Old Town Coffee - Review - Centro - San Sebastián - The Infatuation

"Old Town is one of the only specialty coffee shops in San Sebastián, but their flat whites are more than just gorgeous cups of caffeine. The young owners roast their own beans just outside city limits, and at least one of them is always on hand to explain the coffee’s notes and where it’s from. Post up at the bar or on the patio and pair your coffee with brunch staples like avocado toast with salmon, bread with Spanish ham and tomato, or yogurt bowls topped with fruit and granola. Just know there’s usually a line at peak morning times." - Marti Buckley

Google
Absolutely unreal. There were no tables available when we got there, so they gave us a beeper. We took the time to see the cathedral nearby, and came back to have the most AMAZING brunch. Everything was perfect: food, waiters, location, atmosphere (we talked a whole lot to the people at other tables)! The star of the show to me was the cinnamon roll, it's got a gooey and soft texture that I haven't had before. Really good! My only general complaint is that the portion sizes are too small...you know the food is good when the only problem is that there isn't more of it!

Ben Hickman

Google
Amazing modern brunch right next to the cathedral. Great coffee and food, we did have to wait for a table (where good don't you in San Sebastien), but you are given a fob that tells you when it's ready and to head back. Worth the wait. Perfect flat whites, and everyone loved the food. It was so good we came back again on the last day of our holiday.

Antonio Sanchez

Google
Trendy (and therefore very busy) cafe near the Cathedral serving authentic coffee creations and other specialty drinks. The food is also excellent, both pastries and savoury options, especially their avocado toast. Avoid typical brunch hours during weekends or be prepared to wait 30+ minutes. Service is efficient and friendly. They offer several single origin coffees with a mild roasting.

Artur Riwiera

Google
Very friendly staff. Nice location and well designed interior. Unfortunately coffee itself did not live up to our expectations. Both double espresso and single origin espresso were quite sour. Still - might be appreciated by others, not our taste though.

Fábio Gamito

Google
Perfect for breakfast or lunch! The cappuccinos are absolutely spot-on, and the food is incredibly fresh and delicious. This has become my favorite breakfast experience in town. The staff is also super friendly and welcoming — thank you for all your hard work!

Google
I found this cute little café while walking through San Sebastián. The employees are very friendly, speaking English was no problem. The avocado toast, the açaí bowl, my cappuccino and the cookie tasted all very, very good. I can highly recommend this place. Thank you guys, I’ll definitely visit again 😍

Google
We popped into this spot for an iced coffee. We ordered two iced lattes with oat milk. This spot is a firm favourite across this region of Spain for a reason!!! Their coffee is great, and would highly recommend. We took our drink to go :)

Eric L

Google
Great coffee. Nice people. Good food. Loved the flat white, cortado, avocado toast and fresh squeezed orange juice. These guys know what they’re doing.

Yelp
Great coffees and avocado toasts! Perfect spot to grab breakfast to start the day! Instagram: OAT my goodness, this was DELICIOUS!! Avocado Toasts Oatmeal @OldTownCoffeeRoasrers San Sebastian

Yelp
This place is a gem, and if you can find a spot outside, you will have a perfect view of the cathedral in downtown. When it was my friends birthday we asked for champagne, they told us they didn't have any but then went next door and got some for us. It was so sweet!!! Their avocado toast is AMAZING and you have to try their latte.

Yelp
LISTEN UP!! Food/Drinks - 10/10 Staff - 10/10 (they speak English which as an American tourist is so so helpful!) Vibes - 10/10 Indoor (very limited) and outdoor seating. What I ordered: Iced latte with oat milk (ordered a side of honey since they did not have vanilla) The Lot toast If you are an American tourist specifically, and wanting a similar taste of home while still experiencing the local coffee shop scene, I cannot recommend this place enough.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Great and professional coffee and food. Coffee is made for perfection. Recommend the Cappuccino.

Yelp
I'm an early bird and was looking for a cafe that was open early. Staff were friendly and helpful. Delicious americano and pastry here. Loved sitting outside in the cool San Sebastián weather.

Yelp
This is one of those places where you look at the photos and you question whether or not you really want to eat avocado toast, coffee, parfaits, etc. in san sebastian and the answer is a resounding yes. Their menu is fairly simple, with various combinations of toast. The ingredients are what makes the place - fresh avocado, tomato spread, jamon on top of the details: the sesame seeds, sprouts, presentation. What we got (note: went two days in a row, back to back) - The Lot: avocado toast + tomato spread + jamon. Delicious - Caprese bagel: bagel wasn't what you expect from new york, but apparently the caprese combo was super fresh - Tomato & Jamon toast: Also delicious - Parfait: The fruits on this were amazingly sweet. The granola was nice and crunchy As far as drinks go, the presentation is amazing but the drinks tastes delicious: - Cold brew coffee - Iced americano - Fresh squeezed OJ - Matcha latte Can't go wrong with any of the drinks or the food choices here. The waitstaff is super friendly. Expect to wait a little bit since this place is super popular!

Honest M.

Yelp
It's a nice convivial place but not worth a wait in line - the staff is friendly and the coffee good - food so-sp

Yelp
Very unpleasant experience; tantamount to racial discrimination We wanted to wait around for a table to enjoy the food/coffee that we purchased because two tables were about to be available. But the male waiter asked us to leave, citing excuses including the store would close in 30 minutes, a waiting list (even though there were no other customers waiting around,) etc. It was around 11:30am on Sunday (3/12.) Later I found out the store closes at 1pm on Sundays. It's truly unfortunate. It's a racist place. They want your money, but not your presence.

Susan S.

Yelp
Great flat whites and good avocado toast. Dry carrot cake loaf. The menu is limited. Service is adequate.
google avatar

Alana R.

Yelp
American visiting. Very modern and hipster place for breakfast. You download the menu which was a pain for us because of cell phone service. When I finally got it downloaded, I could not get it to translate so the descriptions didn't help me. I wouldn't call any of the staff particularly friendly. I had The Lot which was good and a mocha. My companion had the avocado toast and an Americano; he said both were great. Honestly, most cafes use fresh ingredients. I did not see this as a stand-out place to visit.
google avatar

Randal C.

Yelp
This is a great little café right next to the Buen Pastor Church. If you don't look closely, you'll miss it! (*Thats what happened to me the day before!) their cappuccinos are very tasty and they have some good breakfast items as well. I will definitely go back. (*Theres also a little newsstand, a hallway really, right next door that is also excrement.)
google avatar

Renee H.

Yelp
Loved this coffee shop! Best coffee in town with the nicest staff around. My coffee with oat milk was delicious. The owners are fantastic. I had the peanut butter and banana toast which was fantastic. What a gem of a place.
google avatar

Ecmie L.

Yelp
Great breakfast spot! Coffee was really good here along with the avocado toast and yogurt with fruits.

Ben C.

Yelp
Best coffee in San Sebastián, and frankly, on par with the best Aussie or New York boutique coffee spots in a lovely, friendly spot. And there is a food menu too, but the coffee is the reason to go there.
google avatar

Paige D.

Yelp
If you are visiting from America this is a great place to get breakfast starting at 9am that resembles some of the goodies back home like avocado toast! The staff here was very friendly and prices were decent. They have toast and bagel sandwiches to choose from, in addition to granola and such. The place is cute--more contemporary and there is indoor and outdoor seating. Recommend both the Salmon Bagel and the Avocado Toast that comes with a Poached Egg and a super yummy Crushed Tomato Spread on the bottom (tomatoes are soooo much better here)!!

Yelp
This was the best high-end coffee bar we found in San Sebastián. Unfortunately, the famed Sakona was on holiday so we did not have a chance to try it in their shop. We did try it at the Loaf and it was very good. However, I would choose old town if you can't get Sakona in the shop. Old town coffee makes a really nice flat white and latte. We went twice in 4 days. The avocado and tomato toast was average and the reason for the 4-star score.
google avatar

Denise M.

Yelp
Best coffee in town! We were visiting San Sebastian for a week and didn't miss a day at Old Town Coffee. The food was great and the staff was so friendly. We enjoyed talking with the staff and especially loved Camille who was adorable and so sweet! Do not miss this spot!
google avatar

Benji W.

Yelp
Friendly staff and a great spot to grab a coffee and a small bite before heading off exploring San Sebastián. Cozy little shop with a nice and warm feel about it.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice place for breakfast, busy and fast people there. Service from a tablet, coffee but where is the sugar. No shots in your coffee as i was told it is not natural. My fav is a latte with caramel or hazelnut. Not available here. Pity. So just 3 ***

Kendra W.

Yelp
Best cortado I've ever had. Plus everyone was so, so kind. I had the avocado toast, and it was a really great way to start the day.
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee, avacado toast is good, friendly service. Also had the butter and jelly. Easy to find in the shadow if the cathedral in old towne
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing. First, it's a great place to go if you want to hear English and its various lilts and twangs. Second, it's the only coffee that my husband has declared good enough to not need sugar. Third, the food is simple but good. I recommend the overnight oats, caprese bagel, or avocado/tomato/ham bread.
google avatar

Logan C.

Yelp
Best coffee shop we visited on during our stay in San Sebastián, you gotta check this place out. The owners are great group of guys, spoke perfect English and were beyond friendly. We came here multiple times our on trip and had a great experience every time. We had cappuccinos and cortados, both were on point, also enjoyed the overnight oats, the butter + jam and the salmon bagel. Plenty of outdoor seating. It gets busy, for good reason, so come early or be patient and wait it out. Good vibes!

Yelp
Stopped in for a coffee in the afternoon and had a flat white and a blondie cookie. We sat on the patio, sipped our coffees, people watched, and took in the scene. The staff here was super friendly, and I loved the laid back vibe inside the shop. Being so close to shops and other busy streets, you'd think there'd be a ton of bustle. I would definitely come back if I'm in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Bia S.

Yelp
Really great place to grab a light breakfast before exploring San Sebastián. I ordered an iced latte (such a rare find in Europe), fresh orange juice served in a wine glass, and the classic tomato paste on bread you see very often in Spain but with avocado! I really liked the coffee and there was limited seating but we were able to get a nice and comfortable table. The staff was super friendly and they even spoke Portuguese so I had fun interacting with them!

Yelp
We are so lucky to have come across Old Town, because they serve arguably the best coffee in San Sebastian. It's a bit hard to find because, at the time, the address online was wrong/old. They are located inside the San Martin market, and you can see them as soon as you walk in. We were greeted by the friendliest and most welcoming face- Marcio. He was so interesting and we had so much to talk about we spent over an hour there just chatting about how he got into the business and why coffee is so important to him and his partner Ricky. It was clear that he really took pride in serving the best coffee with the freshest ingredients. He also explained that he only sold food that he liked to eat himself. They truly take the time to know where their products are sourced from (always local), and make sure that the workers from these sources are treated well. Besides the amazing coffee, they also serve a great selection of regular and vegan-friendly pastries, from cookies to cupcakes to jamón sandwiches. Of course, they are in a nice big market so you can also walk around and check out the fresh food around. In fact, Marcio says the lively morning market is a sight not to be missed- where locals bring their produce to sell (we never made it early enough since we'd walk and get distracted before we arrived). Marcio also had so much information to offer about the town. We were heading to Barcelona in a few days, and he gave us several great coffee shops to try there (which ended up being extremely helpful). You can't get this kind of customer service just anywhere- it's clear that these guys love coffee and what they do. They had only been open six months when we visited in May, but were already easily the best coffee shop in town. These guys are always on the hunt for the best beans to serve and honestly care about where it comes from. It helps that they are both such friendly and personable people. You really can't have it any better than this.

Yelp
We loved this place!! We had breakfast here two days in a row!! I was so craving some American breakfast and this place was perfect. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
My husband and I are really fussy about coffee (well, I may be the fussiest of the two!) We live in Seattle and it's our "thing" to seek out good, small local coffee spots everywhere we go. I REALLY really prefer "third wave" cafes and I prefer to support small local spots. There's only two spots in town for this - here at Old Town and then at Sakona. This time around we had stayed in Bilbao and just driven over to San Sebastian a couple of times - had we stayed in San Sebastian this time (or when we do next time), we would definitely have pinged back and forth between the two. We just got coffee (wish we'd gotten food!!) but the coffee was excelente. They don't appear to roast their own, but they serve locally-roasted (Spanish) coffee. (The beans that we purchased to bring home are called "Nomad", roasted in Barcelona.) The atmosphere was lovely, it's a small, cozy place. The barista was really nice and very patient with my Spanish! bonus points, they were playing great music and I had to run back in to ask the name of the artist that was playing when we left. San Sebastian is one of our favorite - if not our very favorite - places to go. We can't wait to go back and spend each morning grabbing our coffee here & at Sakona to just sit and enjoy the incredible atmosphere of these even more incredible city.

Yelp
If you're looking for the perfect coffee or flat white while in San Seb look no further than Old Town coffee. I visited this coffee shop each day of my vacation in town because I was so pleased with the offerings. The service was prompt and friendly, prices were reasonable and coffee and good were delicious. Everything we ordered was good, can't go wrong.
google avatar

Jacqueline S.

Yelp
The best coffee in San Sebastián! It is owned by 2 Brazilian guys who are friendly and certainly figured out the right balance between great coffee and tasty pastries. Unlike many other coffee shops in town, they make real foamy lattes with great coffee from Brazil versus all the "Nespresso ish" type - which seems to be the only option available in the city for all other coffee shops. They also have great fresh pressed juices and whole wheat pastry options. Loved this place!! Their location is a bit hidden. Just look for the local market. It is located inside.

Javier M.

Yelp
Old Town Coffee is on nice street that's closed off for pedestrians only. It's in front of a huge cathedral and there are tons of flowers everywhere. The breakfast menu is simple, yet everything on it sounds so good. I had the salmon and cream cheese bagel and it was great. I had a green tea also and I loved it. Also, the WiFi is excellent
google avatar

Rollins L.

Yelp
Great quality. Cute, cozy coffee shop. Great service. Prices are a little high, but the sizes were worth it. Iced latte was quite large, and delicious. Will definitely be back. Not a lot of seating. Laptop friendly. Free WiFi.
google avatar

Eliane B.

Yelp
We ran here before starting a 5 hour car ride to barcelona and arrived 11 mins after they closed the kitchen for breakfast. However, the owner very, very kindly offered to pull together some toasts. Since we didn't have time to run anywhere else and were feeling a bit worse for wear after a big night in San Sebastián, this was SO appreciated! What excellent service. On top of that, the meal he whipped up was amazing (toast with tomato spread, herbs and olive oil and topped with Jamon), the coffee was good and the pastries were heavenly (especially the cheesecake). Highly recommended
google avatar

Lissan C.

Yelp
English speaking barista, professional barista I mean. Great coffee worth the walk. Nice afternoon break in an AC environment, however it is located inside a market hall. I still love it tho for the quality of coffee.
google avatar

Bruno G.

Yelp
Their coffee is amazing and the service was outstanding and friendly. A great place to start the day or a afternoon boost.
google avatar

Lenny G.

Yelp
The proprietors are very friendly and knowledgeable about coffee. It's a coffee bar in a public market. Lots of fresh fruits, veggies, and meats to purchase there. Excellent espresso here!
google avatar

Miriam A.

Yelp
The concept is good but the delivery is disappointing. First, the bathroom has no soap which makes me wonder how are staff members washing their hands. I hope I don't get sick. Bread in my tomato, avocado, egg toast was soggy as if the tomato had been seating on the bread for a while. It was also weirdly cold as if it had been in the refrigerator. Not pleasant. My oat milk café con leche was not filled all the way up. I do not enjoy my glass of fresh squeezed orange juice filled with ice. I feel like there are much nicer and more reasonably priced places in this city. They probably think that it's fine for tourists because they don't expect a lot, but it doesn't represent the city the way many other restaurants in the area do. It's assuming that tourist don't pay attention to many details but they do. Also they rush you to leave. Definitely not a good experience.
google avatar

Martin C.

Yelp
A bit hard to find, but worth it! Easily one of the nicest coffees I've had! Complimented by a choice selection of regular, vegetarian and vegan baked goods and the obligatory "iberico ham" pintxo. If the food is not to your liking, there is a full blown bakery right next to it in the market, and fruit vendors offer ready to eat cups of diced fruit.

A V.

Yelp
Ricky, the proprietor of Old Town, is super passionate about coffee (an understatement). A surfer from Brazil, Ricky ended up in San Sebastián after a stint in New York. He invests in quality, because he believes it makes a difference. His fresh milk (which can be hard to find in Spain) comes from the mountains, and he takes pride in knowing where his beans originated, how they're roasted and the coffee's flavor profiles. He also believes in sustainability, and his logo reflects his philosphy. Ask him about it. Super hospitable and friendly, he will strike up a conversation and before you know it, your capuccino is on the table with a shot of water, and you're talking about life, passions, travel and love. Old Town is a delightful coffee bar in a sea of fresh market goods-- bread and pastries, fresh fruit and vegetables, prepared Spanish delicacies, jamon (of course!), and newspapers and magazines. This is where to go to get a proper cup of coffee.

Yelp
Over three weeks we went to many (most?) of the coffee bars, coffee shops and cafeterias that sell coffee and breakfast in San Sebastián. This is probably the best coffee. Food is also really good. Worth the wait!
google avatar

Wolfgang G.

Yelp
Best coffee in town. Nice people good food, a lot of different coffees. Good place in San Sebastián.
google avatar

Micah C.

Yelp
Really tasty coffee and good service. For those visiting in the summer they also have a nice iced latte and a few tables outside to enjoy your drink or their brunch menu.
google avatar

Renee V.

Yelp
Amazingly good! My family and I are visiting from San Francisco California and have been in search of a good coffee shop here in San Sebastián. After trying out a few places this is definitely our favorite. We ordered the iced Latte, croissant, cinnamon roll, peanut butter toast, salmon toast, cappuccino, orange juice and hot chocolate! We enjoyed everything, the staff spoke English and were very friendly.
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
My favorite coffee shop here in San Sebastian. There are basically a handful here that are good, but in my opinion this is tops. The coffee service is very nice, the blends always balanced and the carrot cake fabulous. The wifi here is also great, which is a rarity in SS. I'm so glad the warmer weather is here so there is more seating outside (inside is limited at times).
google avatar

Josh V.

Yelp
Service was amazing, late art was fun, toast and jam was yummy! I'll be going back tomorrow for sure!

Jessica L.

Yelp
Really good coffee. It is IN the actual supermarket part of the market area in the corner. Not in the courtyard or book/electronics store. Cafe au lait was excellent and the fresh squeezed orange juice was really refreshing.

T S.

Yelp
Awesome little spot with spot on breakfast items that don't skimp on veggies unlike the rest of the town. Great yogurt and coffee and very friendly staff.

Gregg B.

Yelp
Best coffee I could find in Donostia. I tried their V60, cappuccino and latte. They were all great. Highly recommend. The owner is friendly too!

Daniel K.

Yelp
Amazing coffee and service! Went a couple of times within a matter of days! A must try for all:)
