The 17 Best Restaurants in Wichita, Kansas

"One of Wichita’s oldest downtown restaurants is still one of its favorites. Old Mill Tasty Shop, which first opened in 1932, is an old soda-fountain style lunch spot that has hexagon-tile floors, old-school wooden booths, and blue-plate specials. The menu still lists two of the restaurant’s original items — a liverwurst sandwich on white bread and a banana and peanut butter sandwich with honey — but its owner also is known for her crunchy, oniony New York chicken salad and her Southwestern specialties like green chili, chicken enchiladas, and Monterey tostadas. Don’t skip dessert: The folks behind the marble soda fountain make legendary milkshakes and turtle sundaes." - Denise Neil

Delightful downtown Wichita gem. Great food, cool building, and literally the friendliest waitress ever. A treat for your eyes and taste buds, the cherry vanilla coke starts you off right, and the menu is so tempting it's hard to choose. I had a cheese crisp, very nice, my sister has a tuna melt, she loved it, and neice had a pita stuffed with hummus, it looked wonderful and she liked it very much. I highly recommend!

Definitely a staple of Wichita! Been coming here since a kid and it has been one of the best in Wichita. The homemade Coca Cola is the best drink on the menu in my opinion! I got the beef brisket sandwich for the first time, and wow it was awesome. The chili was amazing as well and the vibe in here is immaculate! Definitely recommend checking this place out when you’re in town here! You won’t be disappointed!

Google
Absolutely the best service we have ever had! If I could give it 10 stars I would. The best gluten free bread I have ever tasted! The food was so delicious! Can’t wait to go back!

Google
The delicious smell drew me in, and I'm glad I did! I had the pastrami on rye and the beef stew, both were out of this world good. The sandwich was toasted to perfection, with a side of run of the mill potato salad. The side of beef stew was outstanding, savory but not too salty, with perfectly tender veggies and large pieces of beef. My husband got the Reuben and said it was quite good. We didn't have room for dessert, but their root beer floats looked really good. We will definitely be back next time we stop in Wichita!

Google
The restaurant was clean and has a nice atmosphere. Service was friendly and quick. I was a little irritated that the sever immediately started pushing milk shakes. I understand that I had kids with me but I wanted them thinking about lunch before desserts. The Reuben was okay, the side of potato salad was pretty bland. My daughter had the chicken salad sandwich which was very good and the winning choice out of the group. The club sandwich and ham sandwiches were also described as okay. The price for four meals was acceptable. The 4 stars is for the chicken salad, it is worth a return visit. I wouldn’t discourage anyone from trying the Old Mill Tasty Shop but I wouldn’t say it is a must try either.

Google
Amazing lunch stop with low prices, great portion sizes and fresh, delicious food. They treat their employees like actual family, not that toxic nonsense that chain restaurants try to pass off. The building is historic and truly beautiful, clean, comfortable, and inviting. Eat the carrot cake: you WONT regret it.

Google
This is a really fun old fashioned soda shop. The food is excellent and the place was packed. So of course we chose the barstools. We had the crab salad sandwich, open faced. Which was so filling we couldn't eat dessert. So next time.....dessert first!

Google
Went in to try the lasagna special, got there at around 11:15 and as soon as we sat down the cook called out that there was only 1 special but that more would be up in 15 minutes. We wanted to wait for the next batch so we could both order it and were told we couldn't because it would be "too busy and it was just an approximate time, it could be 20 minutes". We were perfectly fine with waiting but they apparently wanted to rush us out (there was no line the entire time we were there) so we ended up sharing the one special and ordering a sandwich to also share. I did notice other customers who came in just a few minutes after us were allowed to order the special. 🤔 Both meals ended up being pretty mid. Not terrible and not great. Had heard really good things about this place but after this experience, I don't think we will be back.

Yelp
I have been coming here my entire life. I love the food, I love the service, I love the ambiance, I love the tradition and history. It's an amazing place! The soda tastes extremely good here especially if you ask for an extra shot of soda syrup They used to let you add soda flavors to the already good ice cream but last couple times I asked about it they didn't let me but hopefully that changes someday.

Yelp
In my opinion, the food here used to be better. The sandwich I had essentially had two slices of not so desirable pre-packaged Turkey pastrami and a little bit of mustard. For the price it was a joke as places like Jersey Mike's have similar prices but much more abundant filling. The highlight was the tomato soup which is always good although it could have been warmer.

Yelp
Cozy little diner style restaurant with comfort foods and a soda fountain style interior. The location has lots of character from old refrigerators in the front of the restaurant to wooden booths and a counter that you can sit at too. It reminded of an old soda shop. The prices were reasonable. The portions were generous. We had the lasagna, open faced quesadilla, a side salad which even included alfalfa sprouts and cheese :), ice cream sundae and cheesecake. The food was served hot and there was a little bit of a wait since it was made to order. The server was friendly and attentive. Kind of the place you can count on always getting something simple and freshly prepared. This place isn't fancy. It's clean and has character. I'd go back again the next time I'm in The neighborhood.

Yelp
Delightful, old school, no fuss just the basics. Burgers are good, malts are excellent as is the service. Generally, my first stop when I get to Wichita. . .

Yelp
So the last time I've been this place was probably about 20 yess ago. The place hasn't changed! The cute bar counter on the right side of the shop and seating on the left side. I don't think the menu has changed either! It wasn't until I got my order was when I realized the chicken salad sandwich was also the last thing I had here too! I wish I ordered something different, but it was still good! We also got the beef brisket sandwich with a side of potato salad. I wish the sides were larger! I also got the special shake of the week, strawberry banana. A must try and was very good! Staff were friendly, but the young waiter looked a bit too young to be waiting tables. There's also a parklet out front so you can order your food to go and sit in the sun!

Yelp
Five stars for the atmosphere. Unfortunately the food, while good, is rather average. This place is worth the visit for the atmosphere alone. It's like stepping back into the first half of the last century right down to the soda jerks. You feel as if I've stepped into a restaurant during the 1930's or '40's. The offer a daily blue plate special. When we stopped in it was chicken enchiladas. They were good, bit not Mexican restaurant good. My wife had the club sandwich. Again it was good, but it's just a club sandwich. Overall a unique experience but not a five star dining experience. Then again, it's not meant to be. It appears to be intended to keep the experience as that of the first half of the last century, and that they do very well

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were visiting from NYC, and because this was his first time to Kansas (and actually the Midwest), he was very excited to visit an old school soda shop. Waitstaff is friendly and prompt, our food was delivered very quick, and this has been my boyfriend's favorite restaurant in Wichita. I am vegetarian and was happy to see more vegetarian options on the menu. I ordered the tomato bisque, 1/2 a grilled cheese and a side salad. I found out that all of their dressings are made in house. The soup was hot and fresh and tasted great with the sandwich. My boyfriend ordered the club sandwich and baked beans. We also opted for a chocolate banana malt. The prices were a little high, but the ambiance and experience made up for it. Everything we ordered tasted great and I would come back and visit again before the end of my trip.

Jane M.

Yelp
Everything went well!! Food quality and taste were outstanding and service excellent. Ambiance-- just as wonderfully comfortable as I remembered!!

Yelp
Yummy! Great service and love the chicken salad sandwich with the homemade blue cheese dressing.

Yelp
Lots of local flare and character. Simple dishes made well. You have to try some house soda/pop and or ice cream. It's impressive what they can do in such a small cooking space

Tressa M.

Yelp
Always a great spot for lunch. Friendly and helpful staff, Gail is a gem! The food is always fresh and delicious. We love their shakes and their old fashioned sodas. The atmosphere is always positive and a fun place to encounter.

Yelp
Old Tasty Mill Shop --4/5/21 Case summary: A local favorite for just about any appetite! With a rotating "blue plate special" give the Old Tasty Mill Shop a try. Ambience 5/5 Food 4.5/5 Service 5/5 Overall 5/5 Ambience 5/5 I was short on time for lunch and stopped by the Old Tasty Mill Shop for a quick bite. Seating included four tops surrounded by booths and finally there is soda counter bar stools. Framed photographs of the city throughout the years adorn the walls makes for a pleasing environment. Clear barriers were in place between the booths as it is the time of COVID-19. Staff frequently cleaned the booths and all wore masks during my visit. Finally the old soda fountain counter perfectly pays tribute to the original roots. Food 4.5/5 On this particular visit, I ordered a cup of tomato bisque and the muffaleta sandwich with a side of chips. The bisque was pleasant, served hot and included a wheat roll which was perfect for dipping. Moving on to the muffaleta my only complaint was instead of the traditional muffaleta bread, they instead used a Kaiser roll. I completely understand when you are serving something like 15 different sandwiches you have to make sacrifices to keep the orders manageable, but having just been to Central Grocery and Deli in New Orleans (THE quintessential muffaletta) it did leave a little wanting. The cheese, meats and olive spread were consistent throughout and made for a good sandwich overall. Service and Overall thoughts 5/5 Service was prompt and my water was regularly filled through my quick lunch. She was pleasant and gave me a quick run-down of the menu in addition to the rotating specials once I was seated. Overall this was a great choice when in downtown Wichita for a quick bite to eat. On this particular day, the "blue plate special" was the enchilada plate which I saw was very popular. Perhaps I would give this another try on my next visit. Pro tip: Order a malt or milkshake during your visit.

Yelp
Absolutely adored coming here for early lunch @ 11:00AM and could fully understand why it's SRO most of the time .. .. Amazing, old time interior makes you feel like you've stepped back in time! Just check out the wood refrigerator just inside the entrance .. .. Ordered their RUEBEN sandwich and it was IDEAL! Delicious on the marble rye that was not over-toasted, delicious, and just enough .. .. And, there's lots of parking available near the shop .. .. THANKS OLD MILL!!

Yelp
Yelp said their employees wear masks. They do not. That drastically changed our experience here since we had to take everything to go. Shakes and malts are great. Snowball is tiny for $4.50.

Andrew R.

Yelp
Staff were kind and I can say my drink never got to the bottom of the cup without being asked if I wanted a refill which is how I mainly judge many places. The food was delicious and fresh and the ambience was cozy and felt like you were at grandmas house. Also the bread pudding was so very dangerous if left alone could have probably eaten the whole pan if no one was watching.

Yelp
It was pretty busy when we came in but the wait was only about 10 minutes. The severs are super sweet and answered all our questions! I had the vegetarian reuben with potato salad and it was amazing. Nice and warm and the bread was delicious. They have tons of flavors of malts and I had the coconut one, 10/10.

Yelp
Love this Wichita Iconic Restaurant Best little diner in Wichita. Chicken salad, soups, and malts taste just like you think it will and fits the atmosphere. When my relatives come to town, we have to go to Old Mill!

Yelp
Old Mill Tasty Shop is a must for anyone visiting Wichita for the first time. It's a downtown classic and you can't find the same atmosphere anywhere else. They do have a pretty small menu but it's one where most people could find something they would like. I have always ordered and loved their chicken salad club and highly recommend their daily specials. You also can't go wrong with a good old-fashioned soda float or a malt. It is a very small space and can get extremely loud when they are busy. This is something to keep in mind if you're dining with a bigger group or have kids who are sensitive to noises. They do offer carryout which is helpful when you don't want to be surrounded by other people.

Yelp
I'm new to Wichita and heard this place was good so added it to the list of places to try when a friend came to visit from out of state. It looks like a quaint, old soda fountain shop (which I LOVE) and we went in between lunch and dinner so were able to nab a booth. They ran out of the meatloaf special so I ordered the replacement - salmon with potatoes, green beans and a biscuit. We ordered milkshakes so had to leave some room for those. Every single item we ordered was INCREDIBLE. Even the biscuit was delicious. We took some food home and I was thinking about my leftovers the rest of the day. We finished them off that evening. I may very well cancel every other place I scheduled us to eat at. We were both so impressed with this place. I will likely make it a regular stop so I can try more of their options. Highly recommend. The atmosphere, the staff, and the incredible food are well worth the stop.

Yelp
Always, always, always love coming here! Great food, great atmosphere, and great location, the Old Mill Tasty Shop never disappoints! I believe this place used to be an old 1950s-era soda shop and...it still looks the part! Super friendly service and even better food options, the Old Mill is the perfect place to grab lunch. I do believe they have unique (read: not always open) hours, so check before you come down. Try it out!

Yelp
So in my back and forth between San Francisco and Wichita, Wichita gets the first review of 2018. Yay! I love this place. Solid brunch food on Saturdays (closed on Sundays), great sandwiches and Mex food for the lunch crowd during the week. Love the old style atmosphere in Old Town with the exposed brick facade, you walk in and you feel like you are in the early 20th century. Really good food. Service is midwestern friendly, and you get the tab and pay at the counter.
google avatar

Yelp
I was worried about finding food options during my stay in Wichita, but the Old Mill Tasty Shop did not disappoint! First off, the restaurant is like a time capsule, which makes it so much fun. There are a great variety of items on the menu, and I enjoyed both the Brisket Sandwich and the Green Chile, which is fantastic. The staff was kind enough to share a few samples of different items with me, and they were all great. The highlight would have to be the milkshake...great ice cream and very thick. Definitely stop by this restaurant if you find yourself in Wichita!
google avatar

Tammy D.

Yelp
Sometimes this place is pretty busy and it's hard to get a seat. The night we went it was busy. We got the last booth available. I ordered the turtle sundae. It was delicious. I love the nostalgic charm of this place. Our family comes here often to enjoy the sundaes and milkshakes.
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
This is a cute local place I'm glad I stumbled across. If you like old-school diner fare and soda fountain drinks, this is your kind of place. The atmosphere is decidedly old-school with high ceilings, booths that feel like they've been around for decades and a long counter. They prep soft drinks, sodas and floats the old-fashioned way by pulling syrups at the bar. The food is familiar fare, nothing fancy -- sandwiches, soups, etc., but my hot turkey pastrami sandwich with chips certainly hit the spot for lunch. Family-friendly for sure, and the servers were warm and made me feel right at home.

Yelp
I wasn't happy to be in downtown Wichita at lunchtime today--until I remembered The Old Mill Tasty Shop. Chicken enchiladas were the best I've ever eaten. And, a dessert of bread pudding . . . oh my!!! Excellent service. Excellent food. I may go back tomorrow!

Cindy A.

Yelp
This was a time I have been so disappointed in a restaurant and their staff. Went after my husband's oncology appointment since he loves their shakes and it is close. When we got there the lunch crowd was gone and not busy. We were sat, order taken. Food arrived before our drinks and when the waitress brought our drinks she gave us our check, guess we were not allowed to order dessert. She left and we literally did not see her again at our table, she waited on her other tables but never asked if we needed anything. Yes, we needed a to go box and drink container. Had to go to the counter, where there were two people behind the counter, must have been wearing the invisible cloak because no acknowledged me. Finally had to ask another waitress if I could some help. Her reply, I am delivering food to my table. Who have you hired? Is your staff only capable of doing one thing at at time or being the only person of color was that my downfall!

Miguel G.

Yelp
Brecken was great when some male Karen at the bar started manstrating about a vape. He handled it very professionally and cooly. The Male Karen took a hike after his T levels were questioned by the public around him and I stayed for a great meal and even greater service! Highly recommend this place to all of Wichita
google avatar

Yelp
I come here once a week and leave with a full stomach and a happy face. The food here is great especially their lasagna special on wednesdays! every time we come, we are greeted by happy faces and the staff is amazing! I live coming to eat here so much. If you're in the area around noon try to stop by and order their chicken salad sandwich!
google avatar

Sharon E.

Yelp
Wichita tradition. Restaurant gets SUPER crowded and SUPER noisy. Its best to go during off hours. The menu is mostly sandwiches and ice cream drinks and desserts. Milkshakes, banana splits, etc. are what makes this special. Also special is the ambience. The restaurant is basically the same 40 years ago, according to my husband. Traditional counter and old commercial icebox are unique in Wichita.
google avatar

Gary M.

Yelp
The food here is AMAZING! The chicken salad is to die for! The staff is friendly, and the setting is great! I cannot recommend this place any more! So good!
google avatar

My-Trinh N.

Yelp
It was extremely crowded when we arrived, as expected of a popular restaurant at noon. Luckily, my friend and I were seated promptly. Our waitress was super nice and was always smiling. She gave us our menus and then got us water. My friend went with the seafood sandwich with kettle cooked chips and I went with the bbq brisket sandwich and a side of baked beans. My baked beans were heavenly. I loved the little chunks of bacon bathed in savory yet sweet beans. My sandwich was not very memorable. It was dry and the flavors were inconsistent throughout. I enjoyed my friend's sandwich better (I never knew mayo, imitation crab and celery could taste so amazing when mixed together!). Although my sandwich wasn't the greatest, it was still a good meal for me. I was full by the time I got up to pay. I would love to come back and try other options, including their root beer float.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a place I've been coming to for at least 18yrs... if not longer. I do not live in Wichita anymore and I haven't for 13yrs. However, I definitely make it a point that ever time I schedule a trip to come visit Wichita, I must stay till a Monday late afternoon. The main reason for this is "The Blue Plate Special" on Monday... is the Enchilada platter!!! I moved to Philadelphia 13 yrs ago an I still crave this special from The Old Mill Tasty Shop! My daughter looks forward to our visit as well, she gets either the NY chicken salad sandwich or the smothered burrito oh and don't forget the root beer float. This place is Legendary!!!!!!

Pamela O.

Yelp
Excellent! Love the atmosphere m... ice cream delights unbeatable!!! Very quaint, original soda fountain

Alicia K.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere, the food was great! We had the kids grilled cheese, the peanut butter, banana, and honey sandwich, and the muffleatta. We also had a Cherry limeade and a root beer float. Would definitely recommend this place. Great for a lunch!
google avatar

Jared P.

Yelp
I usually stick with the Reuben or chicken salad sandwich. The sandwiches are a little pricey but they're tasty. They have daily blue plate specials but they seem to always sell out before I get in. I still really want to try the meatloaf. It's not a real trip to Old Mill if you don't get some dessert! I like to get a different shake every time. But they have a variety of other options as well. It's just so cool to be able to eat at a restaurant that has been open since 1932, it's like I'm time traveling.
google avatar

Dennis O.

Yelp
I had heard several people recommend this place with the whole "shop local" tag in mind. My wife and I decided to give it a shot one day for lunch. I spent most of that lunch apologizing to her for not going somewhere better. The busted booth seats we had to endure made eating the incredibly basic food even harder than it should've been. I'm still confused as to what people see in this place. Both sandwiches we ordered weren't as good as what we can make at home...and I'm no chef. Then we ordered desert which tasted like it was made at least a day or 2 before and microwaved. We will not be back.

Janelle G.

Yelp
My sister and I had lunch here! My smoked Turkey sandwich was great along with the potato salad! The milk shakes are fabulous! Service was top notch! Definitely planning a return trip!

William K.

Yelp
I am a vanilla malt aficionado. I have had them across the country but can only name about four or five shops that do them right, and the Old Mill Tasty Shop is now at the top of that list. Perfect malt flavor, not too much or too little, coupled with excellent ice cream giving the perfect flavor and texture with no ice crystals and not too milky. I also decided to give their food a shot and ordered a Hot Ham & Cheese, and it too was perfect. Flavorful, cheese melted just right, and served quickly and with a smile. Definitely recommended.

Kaitlynn R.

Yelp
The servers were really nice! That was probably the only good thing about it though. I thought they would have a larger menu but I should have checked before I went.

Ann J.

Yelp
I was here years ago before a Shockers' game. This restaurant is a Wichita Classic! I need to get back there. P.S. The malts are amazing!

Heather E.

Yelp
You can never go wrong with an oldie!! They have the best chicken club salad sandwich. The malts and shakes are to die for too!!
google avatar

Tara W.

Yelp
Absolutely loved the vegetarian Reuben (even after omitting the cheese)! Thank you for providing vegetarian and vegan options! Chocolate cokes are delicious too!
google avatar

Eric M.

Yelp
I can't believe no one has reviewed Old Mill yet? Wow. I will make this one short and sweet. your typical greasy spoon diner with a lot of character and history. Food is exactly what you would expect it to be. Nothing fancy, no need for it to be. A good grilled cheese and tomato soup is what i usually get here. It is what it is and should never change. Thanks Old Mill!

Jeanne E.

Yelp
What I love: The world's best chicken salad (and I've tried it everywhere)! I always order an extra quart to go because I can't get enough! Besides the excellent foot and range of options, they are fast and efficient and extremely friendly. I'll be back soon ;-)! Thank you!
google avatar

Rosemary Y.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite lunch spots in Wichita. They have amazing malts, chicken salad sandwiches, and blue plate specials. Their chicken fried chicken is one of our favorites. If you like salad try their tomato dressing. It's light and creamy, unlike anything other dressing I've ever had. I have no idea why anyone would give this restaurant a negative review. I've been eating there for years and it's consistently good.

Ashley G.

Yelp
This is a great little family restaurant! The service was amazing, food is delicious! Kid-friendly!
google avatar

Nita H.

Yelp
Constant reliable quality food-must try chicken salad bacon club! Don't forget the homemade creamy tomato dressing as it is one you won't forget. Get there by 11:35 or wait in line.
google avatar

Yelp
OMTS is just one of my long time favorites and I just don't get downtown as often as I used to (back in the day when I took the bus to WSU...). So Yelp claims I haven't been here that many times, but I have been here enough times that I have actually seen hometown Hollywood Celebrities (don't want to blow their clover...). Everything I have eaten here is wonderful, and on the days when Blue Plate Special is using ingredients I don't eat, then there is plenty of other yummy sandwiches and soups to eat. My favorites include the New York Chicken Salad, the Rueben, Turtle Sundae, wnd more. Will need to upload more info later...

Yelp
This is The Spot. Fresh Homemade meals. This place is NOT good, its GREAT. I have the Steak Soup. Ask for two pieces of the bread. I only ask for one. Don't be like me. LOL, very Delicious. The service was also awesome.
