Galveston’s Best Dive Bars | Eater Houston

"If you’re a music lover, chances are you’ve heard of this iconic venue, which promises beer, wine, and coffee only. A must-stop for up-and-coming singers from Texas and beyond, the Old Quarter features live blues, jazz, and acoustic performances every night of the week."

This place is simply amazing if you're a true music fan. Just the right size and the acoustics are way better than expected. Great mix the night Madam Radar ripped up that stage. Looking forward to our return.

Google
Awesome intimate venue, reserve your seats online, not a bad seat. Nice to be able to meet artists after shows and buy merchandise. Bar has a nice selection of beer, no food. Plenty of parking in the area.

Google
Our favorite place for live music on the island! Always great bands and friendly atmosphere. We always run into friends here.

Google
So much fun. People are so nice. The sound is awesome. Fun, fun, fun. We saw Amy LeVere & Will Sexton on 1/9/1025.

Google
Insanely cool venue for one-of-a-kind shows. The seating is very intimate and a bit packed together, so you’ll make close friends with your table mates, but it all just adds to the experience. Bar service was quick and friendly and the will call experience operates smooth. I look forward to coming back here.

One of the best listening rooms I’ve ever been too. Great shows. Loved Trout Fishing in America

Yelp
This place has been around for years supporting musicians and giving us an opportunity to support them as well. It's an old school venue no frills just a friendly fun vibe. We had a great time!!

Yelp
A really small music venue. Great sound. Intimate. Wife and I were looking for a little live music and the Old Quarter fit the bill

Yelp
Watching an acoustic set at this tiny bar / music venue offers you a unique and intimate experience. It's located right next to the 1894 Opera House in Galveston. As many times as I've seen at performance the Opera House, I never knew this little gem existed until the beau talked about his adoration for this music dive. Your ticket includes seating - tight seating - but it's part of the charm. It's like watching a set inside someone's home. The OQAC does accept credit cards. Beer and wine only. Oh, and coffee.

Yelp
Small venue but nice. It's a great place to go if you just want to sit and enjoy the show without all the normal crowds, standing and singing of a normal concert. I personally think this takes away from the concert experience but it was still great acoustics and truthfully not a bad seat in the place. They also have a pretty large drink selection.

Yelp
Galveston legend. If you're into live music that's not some lame cover band, this is your spot. Any night could be a banger with a wide variety of cool music and cheap beers.

Yelp
Recently under new management, this place is a fantastic place to catch some live local music and drinks. Laid back atmosphere, reasonable priced drinks, and great live music.

Yelp
5 stars for what it is: A small, dark, dingy dive bar with the best live music on the Island. New talent and the well known artists all play there because of the history that Wreck and Janet instilled over the course of time. I understand that we are under new management now, but I still see good shows are booking, so I assume the new guy has some continuity, although I have not had the pleasure of meeting him or her yet. The place is a throwback to the seventies where "The Guy" is the owner, barkeep, booking agent, ticket agent and sometimes band member. Come with a laid-back attitude, get your seats early, because this place is REALLY SMALL, and enjoy some good music. I have seen Grammy nominated and award-winning singer Ruthie Foster there twice as well as other and absolutely loved it!

Yelp
Very intimate setting for acoustic performances. Very reasonable prices on drinks and admission. You feel a connection with the performers and with others in the audience. Draw backs are uncomfortable seating and limited tables No food so eat before you go. We had a great time listening to the women's group before Trout Fishing. Limited restrooms. Friendly bartender!

Yelp
Hilarious open mike night. Gotta hand it to anyone who can get up there on stage and perform original songs, though! I was a little turned off by an experience, perhaps people who know this guy would appreciate it, but I found it rude, and I really wanted to like this place because it is so different, historic, and just a cool atmosphere. I called to ask about music for the night we would be there. I listened to a rambling, garbled, muffled confusing greeting, most of which I could not understand, so I waited for a beep to leave my message. I didn't hear back for a couple of days. But, we ended up going anyway, and while I was sitting at the bar, the owner returned my call and I said, Wow, I'm sitting at your bar right now! and instead of saying Hey, that's great! he launches into telling me how he had to listen to my phone message for ten minutes before he could understand my phone number. I've got a pretty clear voice....What a jerky way to treat customers. If he was trying to be funny or quirky, he missed his mark. I think he is a crochety old guy whose brain has been sizzled a bit too much. I cannot agree with reviews that say everyone feels like family, or being greeted with a smile and handshake. Maybe the musicians are that way with each other. But for tourists wandering in for a night of music, nothing was further from the truth the night we were there. The place was empty except for the dad of one performer. Later a group of tourists arrived but, along with us, they left dissatisfied.

Yelp
After several more trips to the OQAC, I feel better qualified to offer a little more information about the place. The owner is wrecks bell (his spelling), former bassist for Townes Van Zandt. If that name doesn't ring a bell, please stop reading this review; you have no reason to go to the Old Quarter. As mentioned in another review, beer and wine are available, but no hard liquor. BYOB seems to be frowned upon, but is not outlawed. Understand before you go that the venue is all about the music. It is not a place with 200 beers on tap and an extensive wine list. It does, however, attract all of the top Americana, Red-Dirt, Canadian-folk, bluesy, alt-country, country-rock artists drawing breath today. Newcomers and legends play the Old Quarter. You are hereby advised to see them there if you can. Seating is limited. Reserve early. Ticket price is set by the band, either directly or indirectly. Newer acts may play for $5. A show from a legend will be more. While you are there, make sure you try a StarBock. It's a magical mixture of Lone Star and Shiner Bock. It is also the impetus of a lawsuit against wrecks by a famous(ly overrated) Seattle coffee pimp. Seriously, are we gonna confuse good beer with mediocre latte? I think not.

Yelp
Best place on the island to hear good original music. They have music every night almost and most of the acts are pretty good. It's a small place that doesn't seem to ever be busy. This venue is all about the music. So if you're an artist I highly recommend playing here if you're in town. I played two nights in a row and was treated very well. The bartender Lee is a nice guy and very friendly. If you're in town please check this place and please support live/local music.

Yelp
Good times. Between the history and the great music, how can you go wrong by visiting the Old Quarter? My friend and I traveled down here from out of town to perform on a Wednesday night and Rex greeted us at the bar with a smile and a handshake. Everyone in the bar introduces themselves and everyone feels like family, even though they're from all over. The live music is what makes this place and none of the performers disappointed. Everyone is kind and supportive. Such a great atmosphere. Can't wait to visit again.

Yelp
A dim, dingy dive bar with a small selection of beer, no liquor, and the best music on the island. It's worth the drive to come down for nothing but a visit here.

Yelp
I want to come here more often and enjoy live music, however I can't afford $15-20 cover charge often. I've tried to encourage friends to go there, but they are discouraged by the price. Love the venue. Sad we cant go regularly.

Yelp
Fun open mike night. There were some amazing guitar players. Nothing fancy and fun.

Yelp
the best live music in the world! The owner played Carnegie Hall with Lightnin Hopkins;sang for Lucinda Williams;played with Townes Van Zandt ! A Truly "under appreciated gem"!
