North Carolina’s Olde Raleigh Distillery Wants to Take Bourbon Title From Kentucky | Eater Carolinas

"Currently under construction in Zebulon, North Carolina and slated to open in late 2020, this family-owned craft-spirits distillery is led by proprietor, master blender and distiller Brandon McCraney and focuses on small-batch whiskey blends. The operation aims to put the Triangle region on the map as a bourbon destination rather than leaving the spotlight to Kentucky; plans at launch include a signature blended bourbon as the flagship, followed by cask-finished limited-release whiskeys, a house-made heirloom bourbon, and a line of vodka and gin called the Century Club. McCraney—who has traveled extensively to study distilleries, amassed a collection of hundreds of whiskeys, and taught master-series classes—frames the brand as community-minded, emphasizing farm-to-glass environmental and economic benefits. Located just seconds from neighboring restaurants and shops, the venue is intended as an inviting after-work or evening gathering spot that contributes to downtown revitalization and gives back to the local community." - Melissa Howsam

After years of enjoying and experiencing wine, cognac, beer, we started to have interest in whisky, especially Bourbon. We did research and found Olde Raleigh Distillery, fascinating with the story and the YouTube on their website, we booked a tour to learn more about the distillery and the Bourbon whisky. Entering, we found the distillery very simple but elegant, nice atmosphere and gave us a nice feeling. We were greeted and assisted by cheerful Kristy and Roy was the one to give the tour. Roy was very informative, very polite, the smell of the distillery and the opportunity to smell the barrels was fantastic. Ending the tour, we enjoyed the flights of the 3 whisky each of our choices and the conversations with Kristy and Roy. My husband also ordered a smoked whisky of his choice (not the typical Old Fashion) which was out of this world. Best wishes to Brandon, the owner of Olde Raleigh distillery who is brave to give up many things to open the distillery in Zebulon. And thanks Kristy and Roy for the fabulous time. We will be back!!!

We were passing through North Carolina and had some time before flight and decided to find something to do and looked up distillery and found Olde Raleigh Distillery and went to it. Pulled up outside and looked like a great place looking from the outside. We went in , just missed the bourbon class . But sat down and Kristy told us about everything, the history, the owner, and the bourbons . She was detailed and made it fun and interesting and explained the tastes of all the different flavors of the bourbons . We are from Nebraska and we will definitely come back and have the Brandon give us a tour . And a course to see our new friend Kristy . We have been to quite a few different distilleries and this was hands down one of the best experiences and we have not even down the tour yet . And we purchased some bourbon online and some great shirts and hats too . Thanks again, we’ll be back and tell everyone about the greatest tasting bourbon

After years of enjoying wine, cognac and beer, we started our interest in whisky. We researched and found Olde Raleigh, fascinating by their YouTube story, we decided to book a tour. The tour cost $30/person including a flight of 3 whisky of your choice/person. Very nice, elegant ambiance. We were assisted by Kristy at the counter and Roy for the tour. Kristy and Roy both were knowledgeable and nice. We enjoyed very much the conversations with them. My husband ordered a smoked whisky and it was super tasty, out of this world!!! We applaud Brandon, the owner to gave up almost everything to create this fantastic distillery. We will be back.

What a fabulous tour we had when visiting Olde Raleigh Distillery! We had good college friends in town and were looking for something to do when we stumbled upon Olde Raleigh Distillery Tour. Our tour guide, Dominic, was personable and knowledgeable. We learned about the process of creating their product and had a fun time doing it. The tour ended with a bourbon tasting. Hailey, the bartender, and Dominic were great with walking us through the flavors and nuances of the tasting. I highly recommend stopping by this unique gem.

We happily travel 3 hours to get to Olde Raleigh Distillery and are so blessed to be members with access to Brandon’s exclusive blends! Brandon and Nicky have built not just a business around the love of quality bourbon but around the love of people and an amazing community. And the team that works with them has so much heart. Stick around for delicious cocktails and make new friends. Kristy and Haley are the best bartenders in the world!

Google
An impromptu Fathers Day/Birthday drive brought us down from Richmond to tour this Veteran owned business. After the very informative and entertaining tour provided by Dominique we enjoyed a tasting poured by Kristy. Definitely worth the 2 hour trip, we’ll be back, for a longer visit.

Google
Came to Olde Raleigh for a tour and tasting and it did not disappoint! Dominique and Hailey were both fantastic, and the bourbon is unique and top-notch. Highly recommend the Barrel Proof #2, the coffee bourbon, and the honey bourbon!

Kristi and Sam were great hosts. Super knowledgeable behind the bar and the quick walk thru they gave us. Definitely a must stop!

Yelp
Tucked just off Main Street like a secret handshake, this distillery is where big flavor meets small-town charm. It's a place where the stills serve as a beautiful backdrop, the drinks pour smoother than gossip at the diner, and the locals say the spirits are only half the reason folks come back. Sink into their seating like it's giving you a bourbon-scented hug. With cozy nooks, repurposed barrels, and wood tones warmer than your grandpa's campfire stories, this is where rustic charm meets 'never leaving this spot' comfort. Whether you're rocking on the porch with a cigar or kicked back inside, behind the bar you'll find Johnny and Kristi--part mixologists, part mind readers, and all-around good-time specialists. They got a pour smoother than a Sunday sermon, and a charm could sweeten straight bourbon. Come for the booze, stay for the buzz--it's Main Street's best-kept not-so-secret. Cheers!

Yelp
We started to interest on Whisky recently, found Olde Raleigh website, saw the video of Brandon, the owner, saw his passion on the Bourbon, then decided to book a tour. The distillery, Kristy and Roy who work there made the place so worth of visiting . The tour was conducted by Roy with lots of information for beginners like us. Kristy who guided us on the 3 choices of whisky for the flight which included in the tour. My husband ordered an extra smoked whisky, it was really cool. We were very happy that we chose Olde Raleigh Distillery to visit and to experience the tour. Keep up with the great work guys! We will be back!!!!

Yelp
What a phenomenal find as a bourbon lover!! Strolling Zebulon and stumbled upon this gem. Christy was wonderful, knowledgeable, kind and witty. Our cocktails were amazing! The artisan cinnamon apples that garnished my Apple Butter Old Fashioned were delectable. These crispy treats need to be packaged and sold. The Smoked Old Fashioned's were perfectly done. This being our first time we were welcomed with open arms by the patrons and staff.

Yelp
Wonderful bourbon tasting with Kristy and tour with Roy. Our fav was the honey blend. Above and beyond. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
We enjoy stopping in at local distilleries in our travels around North Carolina.....We have been meaning to stop in here for a while because we're in Zebulon often and pass it by. We finally got around to it on a Saturday night. We found parking in the street a couple doors down from the distillery. It was relatively busy but not crowded and we easily found seats at the bar. The bourbons were great, we tried tastings of two of them but we especially loved the cocktail menu. We had the blackberry bourbon mule and the raspberry bourbon smash, both had the #16 small batch bourbon in them and both were so good. Kristi (sp?) was the bartender and she was attentive and friendly and even customized our cocktails for our particular taste, my husband liked his more tart then sweet and I liked mine double strained. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
They don't serve food but do have great craft cocktails. The menu changes often and though it used to be a lot bigger, still has some great craft drinks. The qualify of their bourbon is indeed award winning and I often combine a few craft cocktails with a few pours of something new to try. I have purchased several bottles as well. Always a nice place to stop by on a Saturday or Sunday. Hope to try a weeknight soon. Staff is great. Nice. Personable. The owner is kind. Great place.

Yelp
Absolutely loved our drinks and the food collab with Norse! Kristy, the bartender, was fantastic! We will be back.

Yelp
We stopped by Olde Raleigh Distillery on a Sunday afternoon for a taste of some hand crafted bourbon and got so much more! Not only is their award winning blended bourbon some of the best bourbon on the market, the staff and owner are some of the best folks in the state! The space is warm and welcoming, tastefully decorated and plenty of room to spread out a bit. It was standing room only on this particular Sunday as Brandon (the owner) was offering free tours to Veterans in honor of Memorial Day. Christy and Hailey were behind the bar offering some great craft cocktails, a wealth of knowledge of the products and plenty of smiles and laughter! Brandon was very kind to give us a quick tour as he finished up his day and answered some of my crazy questions! Excellent experience all around and highly recommended stop!

Yelp
My wife and I are visiting North Carolina from Sacramento. We enjoy visiting local distilleries and came across Olde Raleigh. Visited yesterday and took a tour. Dominic was an excellent host for only the two of us. Learned a lot about the owner and how the distillery came to be. Ended the tour with a tasting of really good bourbon and we walked out with a bottle.

Yelp
I made a stop in Zebulon specifically to visit Olde Raleigh Distillery based on the recommendation of a few friends in the industry. I plopped my butt at the end of the bar and was created promptly by Hailey and Kristy. There was also a gentleman Barback whose name escapes me now. Mama Hailey and Kristy introduced the menu and Kristy told me several of the whiskeys available to taste as well as to purchase in the gift shop. After a short look, I tasted batch 13, Honey Barrels 6, and 7, along with the coffee cask finish batch 2. After tasting some of their offerings, Kristy asked if I would like to see the event space and the barrel room as a courtesy to me, being in hospitality, myself. After a quick and informative tour of the spaces, we returned to the bar. I tasted the last of a 23yr old Canadian hazmat whiskey. The hazmat was far and away my favorite, but the most complex and surprising was the coffee cask. I purchased a bottle of the coffee cask whiskey along with a stemmed tasting glass to take on vacation to the beach. Grandmother Hailey, Kristy, and the Barback gentleman (maybe Charles?) were all super welcoming, not only to myself, but to everyone else in the bar and ont he patio. They had great personalities, relatively knowledgeable about their whiskeys, and moved with speed when needed. I had a fantastic time and will be sure to come back anytime I'm through town. Thank you!!!

Yelp
First visit here, met up with some of my husbands friends for a few drinks. Can't believe Zebulon has this gem! Love the scenery, the bartender is amazing Walked in, wasn't sure what I wanted, he asked what I usually drank, brought me something he made custom.

We truly enjoy the conversations with Kristy and Roy after the tour, which also gave each of us one flight of 3 whiskeys of our choices. My husband also tried the smoke whiskey which was amazing!!! Hats off to Brandon, the owner of the distillery for his bravery on giving up everything to open this distillery. We wish Olde Raleigh distillery best wishes and we will be back!!!

Yelp
Their bourbon can hold its own -- and often surpass -- a lot of the well known Kentucky bourbons.

Yelp
I must admit the ambiance is so amazing and inviting that I felt as if I could hear it calling out to me. I was here for a wedding event and had the pleasure of meeting Ben when there was happy hour. The menu is very creative as well as the cocktails. Each drink I had the pleasure of tasting were different then the other and tasted AMAZING. If you have considered trying them out for a date night/ friends night out, don't hesitate anymore.

Yelp
This distillery was super cool. Tuesdays all their signature cocktails are half off. Bourbon was really good. The bartender was super friendly. The whole place was just really cool. Very comfortable setting with a lot of different kinds of seating from couches to bar seating. Definitely a can't miss spot if you like bourbon. They also have different kinds of beer and alcohol for those that do not like bourbon.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I are now obsessed with this charming distillery. If we lived closer, we'd be here all the time. I've toured several distilleries but never with someone so close to the process. Sam, our guide, oversees production, and he gave us lots of insight and information into the process. It was fascinating. The tasting that's included in the tour was better than any tasting I've had. It was well organized and facilitated, and I wish every tasting could be like this. Finally, the drinks....omg were they good, some of the best cocktails I've had. You could really see the passion and love behind the business and the bourbon. I cannot say enough good things about Olde Raleigh, and I hope we have the chance to return.

Yelp
A must-visit in the Raleigh area if you're a fan of good Bourbon. The owner took care of us and it was all 5 stars from the moment we walked in. We spent a good amount of time chatting with the owner about his journey and plans for the brand. I loved the attention the detail in all aspects of the tasting room and also the brand. And on top of everything, the bourbon was top notch! I recommend starting with a flight and then diving into the awesome cocktails. Will be back with friends soon!

Yelp
To say that this establishment is absolutely incredible would be a tremendously huge understatement. The atmosphere is beautiful and filled with laughter from the happy Employees and the satisfied Patrons. This place is impeccably clean and orderly. The phenomenal staff, Kristy, Hayley, and Johnny greet you with welcoming smiles and extraordinary customer service. These remarkable Employees are a vital part of being the heartbeat of such a one-of-a-kind business. Looking forward to meeting the owner, Brandon, to see the individual who is responsible for running a business that should be a model example of how ALL businesses should operate. My beautiful Wife, Sandi, and I have lived in Zebulon since October of 2017. Our only negative point concerning this business is that we did not know it existed up until a few days ago. Olde Raleigh Distillery thank you so much for having such an incredibly spectacular place for my Wife and I to come to unwind. Will be highly recommending this establishment to ALL of my Family & Friends. If you've not had the pleasure of walking through the front doors here you most certainly have no idea what you're missing out on. F I V E S T A R S

Yelp
Craft cocktails paired with an engaging bartender (Ben) in a clean sleek space with great tunes. Nice bourbon selection with their own currently aging. Attention to detail including wall art featuring their unique bottles. We were welcomed into the bar, cocktail menu, including a couple of mock-tails are on a video screen. However, they have a full selection of liquor, so Ben will make whatever you like, and he can certainly make recommendations. ORD also has an event space that recently has had pop up shops on Saturdays and a different food truck on both Sat & Sun. Definitely will be making this my watering hole in Z-Town.

Yelp
First time visitors. Enjoyed the live music from a single singer guitarist Preston Wilder from 7-10. There was a nice crowd. Some larger groups pulled tables together, so bring a crowd. We were a group of four. Two bourbon drinkers and two that chose signature cocktails. I wanted something warm on this cold night, but while you can get your old fashion smoked, all the drinks are on the rocks. Not food except snacks like nabs (crackers) and moon pies. Order from the Mexican Restaurant next door and they deliver it to you in the distillery. I loved the look of the place! Nice clean lines, open space and tall ceilings. Pretty restroom too. The bourbon was smooth and You an schedule a tasting. There is an event space connected that seemed to have a crowd for a private party and DJ. Perhaps that's why they were down to only one bar tender for a full bar. He did a good job but there was always a wait. Smokers gather outside the from door on the outside front patio.

Ralph W.

Yelp
Went here for the first time this afternoon. Pleasantly surprised. Wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable about their bourbon and craft drinks. Ben made us feel right at home. Even gave us a tour in the back where the barrels are kept. Who says bourbon can't be good in NC. I had a flight of various bourbons. Really enjoyed them, and I really like bourbon. We'll be back, I'd like to keep this place a secret, but it's to good to do so. Check it out if you get a chance, you won't be sorry you did.

Yelp
Hailey made me the BEST old fashioned I have ever had! The batch 8 in an old fashioned is the best and they need to redo that style batch again. Service was outstanding!

Yelp
Nice local distillery with unique bourbons to add to your collection. Hang out at the bar to test their batches of bourbons and take a bottle or 2 to go. They make small batches that sell out quickly.

Yelp
The BEST smoked old fashions you'll find in the triangle! I love how this place is really trying to bring the town together too. They have a huge space to rent out and do tours of the distillery. A must see!

Yelp
If you're looking for an upscale drink in the comfort of small town Zebulon, look no further. Friendly bartender that took his time to find a drink that everyone in our party would enjoy. Didn't rush us even though we came in a little on the late side and made us feel very, very, welcome.

Ashley S.

Yelp
Brandon was a great bartender! Gave us some history on how the whiskey is made. We tasted the whiskey then had the smoked old fashion which was the best we ever had. Definitely a great place to go! We will be back soon!

Shannon D.

Yelp
The distillery is one of my favorite spots in town! The owner and his wife are amazing people. The bar staff are excellent! The bourbon is fantastic. The menu offers various spirits to meet the needs of everyone. The location is convenient to several local eateries and the food trucks are always a bonus. I'm so happy the distillery landed in Zebulon, NC. I would review them with 10 stars if that was an option.

Michael C.

Yelp
Terrific experience and environment. Staff is friendly and the drinks are great. This is a must visit!
