16 Best Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountain Cabins to Rent - AFAR

"Set among the rolling hills of the Shenandoah Valley, with views out toward the Blue Ridge Mountains, this cottage occupies the former wash house of a working orchard, and it’s filled with unique details that nod to its past: original farm lamps, orchard ladders, reclaimed wood countertops, and laundry-themed decor, like a coffee bar made from an antique ironing board. Guests are invited to gather fresh flowers, vegetables, and herbs from the gardens outside, or head to the orchard, a few steps away, for peaches and apples when they’re in season. (The hosts include their favorite apple pie recipe in the kitchen.) Also part of the 60-acre, second-generation Showalter’s Orchard is a hard cider tasting room." - Lyndsey Matthews, Nicholas DeRenzo

Google
The most adorable location with breathtaking views! Apple cider was absolutely delicious. They even had a non alcoholic apple cider option. Next door is a small coffee shop. You have to get the apple cider spiced latte! One of the smoothest coffees I’ve ever had.

Google
We stayed here with Harvest Hosts last night and thoroughly enjoyed it! We arrived and got our camper set up then went up to the greenhouse and did a tasting of all of their ciders. They were so delicious! Our favorites were Virginia Radler, Off The Press and Seasons Finish, we took home a case and 3 bottles to keep enjoying until we can make a trip back. The server did a wonderful job of keeping our tasting running smoothly while also helping other customers. The views here are incredible! We were here on a windy day but sitting inside the greenhouse with all of the windows we were still able to enjoy the stunning views. This place is definitely worth a trip!!

Google
Family owned business (circa 1965 iirc), producing and selling delicious ciders. The property is boarded with orchard, there is a greenhouse during winter, a covered patio and an indoor bar area. Staff is friendly, my personal recommendations are Fresh of the press (extra cold) for sweetness and Betwixt on the dryer side with more subtle notes I stopped by after hiking Big Schloss on a hot day and wholeheartedly recommend this place.

Google
What a great spot! We had tried the blackberry cider at Wisteria and liked it so much we decided to find the cidery. The place has beautiful views. Inside, we did a tasting with Jenny. She was friendly and very knowledgeable. The tasting room has also offers non-alcoholic slushes. They support other local businesses as well by selling candles, wines, & jams, etc. great place!

Google
Lovely spot to sit and enjoy some local cider while you watch the sunset! Not only are the views beautiful and the cider tasty, but we enjoyed our visit on a Pickin' Friday to listen to some good local live music. They had a food truck with some yummy grilled cheese and apple cider donuts.

Google
Great view of the valley and looks to be a nice wedding venue. One of the bigger orchards I have seen and the cider flights were a great value.

Google
Simply magnificent! I am no cider fan by any means of the word but I walked out of here buying 2 bottles and a growler! Their take on ciders and the level of craftsmanship that is imbued in every glass is able to be cherished with every sip. The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable about their products and one can sense their love for their craft even before they begin to tell you about their business. If you are ever anywhere within a few hours drive then I highly recommend making your way into Old Hill Cider.

Google
Wonderful place, don't miss this one if in the area. Friendly staff and they are very knowledgeable of their products and ciders. The quality of cider was excellent. We bought a few for our family Christmas. Nestled in a cozy area. Sit out on their patio and overlook the orchard while sipping on a cider!

Yelp
PRO TIP - IF GPS TAKES you to a place that seems sketch, just back out, then follow the alternate route. The alternate route will take you to the front entrance. What an amazing find. We happen to be driving back from the cavern tour we did and saw the sign on the highway. We decided to veer off and give it a try bc we have never been at a cidery. I'm so glad we did. First off, read the protip. We almost turned around b/c it seemed kinda weird where we ended up. Upon getting to the entrance, you'll be wowed by the landscape. It's quite beautiful out there. They are redesigning the store front and stuff so I'm sure at some point my review of the facility will be irrelevant. On that note, I'll get straight to the ciders. Seriously - wth I didn't know ciders could be this good! I've been trapped in the commercial world of sugary and sweet ciders. This place totally opened our eyes to the world of what's possible with ciders. We tried every cider, pet an amazing dog, bought a peck of apples, bought a bunch of ciders in bottles and cans, and even bought the glasses we tasted out of. Needless to say, we enjoyed our visit. If you haven't tried a cidery or this place, you MUST visit. It's a winner for sure. Food Taste: n/a Overall Service: 5 Value of food to cost: 5 Facility: 5 Ambiance: Small cottage bar feel. Very quaint and friendly. Repeat customer: yes Dog Friendly: yes

Yelp
Delicious crisp ciders with unique flavors and a light touch of sweetness. The ciders aren't sugary sweet like Angry Orchard or Bold Rock but not dry like the ciders down south in Charlottesville. The tasting is a great deal and I believe it's $5 for 5 tastings and you can pay extra for more samples. There are no flights. The Off the Press cider with no added sugar was quite sweet on its own and my favorite! My hubby enjoyed the peach and Honey Ginger cider. The cinnamon spiced Wassail cider was tasty and perfect for the fall and comes in larger 16 oz cans (4 pack is $14) while some of the other flavors like the Honey Ginger and Peach ciders come in smaller, 12 oz cans (4 pack for $11). We bought 3 packs - Wassail, Honey Ginger, and Off the Press (Peach was sold out!) and devoured them within a week! I wasn't a big fan of the Strawberry and Blackberry ciders. There's outdoor seating to soak in the sweeping views of the Shenandoah hillside and the beautiful fields and pastures! The indoor seating is a bit cramped for only a dozen or so people. There's a small market next door that sells produce and meat. The food truck sold cider donuts and some hot food and drinks, I wish the donut was hot (it was stone cold!). Love the cider and will be back when we're in the area!

Yelp
The location is gorgeous. However they have seasonal hours which were not posted on Yelp so the 30 minute scenic diversion served as a reminder to call before going anywhere. We likely won't be back in this area again and are sorry we missed them.

Yelp
Love this spot. Have been here multiple times over the years for apple picking (pick your own) and cider tasting. Lots of hard cider, pumpkins, apples, apple cider, pork, etc, to go. Great place to visit in the fall.

Yelp
I love hard cider so I knew this last was a must visit while on our trip, not to mention we stayed at one of the Airbnbs on site! There's plenty of seating inside and outside. The woman that was working was incredibly friendly and super helpful when trying to pick what flavor I wanted. I got a glass of the peach and the wassail. I think the wassail is the best cider I've ever had!! I highly reccomend that, especially if you happen to visit in the fall/winter, the spices just give you that holiday feel. I got wassail and the honey ginger to take home! My friend doesn't drink alcohol & they had sparkling cider that she had! So a little something for everyone here. If you visit, you should definitely get some apple cider donuts as well!

Yelp
We stopped by Old Hill Hard Cider on a rainy day for something to do while we were in the area. It is a very family friendly atmosphere with fresh apples on the tables, board games to play and non alcoholic cider for the kids. The lady behind the bar was very friendly and informative about the different options available. We did the flight and tried several different types of cider. We ultimately ended up with the Wassail and the bourbon barrel aged cider being our favorites. There is great seating inside but also a good size porch outside with seating as well. We really enjoyed our experience and we will be back on our next visit to the area.

Yelp
Ive been here twice and highly recommend it! I went on their Fall Harvest Day this time and it was so fun!!! They have lots of outdoor areas to sit (bring a blanket). You can bring food to eat while you're there, I always like making a charcuterie board. There are dogs running around like crazy and it was such a nice surprise!!! They're very well behaved and love lots of love from us! Their cider is really good too. Highly recommend the Off The Press Hard Cider. Their strawberry cider is really good too. They had apple cider donuts for the Fall Harvest Day and they were just okay in my opinion...still bought 1/2 a dozen though (:

Yelp
Wonderful selection of ciders and super friendly knowledgeable staff. Delicious! Thanks

Yelp
My girlfriend and I are very big fans of cider, so we made sure to find some in the area on our vacation to Shenandoah Valley. Old Hill Hard Cider exceeded our expectations. Despite some trouble in getting there thanks to Google Maps sending us off-road through their orchard, we finally made it. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable, and even gave us some tips to see other things in the area. We had their cherry-infused cider as well as their Off The Press, which were two of their sweetest offerings. Both were perfect, and reminded me of Sly Clyde near home. I wish I was able to try more as they had some pretty interesting offerings, but alas, COVID has struck again. No flights were offered at this time. The place itself is very beautiful. It's surrounded by the orchards with the mountains as the perfect backdrop. If I have the opportunity I will add more pictures from my DSLR camera at a future point in time. Definitely check this place out!

Yelp
It was a gorgeous fall day without a cloud in the sky. The cider is some the best I have ever had. Very fresh. We went home with two bottles of Betwixt which very tasty. Very nice staff. We went of a Thursday afternoon and there were a decent amount of people there but all safely spaced out. I was told that is can get packed on the weekends. There is a full orchard on site where you can pick your own apples. Amazing views for relaxing and enjoying some good cider.

Yelp
Great and friendly service. Tried the flight and got great suggestions from Sarah. Sat at bar and enjoyed talking to Sarah. Recommend checking out.

Yelp
Million dollar view while enjoying a pitcher of hard cider is tough to beat. We stopped by while RVing in the area. There was an old farm house with laundry hanging out to dry where we turned that gave us pause. But we found the tasting room just down the road. They let us sample the cider and we bought a pitcher and a donut and enjoyed the view. Great place to check out!

Yelp
I'm admittedly not a huge cider fan, but the service, views, and proximity to apple picking (when in season) make this a good choice. Old Hill is actually an orchard first which latter branched out into cider, so all their drinks are made from apples grown on the farm in front of you. A tasting includes a flight of 5 ciders for $5. Most were below 8% alcohol; whether that's a good or bad thing, that's up to the consumer! My favorite was the Season's Finish, which was the strongest of the bunch; it reminded me of a desert wine. Yesteryear wasn't bad either. Special thanks to the young lady who did my tasting. While she refused to call herself a 'cider expert', I think anyone who goes to every single cidery in Virginia to check out the competition deserves credit!

Duffman K.

Yelp
Ciders all very tasty and nice and helpful staff. First time going to a cidery but we were all happy we did. They let us try a few ciders before deciding on what we wanted. Glad we decided to come here.

Jenny C.

Yelp
Wonderful visit! The outdoor-ish seating and view was great, plus all of the ciders were phenomenal! (Wassail was a favorite) Your GPS may take you off course, there are signs, please follow them. I love the country chic setting in their greenhouse.

Jenifer R.

Yelp
So glad we found this place! Didn't have it come up in any searches online, but happened to notice it on a sign there. Great, local cider! Knowledgeable bartender. Very dog friendly! We were able to enjoy the views while our puppy ran around outside. My boyfriend doesn't really like to drink but there were two ciders he enjoyed so much that we bought growlers to take home. There's also a gorgeous greenhouse type building that stayed very warm and looks like it's made for a wedding venue? Very cute. There was even an English setter than came to play with our dog and didn't want him to leave.

Samantha M.

Yelp
Great variety of ciders. Love it! We got some dessert wine, and some very cool ciders to try.
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
Nothing fancy here. Peach and apple picking, very good cider on the patio. I was impressed by the range of offerings available. The cherry cider is a real treat.

Beckie H.

Yelp
Really awesome cider without gimmicky added flavors. The donuts are the bomb. The views are gorgeous and the people there are really nice and explain everything. Don't forget the donuts.
google avatar

Colleen G.

Yelp
Old Hill Cidery worth the stop if you're in the area! 5 dollar tasting to try all the ciders, very reasonably priced bottles and an adorable green house with everything you can think of. Greeted by everyone with smiling faces and a warm welcome.
google avatar

Mallory A.

Yelp
This Cidery is great! The view was great overall and the staff was fantastic. The ciders were each very unique from the next and it was relatively inexpensive for the amount of cider you received in the tasting - you also get to keep the wine glass! I would suggest placing the tables were the view isn't quite as obstructed. Otherwise, I have no complaints!

Mindy D.

Yelp
Went on Thursday and tried Betwixt cider. Loved the ambiance of the rocking chairs on the hill overlooking the orchard where folks were doing U pick apples. Got the canned variety pack of ciders to go to try (no samples right now). Enjoyed those so decided to get some more as gifts. They were out of off the press hard cider but had the other three flavors. It was quite busy on Saturday, but most people seemed to be picking apples so it was easy to stay socially distanced. I would definitely come back when in the area.
google avatar

Lana B.

Yelp
We love cider. We did a tasting and kept the glass for $8. They don't give you much of a pour. Maybe 1oz. Two small sips worth. I can't say I actually liked any of the ciders. The orchard is breath taking though. We bought a few things from the store but wish we could have taken home some of the apple cider (non alcoholic) home. We are flying home tomorrow morning so it is not possible. It was absolutely delicious with the spice they have for sale to make hot apple cider.
google avatar

Kris M.

Yelp
Home grown customer service and amazing cider. Can't ask for more than that. Definitely need to come out and try this place!
google avatar

Stacey T.

Yelp
Stopped here today for a tasting - great selection of ciders to please everyone's palate. We took home 1 Betwixt and 2 HoneyCysers. We will be back in the fall for Apple picking!
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
Great cider! Awesome time picking delicious apples. Friendly service, family owned with a family docs.
google avatar

Yelp
Old Hill Cider is the cidery affiliated with Showalter Orchard and Greenhouse. They make their own cider and you can sample 4-5 ciders: $3 to sample their 4 regular ciders and $5 to add a sample of their Season's Finish dessert cider. Their ciders are fantastic!! Very crisp and refreshing, no syrupy taste due to low residual sugar. You can buy the cider by the glass or bottle and then sit in rocking chairs overlooking the orchards. The staff are really nice and seem to enjoy telling people about their apples and ciders. They also have cornhole set up and you can buy apples and/or peaches that are in-season. I really wish I lived closer...
google avatar

Todd P.

Yelp
Often times there isn't a wide variety of flavors between ciders, especially when they're dry, but each one of Old Hill's hard ciders have a distinct character ranging from semi-dry to dry as well as flavored ciders and a sweet "ice" dessert cider. Their tasting is very generous for $5 with many standard ciders to try supplemented with seasonal extras that aren't on the tasting menu. Only drawback is that if the tasting room gets slammed, they aren't well equipped to handle it and had a little disorganization dealing with the crowd, but it's worth the wait.

Michael B.

Yelp
Looks like a good place to visit when open. Not open on Tuesdays. Great views. I had hoped to try their various ciders.
google avatar

Francesca R.

Yelp
Excellent cider! I saw the sign on the interstate and decided to stop in. I am so very glad I did! I highly recommend spending the extra $2 for the reserve tasting.

Sue S.

Yelp
What a great find in the Shenandoah Valley! Maybe small in size but huge in atmosphere & hospitality! So relaxing! We loved the Tasting Room as well as the Donuts & apples available to purchase in their small market. And the staff was incredibly friendly! So glad we found this place-- we'll be back!

Jessica L.

Yelp
The people here are so friendly and helpful. We aren't even cider people but found ourselves enjoying a bottle of Betwixt (it was great). Definitely a great stop.
