Yelp
The menu has German, Bavarian, and a few American dishes. So, why is it named Old House Cosmopolitan Grill? It doesn't make you think German food. Well, Chef Ivica Svalina owned Cosmopolitan Grill at 7770 Richmond Highway for 15 years. He bought this old house in 2018, renovated it, and moved his restaurant here. I brought my wife here to see if they have good German food. We tried 6 dishes and a beer.
Complimentary Bread
The bread had a crisp crust and spongy soft crumb. It had grill marks on it. You could taste the charred flavor on the crust. That was great! It had a hint of sweetness. They provide real butter that was lightly salted and soft. Nothing worse than hard butter for spreading on soft bread.
1) Goulash
This was a hearty paprika and tomato-based beef stew. It had slightly dry beef, carrots, onions, and celery. This was savory and well-rounded with balanced flavors from the beef, vegetables, spices, and seasonings. I recommend this!
2) Wurst platter
Bratwurst and Debreziner sausages served with homemade cheese spread and a pretzel. The sausages were grilled well. The bratwurst was unappealing. It had a blend of spices and herbs that was piney, earthy, and lemony. I've never cared for bratwurst, and this reinforced it. The debreziner sausage was spicy and well seasoned with flavors of garlic, paprika, and pepper. This was savory. The pretzel was hard on the outside, slightly chewy and dense inside. The flavor was like a good white bread. It came with spicy brown mustard and a homemade spread. The spread contained feta cheese, cream, and spicy peppers. It was crumbly and moderate in flavor.
3) Zuricher Geschnetzeltes
Chunks of veal sautéed in creamy mushroom sauce, served with spätzle.
The veal was slightly dry but tender. The mushroom sauce had a mild mushroom flavor, but not much else. There were grilled onions on top of the spätzle. That was good because the spätzle didn't have much flavor. The texture was like dense soft corkscrew noodles. Overall, this dish was dull and lacked depth.
4) Cordon bleu
Pork schnitzel stuffed with ham and cheese, lightly breaded and fried, served with roasted potato. The potatoes were lightly charred on top and topped with finely chopped parsley. It was lightly seasoned and tasted great. The schnitzel had a good fried flavor. The pork and ham were moist, tender, and savory with extra umami from the cheese. It was served with slices of tomato, lemon, and raw onions.
5) Apfelküchle
This was apple rings, batter coated and fried in oil, served with vanilla ice cream. The apple rings were too thin which made them hard to taste. The coatings were soft and moist instead of crisp. They were slightly sweet. Tip to the owner: coat them with cinnamon and sugar for more sweetness and flavor. The vanilla ice cream was rich in flavor by comparison. It was luscious and creamy with a great vanilla bean flavor.
6) Rose Hip Marmalade Crepes
Rosehips are the fruit from the rose plant. The red jam was rolled inside two crepes and plated with 2 dollops of swirled fresh whipped cream. The cream was very light with a hint of sweetness. The crepes were thin, mildly sweet, and fried lightly. The jam had a sweet, citrusy berry flavor. We liked it, but weren't impressed. They offer a Nutella filling as an alternative.
Paulaner Hefeweizen
A German wheat beer that had a medium body and some carbonation. It was fruity and malty with notes of citrus, banana, and a hint of bitterness. A good tasting beer that's easy to drink.
Our server, David, was very helpful, polite, attentive, and responsive. Outstanding! The dining room and restrooms were clean. There are 3 dining rooms and a roof terrace dining area. One room is on the 1st floor and 2 rooms and the terrace are on the 2nd floor. There is a small bar with 13 seats. The atmosphere was calm and relaxing. We haven't been to many German restaurants. With that caveat, I can say that this is the best German food that we have had. Granted, goulash originated in Hungary, crepes originated in France, and cordon bleu originated in Switzerland; but Germany has their versions of each. I had to try them because some reviewers raved about them.
