The 12 Best Affordable Restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"This stretch of West Phoenix is often overlooked, but those who are tapped in know it’s home to some of the city’s best restaurants — Old Town Sarajevo among them. Open since 2000, this cozy spot serves homestyle Bosnian food with a focus on comfort and tradition. Cevapi are the signature: grilled minced beef sausages served with homemade somun bread, sour cream, and a peppery sauce. Portions range from five for $9.99 to 15 for $16.99. Also worth ordering are the stuffed cabbage rolls and Bosnian gulas, a slow-cooked beef stew with a paprika-rich broth. This is one of the few places in town for halal Bosnian food, and possibly the most satisfying." - McConnell Quinn

Very cozy place! The owner was very nice. He was enthusiastic to teach me about Bosnian culture and how their dishes are eaten. The coffee is very soothing, I was intrigued that Bosnian didn't use a filter when drinking their coffee. I was nervous at first, but the owner was kind enough to show me. The food here is spectacular. I forgot what I ordered, but I believe I ordered the cevape. The portion was very good for the price, and it was served to the perfect warmth. I totally recommend this place! 🇧🇦

Google
This place is amazing with great food and phenomenal service. Our first time trying Bosnian/ Sarajevo food and it was delicious. The recipe is simple and the food look also simple until you try it and you and taste the complexity of its flavors. You can tell there was a lot of care preparing this food items. We had a great time looking at their decorations, listening to their music and living the moment. Absolutely a great experience and will recommend to friends and family. Come and see this location. You will leave completely satisfied and with a smile in your face.

Google
This place is amazing! So cute and authentic inside! Service was amazing and such nice people! Loved the food and environment so much. The music videos added to the experience and the coffee was delicious! I will be back and highly recommend.

Google
I was so excited when I had the chance to eat here for their halal Bosnian food! Food and service was 10/10....I was too pleased. I got the cevape (with 5 pieces of meat) which the bread was fresh, homemade and very soft...and the stuffed cabbage rolls and wow the meat was so flavorful and soft...I enjoyed every bite! Definitely give them a try!

Google
the flavor is very good. i haven't eaten this good in the US. don't be fooled by the exterior, the atmosphere inside is perfect. only the waitress needs to be a little more friendly.

Google
This place is clean, cozy, and beautifully maintained. We visited on a friend’s recommendation—he’s from Bosnia—and we’re so glad we did! The food was completely new to us, and it turned out to be a fantastic experience. The sausage dish was flavorful, and the fresh bread that came with it was amazing. The Bosnian coffee had a bold, unique taste—much stronger than regular coffee—and although a bit grainy, the traditional presentation made it really special. The atmosphere was calm, and everything felt authentic. While the waitress was brief, the service was efficient and respectful. Overall, it was a memorable dining experience, and we’re definitely looking forward to coming back. Highly recommended!

Google
Beautiful atmosphere, really good food. I'm glad we found this place ❤️🌻 We had goulash and cevapi, they were both wonderful! The Bosnian sodas were really good too especially the one with herbs in it (it was Cockta I think)

Google
Fantastic restaurant! The staff was excellent. They were very attentive, friendly and made some good recommendations. They were also on hand any time we needed something. The food was amazing! We had the cevape (regular and spicy), Sarma, Bosnian coffee and baklava. The sausage was great, with a delicious red chutney style sauce and a doughy/fried bread that was perfect. The spicy sausage was our preference. The cabbage rolls were great and had a wonderful vinegar sauce that was a perfect flavor balance. The baklava was a perfect lighter sweetness that was soaked and chilled, served like a slice of pie. It went oh so well with the coffee that was best black. The decor is also very nice here, sets a great mood. Parking was a bit limited, but you can find space in back if the front is full. Prices are standard, maybe a bit high, but portions are good. Go have a meal, you'll be glad you did!

Yelp
They were closed. Not sure how Yelp had reviews from late June and early July. The sign on the door said they are closed indefinitely since June 2nd

Yelp
Wow! This place is a gem and has won a spot as one of my favorite places in all of the valley! The food was delicious! The service was great! The decorations are beautiful! And the prices were unbelievable! We walked through the front doors and were immediately transported to a new place. To me it felt like stepping into an old European set. For $33 we had dinner for two plus dessert! (We did get a free dessert for being first timers at the restaurant - did I mention the service was great?) Can't wait to go back and try other items on their menu!

Yelp
Just moved to Phoenix like 3 months ago and have been craving some burek!! I'm from STL and my best friends family made the best Bosnian dishes! The guy working was very friendly! Small little restaurant, I got my food to and it took less than 10 minutes! Very quick! Sooo good! Only downfall was it's 35 mins from me haha! The meat burek/pita was amazing!

Yelp
Our Bosnian friend brought us here 10 years ago and we were hooked from the first bite! The food is freshly made, wholesome, and absolutely delicious. Such cool decor, and extremely friendly service. Highly recommend, we will be back!

Yelp
One of the best Bosnian meals in my life! The food was spot on authentic Bosnian, and I lived there. The cevapi was perfect (meat rolls) served with fluffy pita bread. Eat this with raw onion l, ajvar (red pepper dip) and sour cream... so delicious! The sarma (cabbage rolls) and the pita (cheese and meat filled pastry) are amazing! Had this wonderful server who told us all about the food and suggested dishes. They served up the food family style which was perfect for our group of 7! Even ended with Turkish coffee and four kinds of desserts: baklava, apple roll, and a meraigne cake. The decor was as old town Sarajevo, and was spot on! So great inside the non descript outside. Loved the attention to detail! Overall, an amazing experience! Thank you Sarajevo was a fabulous time!

Yelp
All out worth the stop ....... From your card to find anything good in Arizona this was beyond Arizona. This was like New York quality food. Everything was amazing, but that stuffed cabbage was the best stuffed cabbage I've ever had.

Yelp
First of all, do not let the uninviting surrounding of the restaurant fool you, the inside is so cute, took me back to some parts of my own country. Our server was such a nice lady. I definitely felt at home. She was also very quick with everything which I loved. The food was absolutely amazing. We had the spinach pita and cevape both of which were amazing and very fulfilling. Definitely will go again whenever I feel homesick.

Yelp
If you think I rated this restaurant with 5 stars because it was amazing well my friend you are correct...except 5 stars just aren't enough!! There is no doubt everything on the menu is homemade with simple yet fresh ingredients and just a lot of love and tradition. I would love to tell you what dish was my favorite but fortunately everything was so good I can't decide. I have a feeling the dishes I have yet to try will also be 10 out of 5stars!! p.s the best part is that you leave feeling full yet not heavy so it's a win win

Yelp
Food was amazing and delicious. The Old Town Sarajevo restaurant remind you of back home. Great service !!!

Yelp
This is a hidden gem! The restaurant is deceptively big once you enter into the small strip mall door. The food -- amazing. A Bosnian friend gave me a couple ideas of what to order, and the water told us those were excellent choices and suggested some other dishes. My brother and I shared everything. Basically, it is similar, but very different to other Mediterranean food. Phyllo, bread, and meat feature heavily, but the spice profile is so different that Greek, Turkish, Lebanese, and Persian cuisine. (I love them all, but they are all different.) The desserts were sweeter than what I was used to from Greek and Turkish. Service was friendly. They are closed on Tuesdays. Come here, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Yelp
First time at a Bosnian restaurant. We were greeted and welcomed like at someone's home. The ambiance is very authentic from what I can tell. The food was really good for our first time experience. Definitely would be back!

Yelp
We see this restaurant everyday we leave from the gym across the street for a few years now. We wanted to try something new and we have Sarajevo a try. The young man who attended to us was very nice and helpful. The atmosphere was great and relaxing. The food was of course delicious. If you're in the area give them a try, you won't be disappointed .

Yelp
this has been my first time to come to Phoenix, Arizona and I could not say no to the food that is served in the restaurant old town. I had Burek and Cevape, and immensely took me back many many years in my life. This is a place that besides a great food gives emotions quality. words can describe how delicious the food is in general as well as the service of these excellent hearted people who work there. Greetings from an Kosovo Albanian who loves your food and loves you guys

Yelp
The food is great. The owners are very friendly. The restaurant is beautiful inside, based on the old buildings in Sarajevo, it really feels like you are in a whole other country especially with the friendly staff. The food is very affordable and would highly recommend coming here.

Yelp
What a lovely restaurant! We enjoyed the wonderful homemade Bosnian food, friendly service and charming decor. The lepinja (bread) was outstanding, and the begova corba (soup) was the best I have ever had (including in Bosnia). We loved the cevapi (beef sausages) too. If you order this, make sure to get it with kajmak (clotted cream). We are so glad we stopped here before leaving Phoenix.

Yelp
Once you walk in, you are transported to a Mediterranean city. It is beautiful inside, spacious and welcoming. The food is authentically delicious.

Beth W.

Yelp
Beautiful indoor space, nice wait staff. First time having Bosnian food. We ordered pita with ground beef and the cevape. The cevape was lovely, the onions were a nice accompaniment. We got all of the side sauces (sour cream and avbar). The pita was nice - I think I was expecting the phyllo to be a little crispier. We also had dessert - a vanilla custard. The dough felt both a little tough and undercooked, which was odd, but the custard itself was creamy and light!

Amir G.

Yelp
Don't let the exterior fool you, the place has great decorations and an old school feel to it once you go inside. Servers are super friendly, they do not bother you too often but at the same time do they make sure that we you taken care of. Servers are always willing to chat if we are up for it. We come here for cevapi, they aren't quite like back home, but they are good! Lamb shank is great when they have it available and the wife liked the pljeskavica (the burger patty) when she tried it. I love their baklava and hurmasice from the desert menu when they are available.

Dado H.

Yelp
I love it. THANKS MILOŜ gor your youtube chanell. Thats how i find about this amazing balkan gem. Goulash was too yumi. Salad tooo , Burek deliecious. YELP DELIVERY service no call no msg. Food was cold when i finaly got it. But with little help from micowave perfect..

Yelp
Great service and customer service. Been traveling and trying Bosnian cevapi in every city here in States but hands down Cevapi and Lepinja no questions, BEST EVER. Thanks Old Town Sarajevo for such great experience.

Yelp
Excellent Bosnian food. So happy to see Bosnian food in Phoenix. The bureks here are wonderful. Something that I noticed is that this restaurant is pristinely clean. Top-tier service!

Yelp
I've been Old Town Sarajevo's biggest fan since my first visit on 2012 - 12 years ago. I've brought friends and family here numeous times and recommended it to others. This restaurant has done no wrong. Until tonight. I haven't been in for quite a while. It is still adorably European and cute inside. We were greeted with a smile by a friendly server. There was only 1 other table with guests. The prices have gone up considerably since the last time I was here post-Covid. Everything has. But some of the items are 50% more expensive than they were. To be fair, the prices used to be VERY reasonable which was one of the reasons to love this place. We placed our order: Pileci sendvic, Bosanski lonac, spinach and cheese pita and cheese pita. The server asked me what bread I wanted with my stew-grilled or fresh baked. The pita was the first to arrive. Now, pita is the item I have had the most times, both eat in and take out, from here. It has always been a fluffy golden brown with melted cheese inside. These were dark, dark brown to almost black in places yet, at least for the spinach and cheese pita, parts were actually cool to the touch and the cheese was not melted in either pita. Neither one was hot. The Pileci Sendvic and the Bosanski Lonac were good, but not as rapturously good as in the past. The server finally came to refill our waters when we each had about 1 bite left. When she returned with the water I asked for a takeout box because I would take the pita home and heat it properly. At this time we were the only 2 customers in the restaurant. Ten minutes later she still had not returned with the box so I walked around the corner to the counter where she was deep in conversation with a colleague and asked for the box. She brought it a few minutes later and cleared our plates. Clearly we were done. We waited some more then had to ask for our bill (maybe that is a European thing, though). When we got the bill, the Pilec Sendvic which was priced at $12.99 on the menu was $13.99 on the bill. The bread, which she had not mentioned was extra, was $1.50. I know, not much, but - please be upfront with your pricing. We did pay it without remarking. After improperly prepared pitas, disappointing service (again, we were the only people in the place for 90% of our meal), and inaccurate pricing we walked out with a slightly bad taste in our mouths after 12 years of fabulousness.

Yelp
I drove an hour to try this place out, and I'll do it again because the food was that good. I tried the cevapi and it was delicious, and despite the dish consisting of sausage and bread it didn't leave me feeling overly full or greasy. I had the Bosnian coffee as well and it was stronger than I've had at other places, which is good in my book! The interior of this place is cool and the staff were very friendly. For a moment, I forgot I was in Arizona!

Yelp
Old Town Sarajevo is going to be a little bit more Mediterranean for some who have never had food from this region before. Pretty basic atmosphere. Great place to grab a quick lunch bite.

Kamran R.

Yelp
I have been coming here on and off for a long time, this time food was exactly what I wanted also great ambiance and greater service with very reasonable price. Please don't forget to order their popular home made soup with okra. Yum yum yum

Yelp
Saw the reviews, and I was pretty excited! Now, not so much. My son had the two items in the bread. The punjena is a meat patty inside the bread with a side of sour cream and some type of red pepper sauce. The patty was flavorful but an odd texture. Kind of spongy. Maybe that's the way it's supposed to be. This was our first time at a Serbian restaurant. The other dish he ordered was the Cevapi. It consists of little sausages in the same bread. I think they were the same meat as the patty, just formed into sausage shapes. The bread was great. Tangy, tender and chewy. My lamb shank was great. Fall off the bone tender and full of flavor. The mash was smooth and silky. Now for the disappointment. The wait time was ridiculously long! 20 or 30 minutes to get our order. Maybe there was a long prep time. Wasn't because the place was packed. There were around 8 to 10 people when we got there. After we got our food, it was another 20 minutes or so before the server came back to check on us. We asked for a container for our leftovers. Another 15 minutes or so. When the containers were delivered, she asked me if I wanted my tea now. Yes, please. Another 10 or 15 minutes. When it arrived, it was a cup of hot water with a tea bag. So, after all that, we won't be back.

Yelp
My first visit in perhaps two years, and it could be my last. I have been going here since it opened and have always enjoyed the food and atmosphere especially since the expansion and redesign of the dinning room. We were seated quickly but getting water was nearly impossible. It finally came in little plastic bottles. It was my birthday and we arrived at 3:30 PM on a Saturday. The menu seemed to have major errors in that they list beer and alcohol but have none. The burek is listed as pita but with the correct description. We ordered two kinds of burek, a five and ten ($15) piece ćevapi and a gulas (stewed beef over potatoes). The ćevapi were small and overcooked. The beef gulas fatty but tender. The beef burek was dry overcooked and not fully filled mostly dry phyllo. The lovely server talked us into dessert when we ordered coffee. We should not have bothered. The pastry sheet on the krempita was tough and the filling ordinary. The baklava was sopping mostly wet dough with nuts hard to find. I don't know what has happened here, but it is not good. There are better choices for Bosnian food in the west valley.
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
Amazing food and service! Restaurant is quaint but has a a homey feel. We went during the off time between lunch and dinner so the restaurant was empty. The food was delicious! This was our first time trying Bosnian food so we ordered what was recommended to us. It was great to learn about how the foods are prepared and that everything is homemade. We'll be coming back for sure!
google avatar

Sheyda E.

Yelp
Great prices and super delicious! Definitely recommend Cevape. Friendly staff! We will come back again.
google avatar

Mishel D.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place! It's such a cute and authentic feel when you walk in. I had no issues with their service but me and my guest were also the only ones there at dinner time on a Wednesday. For me I've just had better ballon food in the area. Their "cheese pita" was on the tougher side with very little cheese. I've had much fresher bureks at other bakeries in the valley. We also ordered the cevapi which was good but again the bread it came with was overly greasy and just not that came out if the oven recently taste. They were out of cabbage rolls when I attempted to order those. The freshest and tastiest item was their simple salad. Maybe we came on a bad night? I'm not really sure. The items on their menu all sounded great. But the items we received were pretty average unfortunately.

Yelp
An incredible experience from start to finish! This family owned restaurant is a "must try!". The atmosphere is calm and meticulously crafted. With stone walls, beautiful wooden awnings, and inviting furniture, Old Town Sarajevo is the perfect place to break bread with friends and family. The food is seasoned to perfection, tasting fresh and satisfying. The salad was refreshing and the soup is downright restorative! You can't go wrong here. Our server was friendly and made us feel right at home!

Agim B.

Yelp
Great ballkan traditional food. The service was great with friendly staff. A must try.

Donna` E.

Yelp
Four of us came for lunch today and three of us had never been there before. WHAT A TREAT! We took a table back in the corner where we might not disturb anyone, but there weren't many there today. I hope more people come to taste their amazing foods...I think we will all be going back. I had the Spicy Cevape, and it was SO delicious! I tasted the goulash which my friend had, and would love that too. and the red pepper dip is not to be missed, either. I have a feeling I will grow to love many dishes when I return. The man who served us was also so wonderful. Thank you for a very special lunch, and I look forward to many more. I forgot to take photos this time, but NEXT TIME I WILL! It was perfect... Donna E.

Yelp
Hands down the best Bosnian restaurant I have ever been to. We came a little over an hour before closing and received spectacular service regardless. The food was absolutely amazing-- the bread was so fresh it was as if they put it in the oven just for our order! It was so fragrant and you could smell the delicious combinations of meats and breads upon entry. The sauce tasted house-made. The apple pastry was spectacular and not too heavy. The menu is straight and to the point. There aren't a book's worth of options, which is always is a good sign that they make all of their food fresh to order. The atmosphere is great and the decor is super cute. Additionally, the food is halal, which is always a bonus for those with certain dietary preferences! I highly, highly recommend going here.
google avatar

Kristen M.

Yelp
Delicious food and amazing service! Totally recommend the cevapi! Went with a friend from Bosnia & she fully agreed! Loved it!
google avatar

Curt T.

Yelp
Wasn't that impressed with the food here. It all tasted ok but nothing wowed me. The cabbage rolls were ok and stuffed well just didn't have alot of the flavor that I'm used to in a cabbage roll. The cheese pie also didn't seem to have much cheese as well. The gyro was probably the best of the three dishes we got. But all in all not that impressed. Also during covid the staff wasn't wearing masks if that is important to you.
google avatar

Bojan B.

Yelp
Amazing place to come and try authentic cuisine from Bosnia, with great customer service and very humble people, The ambiance reminds me of the Capital City of Sarajevo... love this place and recommend everyone to try it.
google avatar

Alisha M.

Yelp
This was my first time eating Bosnian food, and my god was it good! It's a small, family-owned business but the customer service was impeccable. The cost of food was reasonable and the vibe was cute and authentic when you walked in. It's also halal! I really did love it and will be visiting again.
google avatar

Arnold T.

Yelp
I never had Bosnian food before. Looking at the menu, some dishes looked familiar so those are the ones we ordered - gyros, cheese pie and stuffed cabbage. The pictures for the house bread looked really delicious. After trying it, I thought it was just okay. All 3 dishes were fine. Based on the other reviews, I thought the dishes would excite me to eat more Bosnian food. But it didn't. Maybe we just ordered the wrong dishes.
google avatar

emily t.

Yelp
my boyfriend and i are bosnian from STL and come out here to PHX pretty often. we have a bunch of bosnian restaurants back in STL so we definitely had to check this place out and it was super worth it. the sirnica, cevape, and pljeskavica were out of this world. super flavorful and not greasy like how a lot of other places are. if you're looking for some balkan food this is the place to be :)

john h.

Yelp
Place is delicious the customer service is awesome, out of all the restaurants I've been to in Phoenix this one feels closest to a family owned restaurant in Europe
google avatar

Georgia P.

Yelp
Typical food that when you close your eyes, you feel like your eating at a kafič. Everything was delicious from the čorba to the čevapci to the Tursku kafu. Service was stellar and if you're in the neighborhood, make a point to stop by and say Prijetno!
google avatar

Dani L.

Yelp
Amazing! From service, to food -so good! Best lepinje! We had cevape, grilled chicken with lepinje and gulash, and shopska salata-all very delicious. Great job!
google avatar

Lucinda M.

Yelp
Delicious homemade soup, the bread is delicious. I loved the chicken soup. The salads oh so delicious. The cevapi- best I ever had. Save room for desserts! Mouth watering. I will be back. Oh and the traditional Bosnian coffee- nice and strong

Yelp
Absolutely recommend Old Town Sarajevo. The ambiance, food and the service were awesome!!

Yelp
1st time eating Bosnian food. It was fantastic. Mirela was taking care of us. This is a family business. Beautiful decor. Great atmosphere. The food was incredible. My son is very picky and he loved what he ordered. The desserts were great too. Lots of fun. I'm coming back.
