13 Places for Pumpkin Dishes and Drinks in Denver | Eater Denver

"This Highland favorite is serving a delicate pumpkin risotto this fall that is a notable departure from the restaurant’s usual focus on all things butchered. It’s made with beech mushrooms, mascarpone, and chili pepitas (pumpkin seeds) and is a rare vegetarian option on one of the most meat-centric menus in town." - Rebecca Treon

I was taken here on a date last night. I'm almost never full from a meal out! This place will sell you REAL food. I almost never see long grain rice properly cooked in restaurants. In the curry, in the sausage peppers, beans and rice. So good! The bar fair was done right as well. The jerk chicken tots have cheese and chicken layered in the perfect ratios keeping the tots crispy till the end. I loved dipping them in the shrimp mango curry (not pictured). Drinks were a great value and suuuuuper tasty. The staff was extremely kind. This place truly is a treasure and definitely goin to be a neighborhood staple for me.

I had the soup. My friends had other dishes. We love going around town to the hidden golden nuggets of Baltimore. The food excellent! The place is a treasure. TEACHERS, This place is a great meet up location. Great seating make this place a great gathering or meeting place. As. Notary this is closer than some major fast foods to meet with customers for their signings.

This place is a gem,fr. The folks who work here are friendly, it's a chill vibe with bar and cafe tables, tasty strong cocktails, and really good food! Literally so excited for my shrimp curry leftovers rn. They also have recurring events like karaoke, anime night, live music, poetry readings, and can accommodate hosting personal events.

Honestly, 5 stars isn’t enough. The food was outstanding and authentic. The yuca bites and the jackfruit flatbread were my favorite. I’m not a huge drinker but if you are they have some great options for that. Everyone at my table raved about the drinks. I love that they have different seating areas depending on what vibe you’re going for that day. Their ordering system it my favorite as it allows you time to really look at the menu without having to wait for a server to come once you’ve made your decision. I can’t believe I’ve lived in Baltimore this long and never been!

Been here a bunch for Highwire Improv shows. Always a good time.I’ve had dinner and drinks there before a show and never had to rush. They’ve got a full menu with solid food that comes out quick. I always recommend the plantains. Just really good! I’ve had dinner and drinks there before a show and never had to rush. The crew behind the bar is delightful, like genuinely friendly in a way that makes the space feel welcoming. Plenty of parking right out front, which makes it easy to just show up. They host a ton of other stuff too, like Silent Book Club, art events, all kinds of community hangouts. It’s one of those places that feels like it wants you to stick around.

Google
- incredible ambience - extremely friendly and attentive bartenders - tasty food (highly recommend the plantains, tots with jerk pork, and eggplant stew) - lots of non-alcoholic drink options - fun event space; watched a movie upstairs with the Bmore Horror Club

Excellent destination in Pigtown. Great food and drinks and attentive, comfortable service. This restaurant also hosts a variety of events including film, literary readings and comedy. A hidden gem in Baltimore, and worth the visit whether you’re coming from down the street or across town.

What a hidden little gem in the middle of Pig Town, Baltimore! Really didn’t expect to walk into this joint but so glad I did. Cocktail game is 100% crafty and they have weekly events that pack the place up! Management is on top of every detail and it shows. The honey old bay wings were fantastical 🔥🔥🔥 Anticipating my next visit 🙂

Yelp
I'm a major fan of Old Major...okay that was terrible. You know what's not terrible? Old Major. It is the perfect neighborhood bar. The owners are very welcoming and foster a familial environment. Drinks and food are very reasonably priced--and delicious. I had the shrimp mango curry with rice and it was excellent. This is before I even get into their various themed nights. From karaoke to movie nights to silent book clubs, they have a little something for everyone. I highly recommend!

Yelp
Old Major is a delightful place I've been going to since shortly after they opened in 2018. It is a well renovated bar/restaurant in my neighborhood and I've quite enjoyed walking there recently. Initially, I was a big wine drinker and found this place had a great selection of reds, whites, and pinks. The past few years however, I've been super into craft beer and was pleasantly surprised by the offerings on tap AND some really good stuff housed in those little under bar fridges! My last 2 visits I ordered food, the spicy baingan which is ABSOLUTELY delicious! I looked up the recipe online and it seems like a lot of work so Old Major has a customer for life just for that dish, lol! Otherwise, I'm really a fan of the bar owner, Candice. Just about every time I've visited, she's there and not only provides excellent customer service, but is a very cool chick and I like talking to her about...well, everything! Old Major ticks all my boxes for convenience, quality, and customer service. Of course I'll visit again!

Yelp
This has been on my list since I moved to the neighborhood recently. Finally stopped by with a couple friends last week. It gave speakeasy vibes since we had to ring a bell for entry but I think that may be more for safety. Immediately I fell in love with the decor. It was curated so thoughtfully. We sat at the bar and chatted with the owner's sister as she wore many hats that evening. Service was a bit slow but that was understandable after the owner shared it was far busier than expected. I enjoyed the drink I had and my friends seemed to enjoy their food. Also, not sure if this was due to COVID changes but we were able to order and pay directly from our phones. A nice and convenient touch. I'll be back to support soon.

Yelp
Old Major holds their weekly Baltimore Food Giveaway. You are encouraged to bring your own bags and boxes for the food.. Fresh fruit and produce is offered for you to select. Old Major is a nice size pub. There is a lounge area in the back. I am looking for to visiting Old Major in the near future.

Yelp
Okay so first and foremost, THANK YOU! Y'all opened hours early to serve those of us who spent our morning cleaning the blocks of Pigtown. Candice you are wonderful and I appreciated your conversation. We will definitely be back. It's all about supporting local! Wait: None, which was awesome! Server: Jamie was wonderful. She did amazing serving all of us and getting everything out quickly. She was very sweet. I know that can be hard to do when serving so many people at once. Much appreciated! Food Quality& Order: So, we all noted that the spice has been KICKED UP! It was awesome! My Old Bay Tots and Curry Chicken were both perfection. The Curry Chicken was tender, savory, and spicy. I couldn't ask for more. It was pleasantly spicy. Will order again and again. My Charm City Basil& Lemongrass Mead was delicious. So glad to be served local goods! Atmosphere& Decor: I love it. It's dive bar-ish. There are board games, a pool table, occasional Karaoke. It's Maryland pride shines through in the decor used. The back patio is somewhere I hope to see more of in the Spring.

Yelp
Yesterday was my second time at this place as I had gone once before for karaoke and food. There is an older woman and a younger woman who told me they were the owners. The first time I went it was slow and they complained about wanting to go home while continuing to serve us with a bad attitude. I figured everyone has a bad day so I met friends there yesterday and was appalled at how we were treated. We had a table of about 8 and 4 of us ladies ordered very easy drinks. After waiting awhile, the older owner very rudely came to our table and asked us to write the drink orders down. Strange but ok. We ordered 2 sangrias, a Tito's and splash of seltzer and another plain seltzer. Half hour later three of our drinks came. All incorrect. They mixed seltzer with the sangria that tasted like just skunky old cheap wine. The person that ordered the Tito's only got seltzer. And the plain seltzer for me came 15 more minutes later. Maybe this is because she was irritated I did not order alcohol. We asked for them to be remade as our note was legible and clear. They would not. They also said that we would be paying for them. One of the gentleman with us gave his card to his gf to just take care of the bill so we could leave. She paid the bill but left no tip. Nobody drank their drinks and they were rude. The owner takes the check to the gentleman asking if he was ok with her leaving no tip. She began to berate us as we walked out. I'll never go back here again. I heard other customers complaining to the owner and she said 'just don't come back'. Don't worry, the food wasn't fresh and was over cooked last time. This place will not be open long if they don't hire more staff and get those two nasty women off of the front line. I've never been treated more poorly. Edited after the owners response with slander. Neither me or anyone I was with smoke marijuana anywhere. If someone invited me and both times I order club soda what difference does it make who spends the money. I can spend money wherever I choose and your rinky dink spot is not a place I choose. I can prioritize what I choose and when I am drinking I know that any ounce pour will melt ice and I tasted her pure seltzer water. Attacking my palate is a nice touch. Shows your character...nasty. I was very friendly to you the first time. The second, I had nothing to say because of your attitude. We smoked cigarettes in your smoking section. If you thought it was marijuana I'm sure you would've called the police. Like you threatened to do to a member of the band that you had performing. It's not your customers fault you are always short staffed. Stop making bad drinks , poor quality food and invest in more staff because the two of you aren't the definition of hospitality. The person that paid the check is my best friend and the only reason you care about his money is because you keep getting over in him knowing he's too drunk to make sound decisions. So you overcharge him and he overtips you because that's who he is. He patronized your spot because it's walking distance to his new house. Not because it's a great place. I don't smoke weed. None of us do. That my dear is defamation of character. Grow up and take some hospitality classes and maybe even a serve safe for your dirty restrooms. My money is spent in all over Baltimore. I'm glad it was never spent at yours. If I can help it, nobody else I know will waste theirs on your dump. Grow up and i do not need your childish response.

Yelp
Great spot. I never had a problem with parking. There is street parking and I hear there's a lot close by you can use. Everyone is very welcoming there. These days I'm not big on bars but it doesn't even seem like a typical bar it seems like a hang out spot/bar. The food there is really good. They offer a wide variety but what I was happy about is that they offer West Indian/Caribbean options. Every bit of it is delicious. The drinks are to compliment as well. My favorite drink there is the sangria caribe. Definitely make sure you try it. There is seating area in the back for eating. Something that I thought I thought was cool is that they have board games in the back as well. Honestly I think this bar is for all types of crowds.

Yelp
A pleasure, and pleasant surprise. I've visited on three occasions, on the second one the bartender had committed my drink to memory and remembered my name. Great service! There is always a friendly, informative conversation to be had at the bar, the food is visually appealing, tasty, and moderately priced. Old Major gets two thumbs up!
google avatar

Veronica J.

Yelp
Great location and the place was very nicely decorated. The space was ample enough to use several areas in/outside the bar. The prices very extremely high for a neighborhood bar and there were no happy hour specials. The food wasn't that great to say I received quality in comparison to the price. The waiter was extremely slow and the owner had a very bad attitude. We waited over 60 minutes for subpar wings and a coke that cost $24. No joke I had 8 wings/$16 and $3.50 coke plus gratuity and tax. Never again!!!!

Stephen F.

Yelp
The owners of this bar are friendly and the drinks are fantastic, had the Guyanese chicken curry and the Baltimore rising mixed drink. OUTSTANDING!

Yelp
The food at Old Major expands beyond your typical bar fare. The jerk wings will make your mouth pop and the true Caribbean spices may make you sweat if you aren't used to real flavor! Caribbean owner Candice will greet you at the door and gently encourage you to expand your palate with tropical delights such as the wild salmon cakes or okra sans slime. But don't worry, she has the traditional fan favs (burgers, fries, cheese flatbread). It's a place to enjoy a game with folks or host an event. Jamie the bartender can fix any type of drink and if she can't, she can improvise and you would not even know it!

Yelp
This bar came Highly Recommended from my boyfriend whom recently moved in the area, near by. After meeting him and 8 other friends at Old Major, we were met with incompetent staff (This included the Bar's Owner) that got All of my boyfriend's party drinks all wrong! After addressing the drink errors with the Barmaid that tended our table, she became very belligerent and told everyone that if we wanted any drinks, after the fact, we would have to come around to the bar. Afterwards, when it came time to pay my Boyfriend's tab, he gave me the credit card and asked me to talk to the owners about the discrepancies that had occurred while he went out to the patio to smoke. So, I went to the bar to talk to owners about the drink discrepancies and the conversation went "Left"! To make a Long story short, one of the owners talked to me in a very Nasty, Condescending manner regarding the wrong drinks served by saying "... it was our fault due to how it was written on the tab!" I explained to her, being that she was the owner, that we should Only pay for the drinks if they were received correctly and she said, "No!" while taking the tab outside to my boyfriend. When she returned, she told me that my boyfriend said to pay the tab, in which I did without adding a tip because of her Poor Customer service and De-escalation skills while never getting the correct drinks for the party! Basically, if you come to this bar and happen to have a problem with your food or drink, you too would be met with an unprofessional outcome of paying for something that you never received in the first place!

Yelp
My book club chose Old Major as the restaurant for our book discussion. This place was sooo good, plus it's owned by a black woman!!! I love the fact that the owner accommodated all of us and even included a special drink menu. I would say that the food is Caribbean style. I ordered the honey old bay wings and a side of eggplant. Everything was made to order and very fresh. I also like that they have a bar that serves craft cocktails. If you're looking for an establishment that has good customer service, fresh food, and has an emphasis on community engagement check this spot out.

Yelp
First time here and its small but worth the trip if you know where to find this place. Small bar last time i went but the drink selection is good. The bartender was helpful. The food didn't take forever coming out. And for that if I can come back again I will.

Yelp
Just moved into the neighborhood and found this wonderful place! Came here with a friend my first time and had two rum punches with a side of buffalo wings. Food menu has Jamaican options like curry chicken and I also saw vegan dishes as well...you guys know Im a fake vegan so I will be back to try. Drinks were good and gave me a buzz which is always a good thing. My 2nd time was this past Tuesday. A friend and I came in for a drink for his birthday. Aiden (idk if this is correct spelling) who was my bartender again gifted us with a free shot that he made up. I had a pretty tequila cocktail ...which was strong but good at same time. I was drunk omw home smh..Im a light weight sorry guys . LOL I will visit this place a lot more often.

Yelp
This place was cute. It has at least three floors with plenty of space.I was here during a BYP party. It was extremely crowded and the bartenders tried their best. The food is even amazing along with the drinks and they have great happy hours too. I actually can't wait to go back on a regular night to get the real feel at the bar. Try the Jerk chicken wings. They are a little spicy so if you are not used to that spicy kick than you may want to order a glass of milk. I will most definitely be back :-)

Yelp
I think I've found a new spot! After constantly seeing posts about this hidden gem on Instagram, a friend and I decided to stop by for happy hour. Firstly, I'd like to commend the owner Candice. She was short-staffed and had to bartend and serve on her own, which is something that an owner normally wouldn't do. I felt welcomed as soon as I crossed the threshold. She was warm, friendly and informative about items on both the normal and happy hour menus. She also informed us of daily events at Old Major in which I plan on attending. Now on to the food.... I was not aware that Old Major served mostly Caribbean dishes, but no complaints since I enjoy Caribbean cuisine. I ordered a Rum Punch($6), Curry Chicken Salad Wrap($7) and Old Bay Tots($5) from the happy hour menu. All were tasty. I really enjoyed the Rum Punch's natural fruit taste. I could see the Curry Chicken Salad Wrap becoming a fave of mine. I am looking forward to patronizing Old Major in the near future. Thanks for the hospitality Candice!

Yelp
This is the second time I've been to Old Major. It's a fairly new spot In a residential neighborhood. I've enjoyed the music (but both times I've been here "Stoop Nerds" have been responsible for the music selections). Thought it's a smaller establishment, service has been okay and the staff seemed to be very attentive.

Yelp
Old Major is a cute corner neighborhood dive bar. It's recently been refurbished, so it's very clean with a fresh coat of paint on everything. It's a great place to drink, with a good selection of beers on tap and by the can. It's pretty roomy, too, with a separate seating area with some electronic games to play. The food is terrible, make no mistake. They have Hot Dogs, which is nice to see, but their chili clearly comes from a can. We also tried their Samosas and Falafel Balls, which both came from a frozen bag. Okay, fine, it lacks pretention, but boy howdy.

Christopher B.

Yelp
Service: front staff at the bar was nice however didnt seem familiar with the menu, almost over charged us, and just not very professional for a food service establishment. Food: we had a take out order of curry shrimp and mango in addition to a jerk chicken roti with Channa. The curry shrimp lacked flavor and so did the Channa (taste was watery with curry, no other flavor). The roti for the jerk chicken was hard and difficult to chew, which is not reflective of Caribbean cuisine. The chicken was juicy and very spicy, which to me was the one good thing. I gave it one star because the food and the service are lacking, those are the two most critical elements.

Kenitra L.

Yelp
This my first visit to this establishment and definately the last. I am very big on customer service as it is the poster to the place. I was invited there by a friend on Friday. When I got there I felt the place was pretty cool and something cooking smelled wonderful. The friend that invited me is a neighborhood regular that is no slouch when running a tab. Upon sitting for at least 15mins he went to the bar to get my group (3 ladies) a drink. He came back with a posted note and instructed us to write down what we wanted to drink. I found this insane as I had never experienced this is any other bar that I have been. However we wrote tito with some seltzer (2) red sangrias and below the sangrias a straight seltzer. 15 mins. later we received the drinks and they were all incorrect. I had one of the red sangrias that tasted like seltzer and my sister complained of the same. We both pushed the drinks to the middle of the table as they were not drinkable. My cousin that ordered the tito and seltzer whom also wrote the note complained that the full glass was just seltzer as she tasted no tito. So originally thought she had given the wrong drink to my best friend that dont drink that ordered the straight seltzer. Of course she never tried hers afraid that it had the titos in it. When the waitress came to serve the table next to ours we informed her that the drinks where incorrect and the 2 sangrias just didnt taste good. She responded "yall will just have to come to the bar because I am getting confused" in a very nasty tone. At that point I was ready to leave as her attitude was unacceptable. 3 of the 4 of us went to the outside smoking section to smoke a cigarette but my cousin stayed at the table to clarify the drink situation. While outside smoking another waitress that announced that she was the owner came with the bill wanting to know who wrote the note and explained that the red sangria was mixed with seltzer as it was on the note. We all reviewed the note and explained that there were 4 lined items and the seltzer was a separate drink which had to be known otherwise they would have served 3 drinks instead of 4. While trying to explain this to the owner she yelled "well yall are going to pay this bill" as she turned to walk back in. She approached the neighborhood regular as she know he spends well there to tell him that he had to pay for all the drinks even though they were all still full and left on the table. He gave his card to his gf to pay for the drinks and the owner got very angry that although he said to just pay the bill because he dont like conflicts his gf did not tip. The owner began yelling asking the neighborhood regular if he was ok with her not leaving a tip. By this time the group of us was exiting with the owner claiming that the drinks were correct while also arguing with another 2 ladies sitting at the bar and threatened to call the police. After we all left disguisted the neighborhood regular apologized to all of us that he had invited us for such a horrible experience. One that cost him extra money as she did not remove the drinks that we didnt drink. I am not here to bash but just to explain that this is not very good customer service and no one she go out to have a good time and leave with a negative experience. One of my friends decided it was necessary to write a review in which the owner responded with slander and character deflamation. As if the experience wasnt bad enough her claiming that we all "were all in her smoking section smoking weed without permission" is outlandish. To say the least if this the case why didnt she call the authorities to report such behavior that could affect her business? I dont tell anyone not to support a business because you could have a very different experience, but please pay close attention to the owner (Candiace) responses to all of the not so good reviews. She is very defensive, insulting and deflective. No one is trying to bash you but we do have a right to express the concerns. You could better your establishment by accepting peoples feedback, not attack their character even not knowing them. Keep in mind the patrons is who keeps your doors open. The only response necessary is I apologize that you had this experience, and strive to do better! Not the insulting responses that you have offered, its very unprofessional!
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
Could of been A LOT better but... The owner seems to really care when something is less than par and seems to be striving to improve the business for the better. It is much appreciated by the customer.

Darlisha B.

Yelp
Update to Candace response. Candace, When my husband and I went to your restaurant there was only 2 customers at the bar and we were the only guest in the dining area during happy hour. The restaurant was empty. The bartender was male from Puerto Rica I believe. NEVER HAVE MY HUSBAND AND I BEEN DIFFERENT TO DEAL WITH. If we don't like something and in this case, the food at your restaurant was substandard, we just cut our losses. Dispite leaving your estuarant hungry and disappointed we are never difficult. Thank for your response, lesson learned.

Yelp
Surprisingly diverse beer selection (including literally EVERYTHING local), good wings and they show esports on the TV's in the bar! https://i.imgur.com/lwk4j2D.jpg https://i.imgur.com/TpVRJXj.jpg

Yelp
Stopped by Old Major after a long day of work not knowing what to expect. Seemed to be plenty of parking spots nearby on a kinda rainy Thursday night. Was welcomed by friendly staff members who showed me to a seat at their bar. Ordered the eggplant appetizer which was absolutely delicious, and two cocktails. Both cocktails were excellent! Spent some time chatting with the owner and her sister, you can tell there is a lot of love and pride in the business. Nice atmosphere, great food, excellent vibes. Can't wait to return :)

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. First and foremost, the food is DELICIOUS!! I would come here solely for the Caribbean food any day. The owner and bartenders are always super sweet, and everything is reasonably priced. They also have lots of events. So glad to have this place in my neighborhood!

Yelp
Awesome place. Bartender is awesome Good food, and good times are definitely t9 be had

Yelp
5 stars just because of Candice alone! I can appreciate a hard working, super nice woman.

Yelp
Extremely wonderful place. The bar tenders are superb! They are extremely friendly. The food great. I am always excited to have the loaded tots.

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood. Good cocktails, nice beer list, cute patio, and friendly service.

Yelp
Went there and heard a few locals arguing. There was a weird mold smell and the bathrooms (BOTH men's and women's) had water/urine on the floor. The "pig town" target decor was pandering to me, I won't be coming back.

Dawn C.

Yelp
This has been an amazing first!! Bridal shower upstairs today but Jamie has taken us to the beach with her Coco Libra 8 and her distinctive spin on the New Orleans Hurricane! Get rid of Old Man Winter and come down for food, drinks, and good vibes in a local spot.

Yelp
I mean what can I say, new food menu, new cocktails and a rock star staff. Come on down to Old Major, we're waiting for you. Eat, drink & have fun.

Tyasia F.

Yelp
Unsatisfied again sadly. Bartender could not make a old fashioned or a orange crush... typical drinks ordered at normal bars. Haggelers coming in selling random items. This time it was cleaning supplies. If they want a good establishment they need to put a real kitchen in there so my can came out properly cooked. My wings were almost raw yet again. Sad to see a place with potential fail. Looks as if it's going down hill. There were only four people at the bar and they still allowed people to come in selling goods. Not to mention the bathroom was pretty gross and had a weird odor.

Lauren W.

Yelp
Went to Old Major for the second time last night and have nothing but good things to say about this quintessential neighborhood bar. Everything I want in a local corner pub. Bartender Aiden was so friendly and mixes a mean rum punch. My friend and I split the channa, old bay honey wings, and curry tots. Everything was good but I'd highly recommend the curry tots. Happy hour specials made our bill crazy cheap for the amount of food we got. Just really solid Caribbean-influenced comfort food. The overall crowd and vibe is laid-back, diverse and fun. Looking forward to spending more time here, especially for football season.

Kelly G.

Yelp
After reading some of these $hitty reviews, I had to stop in and give the place 5 stars. Mark(?) makes an amazing gin/ginger/jalapeno concoction. The honey old bay wings are delicious. I won't lie, there are some items on the menu that I'd love to try, but I don't trust the authenticity...just saying...as much as I love potato salad, I don't eat everybody's. Nevertheless, this is my favorite neighborhood bar and I'm still hoping for earlier daytime hours in the near future.

Lynn H.

Yelp
Gave this place yet another late night chance.... disappointed as ever. Food was disgusting ...bartender was nodding off on drugs she could barely keep her eyes open... not a great way to spend my third night off... I gave this place a third and final shot its creepy and odd going into a place where you are one the only 6 customers...and the bartender is high. This place is yet again another Baltimore failure... I had high Hope's for this neighborhood now I want to sell asap.

J H.

Yelp
Lovely space, you need to stop for a visit. Support this local business! Our neighborhood needs places like this to not only improve it, but to give us a place to meet new friends.

Yelp
I love this place alot the vibes here are so positive and it's definitely worth the trip to come visit ,,, the food is great the drinks are very good so I definitely recommend you all to try this place out
