Boston’s Best Dumplings | Eater Boston

"Tucked inside Quincy’s Kam Man Food grocery store, Shanghai Soup Dumplings is a relatively new storefront that is casually dishing up some of the best soup dumplings in the area. Order the signature soup dumplings — the chewy, soft, not-too-thick dough wrapper is excellent, and the juicy pork filling is flavor-packed." - Erika Adams

The food here is delicious. However, and this is just a personal preference, some of the pork they use in certain dishes had a very odd texture, such as in the rice cakes with pork dish. Otherwise the food here is absolutely delicious - highly recommend the cucumber salad, soup dumplings, chili shrimp, and their fried rice dishes. On busy days, the restaurant can feel very loud and overstimulating. The salad and soup dumplings came out super fast, but the other dishes took a while.

The namesake soup dumplings are absolutely worth it here. In fact, the workers here are so confident you'll order them that they'll set down the small dipping plates with your menu and glass of water. I'm nowhere near an expert when it comes to soup dumplings, but I know what I love about these - thin but expertly wrapped dumpling skins that manage to contain lots of hot, sippable soup and a tasty meat filling. They come six to an order and come to your table in hot, steamy bamboo baskets. On each table, there are pour bottles of soy sauce, vinegar, and chili oil to make your version of a perfect dipping sauce. I'm also a major fan of the string beans here. They're flash fried in hot wok oil to a perfect tenderness with just a tad of fermented funk. These are far and away my favorite way to enjoy string beans, and Old Shanghai doesn't disappoint. There were a few but major pitfalls with our dinner. One was ordering the beef with peppers as one of our main entrees. We were enticed by the pictures (both on the menu and on the front window when we came in). But in a major catfishing swap out, we were given a platter that was mainly shredded peppers with a little beef. The peppers were also so spicy that we were shoveling mouthfuls of rice with every morsel. That led to the second snag with our meal. We were given a little bowl of rice with that entree, and after chowing quickly through it, we unthinkingly asked for another. At the end of our meal, we nearly choked to find that they'd charged a whopping $2.50 for the tiny serving. Ya'll, I know food costs are rising, but that hurt a little. Those quibbles aside, I'm still dreaming about those soup dumplings and when I can have them again. Service is somewhat cold but frighteningly fast and efficient.

This place has phenomenal xiaolongbao as always, but the sesame chicken was underwhelming. The sauce is excessively sweet, and the pieces were mostly batter with hardly any meat. Maybe it was just a bad batch, but I wish I had just ordered another platter of soup dumplings.

Google
Very good soup dumplings, scallion pancakes, rice cakes, and spicy noodles. It is authentic. The food and service is on point. This place is worth a try.

Google
I feel repulsed as I write this review, having already eaten from the lunch box before noticing a tiny baby roach swimming in the food. It was in the Chicken Eggplant dish I ordered as takeout from Old Shanghai Soup Dumplings. I didn’t notice it at first because I was hungry and didn’t think to inspect the dish closely. This was my first—and will definitely be my last—order from this restaurant.

Google
The Pork Soup Dumplings are some of the best in the area, full of flavor. The honey ribs were beyond what we expected. Can't wait to go back again

Google
There was a bit too much black bean paste in "Pork w/ scallions" in my personal taste, but other than that, all the dishes were delicious and flavourful. I also appreciated their kind and fast service.

Google
My bf and I ordered soup dumplings, Peking duck buns, pancake with sliced beef, pan fried pork buns, noodle w. Scallion sauce, stir fried string beans [not in picture order] The food wasn't bad, soup dumplings were good, noodle you have to mix it cause the sauce is all on the bottom, but tastes a tiny bit bland... Scallion pancake was good. The pork bun had less sauce compared to other places I've tried. String beans also tasted a bit bland as well. But overall, food was okay. Service on the other hand... we've said thank you every time our server came and gave us food... but the server would just place the food without even giving us a reply or a smile. In the end, we ended up not liking the service and kinda ruined the mood a bit. Could just be us though...

Yelp
Old Shanghai Soup Dumplings - Palisades Park, NJ Old Shanghai has been a longtime favorite for me and my family--we've been coming here for years and it never disappoints. The soup dumplings are hands-down the best in the area (I could honestly eat them every day!). Yelp
Tasty place, and particularly enjoyable on a weekday during lunch. Old Shanghai is situated on a main street in Palisades Park. Paid parking is available on side streets. There were plenty of spots when I arrived. The aroma outside is phenomenal, partly coming from this restaurant and likely the one next door. Plenty of tables were available during lunch on a weekday, service was attentive and food came out fast. It was overall a great experience. The tofu noodles were interesting to try, but not much flavor there. I poured my dipping sauce on top to liven it up. Sesame chicken was ok, but I really just got that for my daughter. The soup dumplings are excellent! The crab and pork combo one is particularly tasty. We also enjoyed the marinated jellyfish too. Salt and pepper squid was another solid choice. Crisp, flavorful and tender. I'd definitely return if in the area.

Yelp
The location of this place was very nice. The people were very welcoming. There is not a parking lot however I found plenty of parking around the area. I'm going to start off with the soup dumplings. They were my favorite and full of flavor. Every dish was so good the beef chow fun was light and full of flavor. The sesame chicken was crispy and so good. The house special fried rice was delicious. I have no complaints of every dish that we ordered here. Everything was light and full of flavor. I am definitely coming back here and have told a couple of people I know to come visit this place. They have so many options on the menu. Thank you for a great experience and I will be returning very soon.

Yelp
Always spot on. Great soup dumplings, scallion pancake and spicy won ton. Service is quick. May be a short wait on weekends.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Loved the special fried rice and beef chow fun. The string beans were also one of my favorites. Will definitely have to go back to try more dumpling menu items.

Yelp
Much better experience the second time around! Again ordered take out but placed order online. There is $1 surcharge for doing so. They automatically add tip but you can adjust. The only downside for ordering online is that the time the order takes is not accurate. The default seemed to be 30 minutes but took half that time. We ordered the pan fried dumplings, shrimp wonton soup, eggplant with garlic sauce, udon with beef, and triple delight. For the $65 or so that we spent we got a lot of food! The pan fried pork buns were so good! I definitely prefer these over their soup dumplings. The shrimp wonton soup was different. The shrimp "wontons" are similar to shumai. What the shrimp was wrapped in though didn't really hold up in the soup. The eggplant with garlic sauce wasn't that spicy. The beef in the udon and triple delight was nicely cooked, not chewy or fatty.

Yelp
TLDR: the best soup dumpling spot in the area. My go-to on a cold day. This place gets EXTREMELY busy on weekends and dinner time. It is very hectic and lively as most of the customers are families or large friend groups. Soup dumplings have the perfect skin, flavorful soup and very fresh meat. I prefer the one with crab meat. MUST GET. Pan fried pork dumplings: okay flavor- not the best I've had but still good. Pancake with sliced beef: extremely flakey with a generous portion of beef and great flavor. MUST GET Braised Fried Gluten: extremely flavorful broth that is soaked up by the fried gluten mixed with a bunch of other ingredients. A great appetizer. MUST GET Spicy beef and tripe: spice levels vary depending on the day so be warned. Might not be worth the gamble for some people House fried rice: perfect amount of Smokey wok flavor with a generous portion of shrimp. MUST get

Yelp
Delicious soup dumplings! The best in the area, I'd say. I used to like another soup dumpling place in Fort Lee but I think this is better. My go-to for soup dumplings. Their other food is delicious as well.

Yelp
It's always good to be back at OSSD to enjoy a belly full meal. We were in for a weekend lunch, it was packed as expected, but we got a table without waiting. Restaurant was clean and tidy. We ordered some of favorite dishes beef tripe, eggplant with garlic sauce, chicken broccoli, gluten tofu and of course the soup dumplings. The dishes were served very quickly. All the items had amazing taste and flavor.

Yelp
This was my first time having soup dumplings and I'm glad that I enjoyed them at Old Shanghai. The restaurant is located on the busy, and highly visible, Broad Avenue. You could tell that this restaurant has lots of customers, because they have a large waiting area bench, as soon as you enter. The staff was very professional in getting us seated quickly and I enjoyed the wall scenery on one of their large walls. I cannot give enough kudos to the owner, who remained at our table, answering all of our questions, and gave amazing recommendations. Another thing that I appreciated was... photos for every menu item. It helped us ask questions and try new selections. We started with complimentary Oolong Tea and a spicy Cucumber Salad. Both were very good starters. Every single entree was DELICIOUS and thoroughly enjoyed: Steamed Pork Soup Dumplings (I enjoyed every bite of these dumplings and the entire process of preparing them was entertaining), Vegetable Dumplings, and Eggplant with garlic sauce. Now, there was one other item, but I forgot to take its photo. It was the Beef with Chili Pepper. Unless you are a black belt spicy food consumer, think twice about ordering this bad boy. I tried one chopstick full sample and now is when the feeling is returning to my tongue. The service, alone, was five stars. Staff members kept our water glasses full, quickly brought out our food, and accommodated all of our needs. I highly recommend Old Shanghai and will definitely return for great food and exemplary service.

Yelp
been craving crab soup dumpling so i tried old shanghai's again and their soup buns are definitely soupy and flavorful! the skin is thin and overall it was great. the duck in the bun is a tiny piece of meat but its only $3.50 so i guess thats good? will have to come back to dine in to try other things.

Yelp
Came back to try some other dishes and soup dumplings were just as good as I last remembered Veggie and pork wontons 3.5/5: soup and wontons itself was quite bland but I liked that it was meaty Double cook pork 4/5: this was delicious but you def need to pair with rice

Yelp

Yelp
Generous and authentic lunch menu. The hot and sour soup contained a healthy mixture of water bamboo, black fungus, and tofu. The scallion beef could easily fill with three bowls of rice. The noodles for the soupy jalapeños with pork slices and the dry with scallion and oil all had good chewy texture. The soup dumplings had very thin skin, showing the mastery in making and requiring the mastery in eating them. Ambiance was nostalgic with splash pictures of Zhejiang province small towns on one side and black-and-white old photos of Shanghai buildings on the other.

Yelp
This spot is located on a busy/Main Street with a lot of food options. I'm glad I chose this spot as it really delivered with tasty dishes. My family and I love soup dumplings. We have our tried and true spot but on Feb. 19th (President's Day), we were all off from work and decided to try a new place. When you walk in, there is a waiting room which indicated to me that they usually have a wait time and loyal customers. 1st good sign. We were here for a long time and the staff did not rush us. One of the waiters actually dropped a glass and the rest of the staff went around making sure no nearby customers were injured/apologized for the scare. They also checked in on the waiter and helped him clean up. Very nice and attentive staff. We ordered the steamed crab meat and pork soup dumplings and wow the broth was soooo delicious. It was our favorite part of the meal. It confirmed for us that we will be visiting again. The fried udon was also delicious. The bok choy wasn't overcooked and whatever sauce was drenching the noodles was tasty. The roast pork fried rice was good. They nailed every dish we ordered. I didn't taste any of the house special fried rice because I ended up being too full but my mom and sister were fighting to take the leftovers home so it was also a hit. I think they forgot and then realized we ordered the Peking duck because it was brought last even though it was an appetizer. When I did eat it, it was cold so I can't really judge it accurately. I would order it again and just hope I get it before my entree arrives. My family and I will be visiting again though I wouldn't be surprised if it is more packed than our first visit. I think we got lucky with the holiday. I don't see a place with food as this good not having a lot of customers.

Yelp
I decided to come here to grab lunch with family before heading into the city and this was meal that could have been skipped. Everything we ordered was bland, except the xiao long bao soup dumplings. There are definitely better places to go for an overall food experience, however, like many soup dumpling places, only the soup dumplings are worth trying. I recommend only getting the soup dumplings, specifically the crab filling ones.

Yelp
I love this place - it has become my go-to place whenever I want a good, comforting slurp of soup dumplings. Owned by former manager from soup dumplings plus, their menus are nearly identical... but while the OG got a bit too pricey and slipped a bit in quality and taste, this relative newcomer is hitting all the marks! Parking is probably the worst thing about this place as you'll have to circle around a few times to find a spot, but your effort will totally be worth it. Crab and pork soup dumplings (5/5, APP) - Super tasty. Perfect with the sweet black vinegar and I'd add a dollop of their spicy chili crisp oil (on the table) Spicy Sichuan beef tripe w/ peanuts (5/5, APP) - my wife doesn't even eat spicy and she loves eating this! It's probably our second favorite app after the XLB. Great chewy texture that's not too tough, fragrant, savory, spicy, umami, and even slightly sweet, this is where it's at! Order it, Thank me later. Chicken with Mixed Vegetables (4/5, Main) - Nice counterpart to spicy dishes, it has great chew and generous amount of crunchy vegetables to offset the protein. I'm a fan of this place - probably my favorite Chinese spot in the area along with the incredible Xiao Chun Dian lamb skewer place few blocks down!

Yelp
delicious asian cuisine! this is my favorite place to get soup dumplings. the steamed pork soup dumplings always taste delicious and are well made. it's fresh with great flavor. the texture is right too. the pork isn't slimy or fatty when biting into the dumpling which is a common thing i've experienced with other soup dumplings. The food is good for both take out and dine in. The other dishes are tasty as well. The pork buns are delicious. It's hard not to order more! The service is good and the atmosphere is a nice. it is a nice place to have a tasty meal.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a while (a couple years) but it's still an all time favorite. Soup dumplings are always good. Jelly fish is good - large, long pieces, good amount of sesame oil and flavors/garlic. Beef scallion pancakes were good- wish there was a little more hoisin sauce. Service was quick, bathrooms were clean.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Soup dumplings were outstanding. Everything else was standard. Atmosphere was basic and clean. Staff was friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Great service and food. Had the soup dumplings, Peking duck and broccoli and chicken. They provided complimentary green tea. Everything was delicious but the soup dumplings weren't as soupy as I would have liked.
google avatar

Jackson W.

Yelp
Got takeout from here and I think the food is pretty good. I ordered a pork soup dumplings, shrimp fried rice, chicken w/ chili peppers, and shredded pork fried noodles. The soup dumplings, noodles, and fried rice were very good. The chicken I didn't like as much because there was too much batter and the chicken itself wasn't very tender. Price was reasonable and everything was packaged well.
google avatar

Shafina I.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in Fort Lee. Their food is flavorful, the meats are tender, and they have an extensive menu. Although on the more expensive side, sharing family style is a great option for this restaurant.
google avatar

Eddie D.

Yelp
Soup dumpling is the bomb, I would say comparable to NY Chinatown. Soupy, does not break, thin enough not to taste too doughy. It's now my go to place for soup dumpling,
google avatar

Yelp
Hands-down, the best Chinese food and soup dumplings in New Jersey. The soup dumplings are amazing. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
Mostly, the food was good. I didn't care for the stir-fried udon. Both the crab meat pork and regular pork dumplings were good, but I wish they had other options. Chili pepper dishes are super hit, so beware. Beef dishes were very tender. The only thing is that whenever I go to Chinese restaurants, they tend to seem angry the way they talk. Also, one of the waitresses was coughing all over the place without a mask. I had to drop a star for this. Otherwise, it would have been a solid 4 star.
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
Came here for dinner on the weekend. Waited around 10 minutes to be seated for a party of 2. We got the pan fried pork buns, sautéed chicken with chili pepper, and stir fried udon with vegetable. The pork buns came out hot and were so juicy. Would definitely recommend. The chicken came with a bowl of white rice. It was very spicy and delicious. The udon was good but nothing special. For dessert, we got the pumpkin cake with bean paste filling. It was warm and delicious. I left feeling very satisfied and would come again.
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
One of my favorite Shanghai place. There was a slight wait on a Saturday night. The soup dumplings are delicious here. I would skip the spicy beef tripes as the flavor was not that great. The rice cake with cabbage and pork was delicious. Pumpkin cake and fried buns are one of my favorites. Quick service and they refilled on tea a few times. However, one of the waitress has an attitude. Bathroom was clean, I always appreciate places that separates male and female restrooms.

Shirley E.

Yelp
Old Shanghai offers delicious soup dumplings, thin wrappers and soft and tender fillings. Decent services and good lunch selections. The lunch prices are reasonable too.
google avatar

Mel T.

Yelp
I needed some soup dumplings and a lot of the spots that serve it in the area are overrated. I saw I had Old Shanghai Soup Dumpling bookmarked so we stopped in on a Saturday at around 2:30. There were still a lot of tables dining at that time. We ordered the crab soup dumplings, pan fried pork buns, spicy house special fried rice, and the crispy chow mein with beef. The soup dumplings were pretty solid. Skin was good, as was the filling. They also leave a whole jar of chili crisp at each table, which I loved. Pork buns were pork buns. They were fine but it's probably because I'm just not a huge fan of these but hubby loved them. Fried rice had plenty of ingredients and again, chili crisp elevated the flavors. I also enjoyed the chow mein but you have to eat it quick or else it'll get soggy from all the gravy. The only thing I didn't like was that it came with a bunch of celery, which I didn't know. But I did appreciate that there was a ton of veggies overall (Napa cabbage and carrots) but they still didn't skimp on the beef. Looking forward to my next visit!
google avatar

Yelp
On a whim a friend and I chose this place. Efficient service although english's not the first language. The food superb.. Lo Mein was Delightfully delicious and not oily. Totally different than any other.

Neha M.

Yelp
I was craving some soup dumplings so my friends and i agreed on trying this place out on a gloomy Sunday. Seemed like a lot of others had the same idea. It was busy but not too packed where we had to wait, although, we may have some at the perfect time. shortly after we were seated a lot of people were asked to come back in 10-15minutes. I tried the pork soup dumplings - the dumpling itself were thin and once you poked the hole in them the broth was so flavorful, pork cooked perfect. This was the only dish i really loved. I did like the lo mein but the pork wasnt the best in this dish. I also tried the kung poo which i guess i thought it was kung pow which it was not - it was more like an orange chicken - definitely on the sweet side! I would come back here just for the dumplings alone

Yelp
My go to dumpling place!!! I'm so happy ai found this place. The servings are just the right amount for their prices. 5/5 for me!

Yelp
Food was amazing and quick service as usual. Been visiting Old Shanghai for years and they never disappoint. Food is 10 out of 10!
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant is alwayss packed but I'd still wait because the food is sooo good and it's not expensive! I love their soup dumplings - tried the regular pork ones and the crab and they're both delicious- thin skin on the outside and the filling is juicy with enough soup! I also love the crab and tofu dish - it's perfect with rice!! The rice cakes were chewy and had good flavor! Will be back for more soupy dumps!

Yelp
Busy, busy, busy. That's what our impression was after dining here. We came by on a Saturday evening at 6pm and the restaurant was bustling from the word "Go!". Waiters were flying around, literally, but, luckily, we didn't have to wait for a table and were able to get situated immediately, however a wait did begin to develop soon after. Also, this restaurant does not have a parking lot, so be prepared to search for a spot on the street. The restaurant's menu was very typical of most Shanghainese restaurants, highlighted by soup dumplings, cold dishes and noodles. However, if you were to look at another Shanghainese restaurant's menu in Fort Lee or NYC and compare it, chances are the menu items are nearly identical, so if you eat the cuisine frequently, you won't be surprised by anything here. We pretty much ordered what we normally order when we go to a Shanghainese restaurant, which, OF COURSE, includes an order of soup dumplings, specifically the Steamed Crab Meat & Pork Soup Dumplings. In addition, we also ordered the Braised Fried Gluten, Crispy Noodle w. Chicken, Pork Fried Dumplings and Pan Fried Pork Buns. Everything was solid and good --- to me, at least. The soup dumplings were right on with other restaurants we've been to and so was the rest of the items that we ordered. Maybe the soup dumplings' soup could have been hotter, but that's a small gripe. My wife on the other hand had a different opinion of it all, although her opinion might have been swayed by the lack of good, attentive service. Ultimately, everything felt a bit rushed as waiters were whizzing by, but she felt the flavors were off and not on par with other Shanghainese restaurants. Maybe it was the experience where things felt fast, but, the food IS decent here IMO. Honestly, I couldn't tell if the flavors were off. Everything we ordered tasted pretty typical like other spots. You're not going to go home and dream about the food here, but if you're craving Shanghainese food and soup dumplings, I think this restaurant can hit the spot. Just show up a bit earlier.

Yelp
Old Shanghai Soup Dumpling has become my go-to spot for soup dumplings. Parking can be tricky, but I've had decent luck parking on side streets and taking a walk. My last visit was with my sister for lunch. It was a Thursday and it was not too busy but that might've been because it was a rainy day. I've seen the place get pretty packed at times. The soup dumplings are great; the skin of the dumpling isn't too thick and the soup/filling is very flavorful. That's not surprising given the name of the establishment. However, the restaurant offers much more than just soup dumplings. I haven't tried _everything_ on the menu, but I have tried a decent amount. I've never been disappointed by any of the food. Aside from soup dumplings some of my favorite things to order are the scallion noodles and the beef scallion pancake. The noodles are simply garnished but the flavor works so well. The noodles have a good chew to them and ever since my friend introduced me to this dish I've ordered it every time I come. The beef scallion pancake is also very tasty. The scallion pancake has a nice crunch and the beef is seasoned and cooked well. Service can be a bit gruff but it's not too bad. I'm certain I'll be back here sooner rather than later.

Yelp
We've been here a couple times-last time we went we ordered soup dumplings, beef with noodles and twice cooked pork. We enjoyed the dumplings: flavorful and good textures. The twice cooked pork was very good with lots of delicious cabbage and pork. I wouldn't get the beef w noodles again bc it was almost all noodles with very little beef. Not well balanced. Overall like this place!

Yelp
great food & their hot & sour soup stood out for me standard dishes: - crab soup dumplings - hot & sour soup - scallion pancakes

Yelp
Fantastic spot to check out pre karaoke bars or pre-drink. Definitely very busy and you might have to give it a call before for a reservation if not you will have to put your name down and come back about half an hour later. For a group I recommend going through the appetizers or the dim sum.

Yelp
Very surprised the food is pretty good. Priced very reasonable and service is not bad.

Yelp
Nice little restaurant minutes from GWB. There's many Asian restaurants in the area so you'll find other options if this place doesn't hit the spot. That being said, highly recommend trying it out. Super quick service and almost all the dishes we ordered were flavorful and exactly what you'd expect. Pork soup dumplings and the steamed chicken dumplings were both very flavorful and seasoned well. The wrappers were the right thickness and texture (not too thin and dainty or too thick and chewy). The sautéed chicken with chili was a surprise. Was expecting shredded or chicken chunks but got breaded chicken in bite size pieces. This actually ended up as a plus as they breading absorbed the garlic and Sichuan flavors. Has a nice zing and spice. The only knock was the Peking duck bao bun. They're sold by the "slice" of duck. Overall flavor and texture just seemed off.

Yelp
A new loved spot by my family! This is the sister restaurant to the Soup Dumpling Plus in Fort Lee, so you know it's good! Other than the soup dumplings, my favorites are the Noodles with Scallion Sauce and Sautéed Chicken with Chili Pepper (be careful of the dried chilis!).

Yelp
Wow, I was pretty skeptic of this place since I've had a lot of soup dumplings in my life, but this ranks up there! We got this place recommended by friends and went a little off-hours and thankfully no wait! The soup dumplings are worth the hype! They are absolutely delicious, perfect amount of soup, good texture and so juicy! The food came out quickly and prices were reasonable. The fried rice and beef with peppers entree were also really good. This will be my new go-to spot for soup dumplings!

Yelp
Really good, honest food. The soup dumplings were as good as we've ever had. Bok choy was delicious as were the ribs. We'll be back.

Yelp
Favorite Chinese restaurant in fort Lee, pal park area. Nice vibes and best food in area. Sometimes there's a line and very busy, hard to get a table but explains why the food is so good

Yelp
Ok this is actually a rival to soup dumpling plus. Soup dumpling plus' crab pork soup dumplings got the soup but this place has got the meat. Soup dumpling plus' beef pancake has always been super dry but this place has the pancake flaky hot and fresh. I'm a little disappointed in the Chili sauce though - it could be spicier. Everything else on the menu is pretty similar. Crab pork soup dumplings 5/5 I might dream about these Beef with peppers 5/5 satisfying my pepper cravings Beef pancake 5/5 flaky hot and fresh We were seated right away. 5pm and all the seats were pretty full. Street parking is hard to find.
