The Best Places to Fika Swedish Style in London | Eater London

"This small chain of cafes is relaxed enough forlingering . The signature cake is the Christianshavner, a cake with a caramelized hazelnut base topped with strawberry mousse and fresh fruit. The real joy of Ole and Steen, however, is the cinnamon social, a long cinnamon pastry with cinnamon and vanilla that is intended “for sharing.”" - Alex Peake-Tomkinson

The bakery offers a wide variety of baked goods and sweet treats, with an impressive selection that looks absolutely delightful on display. The space is spacious and comfortable, with plenty of seating available for those who wish to sit and enjoy their treats. However, while everything looked lovely, the overall taste didn’t quite live up to expectations for me — more on the average side than exceptional. That said, it’s still a nice spot to stop by, especially if you’re looking for a cozy place to relax over coffee and dessert.

Ole & Steen is a Danish bakery that is a worthwhile place to visit if you are in London. It offers the opportunity to sample a wide variety of different breads and pastries. The selection is quite extensive, featuring numerous types of bread, including rye bread, various buns, sweet treats, toasties, rolls, cream cakes, and loaves, amongst other pastries. This makes it a good spot for exploring different baked goods. They also have specific menu items available only in the morning, so arriving earlier in the day is recommended if you wish to try these. The coffee here is also good. I particularly enjoyed the dishes I ordered which featured poached eggs with either bacon or salmon; these paired very well with the coffee and provided a satisfying and substantial start to the day.

Came here for breakfast (twice). They have a wide variety of sweet or savoury pastries. In addition to that, they also have a variety of drinks, matcha, and juices. The staff here are also efficient, fast and friendly. They will approach to take your orders

I usually love visiting Ole and Steen. I have visited 3 other stores apart from the one I visited today (St James) and I’ve had no problems. On my previous visits, the service has been great, the food has been delicious and the rewards are fantastic. The pastries are perfect, the cakes are delicious, the sandwiches are superb, the coffee is exquisite and the iced drinks are exceptional. However I was so disappointed in the service I received today. On first coming into the store, the customer service assistant was sour faced and unhelpful. I bought an iced drink that came with no ice and was 3/4 full. I asked to redeem one cinnamon social slice from my points and the cashier redeemed two social slices and only gave me one summer slice instead. When I questioned what my receipt showed and the loss of points, the cashier offered to give me a cinnamon social (that was redeemed from my points anyway) and a pastry, however refused to return my points that I didn’t ask to be redeemed! I spend money in Ole and Steen and this why I’ve accumulated points, I don’t expect those same points to be spent without my consent and not returned. As previously stated, I love Ole and Steen but I was not a very happy customer today, I shall not be returning to or recommending the St James store!

Google
They should have a sign out front that claims to have the best sausage roll in the city, bc it would be 100% true. It's love to post a picture of the actual thing but I ate it too fast. Absolutely outstanding! Coffee was good and so was the almond croissant.

Google
Lunch with wife niece and great nephew. Busy eatery in a busy location. Queues to order food but a good selection and we all had toasted sandwiches and coffee. All very tasty. Ground floor upstairs and downstairs. Plenty of room. Toilets clean and tidy with hot water and hand dryers. Baby changing facilities. If in need of a snack bread or pastries are all good. Definitely recommend 😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🥪☕️

I went there on Monday with my son and ordered coffee, croissants and almond bun. The coffee was nice, croissants was tasty as well. The almond bun was dry and it didn’t taste fresh at all. The place is spacious with seats upstairs and quite a few tables outside which is nice. I ordered few times bread from them and it was good quality so I would buy bread again.

Yelp
We were looking for a quick bite before our West End show and saw this bakery along our hop on/off bus. We found one and it didn't disappoint. It tasted just as delicious as it looked. Prices are reasonable. There is bar and table seating. A great stop!

Yelp
Best decision to start my London morning in the bright yet relaxing Danish bakery. Counter service with lots of table seating. I had the traditional Danish cinnamon swirl and a mocha. For an added touch, the barista decorated my mocha with a lovely flower motif. The sweet dough of the danish swirl was tender and moist. A must try on your next visit,

Yelp
We had two hazelnut chocolate croissants from here. I would rate them pretty excellent, just flaky enough and the chocolate sweet not butter. Ordered with two waters for about 10 pounds. I wouldn't describe that as affordable but it was an option near the theater before an afternoon show. Service was quick. 4 stars is because it was kind of hard to snag a table at 1 pm.

Yelp
This review is for the Strand & Waterloo location, however, the Chai Tea Latte I ordered at Ole & Steen was the best I've ever had! Amazing quality and fresh baked goods. I also had an almond croissant that was quite tasty and fresh. I'm very happy I decided to try them and would happily try their other locations. Highly recommend trying them out for breakfast when in London.

Yelp
Stopped in here for a morning pastry and a latte and it did not disappoint! The cashier was very kind and made a few recommendations. We got their popular cinnamon slice and the blackberry croissant, both of which were delicious. Big space with lots of seating. Would come back again, definitely recommend stopping in!

Yelp
Very okay. Coffee was so-so. Sandwiches were very so-so. Bought a loaf of rye bread to take home and that was quite good.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
Good selection of baked goods both sweet and savory with a full coffee menu and juices. Service was fast and you can opt for the baked goods to be heated up. I went with the Danish sausage roll which was quite good. There's plenty of seating indoors and outside.

Yelp
We went several times throughout our stay in London. It was delicious! The coffee was great and nice atmosphere. A great place to rest and enjoy a good cup of coffee and pastry.
google avatar

Mai L.

Yelp
You arrive and get in line and order at the counter. There are some tables but it's not a ton based on the crowd. We were lucky to snag a table. We order breakfast sandwiches and espresso drinks. The bread was super tasty. I got a cheese everything bread sandwich - I thought it might get toasted but it didn't so heads up - may need to ask. Quick and easy place to get breakfast so you can head on your way.

Yelp
Fantastic! So many pastries, sandwiches, coffee, and fresh juice options. Beautiful on inside with lots of places to sit. On a last note all I see in the name is Joel Osteen hahaha...and that's how I will always remember it.

Yelp
I was shocked to stumble across a Danish bakery serving up something I've only ever found in Denmark - their kanelstanf or as they call it here, the cinnamon social! I actually loved encountering actual Danish employees too, really kept the experience authentic! The individual slice was way too small and since London has no good "English" food, I went with the half to last me a day or so! For about 9 pounds, you get a great size. It's hefty, thick, fluffy, doughy, chewy, soft, cinnamony, crispy, sweet, so many amazing flavors and textures and just a fantastic pastry! Definitely the best breakfast/dessert item I ate during my trip

Yelp
The food was really really good as was my latte. Ambience not so much, just so-so. But food and drink were great.

Ian B.

Yelp
One and Steen Haymarket, London has all the charm and quality of a run down 1970s transport cafe. Give it a miss Food- Hot Chocolate is made with powder and water - exactly like the complimentary liquid at a tyre fitters The toasted sandwiches are irradiated to such a degree they are inedible rubber bullets. The staff are clueless, too many in number, don't know either the product range, offers or their jobs. Too busy checking in with one another,'if they'd like a tea,' whilst the customer line grows ever longer. Ambience- if your ideal location for any food is the morgue, you've found the right location Overall- LAMENTABLE

Yelp
We wanted a quick breakfast place so we thought we would give this location a try. Through the window the pastries looked amazing but once inside and up close, they weren't the most visually pleasing. Also, the savory breakfast sandwich options were pretty limited. Being pregnant I wasn't able to have anything with meat on it (they were all premade) so I went with an egg and cheese sandwich. While eating my sandwich I noticed that some bites had an odd sweet flavor. I guess they also put some type of jam on it that, to me, was not that good at all and just made the sandwich soggy. We came during the week but in a busy city the place was still packed. All the tables were taken and the only table I found was one that wasn't cleaned up. We moved the trash to the side of the table and during our entire meal, no one came up to clear the table. I would try other places before I return here.

Yelp
Great cafe with a pretty chill local vibe, despite being located in one of the busiest parts of London. They have a full menu of just about everything on your radar, from high-quality coffees and juices, to pretty decent food and pastries. The interior is really spacious, with two floors' worth of seating and comfy couches that invite you to stay awhile. There is table service, but you first have to order at the counter, which can take awhile given the long queues, sometimes. Coffee and teas, you also have to get yourself at the pick-up counter. My single-shot oat latte was unexpectedly-amazing, but my cheese toastie left a bit to be desired; nothing to write home about. The cookies and pastries they sell, however, are on-point. Just pick your sweet poison. If you want my recommendation, go with one of their chocolate chip cookies; they are legit! Service is friendly, hassles are few. There are worse places to be.

Yelp
This proved to be a fast place to get dessert and breakfast for the next morning. I had trouble deciding among the offerings and asked for a recommendation. The server pointed me toward the Copenhagen mess, a limited special item. As I had Eton mess in my dessert wish list, this sounded great to try. This was truly something worthy of Bake Off: a biscuit topped with cream and fresh fruit, with crunchy meringue on top. Exquisite. My husband selected a slice of chocolate cake. Traditional but oh so good. For breakfast, we grabbed a chocolate croissant and cinnamon roll. While neither was fresh, both were delicious.

Yelp
I'm really glad we stopped here after being a typical tourist and walking around London for a few hours. I had a raspberry tart and a coffee. Both were delightful and I would have them again in a heartbeat.
google avatar

Victoria L.

Yelp
So glad we happen to pass by as we were walking around. We got a cinnamon and almond bun. It was so soft and delicious. It was a perfect afternoon pick me up. The rest of the items looked good and I wish we had more time. I would definitely recommend for a treat. Service was awesome too and very informative.

Yelp
The coffee and desserts were good. They are super understaffed and several with bad attitudes. I'd try other places before I went back.

Yelp
I really loved so much about this cafe on Haymarket. It is centrally located in a sea of touristy spots that I wouldn't dare patron but also a welcome spot smack in the middle of an area where it is surely needed. I loved the deli style service where you walk in and grab your spot in line from a machine that prints an old school ticket with a number on it. But that's where the kitschy old school style ends because the space, decor and gorgeous glass displays are modern and fabulous. What caught our eye on the street were the rows and rows of stunning pastries and fresh loaves of bread which adorned the window. After getting our ticket, we surveyed our food and beverage options. While we were deciding, we sampled the most unctuous cinnamon rolls ever. I was also taken with the beautiful multigrain seed bread. They also had nice salads for take away and a menu board with different toast options including beetroot and avocado. I opted for the vegetarian quinoa carrot salad and a flat white for take away. My husband grabbed a blueberry muffin and a green smoothie. We consumed our beverages on our way out, saving our food for later. My salad was quite tasty and it came with that yummy seeded multigrain bread, and although the muffin was the least exciting of their pastries, hubby reports that it was moist and yummy. Two days later I grabbed another flat white to stay and was totally disappointed. It was luke warm and rather tasteless. Since I am a coffee snob, I headed back to Monmouth the next day where I understand lots of the locals go for their caffeine fix. Were it not for the mediocre coffee at ole and Steen, I would give this place four stars because everything else about it is really quite good. But if you're looking for coffee, I recommend grabbing it from Monmouth.

Yelp
Pastries as good as the ones I was having in Denmark (I believe that's where this chain is based and modeled after)! Recommend the custard based and cinnamon swirls!
google avatar

Kayden W.

Yelp
Amazing taste, really excellent. The price of shipping is a little bit steep, but the item is packaged in such a way that it cannot be damaged in transit, so there are no complaints.
google avatar

Sania I.

Yelp
Everything about this place was amazing and all the pastries looked really good. If you're looking for a relaxed place to drink some coffee, enjoy pastry, and take a break definitely come here. I had to get lemon pie, flat cinnamon roll ( I forgot the name), and the chocolate tower dessert. The cinnamon roll was the best out of the three and then the lemon pie. The tower "puff" dessert I didn't really care for it was too sweet and nothing too exciting. They have coconut and nut options too so try those instead of the chocolate it might be better. I would not recommend it but the other two yes definitely try it out. They have plenty of sitting and service is wonderful.

Yelp
Nice food + bread + salad + dessert . What i like most was atmosphere there. They have two floors and it is very spacious. They have pretty various and generous amounts of free samples as well. The taste was also very good and honestly i am very sensitive about bread or pastry(really). All foods are pretty nice. However * one staff was reallt not kind, i think. I was a perfect stranger at this shop and i had to look around first to catch up what kinds of food they have. At first, one staff asked me if she could help me for anything, and it was thoughtful. But** when i ordered my food to another staff, she was just too aggressive and not attractive at all. I am quite generous always about seeing all people in a very good way, but she was quite not that good honestly. I believe they should have much much better behavior if this cafe aims to keep their traditional things not only for baked stuff but also other things including making good images of their natives. Because i just met so many wonderful and polite ppl when i was traveling their country. What a shame !

Yelp
Came here for a late breakfast while on holiday. Food here was fresh and beautifully presented, the restaurant was clean, staff was helpful and ran things smoothly. I'm almost embarrassed by how good avocado toast with poached eggs was- have you ever gone back for seconds at a restaurant? I have now. Only criticism is inability/unwillingness to warm pastries - otherwise though, can't wait for this gem to make it to the States.

Yelp
I travel to eat. Sight seeing and whatever is great and all, but I want to fill myself with the pastries of the world. Ole and Steen has become my favorite place on the other side of the pond. When I die, spread my ashes here. Their cinnamon roll is the best thing ever. Their coffee is great. Their sourdough loaf is so damn soft and great with some good cheese. In two weeks I found myself here five times and I regret not going a sixth and seventh time. Just remember to grab a number on your way in, deli style. Finding a seat there isn't always the easiest thing so getting everything take away isn't a bad idea.
google avatar

Ria P.

Yelp
New here, love the pastries. Service is fast and location is great. I can come back here next time I visit London.
google avatar

Yelp
Visited at Trafalgar square shop which was huge. Looking for some French goodies but " settled " for Danish pastries. I had mango mousse with surprise filling, blueberry tart and Chocolate mousse cake. I didn't like blueberry tart but their chocolate mousse cake was heavenly. Specially for chocoholics, it was to die for. Mango pastry was yummy too but again......chocoholics gravitate toward cocoa bean. Will definitely go back again.
google avatar

Meredith T.

Yelp
This is a great bakery. The coconut marshmallow fluff things are amazing, and so are the croissants. Their coffee is also extremely good, I would especially recommend the flat white. It was busy, but we were helped immediately and got our food and drinks very quickly. In addition to this, there is free WiFi. It is very clean and has a nice vibe. Would recommend.

Yelp
I am a sucker for these types of cafe/ coffee places. Something about them which says sophistication, fashion, and Nordic. I do think the Danish has got it right. Ole and Steen is themed cool dark sleek design, familiar with most norden style. Even the name itself is cool, there is nothing fluffy and happy go lucky about this place. Add to that, when you see people using this as a workspace, with their laptops, either on FB or Yelp (wink), then it should really tell you what kind of place this is. The food is amazing and fancy, no skimping on quality, and really interesting take on the usually classic danish pastries. Its not cheap, but for the quality I would say its about right. I do like the queuing/ ticket system they implemented. You walk in grab a ticket and wait to be called, it moves the lines, and removes misunderstanding, especially for a place like this where there is space and not everyone has a understanding of etiquette and manners. You wait for your number and wait to be called to the till.
google avatar

Stephania A.

Yelp
Amazing pastries and good service. This place is a great option for having breakfast or tea time. They have a strawberry and nut (walnut maybe) mini cake that is to die for.

Yelp
We have had Lagkagehuset (Ole and Steen's Danish name) pastries in Denmark and dream of them. We have jokingly calculated the cost of "pastry runs" to Denmark from Seattle. We haven't gotten back to Copenhagen, but find ourselves in London quite frequently. We were over-the-moon when Ole and Steen opened next to Planet Hollywood in Picadilly. It's amazing how many times in the last 2 weeks that I found myself stepping through the door. We had dinner with London friends just a few blocks away the first night we were there and took them to Ole and Steen for pastry afterwards. They were instantly addicted - so much so that when I went back for lunch the next day (the open faced roast beef sandwich is delicious), I found one of them there picking up food and they don't even live in London. He had made a special trip just to pick up food for his family. We brought a box of chocolate swirls (my fave) and a box of marshmallow puffs back on the plane with us. Didn't even care that they were in rough shape when we got home. There wasn't a crumb left the next day. Until next time.....

Yelp
Really nice spot for Breakfast. We simply opted for tea and toast they have a wide selection of sandwiches and pastries. It was relatively quiet at 10am but as we passed later around lunch but was packed.
google avatar

Nelle L.

Yelp
Everything looks good and tasted even better. The open face sandwich was a delight. We got the rare roast beef toast and was yummy.. Salmon on sesame bun was a surprise bite.. yet leaving me wanting more. Tried the rye bread with butter and cheese and sure enough very fresh crust and yet soft moist. The cinnamon bread was cinnamony enough. A little pricey but so worth it.. Wish i could try more items so i will definitely come back for more delightful bites..

Yelp
We had breakfast at the Victoria outlet in the new Nova complex. The tea selection is quite limited, but delicious pastries, porridge and (relatively healthy) hot dishes too. Good service by Scandinavian-looking staff. The décor is elegant, sober and clean. We saw a mouse running in the dining room. A waitress explained this was due to a door being left open for some construction work, and kindly offered some free drinks, but we declined.
google avatar

Mariam Nazdane A.

Yelp
The place looks fresh & new. When you go in you'd see that prices are also on the higher side but then they give you a wet tray without a liner ! That doesn't really match the rest of the scene ! Breakfast choices are also very limited.

Yelp
Well, I'm not a fan of sweet pastries and baked goods but wow!!!! Ole and Steen is a brand new Danish bakery from an established company with lots of shops under their belt in their native country. Their 1st location in London is minutes from Piccadilly Circus and features a mezzanine eating space overlooking a generous space filled with beautiful, rustic and yummy pastries which cry to be eaten. Now, I know what you're thinking, pastries always look good, but rarely live up to expectations. This is the place to prove you wrong. They have sweet and savoury, large and small, the basic Scandinavian treats like cinnamon buns and then things you've never seen before but you definitely wanna eat them! So, how do they taste? Flavoursome, sweet and absolutely delicious. Not expensive either, totally value for money and exceeded my expectations which is rare these days as not every bakery delivers. The marzipan seems to have 2 dimensions, the rum tastes strong, the chocolate mousse cake is umptuous and makes you want more. Staff are lovely, I visited at a quiet moment and got all the pastries explained to me so well that between that and their appearance, I wanted to buy everything. I settled on 7 items!!! I was told they have a separate breakfast offering before 11am and they try to keep a full range until near closing. What a great and beautiful place!!

Ritaj B.

Yelp
Racist worker behind the sandwich counter. Did not welcome us in. Had a snarky attitude. Ordered an eggs Benedict with which she replied by saying "I dont know what that is" in the most undermining tone I have heard in my life. After the snarky comment I just ordered what was displayed on the counter. I took a seat at a table only to see the table next to me had you guessed it, eggs benedict on avocado toast!! When i confronted the worker she kept insisting on saying she did not know what I meant by eggs benedict. Keep in my mind that ole and steen's instagram does mention eggs benedict. I confronted her and told her she could have just suggested any egg dishes instead of being rude and belittling. She decided to judge me based on my appearance because I was a hijabi. Guess ole and steen doesnt welcome arabs there.
google avatar

Liz B.

Yelp
Couldn't stomach going to Pret and stopped here instead - wonderful lunch spot - had sandwiches and salads, and a scone. Slightly pricey but food quality was excellent. Very sleek Scandinavian interior. Had to wait a bit to get a table. Water is available at no charge. The desserts looked beautiful- was too full to try!
google avatar

Caitlyn S.

Yelp
Everything here is delicious and all the employees are so sweet. What makes them stand out is that they have samples! Usually 3 different pastries to try and that's how they get you but who doesn't like samples? During my 4 months in the U.K., I came here at least 3-5 times a week and they never disappointed. Great atmosphere. A little routey, but it's expected with their great success. Their desserts are beautiful and delicious too! Things I got and loved: Spandeur, mini blueberry pie, avo toast, chocolate rye, mochas, lattes, goat cheese and artichoke wheel of bread (idk what it's called but you'll know what I'm talking about) Can't wait to come back when I visit London!
google avatar

Yelp
Great little spot and friendly staff. The pastries are amazing. Don't leave without one!

Yelp
Great place for a sandwich and a Danish. Popular, comfy cafe with good service and great food.

Yelp
Really nice bread with long queue! Anyone could try before going to the Phantom of the opera~

Sofia O.

Yelp
The pastries in the window caught my eye while I was walking through the area and ended up being a fantastic breakfast spot. I ordered a simple filter coffee and croissant combo and think this may be the best croissant I have had in London! Service was extremely quick and friendly. This is a great place for breakfasts, coffee dates, or casual meet ups. There are several sandwiches such as the avocado toast and shrimp toast that look both delicious and instagramable!
google avatar

Paul D.

Yelp
Everything we had was so good! We went on two separate occasions during our visit to London! The chocolate muffin and carrot muffin were standouts. The interior is well designed and support the cool ambience.

Nina C.

Yelp
Delicious! This was my first visit and each employee was friendly and helpful. It was easy to order as there was no wait at breakfast. Both food and drink were prepared quickly. Presentation was lovely and everything was delicious. Also, great location!
google avatar

Yelp
Cinnamon Social forever! My first time trying this. It's wonderful! I intentionally booked an Airbnb near an Ole and Steen location just so that I could go here. 4 of us finished the Cinnamon Social as dessert first night, breakfast next day. I wish I had one right now.
google avatar

Belle W.

Yelp
I was very satisfied with the taste of their cinnamon pastry. Even though it is located in the middle of Soho, the prices are reasonable. If you feel like something sweet but don't want to get ripped off in central London, go here. The pastries, service and the price will not despoint you.

Jonathan P.

Yelp
the cinnamon bun was basically just a cinnamon roll with filling inside. the filling was really good. this is so sweet though, a bit too sweet. buy one to try and split it with friends
