miniskirts and some cowboy hats while you're at it! remember that taking pictures while trying on stuff is *not* permitted--i didn't notice the signs posted every 5ft until after i got my shot in some massively oversized sunglasses :).

Yelp
Old Gold is somewhat out-of-place in Vermont, given the population of crunchy UVM kids, aging hippies and everything in between, but it's a welcome change from hemp boutiques. Within one can find go-go boots in virtually every fluorescent shade available, wigs, an impressive selection of vintage jeans, display cases of vintage jewelry and sunglasses, racks of old T-shirts advertising stuff like someone's 1987 family reunion, puffy Police and Fraggle Rock stickers, your dad's blazer from 1974, a plethora of pretty vintage dresses, and a host of interesting costumes. And lots more stuff that I can't remember at the moment. Basically, if it's kitschy and/or old, it'll be found in Old Gold. I managed to pick up 4 thrift store T-shirts and a geometric-patterned cuff for ~$40. Not bad, considering that one cotton tee at Urban Outfitters costs about $24, and you're likely to see at least 5 other people on the street wearing that same UO shirt. Now for the negatives. First, it seems like Old Gold isn't strictly secondhand; I glimpsed a number of new items in stock that fetched a somewhat higher price. I came to Old Gold for one-of-a-kind stuff! Secondly, the price. Yes, I realize that vintage stores typically charge more than, say, Salvation Army or Goodwill or other thrift stores, but I would never spend $75 for a pair of pink patent leather go-go boots, or a crazy electric blue Afro wig. Well, not unless I had a flamboyant sugar daddy, anyway. At any rate, Old Gold is a fun little store to pop into if you're looking for something other than Teva sandals or hemp pants. The staff is also super-helpful and polite.

Yelp
Very cool costume store. I needed some finishing touches for my hamburglar outfit and I was able to find it at Old Gold. Even though I went in 3 minutes before close on new years eve, the staff were extremely helpful and went out of their way to help me find a hat and a cape. I didn't have a lot time here, but would definitely check it out again and spend some more time.

Yelp
Great place to buy funky or vintage clothing in Burlington. But, the perfect place to splurge on a fantastic Halloween outfit! I have found years' worth of outfits at Old Gold - some of them vintage and some new, outrageous piles of fun. They even have a great selection of accessories to top off your look or find a fun gift. Some things to consider: - Don't go Oct 25th expecting to find a good Halloween costume. This place gets absolutely mobbed and the staff is (understandably) tired and a bit cranky. Plan ahead and go in the beginning of month to get help finding an exceptional outfit. - Don't talk on your cell here. You'll immediately become the staff's least favorite customer.

Yelp
Shopping here is a guaranteed fun time, but expect to shell out a couple of bucks 'cause this place ain't cheap. Even the sale prices can be a little exorbitant, but the items offered here are hard to find at such a nice quality and altogether. The staff are generally helpful, friendly, and a little quirky. I always appreciate their input, although they sometimes seem a little anxious about getting you into a changing room or setting aside the items you want on the counter. I'm not sure if it's a shoplifting fear or if they're looking out for preserving the quality of clothes. It's a small shop, so it can get a little crowded. But definitely worth a stop (or several!) if you're in the area!

Yelp
Old Gold is a unique place given the context of Church St. and surrounds. It's a bit pricey-- but the product line is so unique that it hardly matters. You can get corsets, fringed skirts, wigs, ruffled bloomers, pasties, cool hats, weird belt buckles, naughty costumes, stripper shoes, fake eyelashes, leg warmers, vintage prom dresses, you name it. It's fun just to play, and the staff always gets into the spirit.

Yelp
I'm with Su R. on this one. Old Gold is overpriced but they have some really funky stuff that's so unique you might be willing to pay a little more. I've gotten some great things from this place. I like going here for accessories, but I've gotten the occasional clothing piece from here too. Great place to find some one-of-a-kind gifts. I usually pick something small up and bring it home to a friend as a travel gift.

Yelp
I have never been so appalled by a business's staff in my life. They were rude and extremely unhelpful. When I asked for another size they were upset that they had to go back downstairs because they had just gone down for another customer. I was shocked and appalled by the service I received. It is needless to say I will never shop there again.

Yelp
Best place around Burlington! Old Gold is the only place I will go dress shopping! For any occasion, they have a dress. The best part is that the employees pay so much attention to you and will help you pick out the perfect dress for as long as you need. They're playful, insightful, and very attentive. As well as dresses, they have fun costumes in the front, a cheap jewelry table, a lot of fun vintage wear, and a whole wall full of authentic cow boy boots!

Yelp
Tad annoyed. I get that its a store not meant for children but sometimes people with children want to shop too (I know, how dare we). I have shopped there several times, even bought my husbands tux for our wedding, a dress, and something fun (ergo child). I was so excited to bring my best friend there and one of the store workers was so incredibly rude. She hovered and treated my friend's 3 year old like she was a complete nuisance even though she was behaving extremely well, listening to her mother, and simply enjoying seeing the interesting things around the store. Very disappointed and probably won't shop there again. You'd think having a store like that they would loosen up a little, I dunno have a sense of humor. Some kindness toward her daughter probably would have resulted in some purchases.

Alex B.

Yelp
Cute shop. Expensive though but one of a kind pieces. Mostly women's clothes. Would've liked to see more men's clothes.

Yelp
I love Old Gold! I have noticed some others have commented on the prices. I don't feel they are THAT overpriced. You have to remember that Old Gold is a small mom and pop shop that has been in VT for a reallllly long time. Smaller businesses can't really offer the same deals as big box stores. Maybe you can get that wig or costume at a better price, but I prefer to put my money back into smaller businesses to help them thrive in this economy. Also can I say what amazing customer service I have always had there? I always have the best time with the employees when I shop! Excellent selection of new and vintage and if you don't see it on the floor they probably have it hidden in their magical back room. Way to go old gold. Keep Burlington stylin' !

Yelp
I love Old Gold! Great stuff, Great Staff. Where else can you get this kind of stuff in Vt?

Yelp
What a wonderful amazing store! I have lived in VT my whole life and went in for my first time tonight! Oh my, I have been missing so much! I went in with a group of friends and the staff was so helpful with helping us find the perfect costume for our Studio 54 themed party. The price was affordable depending on what you wanted. Staff is amazing, lots of choices, tons of fun!

Yelp
the selection is awesome but the people who work there could not be worse. me and my friend came in wanting to try on some crazy clothes and have a good time. when we got into the changing room the woman working stood directly outside them and just waited the whole time. both of us felt super uncomfortable like our privacy was being extremely invaded. not only did that happen, but there are no mirrors inside the changing rooms so you have to leave the changing room to see yourself and when you do a rude employee is staring you down. that felt like yet another invasion of privacy.my friend and i were in changing rooms right next to each other and i left mine to go see an outfit on her. the second i went into her changing room the lady yelled at us and told us we weren't allowed to be in each other's changing room. like what the HELL is going on?! we wanted to take some pictures together but that was also not allowed. we felt invaded and unwelcome. i have never been to a place with customer service so absolutely disgusting and horrid. i will never recommend this place and i sure as hell won't be back any time soon. save yourself the awful treatment and go to damn party city. at least they won't accost you there.

Yelp
Fun, Fun, Fun! My husband and I were on vacation checking out the Fall Foliage and decided a trip into Burlington to bike and explore was in order. We saw this place while driving in and it looked so much fun from the window display that we noted the location and went back before leaving town. What an adventure of costumes and recycled finds! The staff was so helpful and enthusiastic and played along as we tried on tons of silly outfits. I'm happy to note that we left that day with Lederhosen and a Dirndl in our suitcases :) Great side trip!

Yelp
I was visiting from California and was stopped in my tracks by a dress in the window. When I went in to ask about it, Will (sp?) was a great resource. I came back later to try it on and the whole staff was involved and helpful, offering suggestions and educated critiques as I tried to find the perfect dress for an upcoming Venetian Ball. The first dress I had seen was the winner and Thomas helped me find a perfect mask as well. I had such a lovely time while I was there. The staff and owner were patient as I pondered my options. Their collections are substantial and a delight to wander through. I'm just sorry they are 3000 miles away so I can't use them as a regular wardrobe resource!

Yelp
It's like the village in Vermont! Yes, a bit overpriced, esp for VT, but the merchandise is so unique. I'm in vintage heaven here! I got a few Beatles pins that were original stock, yea! Great wigs too and costumes. They don't however let you take any pictures in here which would be fun and they told me not to try on wigs unless I planned on buying one. Umm, how do i know if I want to buy it without trying it on? But aside from that, i go there when I'm in Burlington because I love the selection of vintage stuff.

Gordon M.

Yelp
First off, if you're looking for a place to pick up a costume without breaking the budget, look elsewhere. Secondly the atmosphere is all wrong. From the time you walk in until the time you leave, you are constantly monitored by several idle employees, as if you're going to steal something. When I brought a young girl with down syndrome to try on a halloween dress, we were told it's not a "dress up store".. therefore unless we intend to purchase it, it's not worth the trouble. Disappointed, we went to the back room to look through more costumes and were followed by the attendant, who pulled aside a second employee. We were then approached and asked for the whereabouts of a dress we had previously looked at. I don't wonder why, of all the people looking at costumes in the same fashion, we were the ones questioned.. I understand they have a business to run but it would've been nice to make a little girl's day. Instead she left upset and confused.

Darcy C.

Yelp
Old Gold is one of Burlington's treasures. I've only ever seen a store like this in Manhattan and even then it wasn't as rich in adventurous and well made clothing. You can get new beautifully made items, punk outfits and acessories galore, stockings and socks for every occasion, vintage dresses, and of course wigs! The added bonus is that every one who works there is postive, ready to help and cleary likes the place. We pop in when we are looking for something specific or just to walk around because every time we go there we see something new.

Mat S.

Yelp
I went in last week to buy a pair of boots, and the boots are already ruined and all I did was wear them twice... can you say CHEAP!!?!! Plus, I wasn't even given a chance to browse before some asian woman in a costume was behind my back every three seconds like I was going to steal something saying "may I help you?"... I couldn't even focus on what was on the shelves because she wouldn't leave me alone... even when I showed her the $2500 I had on my possession. Then, I was told, from some lady that looked like a man, that I was "delusional" for being upset about that and while she was implying that I should leave... I had to beg her to stay so I could buy the boots I was waiting for the asian lady to find for me in back (that now have broken soles)... I should have just let the man-hater throw me out instead of buying those cheap things... but I am sure she had a nice little tall tale to tell her girlfriend and 15 cats when she got home... (ps I am gay and this is NOT "homophobia"... just making a snotty observation)

Ashley M.

Yelp
I'm sorry to say that I did not have a great experience in Old Gold recently. I am a direct support professional, and this past Sunday I was caring for a client, a twelve year old girl with Down Syndrome. We both thought it would be fun to go to Old Gold and find something funny to try on. Having been there before, I knew that they cater mostly to clientele who are prepared to spend $100+ on a Halloween costume, so I told her she could pick out one thing to try on, and that's it. She picked out a dress (something I could have easily slipped over the clothes she was wearing), and I asked the saleswoman if we could try it on. She was very indirect, giving me both a "yes" and "no" answer. She said, "yes, but I have to zip her into it." Then, "this isn't really a costume shop." (There is a sign outside the store that says "costume warehouse..." ). A simple "no" would have sufficed, but this woman informed the rest of the staff of our presence, and from that point on we were followed around the store. There was always at least one employee staring at us, asking if we returned items back to where we found them. Several other people were trying on costumes, but we were the only ones made to feel excluded. The entire experience was infuriating, and in my professional opionion (as someone who has worked with and advocated for people with disabilities for a number of years) an act of discrimination towards someone with a disability. Fortunately, this girl had fun regardless, and didn't notice the learing stares by the staff. As I reflect on the experience, I am left with a lasting thought. I understand that Old Gold does not want hundreds of people flooding their store, trying on a number of outfits, and leaving without buying anything. I get that. But I also know that they had the power to change how that experience went. They could have made a little girl's day by letting her try on a pretty dress and letting me take one silly picture. Later on, they could have gone home to their roommate, partner, friend, or whoever, and told them about the sweet little girl who came into the store and tried on a dress, and how good it felt to make someone else happy. Instead, they treated me, my friends, and this child with such insincerity that I can't think of this place without cringing. I'm sure they didn't feel food about the experience either. One last thing... Old Gold is stupid expensive. I get that shopping locally is important, but there's a limit to my support and generosity towards the small business community. Old Gold will never get any of my business again.

Ali H.

Yelp
Think The Village in Vermont. Cool place to get costumes and funky clothes. Perfect for holloween or costume parties.

Fred L.

Yelp
I bought a few skirts for my lady at this store a few weeks ago and as it turns out, they were too small. The skirts were never worn, but when I went to exchange them for a larger size, they refused. They were very rude and confrontational, said their sales woman explained to me when I bought the items that they were no exchangeable, which she did not. I will never shop at Old Gold again.

Kailey B.

Yelp
I, for one, LOVE Old Gold. Yes, people could say it's a "costume" store, but for me - it's bubbly, fun, outrageous vintage clothing that you can't find anywhere else here in Vermont! Nowadays everyone is wearing American Eagle or Hollister - but Old Gold is the way to go if you're into neon leggings and big poofy skirts! The decorations are fabulous... it doesn't even seem like a store to me, more or less a second home. And the staff is so goofy and fun! I bought go-go boots, suspenders, a big belt, fashion gloves, legwarmers, fish-net tights, Bon Jovi pins... and not just for Halloween. Baby, I've worn it ALL to school. ;)

Sarah B.

Yelp
This is an awesome store. My husband and I got everything we needed for a 70's party we are attending. The service was awesome and we had a great time shopping.

Yelp
I went into Old Gold today for the second and last time ever. On my first visit I was with my 7 year old daughter who they treated like a criminal for being a kid even though she was calmly walking through the store beside me. I visited the store alone today and I have never been treated so terribly. They first told me to hurry up because they were closing and then verbally attacked me and called me rude for simply asking about the price of an item and said that they were going to raise the price as they do for rude people. I was in no way rude and I felt extremely attacked for no reason in this store. It was the most bizarre experience. I have read multiple reviews about this very same type of behavior and it's sad to see that it seems to be allowed to continue. I am a business owner and I take pride in treating my customers with respect and doing my best to make sure that my interactions are always positive. The people in this store seem to do the exact opposite. I will never go back there.
