15 Warming Dishes For Big Coat Season - London - The Infatuation

"Some restaurants toy with winter warmers in the same way we briefly indulge the idea of a ski holiday in the midst of eating fridge-aged camembert in bed. But The Yellow Bittern in King’s Cross is committed to its Austenian breed of comfort food and analogue escapism 365 days a year. The blackboard menu of British-Irish dishes changes regularly but you can expect the likes of cottage pie, champagne-soaked pigeon pie, and a Dublin coddle that is not a pie, but does involve a supremely mood-boosting stew." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak

Our first dinner in Dublin, the reviews and photos looked amazing was the reason of choosing this place. There was queue when arriving however it was worth the wait as it was small space upstairs. They had all the traditional Irish cuisine including a FULL Flour Free Menu! We had the Famous Irish Lamb Shank and Traditional Irish Stew. They are absolutely delicious and taste buds was more than happy. It felt like pure enjoy eating them. The lamb shank was melting like butter and mind you Irish butter is freaking amazing. The flavor was outstanding. The traditional Irish stew was our favorite dish of all time. We would totally come to this spot. We for sure came back again one last time the night before we had to fly back home. As we didn’t know when we will be back. I tried the cottage pie and let me tell you… exquisite and my partner had to get the Irish stew again. Overall, you have to go here :)

Google
Fantastic first meal in Dublin. The place is oozing with character and history. I had a burger and it was excellent!! The server was great. The manager noticed I had on a Harley hat on and gave me directions to the nearby Harley shop. Pretty cool!! Fairly reasonable prices. You are packed in there like sardines but that to me just adds to the experience!! Well done!!

Google
Do yourself a favour and RUN to get this food. My husband and I had the lamb shank and Guinness stew. I’m not a lamb fan at all, but tasted some and it was incredible. The stew needs a higher rating. The service was the best I’ve had, they always check on you make sure you have what you need. The place was lovely. Can’t wait to come back one day and eat here again.

Came to the Old Mill Restaurant in Dublin to try some traditional Irish food and really enjoyed it! The Irish Breakfast was one of my favourite meals there — full of flavour and very satisfying. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the staff were friendly and attentive. If you’re looking for authentic Irish cuisine in a great setting, this place is definitely worth a visit!

Google
The Old Mill Restaurant is a wonderful place to enjoy traditional Irish food in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The menu offers a great variety of dishes, all freshly prepared and full of flavor. Portions are generous, and the quality is excellent. The service is attentive and friendly, making you feel right at home. With its cozy interior and authentic charm, it’s the perfect spot for a memorable meal in Dublin.

Google
We enjoyed the authentic cottage pie. It was so hearty and rich. I absolutely loved it. It paired well with my cider. The atmosphere was wonderful. Everyone was so courteous and friendly despite being really busy with a cruise ship in port. I would seek this place out again the next time I was in town because there were so many choices on the menu I wanted to try.

Google
Fish and chips were great. Super crunchy and crispy. The homemade tartar sauce was excellent as well. Worth going. The place is quite small so there will probably be a wait depending on the time of day. When we got there we waited for maybe 5 min but as we were leaving there was a line down the stairs out the door.

Google
I tried the early bird menu for €27 and overall the experience was good especially the character of the site, customer interaction & superb location. The seafood chowder was nice & tasty, packed full of flavours & ingredients although some of the chunks of fish were a bit tough. The Guinness stew was also tasty with nice sauce but some of the beef chunks were a little bit dry & tough. My partner really enjoyed her lamb shank & pint of Guinness. All dishes were served nice & warm which was appreciated. The house Italian red by the glass (Solandia Nero D'Avola) was very disappointing & served at such a high temperature that it was unpleasant. I have tried before elsewhere the other red by the glass, Sangre de Torre which is much better. The service from all the waiting staff is excellent including the brave Lais who is a great Street ambassador ! (See picture).

Yelp
An incredible vibrant, typical Dublin pub restaurant it's a must go. You're immediately greeted by a lovely server who just wants to help and serve so we started with glass of wine for Deb and a big old Guinness for Peter loved it. Deb had mussels that were fantastic And I had the Guinness beef stew like 4 pounds of it so good and we got our bill gave a nice tip and said goodbye and see you soon. Great night.

Yelp
Lucky we came here early as it got packed as we were leaving with a long line up the stairs. We walked in, sat down and were helped right away. Seated in the corner, there wasn't a free table. This was a good sign. We were offered drinks and they came out very quickly. Wife ordered the Guinness stew and I ordered the lamb shank. The lamb was super tender and tasted great. The stew was packed with flavor. Overall, our meal was great. A touch expensive for what we had see around the area but good none the less. If you are looking for some traditional Irish food, stop in here. They did have a taste of ireland menu that did look good.

Yelp
Amazing traditional Irish restaurant near the river. Our first meal after arriving in Dublin and it was hearty portions of traditional Irish staples served during the lunch hour. Quick service with friendly banter and great food recommendations. Our entire table was pleased with the quality and taste of all the different dishes we ordered. The Old Mill Restaurant is a classic old school restaurant with wooden floors and Irish decor everywhere. Bring your appetite, as the portion sizes are large. First meal in Ireland and it was delicious!!

Yelp
If you are in the Temple Bar area, you must check out The Old Mill. It serves the traditional Irish dishes that are hearty and good. My fish & chips were better than most fish & chips that I had in Ireland. My wife's mussel & soup were fresh and tasty. The staff was friendly but overwhelmed during this particular dinner time. They are always busy. Therefore, make sure to make a reservation before you go.

Yelp
I attempted to go for dinner at the Old Mill on my first night in Dublin but the wait was over an hour when I arrived. I have to say, the service while waiting in line was pretty impressive. There was a guy asking people if they wanted drinks while waiting and made sure to update us on table availability while we waited. I was too hungry to wait too long so I left after about 20 minutes, but I made sure to make a reservation for the following day. When I went back the next night it was even busier than the previous evening due to a couple of very large groups. Again, service was amazing despite the crazy amount of people. I had to wait a few minutes after my reservation time but it was completely fine as I had already looked at a menu in line so I ordered as soon as I sat down. I opted for the seafood chowder and mussels combo - exactly what I was craving! I also started with a pint of Guinness. My food arrived after a very reasonable wait and let me tell you.... it was so good! The chowder was packed with all types of seafood and perfectly seasoned. The mussels were not the best in terms of size, as they were kind of small but cooked well. The broth was exceptional and had some beautiful brown bread on the side to dip in and soak up all that deliciousness. As mentioned, the restaurant was packed so it was pretty noisy but not overwhelming. The staff did an amazing job of manœuvering tables and people to accommodate different size groups and were incredibly efficient at clearing and cleaning tables as people left. It's no wonder this place is so popular; it's not just the location, it's the food and service that make this place worth the visit. Highly recommended!

Yelp
It's a tourist trap. Just know that going in. Pretty steep steps to go up but staff is efficient in getting you seated in a very cozy dining area. I loved the vibes. The staff was swift and friendly. The sides are extra so don't expect to get mash with your stew unless you order it. However, the brown bread was *chefs kiss*. Best I had during my trip. They do ask you to tip fyi. So know that while other local pubs do not. It does get busy but don't give up on it if you want to enjoy the space.
google avatar

Eunie L.

Yelp
The restaurant is located upstairs of a building. It's a pretty small restaurant. The service was quick and friendly. It may have also helped that we came in right before the lunch rush. After we ordered, right before noon, it quickly filled up. Ordered the seafood chowder which was great! I would highly recommend it. Full of seafood and very comforting. The fish and chips were alright. The fried fish was under seasoned. The Irish breakfast was decent and had the classic flavors.

Yelp
Traditional Irish fare in the heart of Temple Bar area. This was our first meal after a long day of traveling and it gave us that comfort we needed so much! Had to start our trip with a traditional Cottage Pie -- with portions large enough to split amongst 2. Comes with a wonderful gravy on the side that really ties the dish together. Be prepared some very flavorful food! Washed it down with a pint of Smithwick's, as one does, and before you know it we were on our way to a pub for some live music. The restaurant is upstairs, with some decently steep stairs, so please be careful! Service was excellent, food was served quickly, and the atmosphere was great. We hear the place gets really packed for dinner service, but we walked right in on a Wednesday at 6:30pm.

Yelp
What a charming spot in the Temple Bar area! Due to the location, I was afraid it would be a tourist trap, but honestly it was fabulous. We came in looking for traditional Irish food and landed on the Cottage Pie (like a Shepherd's Pie but with beef instead of lamb). Split between two hungry adults, this was more than enough! It was hearty and warmed our souls on a rainy February evening. The staff was polite and we left completely satisfied. Note the location is on the second level so you have to go up a significant number of steep steps. I wouldn't want to try going back down after more than a single pint!

Yelp
Absolutely loved dining at the Old Mill Restaurant while visiting Dublin. On a Wednesday night we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table but it was well worth it. The food was spectacular especially the Guinness Irish beef stew. The live music set a classic and lighthearted Irish pub atmosphere. Highly recommend for the Temple Bar region!

Yelp
When we arrived there was a slight wait. We were able to grab a Guinness at the bar and the bartender was very quick. We got seated about 10 minutes later, the food wait time was also fast, and our server was able to get us in and out of there. Our meals were wonderful. The cheesy garlic toast was a great appetizer too. By the time we left there was a line down the stairs. I would suggest going early! Good portions and tasty dishes.
google avatar

Yelp
Expect wait time if you come during weekend. Is a small restaurant but mighty. The food is excellent and authentic. My Irish friend suggested me this place and definitely didn't disappoint me. Wish I can try a few more dishes, everything looks delicious.

Yelp
Went to Dublin a few months ago and on my first day I arrived hungry and wanting proper Irish food and walking around all the templer bars I found this place thanks to Yelp and it did not disappoint!!! It was super packed and it's not large but it fits a good amount of people who were all enjoying time with family so the vibe is friendly and fun and we got lucky to get seats right away and wow we were blown away at the food especially having theee best fish and chips I've had and it was in Ireland not England lol Service was great too the server was nice and helped out when needed! I will go back here if I ever get back to Dublin
google avatar

Yelp
Great place with terrific specialty menus for vegetarian's and gluten intolerant people. Attentive service, always busy, serving authentic Irish cuisine daily.

Sean H.

Yelp
Hanging out with the family on temple bar district. Food, service and ambience was everything we were hoping for. Well worth the wait!

Kaori H.

Yelp
My daughter and I came here for our first meal in Dublin. The staff were so sweet and very accommodating and we were seated at our table quickly. We were tired from our long trip to Dublin and wanted to have a light meal so their seafood chowder and vegetable soup sounded amazing and were perfect. I was sad because I really wanted to try their Irish stew. The chowder and soup were delicious and perfect amount. The restaurant is upstairs and rather small but has great atmosphere and felt comforting.

Yelp
Unfortunately, I have to say that The Old Mill is highly overrated and arguably not worth the wait time. After hearing/seeing many great things about this place, I felt obligated to try it out (plus, as a first time visitor to Dublin, I naturally found myself in Temple Bar already). They don't take reservations, so everyone has to wait in line by the entrance to get a spot. Granted we were there at prime dinner time on a weekend, but we ended up standing there waiting for over half an hour to get in. After getting in, we realized this is because the restaurant is actually really small, plus the fact that it's just a popular spot. The interior does have a cozy vibe though with lots of old Irish and Dublin-related memorabilia and decor, which are pretty cool. I felt like I had to go with a classic to really test out this place so ordered the Traditional Fish and Chips (19.95 EUR). I have to say, I was kind of disappointed. It was honestly kind of like fast food quality, as the fish did not have much flavor - the only real flavor just came from the fried coating. The fries were very average. I also tried the Braised Beef and Guinness Stew (19.95 EUR). I think this was better than the fish and chips but still did not stand out to me that much. The staff are pretty friendly and helpful. The service speed was pretty quick (once we got a table). Overall, if you can manage to get in here without much of a wait and are already exploring Temple Bar, then I could see this being a reasonable choice. Otherwise, if there is a long line, I think you might be better off saving your time and looking elsewhere.

Yelp
Great value and location. Yes it is in the busy and tourist oriented Temple Bar area but it was fine for us. Food was good and pricing was fair.

Gareth P.

Yelp
Recommend. Despite being busy, we were seating almost immediately. Good food choice; tasty food and fairly quick to bring to table. Friendly and attentive staff. Nice Irish pub feel.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
Kid of course got the Dubliner beef burger. Real good and I had to get the Irish cottage pie. Amazing and a must stop in Dublin!
google avatar

Debasmita R.

Yelp
Came here on vacay to get trad Irish food and this spot was PACKED. We waited around 30 min during dinner hour to get a spot, and the restaurant is small and cramped but well worth it. I went with the cottage pie which was delicious. We got the assorted bread basket for apps and it came with a delicious garlic mayo dip, so good. Overall super good spot, huge portions, decent prices.

Yelp
This is a traditional Irish pub in a touristy area. The pub is upstairs from a small entry way with a narrow staircase, and has a good number of small tables. The waitress told me that the most popular dishes here are the Traditional Irish Lamb Stew or Braised Beef & Guinness Stew. I got the Braised Beef & Guinness Stew; it was so-so, nothing special (1 star off). I felt like it was something that I could have easily made myself at home. The bread that came with the stew was also hard and bland (1 star off), but I am not a fan of Irish soda bread in general. The Irish cheesecake was pretty good. It had a light whipped cheesecake texture. Service was very attentive and quick. I think I was in and out of there in 30 minutes. I guess you have to be quick at a high turnover touristy spot!

Steve S.

Yelp
I expected to wait as this place is quite busy. As others have noted, a guy will come down the stairs and ask if they want a drink while they wait. Nice touch! I had the mussels and chowder combo. The food came out fast and everything tasted good and the portion size is substantial. You won't be disappointed but you won't rave about it. Recommended.
google avatar

Jess L.

Yelp
I definitely recommend this place if you're coming to Dublin any time soon. It's fairly small so I'd suggest making reservations if you're determined to eat here, but the food was good and service was great. It was clear they're used to turning over tables somewhat quickly, so if that's not your vibe you might feel rushed, but for a quick bite to eat after a long day of touring the city, it gets the job done. I didn't love the food personally, but there was nothing wrong with it other than just not quite hitting the spot, and if I'd had the time to stop here more than once I definitely would have.
google avatar

Kristin L.

Yelp
We loved our experience at Old Mill Restaurant. The food was super delicious - we got the Cottage Pie and gluten free Traditional Irish Stew (including gluten free bread). I finished my Irish Stew (yes, scraped the bowl clean) and didn't feel overly stuffed after. We had wonderful service and the vibe of the restaurant gave us a really cozy, homey feel. So happy we close to start our vacation here!
google avatar

Jeni P.

Yelp
Great environment and food. The taste of Ireland feast for 2 was more than enough for 2 people. It was a great experience to sample all the food of Ireland without ordering each plate separately.
google avatar

D J.

Yelp
Popped in here after our first choice was booked up. Even without a reservation, they were quick to see our party of two. Food and service were all exceptional, and staff was incredibly friendly. Although crowded, it was worth the weight and quite enjoyable.
google avatar

Meagan S.

Yelp
Escape the Temple Street into this cozy hole in the wall: great food and drink choices, nice staff, reasonable prices. Had Hamburger and a salad along with some beers and everything tasted fantastic: will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Ambience: 1/1 Service: 1/1 Food: 2.5/3 This was our first stop when we visited Dublin and wow what a great way to start our trip! Old Mill really is an experience, with traditional Irish fare, music, and vibes in general. My friend and I ordered the Slow Cooked Beef & Guinness Stew and not only was the serving size huge, the stew was *super* filling - I had to take some to go! The bread it came with wasn't amazing, but overall it was still a good meal and I'd recommend trying it. The best part of Old Mill is really the decor and vibe, and I'd definitely recommend checking it out at least once for the experience!

RunGoodGreg

Yelp
VERY Reasonable and very good food. Staff are friendly, good atmosphere. You can dine at the bar. Bartender was sassy to my friend who she has known for decades. Good laughs. I recommend. As I have been more then a handful of times. Prime Rib on Sunday.
google avatar

Julie Y.

Yelp
Diverse ethnic staff serving Irish classics. Be warned, you'll need to take a flight of stairs toward the heavens to get to the restaurant proper. Pretty warm inside for the October day we visited. Ordered quite a few items to share amongst the four of us. Food was decent, but nothing we raved about (Brazen Head still ranks our favorite for the majority of the items we picked at the Old Mill too). We ordered: Large Bowl of Hot & Spicy Crisp Chicken Wings (devoured) Guinness Stew (hearty and managed to finish across four people) Seafood Chowder (Yes) Mussels (Alway yes in Europe) Cottage Pie (ended up taking most of it as takeaway) Salmon and Linguini seafood pasta (oddly fishy, but our forks kept finding their way back to it) Still, glad we tried a historical spot, but will be open to other restaurants next time.

Albert F.

Yelp
This is our 2nd time dining at the Old Mill. They serve authentic Irish food. The restaurant was full of people both times we visited here, as the food was great. I recommend this place to try local Irish food like Irish Stew, Lamb Shank etc.
google avatar

Nora M.

Yelp
My favorite Irish restaurant in Dublin. Although it's in temple bar area, which is a touristy spot. But that does not diminish the traditional flavors. Their wrack of lamb is one of the best in town, super tender and tasty. Their Irish stews are also great. And of course the famous Shepard's pie, is also served here and super tasty. They also offer some other dishes like pasta and burgers and stuff; but I recommend that you focus on the Irish cuisine here because that's what they do best here. I definitely recommend this place!! Yumm!

Yelp
Called to make a reservation for a party of 6. Got in right away. We were seated quickly. Greeted right away. The staff were all friendly, attentive, and quick! Amazing customer service. The ambiance is great, with some Irish memorabilia's. We tried the seafood chowder. It was very tasty. The garlic bread was served very hot and crispy. They have kids menu (kid friendly) we ordered chicken wings for one of the kids and the pasta for the other kid, and both of them were tasty and looked like not from the kids menu. The kids love them!!! It also includes dessert. We ordered the braised beef, and the beef pie. Omg!!! Highly recommended! Sooooooo good! Perfect for the chilly weather. Great portion! We came out full! Will definitely come back when we come back to visit Ireland again. Thank you!

Yelp
For our last night in Ireland, our party of 15 were able to get same-day reservations at The Old Mill Restaurant, located in the Temple Bar area. We walked in a few minutes before our reservation and saw no available table - this place is tiny and the line is out the door. We weren't seated until 20 minutes after our reservation time - but the food was definitely worth the wait! Event with 15 people, it came out quickly and with no issues! Personally, I shared the mussels (delicious and the broth was so creamy and delicious), and the lamb shank (giant, yummy portion with a generous serving of mashed potatoes). Other people in our party really enjoyed the Irish stew and the cottage pie. One person didn't love their salmon pasta - but ate all of it anyway! Overall, this place has delicious food, with generous portions, but it is a cozy, little place, so I highly recommend reservations!
google avatar

Kirsty E.

Yelp
We were lucky enough to snag a table here on a Saturday around 5.30pm without a reservation and beat the rush. The servers were wonderful, food was delicious as were the drinks. Seeing the line down the stairs and down the street upon departure was another indicator of how good this place is. I would definitely return and would recommend making a reservation to avoid disappointment. Some other reviews mention they don't take reservations but they do according to their website and I did see tables with reservations signs on so do try especially if you are planning ahead. This is in the popular, high pedestrian traffic Temple Bar Area so allow time to get here with parking and what not. I also highly recommend the Lamb Shank (it was delicious) This is the perfect place to try all the Irish classic dishes they offer.

Yelp
First time visitors and we came here for dinner. For appetisers we had the warm goat cheese salad and the barbecue buffalo wings, & both appetisers were very good. For dinner I had the Irish stew and it was great. Wife had their salon & prawn pasta which was just OK. My son had the steam muscles and seafood chowder which was very good. The customer service was excellent and courteous. The only negative was the tables were very close to each other not much space . They had a limited beer selection, but lots of good cocktails. They have an early bird special as well .
google avatar

Megan L.

Yelp
Cozy, warm Irish dining on the second floor. It's not a huge restaurant, but we were seated within 15 minutes on a weekday evening. Staff was nice and bantered with us. I got the #22 Braised Beef & Guinness Stew (€15.95) and a Mills Side Salad (€3.50). The stew comes with 2 brown bread slices and butter. A good amount of beef and loads of carrots and celery. Perfect food for the cold weather. The side salad was a nice mix of spring mix, arugula, tomato, cucumber, and carrots topped with a vinaigrette. Overall, a welcoming stop to taste a range of Irish food.

Yelp
Great flavor, for a good price. nice and cozy inside definitely a quick in and out type of joint. Over all great quality food & service.

Yelp
Went here alone because my best friend and international travel companion met a woman who he loves more than he loves getting lunch for the thousandth time with his absolute boy. I actually get it. Honestly, none of our lunches together have ever been that great. Love over lunch any day. LFG This does not apply to brunch or dinner. My solo lunch at the Old Mill was great. I walked by it the day before, someone was handing out menus - I didn't take one because I, personally, am not going to carry a menu around all day when not hungry. Anyway, the day of my visit, I looked on Yelp for a place to eat (alone). Old Mill pops up. Good reviews, central location, traditional Irish food - sold. I took a bus from Crumlin and completed my journey on foot by following my google maps app and looking like a tourist - as one does. I get to the entrance and I'm like damn - this is the place that hands out menus. They got me!! I sat next to a woman who was also alone but she was on FaceTime the entire time. Ordered my food and a drink. The staff was super attentive and the food was really good. Steak was cooked perfectly with onions that had great flavor, and the chips were great too. The decor was great and the good meal and alone time gave me time to reflect on how stoked I was to be in Ireland. Also, my friend met me at the bar next door for drinks right after I left and we had a sick day so all was well OLD MILL RULES - GO THERE

Yelp
Walking around Dublin was great. Thanks to yelp and google maps, we found the Temple Bar area and this gem. (Best meal I had during my time in Ireland.) Almost missed this quaint bar since it is upstairs. Decor was lovely, staff were quick and efficient. I measured almost every meal with this one and was disappointed. SO started with fish and chips and I got the mussel / chowder entree. Both were very very good. If it were a neighborhood spot, I'd eat there every day. Mussels were in a milky broth both tender and juicy. Perfect. Delicious. Chowder was mostly salmon bits which I guess I was expecting something different. It was, however, a lovely creamy soup with lots of salmon. Next trip to Ireland, I will revisit this establishment.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic find on Yelp. Loved the service, the menu, and atmosphere. The small and quaint restaurant upstairs in the alley was exciting to find in the streets of Dublin. The seafood chowder was the best I had in 5 days!
google avatar

Anthony J.

Yelp
Didn't have a wait at 5:00 PM. I had the Irish stew with lamb. It was pretty good and a side of french fries because I had a craving for those were great. When I left, the line was out the door and down the stairs.
google avatar

Joe D.

Yelp
Outstanding traditional experience. Perfect ambiance and excellent food. Right in the heart of Temple Bar area
google avatar

Rebecca G.

Yelp
amazing food, the flavor was so amazing and just the perfect picture of comfort and history.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
The lamb shank was cooked very nicely. The reduction it was in was excellent. One cannot go wrong with the cottage pie. Inside this place was hotter than the devils gooch. 19C/67F outside and no less than 27C/80F inside. Probably, because they pack everyone in there like fish in a can. Service was fairly quick.
google avatar

Farhan S.

Yelp
One of the best dining experiences in Dublin. Great food. Great service and ambiance.
google avatar

Yelp
The Old Mill is located right on Temple Bar Square and serves plates of traditional Irish food in an upstairs dining room. The Traditional Irish Stew was a thick, savory, herbaceous stew of chunks of Irish lamb, potatoes, carrots, celery, and onion, finished with parsley and thyme. The dish was served with slices of brown bread on the side, which went nicely with the hearty stew. I also tried the Cold Platter of Smoked Salmon, Prawns, and Caper Mayonnaise. This came with four juicy prawns topped with a creamy sauce; a mound of cabbage slaw topped with slices of smoked salmon, carrots, and arugula; caper mayo; potato salad; and two slices of brown bread with butter. Everything on this seafood platter was tasty, but I especially liked the smoked salmon with the mayo and the bread. Overall, the food here was simple yet tasty, though a tad overpriced for the portion sizes. But the real standouts of this restaurant were the friendly service and lively atmosphere!
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
Food, service, ambiance is exceptional. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. But, I highly recommend that you make reservations. If not you will be waiting on the stairway to the restaurant.
