This Is the Ultimate Destination for Cajun and Creole Cuisine

"This grocery store and sandwich shop has been around since 1982 and serves as the pinnacle of po’boys in Acadiana. When I’d fly back to New York from Lafayette, I’d bring a stuffed shrimp po'boy from Olde Tyme Grocery to eat on the plane." - Anne Roderique-Jones

Really good shrimp po boys. Right texture, excellent frying, flavors are good, just not sure about ketchup on a shrimp po boy. The side of potato fries is enough for two. You can definitely split that. Definitely gets crowded when it gets busy, but they move the orders really well. There are at least three different eating areas, which alleviates the crowding quite a bit. Parking is pretty good, considering how close it to a college. Parking on street side and across the road. If you have a trailer, you might have to get creative depending on when you come through.

Google
MUST STOP!! This is a great place. The service was amazing, very welcoming. The food is even better. The shrimp is delicious.

Google
Cute lil Cajun restaurant, great people with good customer serivce. Great prices and you get alot of meat on your Poboy. The bread they use tastes fresh and is soft. If you need a sweet treat they have plenty inside, old time sweet treats that are hard to find. Very neat and clean from inside to outside. Parking was easy. Enjoy your food to go or stay and eat inside or in there covered enclosure patio area. The bathrooms have the cutest names pogirls and poboys, many things inside on there walls will make you laugh. A good lil place to get a poboy without a long wait time and you get plenty of meat.

Google
Was visiting and a friend brought us here. Tried the turkey. My friend had the meatball, and both were so delicious. I loved the gravy. The fries (potato wedges) were also perfect. I highly recommend trying it here for fresh food and low prices. My partner and I split a whole one while my friend had a half. The fries were plenty for the 3 of us to share.

1/2 & 1/2 Po Boy No Ketchup w Fries! I Will Be Back! sucks that i didn’t get my ketchup with my fries i should have double checked , but overall 10/10 with the poboy

Went here on our way back home to Shreveport. Great portions. I got a shrimp poboy and it was huge. The half was big enough. You can get chips or get fries.the service was great and friendly.

Google
My first time here and the food is very good here. The bread is very fresh, and the fried shrimp is good. If you haven't been here before.... need to stop here. This is the best poboy I have had in over 34 years. The fries are nicely fresh cut and fluffy.

Google
The best place for a po’boy sandwich!! I could eat there everyday if I could. We live in SD and don’t get down to Louisiana very often to see family. So, the first thing I wanted was a shrimp po’boy!! A definite must stop!!

Yelp
Y'all, I just can't say enough positive things about Olde Tyme! This place has been a staple in my heart since I was little, and every time I go back it just continues to get better. The ambiance, the people, the food - it's all a 10/10. I also LOVE how they have seasonal specials to include any sort of specialty seafood or offering. Don't miss out - HAS to be on the list when you're in Lafayette.

Yelp
Yes, BUT Olde Tyme WAS the best for a long time. WAS. . . . . . . It was because they continued to use the larger, traditionally fried, shrimp for their po-boys. While all competitors went to the cheaper pre-frozen smaller shrimp. This went on for so long that our young folks lost reference and now accept the inferior as the "standard". Now, Old Tyme has joined the inferior crowd. So, theirs may still be "good"; but they certainly are not as good as they once were ! We are no longer given a choice. If I want a REAL shrimp po-boy, I must visit Delcambre, get a French bread in Jeanerette ''on my way home", peel shrimp, & fire-up my fryer. I'd gladly drive across town and pay $2 or $3 more for the "real thing"; sadly, the "real thing" is no longer available. But, I won't go for something I can get right here near my home. I ask Real Tyme to at least give us an option to buy an "original" again.

Yelp
With only a few days in town, an Old Tyme Poboy was on our list! Only took a picture of mine because I was too excited to eat the shrimp poboy. Soooooo many shrimp amd fried perfectly and not a super heavy batter. Bread is so soft and is the perfect vessel for this babies. Another in our party got the Meatball sub- holy shit- it was HUGE but he didn't come up for air and said it was the bomb. Another got the roast beef and there was so much neat on it, he needed to take a break before finishing. It's a smallish place with seating now but it was an old grocery store. The ambiance is perfect for the location next to the university! It was the middle of the week and I counted 14 people working it was NUTS! All the orders and they were so nice. Do NOT miss this place!!!

Yelp
Enjoyed a yummy poboy lunch is one of our favorite spots in Lafayette, LA. Bread was nice soft and crusty, perfect for a poboy. Shrimp were hot. Those fries stay hot forever.

Yelp
Ordered curbside. 2 shrimp poboy s, 2 fry, 2 hamburger poboy. Was very good, fresh. Curbside service was great! Love this place! Always on point! Thank you Old Time Grocery!

Enrique M.

Yelp
A classic and a Lafayette staple for sure. No gimmicks, excellent service and plenty of flavor. Consistently spot on quality and flavor. I would recommend it to everyone.

Yelp
Shared half a catfish and half shrimp po boy with my husband and it was great for a weekday breakfast. I am glad we were there on a Friday because catfish is only available then. Would love to try to oyster but we were too full to order it too

Yelp
We were on our way from lake Charles to New Orleans and we were looking for a lunch stop. I found this gem in Lafayette! Apparently they have been serving up Po boys for decades! And it shows. We got 3 full sized Po boys to share amongst 4 people and it was plenty. We got the shrimp, oyster and olde tyme special. I enjoyed the shrimp one the best by far. It was packed to the brim with friend shrimp. My second was the special as that one literally was overflowing with meat. We got them all fully dressed, best way. The sauces totally made the sandwich. When you walk in, it's deceptively large, they have a large dining room in the middle and an even larger courtyard.

Yelp
It has been too many years since I got to feast on an old Tyme grocery poboy. Everything is outstanding. If you love a hole in the wall, this little grocery style deli is Lafayette perfection. Order at the meat case and grab a fountain beverage or something from the cooler. My personal faves are the fried shrimp and ham and cheese. They are served hot. Anything fried is fresh out the grease, cooked to order. Seasonally, the fried crawfish poboy is also a winner. The poboys are THICK and that Langlinais bread is perfect-crisp enough but not messy and not too bread heavy. They are heavy on the meat and reheat well in an air fryer. Potato wedges were also better than I remembered. Tony's and ketchup on the table were the perfect compliment and they also reheated great in the air fryer. We can totally see why they have won so many awards.

Jason P.

Yelp
The name of the restaurant says it all. Nice ambiance, relaxed with indoor and outdoor (covered and uncovered options). They have a good selection of drinks by the bottle as well as fountain (Pepsi) drinks. We had the oyster poboy and it was good. The employees were all nice, friendly and helpful. We will be back.
google avatar

Courtnie L.

Yelp
It was a quick in and out. I hate that they don't serve fish poboys daily but the shrimp was pretty good. Friendly staff and clean environment.

Yelp
When you grow up surrounded by places like Phillips Grocery, Betty Davis Grocery, and Taylor Grocery (North Mississippi), it's in your DNA to like Olde Tyme Grocery. So, why resist the inevitable, right? WRONG. I don't like Olde Tyme Grocery. I love it! Hey, feed me delicious fried oysters (nom nom), and you can win my highest praise too. Lol. Food: 5 stars Service: 5 stars Ambiance: 5 stars

Yelp
What a fun and tasty old school sandwich spot near campus. It really feels like you're taking part of a local tradition when you come through to eat here. It's a walk up order service that focuses almost entirely on Poboys. They offer some other items, but you can round out your meal with any selection of convenience store like snacks and drinks that are available for purchase. Poboy itself had bread that actually tasted like French bread and fresh cut vegetables to go with your choice of fried seafood or deli meats. Sometimes places like this are more experience that cuisine, but Old Tyme definitely has some sandwiches worth coming in for.
google avatar

Yelp
Yes, a grocery store got 5 stars for food from me. No, I'm not crazy. Well, not for THIS reason anyway. We were in town for a wedding, and did a little Yelping for some grub. Old Tyme was just down the street, and the reviews, pics, and signs from God said we can't go wrong. We got a shrimp and oyster poorboy and a seafood platter to share for the two of us. It was a LOT of food, but being the soldiers we are, we pushed through are finished it all. The poorboy (aka poboy) is everything you want a Cajun sammich to be. The shrimp and oysters were fried golden, came in abundance, resting their wee heads on a fluffy bed of lettuce and tomato. The bread makes it though. Fried seafood on just any bread is a fried seafood sando. The same on a light and airy, yet toasted crunchy, Louisiana (note not French) baguette is how you get a poorboy. The seafood platter...man, i just drooled on my phone a little. It was clear the catfish, shrimp, and oysters were all childhood friends who got along great together. All of them lightly breaded, fried crispy, while still maintaining a moist and tender interior. That was especially true with the oysters. You took a bite...crunch...then got the buttery and briny hit of a fresh oyster. Dang it, I want to go back now!

Yelp
This was our first time to visit and WOW! The service was amazing and the half and half po-boys were everything that was promised!!! So happy we discovered you!!!

Sabra R.

Yelp
I recently purchased a large poor boy meat tray for a small party at my home. Everyone loved the tray. We had a few slices left the next day and they were still tasty and flavorful. I plan to purchase again soon. The staff was kind, friendly and efficient.

Yelp
I was looking in Yelp as we were passing through Lafayette. I went to the reviews and decided to give them a try. Saturday before Easter was Catfish poboy special. The half poboy was delicious. It had lots of catfish and bread was very fresh. It came with chips and a drink. On our way back home I wanted to try another kind- special was whole meatball for $7. It was great, fresh and yummy. I will definitely return.

Yelp
Super impressed!!! I am from south Louisiana and have had lots of poboys, but these poboys are amazing! We ordered on a Monday and their special for Monday evenings is the meatball sub (which you'll see in the picture) for $6.45!!!! Y'all!!! This poboy is huge! But, not just large in size but also large in flavor! They season their ground meat very well! It took my son 2 meals to finish this sub! We also ordered a half of a hamburger poboy for $9.25 which puts any hamburger to shame both in size and flavor! We ordered the whole hamburger poboy for $12.75 which had at least 3 1/2 patties but I think it had 4 patties!!!! I had the specialty poboy (half for $9.25) and it was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had!!!!! It had ham, turkey and roast beef (lots of each), brown gravy, mayo, mustard, tomato, lettuce and I added onion and cheese. It was amazing But, not only were the sandwiches amazing, the service was great! We ordered online and arrived a little early. They came to our car instantly and apologized for taking too long but I had ordered for 6:30 pm and it got to us at 6:28 pm!!! I told him we were good and there was no reason to apologize. Super friendly and attentive! Side note, we got snowballs at the stand behind the grocery and they were just as friendly and accommodating!
google avatar

Brent F.

Yelp
Best poboy I have ever had. It is a simple sandwich but what really stood out to me was how good the ingredients and how well they were fried plus how perfect the bread was. My only regret was not getting two sandwiches since I was just passing through and got it to go. Staff were friendly, there is ample seating both inside and outside as well. There is also a small market inside selling other food items and drinks. It does get busy so recommend you call in your order ahead of time if you want to save some time. Parking is easy.
google avatar

Ye J.

Yelp
Came to try out this restaurant which is also a grocery store while visiting the area. Plenty of parking around. The interior is old fashioned. Pretty busy and had a line wrapped around the grocery store area, perfect chance to grab chips and drinks while waiting to order at the counter. Got the Half and Half po-boys with shrimp and catfish. Good portion for the price, and definitely the best po-boys I've had. The baguette was soft and airy on the inside and crunchy on the outside, the fried shrimp and catfish was juicy, fried to perfection and seasoned well. Highly recommend to anyone trying to get authentic po boy!

Yelp
On our way to the LSU vs UCLA game and wanted to get a "base" in our stomach before the tailgate and wanted to try this spot. Cozy, comfy and they like their Ragin' Cajuns & Saints!
google avatar

Maggie C.

Yelp
Quick and easy. Greasy, filling, lots of snacks and drinks inside too. I had their "meat" salad with turkey. There was a ton of lettuce they used for the salad, which was appreciated since it was pretty filling. You order at the counter, then pay. They package everything to go, but if you're eating there, they will deliver it to you. We ate on their back patio, which was nice with the Louisiana weather. Poboys here are the star.

David B.

Yelp
I started my Friday morning at 8am having a shrimp po boy. Perfect way to start the day. The po boy bun was the best. Nice big fried shrimp and delicious sauce.
google avatar

Kae J.

Yelp
We were greeted by the staff right away. It did take a while to get the sandwiches, but I don't mind waiting for really good, fresh food. They were quite busy when we got there about 2 pm. Simple, good eats. We ordered the roast beef and sausage half sandwiches and they were plenty big. We shared a bag of Zapp's chips. A shout out to the staff because I was "that" customer. I spilled my tea all over the counter and the guy said "ma'am if this is all we have to worry about we are having a blessed day". We sat in the dining room, again simple "old time" ambiance. The prices are more than fair. Please support this business.
google avatar

Terry V.

Yelp
I would love to say this is the best po-boy place in town, but every time I stop by I get the shrimp. For some reason I just can't pass it up.
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
Visited here for the first time yesterday. It's a cute little sandwich shop with some fun grocery items as well. I ordered a shrimp poboy and the old tyme special sandwich. I also ordered a side of fries. The sandwiches were pretty good but didnt blow my mind. This is my first time having a poboy so i dont know if its what its supposed to be or not. I thought the sandwiches were huge and well priced. The fries were potato wedges. I wasnt able to eat many of the fries fresh and when i went back to them the next day they werent good, so def eat those fresh. The people that worked there seemed friendly, didnt have a lot of interaction with them. I got a few bags of fun LA flavored potato chips as well that I'm excited to try out. Not sure if ill be back, but I'm glad to say i went to LA and had a shrimp poboy.
google avatar

Yelp
Yes! Get here on the next plane, ship or SUV! My shrimp poboy was absolutely DELICIOUS! Shrimp were perfectly seasoned and fried. Mouth watering! Great food, fabulous service, food prepared to order. Super fresh. Zapp chips in 20 flavors and a Barbs vanilla cream soda a must! Stop in for an incredible shrimp poboy. I ordered no sauce and pickles on the side! Glorious dinner!
google avatar

D T.

Yelp
Cool place near the college. You walk up and to order at the counter. Several types of New Orleans style po boys. They serve salads also. We split a fried shrimp po boy. It was fresh & yummy with about 10 shrimp on each half. The bun was soft & fresh. It's a cool old place. Don't miss it -yummy!
google avatar

Daniella G.

Yelp
Very chill spot to grab a quick lunch Services is really fast and the staff is super friendly. I do recommend checking out the menu before and if you can order ahead of time, great cause it gets super busy. My all time favorite order is the fried oyster Po'boy, never disappoints For sure my go to place in Lafayette!
google avatar

Tristan F.

Yelp
Man, what a cozy atmosphere that really gives off that college campus vibe. The staff was super friendly, and the food was brought out really quick without sacrificing quality. The sandwich had great ratios, not letting the bread or shrimp get soggy. I went with the large Shrimp Po' Boy with a bag of chips and it was way more than enough to fill me up (good thing I was starving)! I would like to have a little more umph behind the flavor, maybe some kind of seasoning or an additional sauce.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
Awesome PoBoys with an incredible local feel. Get the Shrimp! Was hooked as an out-of-towner before moving to Lafayette 10 years ago.
google avatar

Faris M.

Yelp
Best Damn Po-boy in LA! Fast service, great true Cajun roots, and the stories that house could tell! It looks like the neighbor hood spit out a house with magical sandwiches! Just don't pass it up as you're driving by! Every sandwich is made with love, history, and heritage! It was a privilege to get the opportunity to have one. Just sad we weren't there for Muffuletta Monday!
google avatar

Glenn A.

Yelp
Best po boys in Louisiana in my opinion. Service is quick and friendly. In house seating available, but many locals take their orders to go. Food is plentiful and tasty. Recommend the shrimp or oyster po boy, but bring a friend to share the whole as there is a lot of meat on a tasty bun.
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
First class shrimp and oyster po-boys. Quick service and indoor dining and outdoor dining as well. Highly recommended.

Geslia N.

Yelp
Horrible. When I first moved here from NOLA is was the closest I could get to a real poboy. Now for almost $15 it's just horrible.
google avatar

Jason Z.

Yelp
Definitely my go to po-boy spot in Lafayette. Parking is available in their lot across the street; it can be busy as it's really close to the UL campus. The interior is as expected, old fashioned and with a full "gas station mart". There's no service, it's order and get your food and sit down and eat. Their po-boys are decent sized and delicious. I like their shrimp or oyster option. Their food is around the $10-15 range, and sides are less than $5. It's reasonably priced for 2023 and the quality and quantity put it up there for me for places to go each time I pass by Lafayette.
google avatar

Donna S.

Yelp
This is one of those places you have to go to when in Lafayette. Poor boys, poor boys, poor boys! You enter through the grocery part and order at the counter then choose chips and drinks before you pay. There are tables in the small dining room and they've created a lovely outdoor patio area. I got a half oyster and shrimp large and my friend got their signature meat and cheese (can't remember name but think I gave enough clues). I actually think she won (I got a bite). I would have loved actual cocktail sauce on mine instead of the ketschup that was on the table. To be honest, I was too lazy to get up to ask if they had any. It was "dressed" pretty light.
google avatar

Liv K.

Yelp
First off this place is adorable. Tiny little classic deli with a lovely patio area and a nice little trio of music on the day we were there. Perfect temp to sit outside and admire the "old thyme-iness" of it. Oyster po boys were okay special of the day with catfish was good and salad with shrimp offered quite a few grilled shrimp. The shrimp were just okay and on a bed of iceberg with some tomato wedges. Beer selection was very good.
google avatar

Christian D.

Yelp
This review is going to be different. It's understood that this place has great Po'Boys, but for the person who wants to visit, here's some advice. Look up the menu from pictures and order ahead, it will save you a lot of time because, yes, it's that busy. This way you can walk in and tell them you called in, you pay, then you find a seat or go on your way. If you show up without calling ahead, the line to order is on the left side of the market. Walk in, get in line, order (tell them if its to go or dine in), walk over to the cashier to pay, and then go find a table. If it's to go, wait outside for a few minutes, it can get crowded. As for the food, it's great. Soft fluffy French bread encompassing Delicious fired cajun food. Catfish, shrimp, crawdads, they're all great. I personally ordered the crawdads and it was delicious with extra cajun seasoning and Tabasco. 10 out of 10 for a great sandwich, I mean po'boy. Also, be nice when you park because parking can be limited.
google avatar

Jane G.

Yelp
I read about this restaurant in an article in the Southern Living Magazine so decided to try it out while in Lafayette. We arrived shortly after the 11:00 opening and there was already a line to place our order. There is a line to order then another line to pay for your meal before finding a seat in the room next to the counter. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. My husband and I shared a seafood platter which was plenty of food for two. It consisted of shrimp, oysters, catfish, salad, bread, jambalaya and French fries. Everything was delicious.
google avatar

Kevin T.

Yelp
Food was ok. Typical poboy. Definitely not worth 23 bucks for an oyster poboy. 12 to 15 ok.

Tom R.

Yelp
The best poboys! The large is fairly big. A half will do the trick. We had the roast beef. It was great!
google avatar

Marie B.

Yelp
I had to travel all the way to Southwest Louisiana aka Cajun Country to find the best Shrimp PoBoy. Many locals claim Olde Tyme Grocery has hands down the best Poor-boys, so of course I had to give it a try. Restaurant-grocery store is not very big but is quite quaint that is decorated with everything to love about Louisiana. It offers indoor and patio seating with commercial heaters that get comfortably warm during the winter months. It was packed with people dining in and placing/picking up to-go orders but the wait wasn't long. Staff offered friendly conversation and excellent service. I ordered a Shrimp PoBoy dressed with no mayonnaise, extra pickles and hot sauce. My PoBoy was well packaged that it was still hot when I made it back to the hotel. It was overflowing with shrimp that I saved the other half for breakfast and surprisingly it tasted pretty darn good cold. That is when you know the French bread, shrimp, and veggies are fresh. The shrimp was perfectly seasoned and absolutely delicious. I attended college what was then called USL back in 19** and had no idea this place existed. I definitely missed out. This is truly a gem in Lafayette, La. Highly Recommend.
google avatar

Robert L.

Yelp
The shrimp poor-boy was absolutely wonderful. After reading the reviews, I will try the oyster one next time. Can't wait.
google avatar

Tallya ..

Yelp
Poboys are not what they used to be. Saw roaches crawling on the wall yesterday. After that I was disgusted. It was actually right behind the register.
google avatar

Dan V.

Yelp
Really really really good poboys. Probably the best in Lafayette. I will be back for sure!!

Albert D.

Yelp
Had the roast beef poboy AGAIN! Always great. I've been a fan since the late eighties, back in my college days. I lived on OTG nightly specials, different one every night 4 days week. A whole was only $5 at the time. Half for supper and the other half for lunch. Love OTG to this day, so glad Murph's son has taken over. Quality is the same as always has been. Be in next week.
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
Friend Shrimp Po-boy was delicious. Highly recommend it. Add some Tabasco and creole seasoning and it really made it have a kick. They had other things on the menu but the staff specifically said they sells 100's of those things a day. Well I see why! Place has a nice sit down spot to eat and enjoy your meal. You can also take it to go. Great spot to get a quick bite in Lafayette!

Jeanie H.

Yelp
New to the area. Tried per recommendations did not disappoint. Food was amazing. Lots of options. Made fresh. Definitely will return
