Most restaurants at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport close at 10pm, so this was one of a very few choices open slightly later after I landed. There was a decent number of customers seated, so I figured I'd give it a try.
As I perused the offerings, three different staff members greeted me and asked if I was ready to order, which I found surprisingly nice and much appreciated.
Initially, I was torn between the deep dish pizza slices and grilled sandwiches but for some reason chose the later. Looking at the display area, the sandwiches were premade and stacked tens upon tens; they looked plain & unappealing but I also didn't know how long the pizza had been sitting out so I figured my option would at least be freshly pressed.
I decided to order the grilled cheese with tomato because of the variety of cheeses included. The gentleman who took my order brought it to my table, completely encased in a foil sandwich wrap, and told me to be careful as the contents would be hot.
Much to my surprise, there was a good amount of cheese but the sandwich was barely warm and individual slices were still visible so...not "hot" at all as the sandwich wasn't grilled long enough for the cheese to fully melt. And it was as dry as the Arizona air. Never in my life have I had a grilled cheese prepared anywhere without butter!
Frankly, I'm fed up (pun intended) with mediocre airport food at outrageous prices and adamantly believe that merchants repeatedly get away with this because people are either tired, in a rush and/or desperately hungry. I've had much better food from 7-Eleven and at least fast food chains like McDonald's have predictable quality.
I'd rather go hungry for a few hours than waste my time and money here again.
