The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week: November 10 | Eater LA

"After years of popping up around town, chef Jeff Vance’s Sicilian pizza project Old Gold Tomato Pies is now open in its permanent Los Feliz home slinging thick-crusted square pies. In the afternoon, rays of sunlight stretch from the tall front windows to illuminate the pies resting in the glass case, ready to be warmed when ordered. There’s something for everyone here, whether it be a classic cheese, a clam-topped slice, or a fully vegan pie; the pizza is reminiscent of San Francisco’s Golden Boy, a North Beach institution built around sturdy yet light Sicilian pie crusts. Start with a slice of the basic Old Gold, topped with a smear of tomato sauce and cheese, to fully take in all the flavors of the crust, before moving on to the more creative pies like the Fun Guy with creme fraiche and fennel pollen." - Eater Staff

Google
I was in the area and found this great place for Sicilian pizza and pasta. They also have vegan options. Their menu is small but what they do make, they do very well! I had the baked pasta with vodka sauce and cheese. I also had a slice of The Godson pizza which had pepperoni, mozzarella and parmesan cheeses. They were both fantastic! I haven't had a slice of pizza with such a crispy crust since I was in Italy. I came in an hour before closing, and I was impressed that everything was piping hot and tasted fresh. They also have hot chili oil available to use on your food, and it was just the right amount of heat. I wish I could have tried everything, but that just means I have to come back! Living in San Diego I found the prices very reasonable, especially since the quality is so good. In San Diego food this tasty would be more expensive.

Legit pizza, great staff, amazing owners and the best Caesar salad I’ve ever had. Makes me wish I lived in LA😭

Google
Love the fact that they have vegan slices, vegan ranch, and vegan parmesan on the tables The slice is a little too tall for my personal taste and stays soft in the middle (amazing crunch on the bottom of the crust though). The vegan cheese that is the default on the Utica left something to be desired. Adding almond ricotta improved it, but at an additional +$4 probably ultimately not worth it !

All the pizza (both vegan and non-vegan) was super yummy and this is the best vegan Caesar salad I have ever had.

Clean, food made fresh, the guy who I think is the owner heard it was someone’s birthday at the counter and gave a discount. Made our slices fresh and since it took a moment he gifted us a slice of focaccia, which I’d eyeballed after ordering and spoke to my date about. Jeff, the owner, asked us our names and gave his. It may be how hungry I was, but this place deserves love and loyalty. Love that there’s Sicilian slices from vegan (“Moral High Ground”) to meat-lovers, Asian fusion. Their signage and menus boast Bakers Bench, Chinatown LA. They have Dr. Browns soda too, root beer and black cherry.the Rosi’s hot oil is made in LA, too. As a tired traveler happening upon this spot, I hope the locals bring Jeff and his crew much success. Thanks for the bread.

Yelp
The location is still fairly new so you may have accidentally walked past by it, but be on the look out for the yellow painted storefront! We were lucky and they happened to be open on Monday and there was no line when we first got there. There are some seating in the vicinity but only a few 2 people tables and a bar seating area. They specialize in Sicilian pies and their slices are generous. The slices range about $4.50-$6ish dollar which may seem pricey but they are so worth it! I got the Fun Guy and Godson and devoured both within minutes! Remember to ask for ricotta and honey & to also try some of the chili oil they have out! I loved that they had vegan cheese options for those who want to add extra cheese to their pizza. The staff were very helpful. We were told that if there is something on the menu that isn't in the display window, let them know and they can make it. It just takes 15 minutes so please account for the time. Definitely check out this location if you're around the area. Not only tasty but filling!

Yelp
Wow! So happy with this addition to the neighborhood! I went for the pie and was amazed by the Sicilian style pizza - I couldn't think of a better way to experience the texture and flavor. They are doing a lot of things right. Looking forward to visiting again soon with the kiddos!

Yelp
Super yummy pizza (both vegan and non-vegan) and best vegan Ceasar salad I have ever had. Definitely will be coming back soon. Everyone was really nice too.

Yelp
So happy a good pizza spot has finally opened up in the neighborhood! Their salads and baked pastas are also incredible. My go-tos are the coastal elite (pizza w fresh clams and bacon on top) and the salad daze ( super fresh greens with a miso vinaigrette). The service here is so friendly and the staff is really knowledgeable about all their ingredients. This spot is also a good place to go for groups that have different dietary restrictions. They have really incredible vegan options!

Yelp
Opened up 2 weeks ago in such a good spot. Pizza is solid and reasonably priced. The service really made the experience.

Yelp
Pizza is tasty! I had the mushroom one (delicious!), all/four cheese (it smells soooooo good), and the pepperoni (honestly one of the best pepperoni slices I've had). I'll def go back to try more flavors. Now, the Saigon Cesar salad.... I'm not even a salad person and I inhaled that thing. Someone needs to get an award for that salad.

Yelp
Excellent focaccia Sicilian style pizza with farmers market ingredients. The North Beach had those San Francisco flavors. Fun Guy has healthy mushrooms instead of the usual industrial mushrooms most pizza place saddle you with. I'm getting a third now. They have vegan options.

Zachary W.

Yelp
First off, the pizza here was awesome and best I've had in LA. You could tell the quality of the ingredients were above what other shops use. The crust was light but had a great crunch and chew to it. I liked the hot oil you can add on top. My main feedback is the interior decorating didn't match the pizza. I walked in and got late night good cheap drunk pizza vibes. Given the price per slice, I probably would have walked past if it weren't a brand new neighborhood spot. I don't know the solution here without redoing the decor, but maybe adding a basket of fresh ingredients at the front or something like that to really advertise that you guys do quality over quantity. Anyway, rooting for the shop and I'll be back!

Yelp
Mark my words, once people realize this place exists there will be a massive line. It is 10/10 no notes. Perfect pie.

Louis C.

Yelp
Pizza is delicious. Service was great. I had the Godson, salad daze and the chocolate chip cookie from bakers bench! I want to try the homemade ranch and Cesar. I'll def be coming back.
