Does the Tipped Minimum Wage Violate Workers’ Civil Rights? | Eater

"A former bartender, Carisa Shade, says she was laid off during the March 2020 shutdowns, later asked to return while pregnant, denied medical leave in a letter, and then told she had been fired as she recovered from giving birth; Shade, with 20 years in the restaurant industry, views the firing as punishment for having a baby." - Greta Moran

I’m beyond thrilled that Olive Garden brought back the Steak Gorgonzola Alfredo! This dish has always been one of my favorites, and it did not disappoint. The steak was perfectly cooked, tender, and flavorful, while the creamy Alfredo sauce had just the right touch of Gorgonzola blue cheese to make every bite pure comfort food bliss. It’s the kind of dish that feels like a celebration in itself! My company chose Alfredo with added broccoli, and it was a fantastic addition. Fresh, vibrant, and perfectly cooked. To start, we couldn’t resist the classic salad and breadsticks, which were as delicious as ever, another pleasant surprise was the lasagna fritta appetizer. It was our first time trying it, and it was absolutely incredible, crispy on the outside, cheesy and savory on the inside. It’s definitely something we’ll be ordering again. Thank you, Olive Garden, not only for bringing back the Steak Gorgonzola Alfredo but also for delivering an all-around excellent dining experience. From the warm atmosphere to the consistently delicious food, every visit feels like coming home. I can’t wait to come back for more!!

Came in 15 minutes to closing feeling bad about asking if the kitchen was still open. I could see the kitchen staff cleaning up. Chef came out and asked what I wanted. I said whatever is easiest for you since it's so close to closing. She said, whatever you want. I went simple, fettuccine Alfredo with grilled chicken. Came out quick and fresh. Very grateful for that experience. Thanks much!

This particular day was regular business busy day. Sitting and waiting was expected. We were seated in the bar area. I sat and noticed two waiters and one of them was the bartender. Ordering drinks they had only alcoholic drinks and water(🌊hurricane). The waiter brought dishes out for the rolls and mine was dirty. He never came back with a new plate. I had to ask the other waitress for one. She was so friendly. The guests that came and ate their food, their dirty dishes sat there the ENTIRE time we were there. We asked for to-go containers and had to ask another waitress for them. There was no one picking up dirty dishes or clearing off the tables. But I noticed the many mangers and staff standing behind the check in counter. I’ve added photos of my disappointment. Hopefully this changes!

Always love the olive garden. But why not bring that salad out right away like y'all used to? And put some dressing in there! I had the tour, very filling and great as always!

Olive Garden 400 Airport Rd Arden NC 28704 This is one of our regular go-to places. 2025 Jan 30 My wife and I had a scrumptious dinner today at this Olive Garden. She ordered Shrimp Scampi. I had the Eggplant Parmesan. Must have been good since both of us cleaned our plates! Of course the bread sticks and salad are always delicious. Our meal was enhanced by Sophia F. She made sure our every need was met. Very friendly and attentive. Thank you Sophia 2024 Sep 23 My wife and I, plus our granddaughter had lunch at this Olive Garden today.

Struggling with the water shortage, it was like a picnic in the restaurant, paper plates, plastic glasses, plastic silverware. Food portions were almost half of usual. Spaghetti was overcooked and water soaked. Waiter, raced through you trying to order, and you could tell he had been taking a lot of shots from customers, disappointed with their experience. And we heard him patiently and kindly answering stupid questions, Just be warned it's not business as usual, (no graded Parmesan cheese) and probably not until December when the water is safe to use will things be as expected. You can see how they are trying to make things seem normal after a terrible disaster. The surrounding areas still don't have drinking water, all water has to be boiled to be used, drinking water is brought in. Thanks for trying to bring normal back to an area of chaos.

Well to start we were seated quickly and everything seemed fine. My wife , daughter and myself ordered our drinks my wife and I both ordered Italian rum punch and were brought 2 margaritas. (No biggie) My daughter ordered fried mozzarella which made it out before the return of our corrected drinks. When our waitress brought our drinks she dropped mine on the table right in front of me. Now I'm covered in Italian rum punch. So I go to the bathroom to get dried off and cleaned up as much as possible. While in there another customer says "man I was right in front of you and heard the crash and me and my wife just cringed" then he said him and his wife were just watching the show and that the manager was giving all the wait staff a really hard time. So I come back out and we were moved to a different table. I'm still soaked so my wife goes to the wait station to get some towels. I wasn't even upset I knew it was an accident. I told my wife I'll still tip the waitress because I know she's embarrassed and the guy in the bathroom said it was a rough night there anyway. Although I did expect a major compensation to our bill. After all I say there in discomfort sticky and wet so I couldn't enjoy my meal if I wanted. So then a manager comes over and stated that he heard what happened and was sorry gives me a $15 gift card. At this point I just want to leave. So I ask the waitress for assistance to apply the gift card to the bill which I'm still not happy with. $75 no adjustments but a $15 gift card to cover my drink. The waitress then took the gift card and applied it to gratuity. So I'm left with the entire bill. This experience was horrible. We visit many olive gardens but this visit has definitely made us already think we'll be looking for other options. I would have given a better tip than that. Big 👎👎👎 will not be visiting this location again.

Yelp
Stopped in at the Olive Garden on Airport Road in Arden and had a great experience! The service was super friendly and efficient -- we felt well taken care of from the start. My daughter had the Cheese Ravioli, which was rich, cheesy, and cooked just right. We also tried the new Calabrian Steak and Shrimp Bucatini -- wow. The steak was tender, the shrimp had great flavor, and the pasta had a spicy kick that brought it all together. Of course, the salad and breadsticks were as good as ever!

Yelp
Great food and the atmosphere in this place. Soup and salad is very good here. Thank you for the great service Olya.

Yelp
For the price and the quality you are probably better off going to someplace else. For the four of us to eat it was over 100 dollars before tip and one person just had the unlimited soup. The food just tasted almost "synthetic" if that makes sense. It was flavorless even though it was smothered in cheese and pepper. The chicken was rubbery and bland. Our server was funny and fantastic which was a saving grace. The restaurant was also clean and organized. I would not likely return.

Yelp
Some places like this get a lot of shade. I get it- we live in a city of local options and unique flavors. There is a place (in my mind) for your Olive Garden nights. If you fininho it wanting that, you leave happy. I left happy. We got salad and breadsticks to start. Heck yeah. Breadsticks a little salty but warm and fresh nonetheless. Good salad- a bit dressing heavy but to be expected. I got a wine. The smaller pour. It felt sufficient. Perfect for the meal. Honestly not sure if I would have wanted the large one. I got the house red blend and it was decent. I hate their cups tho. Just being picky. The linguine with shrimp was meant to be lighter. I think it was only cause I ate half but was very noodle heavy. Pretty good amount of shrimp though. And nice flavors. And lunch tomorrow. Woot woot. The pumpkin cheesecake was a delight. See? Seasonal here too. The caramel sauce on top was a bit too over the edge though. It was a bit liquid-y. And honestly it would have been better without the crust. But the slice was huge and great to split. Left happy.

Yelp
Matt our server yesterday at lunch was awesome! He handled our order and food delivery in a prompt manner. As he was with other tables, he frequently checked back in to see if we needed anything else. Very nice young man.

Yelp
Had a great evening! Mack was very nice and informative. Food came out quick and hot. Great experience. Thanks Mack!!

Yelp
I typically don't go to a ton of chain restaurants. But the unlimited soup, salad, and breadsticks for 7.99 is an incredibly hard deal to beat. This location is by far the best Olive Garden I've been to. The dining room has adequate seating and even has a party room... which is where we typically try to sit. The service is always quick and personable. Whether you're looking for a long sit down experience or a quick bite to eat - this Olive Garden location won't disappoint. Pro Tip: if it's your birthday let them know and you get a free dessert.

Yelp
Nice bartender that's for a glass of Chardonnay and it came out room temperature. He said yeah the manager makes us keep the refrigerator to 52° we left and went to Carrabba's

Yelp
Was honestly horrific. Went at about 100pm and it was empty. Yet had to wait to be seated. Toscana soup tasted and s.elled like old fish water. Seemed like they forgot the cream too. Lasagna had to have been from yesterday and heated up yet again. Bone dry and a tiny portion. Could never go back and that's a shame because of all the horrible chains, OG was at least always a solid go-to. Not anymore.

Yelp
I've always enjoyed the food at Olive Garden, my last trip was in Asheville were I had the soup and salad for lunch, great as always. My service was very good as well.

Yelp
They took us in 30 minutes before closing. They were very nice and the food was amazing. No one was rude or upset about us coming in late while traveling. So grateful for the help feeding my family!!!

Yelp
Always an economical and tasty place to eat. Cost efficient also. Very tasty sausage with my spaghetti and meatballs!

Yelp
The food was ok !!! I was charged an Alfredo sauce that was like 5 dollars and I only dip it twice in a piece of bread !!! I was not informed it was extra charged and the server place it far away from me where I had to get up and get it myself and we were a group of five and she put it on my tap without even asking , when I review the check she was gone and no where to be found !! Also when I got up I almost slip because my area was wet by the floor !!! , I spoke to the manager , he was kind he was gonna take it away from my check but it was already too late I had already paid !! And never saw the server again , just a bit upset still !!! Not the best experience at this place !!!

Yelp
Honest November 17 2023,I took my son n family to the asheville nc location,we ordered, I tiny bowl of noodles swimming in water and a thimble full of marina for sauce.i started looking around to see if I was being pranked on camera, not the case. I asked for a different type of pasta ,waitress kinda looked n acted like kathy bates from the movie misery sneered at me came back with another bowl of the same pasta and no sauce.my wife and sons salad was brown ,entrees undercooked and cold.breadsticks were hard as Chinese algebra, and zero refills on any drink. We were so disgusted that we decided to just pay n leave.kathy bates look alike waitress understood it was my son's birthday, brought him a piece of cake that resemble a snack cake with a teaspoon of coolwhip,my son wouldn't touch it.got my card out to pay for this low rent experience of a meal and when i paid with the table kiosk,i paid for everything on our ticket .when i checked the receipt as i left i was charged over 10 bucks for the cake,i left no tip, then our waitress rung up the bill as i had already paid for ,removed the 10 dollar price of the cake in front of me,and kept it as a tip.Nasty food, pitiful service and debt card theft took place all in about 40 min. I will never eat at any olive garden again .true story.Hell I'd rather been trapped on a snow cap mountain with the Donner party trying to decide if I'm gonna have to eat the horses first or just tuff it out.

Yelp
We ordered Togo- and I have to say it was better when we just ate there. Couple of issues with the food portions-- when all you're getting is a pasta dish it should be a lot of pasta! I mean how cheap is pasta?! Like $2.00 a bag?! This fettuccine also tasted over cooked to me. I ate the whole portion which I've never been able to do before! The salads were large - they didn't skimp there however they weren't all that fresh....better if you eat it there. Breadsticks were good but you only get two!! Hahah not even a basket? Why? You're still paying the same when you order TO-GO!! Anyways I'll have a hard time going back. For the cost I can go to a better restaurant with better service. And this location is ALWAYS PACKED!! I don't know why people are obsessed with Olive Garden here. You will always have to wait at dinner time--so they're definitely not hurting income wise!

Yelp
The zupa tuscana and house salad fills me up so quick especially with the delicious bread! But I love trying out their different kind of dishes! I loved the limited time masha potatoes and chicken! The sauce was so good! Also like how this restaurant is less crowded then the other Olive Garden in Asheville. And the workers are well dressed, and more friendly.

Ronald K.

Yelp
The service was mediocre. The food was ok, not prepared from scratch. The waiter apologized for slow service, offered free dessert, but did remember when we payed the check.

Yelp
Brittney was our waitress and she was amazing. Food was great and fast, absolutely no complaints.

Yelp
For frozen food this place is good. Nothing sets it apart. The staff is nice. It's clean. There are much better Italian places to eat and much worse. If you have lower standards for Italian food, go here. Otherwise, keep scrolling and find something made with love and care. This isn't it.

Yelp
After being here a month we finally had a good dinner. The Chicken Parm was fabulous as was the soup and salad. Our server, Abigail, was fantastic and made our dinner a step above the highest expectations. We'll be back!
google avatar

Bryan T.

Yelp
Not the restaurant's fault...they are so short handed, the wait time on a Thursday evening was 45 minutes.
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
We ordered by phone for pickup. Their process is fantastic and super easy. They provide a pickup time and bring the food out to a table immediately in front of designated tables to ensure minimum exposure to their employees and their customers. The order was correct, the portions large, and the salsa were separate from the entrees, so the salad was cold and crisp while the entrees were nice and hot.
google avatar

Joe L.

Yelp
Yes this is a chain but when you have a good meal it is still worth the time and effort to call them out. Was craving some Italian food and didn't feel like searching so I went with a known commodity. Sat at the bar and was taken care of by "C" and she was exceptional. Went with the create your own pasta dish and the Cavatappi & Meatballs was good and satisfying. The place is very well kept and clean and the service provided by "C" was great.

Yelp
Some of the best service I've ever had but the worst food ever. Someone in the kitchen decided to make my soup extremely too hot and I found 2 black hairs in my spaghetti. i would believe woman's hair since it was long, straight and thin. I stepped up to the boy working in the front who was seating people to mention the excellent service but could easily tell he had an attitude so i knew there was no use in bringing the soup or spaghetti to his attention. I found this Olive Garden to be less than professional. Sooner or later someone will sue them. It should have been me. Their food gave me a slight case of diarrhea. I hope whoever prepared my food had a good laugh because it is easy to tell they are of small mind and incapable of a real job along with the boy working the front. I hope this helps someone else to be aware and fire the person in the kitchen along with a stern conversation with the boy who was doing the seating. Very bad business!!

Yelp
Went for an early dinner last night and was extremely pleased with the service, reasonable prices and great food. Four out of the five of us had the Fettuccine Alfredo, some with chicken, some without. All outstanding. Definitely recommend.

Candee B.

Yelp
I had lunch with a friend at the Olive Garden on Airport Rd in Arden last Wednesday. They are taking no precautions whatsoever to try to keep their customers safe from COVID other than requiring their staff to wear masks. We were not allowed to sit at tables in the bar area or in a large side room. The only seating was in the main section that mostly consisted of booths. There was no plexiglass between booths and no staggering of seating people in booths. The aisle separating the booths is about 4 feet. The restaurant was full, with a waiting line. If small restaurants can make accommodations to help prevent the spread of COVID, certainly a national chain restaurant can. Just opening the other rooms and allowing people to spread out a bit would help. They probably don't want to have to clean "extra" areas. I won't be going back. I don't appreciate their attitude.
google avatar

Jen C.

Yelp
I've had lunch at this location a couple times and it's always fast a tasty. This time I was a bit apprehensive since I'm doing the low/no carb thing and I couldn't imagine there would be much I could eat. Surprised to learn they will serve ANY of their sauces over broccoli. My chicken alfredo over broccoli was delicious!!! So grateful they worked with me. Steven our waitor was a saint to be so understanding and helpful. We will return.

Yelp
You really never know what your going to get when you go to Olive Garden but this location is top notch. We were seated quickly even though the waiting room was full when we walked in. Waitstaff and hosts were very friendly. We had a gift card so decided to splurge on some cocktails. LIT was on point and they have decent $5 cocktails like jack and coke. I love Olive Garden because you get SO MUCH FOOD! Our waiter convinced us to order dessert to go for a late night snack. I'm 28 and have never even considered that as a possibility. My life is changed forever.

Ethan B.

Yelp
Awful service, nasty food will never go back, waited an hour in line just for me and my spouse to have it revoked because it was too long. also the Spaghetti taste like it came from the can.

I P.

Yelp
This wasn't my first time coming to this Olive Garden, and it's usually very good. When I ate there this time we had a very negative experience with whom I assume was the manager. When I first came in the hostess told me the wait time, and I couldn't tell if she said 15 or 50 minutes, so I replied with "you mean FIFTEEN, correct?" And she said yes. She also asked for my name and number. Nevertheless, I waited for one hour and received no text. Keep in mind, I was sitting in the seating area right next to the hostesses table and had made eye contact with the hostesses several times to make sure they hadn't forgotten about my party. Not only was I upset about the wait, I had seen several parties that got there after mine get seated first! Eventually, one of the hostesses noticed we had been there for a while, and it looked like she was talking to whom I believe was the manager (older male). When he spoke to us, he was extremely rude and never apologized for the inconvenience. It is not my fault that the hostess entered my number in wrong, nor decided not to call my name when I was sitting right there. Additionally, it is not my fault that I was not told the correct wait time. What made me especially upset about the interaction with this man, is that I felt I was being talked down to because I am a younger female.

Yelp
It's a beautiful place to eat really nice wine menu . The food is honestly no Better than other Italian restaurant but honestly who cares? A nice place for a date or a weekend kind of thing? The staff really try to make a point to be higher grade , ( so cut off some slack and leave a decent tip) .

Bob J.

Yelp
We called for a reservation on Jan 5th and were told they do not take reservations but I could go to their website and get on a wait list! They said being on a wait list would get me seated when I arrived. I was on the phone with them and they couldn't do anything and directed me to their system on the web. I guess talking to someone is not good enough at Olive Garden as they rely on computers to do the job. Well, I did what they asked, joined the wait list online and went to the restaurant. I was met with a crowd of 30+ people trying to get a table when we were told their all in ok wing computer system was down! They weren't seating anyone as they couldn't place an order, collect a bill without the computer system being up. So much for Olive Garden's foray into an automated automaton and to be hostage to their own poorly designed creation. Some day, Olive Garden will realize that talking and having a backup plan when your systems don't work. This experience has certainly soured me to Olive Gardens home grown nightmare! Remember, this is the chain that wanted to stop unlimited bread sticks! They don't get it it my business.

Gilberto C.

Yelp
The second time within a month that our order to go was incomplete, missing two salads that we paid for. Don't trust them. From now on my tip is going to bo 0:00
google avatar

Jonathan B.

Yelp
Sindy was an amazing server! She was extremely efficient, and had genuine work ethic. I was very impressed for a chain restaurant.

Kristina R.

Yelp
Only operating at about 1/4 capacity. Which would be fine if it's due to not having staff. However, there were a minimum of six employees standing at the front desk while dirty tables needed cleaned and people continued to leave instead of waiting for an hour wait. Food was good like always - just very frustrating seeing two completely empty dining rooms and half a dozen employees just meandering about.
google avatar

Devin G.

Yelp
Service was actually pretty good, and the soup was better than I remembered it... but the food was bland, and it's hard to justify going to a place like this when you have so many other local options (looking at you Chiesa or Vinnie's)... A little pricey too for what you get.

Yelp
Danette is the waitress here at this olive garden and was rude. Not nice didnt offer any wine at the beginning of service to sample. Asked us if we were ready to order and she just gave us the menu. Less than 2 mins came back and asked again and then again 2 mins. Then when were ready we asked if they had sonething that we saw advertised on tv and she said yes on the menu we told her we didnt see it she said let me see oh i dont see it either let me go asj then came back to tell us. We ordered she brings the salad to the table and my plate was dinner and she acted like it was a sin to bring me a clean plate and when she did she threw itbpn the table. She asked us if we wanted some cheese on tge salad and we said yes please and we got a little bit, after that you can tell ypu were just not gonna enjoy your meal. The service manager Abraham brought us are foid and was very polite.i told him he said he would go talk to her. I told him i woyld just appreciate her not coming back to the table. Well that must not of worked because she has come back several times and this is making me not enjoy my food . I GAVE THIS ONE STAR FOR THE MANAGER. NO STARS FIR THE WAITRESS. Was not even asked if would like desert. I am telling you she is just not a good waitress. Oh my she came to table to bring the receipt and she must have went outside to smoke a cigarette and came back in a pour a bottle of perfume on her it was so strong someone like me with asthma and allergies it was killing me. Prices are fine . Just the service was terrible. Would i recommend this olive garden to others maybe.

Yelp
Salmon was hammered (overcooked), asparagus were thrown on the grill with no seasoning, and with the white ends still on. Definitely not worth $16.99. My son's Alfredo looked like paste. The salad was good, and our server was great.
google avatar

Jerry D.

Yelp
Food is always consistent and orders are taken very prompt. Best part is the never ending pasta bowls. Staff is very friendly.

Jonathan R.

Yelp
Several trips here have been very disappointing. The best thing about this location are the nice staff. The food has not been very good. Have learned that they save soups (in plastic bags) from the night before and serve them re-heated the next day. Salads have indications that either the bowls are not properly cleaned (from time to time or day to day) as evidenced by lettuce that is very wilted and smells bad/rotten. Staff readily admit to these procedures happening at this location. Pasta is overly cooked or under-cooked depending on who is doing it. Vegetables are also either raw or over-cooked. There is another location on Tunnel Road which is much better and better run. It is only 15 minutes away and worth the effort

Yelp
Excellent! From the moment we went in to the time we left, the service, food, everything was excellent! Our server, Ken, came to us promptly and took our drink orders as we waited for our children to come join us. He was friendly, made suggestions, but wasn't overbearing with our table. He accommodated and made suggestions to some of the vegetarians at the table. He discussed sports with my son-in-law and kept things light and friendly. That is what service is all about! The food was wonderful. My husband got the Mostcato Peach Chicken. Very good! The fruit tastes didn't overbear the pasta. The dish was large and he took half of it home. 3 of us ordered from the Buy-One-Take-One menu. All of us were very full from the Bread Sticks with Alfredo Sauce, Soup and Salad. Ken suggested to my son-in-law their seasonal Potato and Mushroom Soup that was delicious. When my daughter caught that he hadn't offered the wine sample, Ken jumped on it right away and gave us some information about some wines they have. Overall, the visit was great and gave us a relaxed time to spend with each other. We will definitely go back again!

Yelp
My meal was delicious but my service sitting at the bar for lunch time was horrible . I normal leave very large tips but today I decided to leave nothing due to the bartenders rude comments. About the guess and her poor service

Yelp
Fairly good food, quick friendly service even though they were very busy we were seated right away. Our drink orders were taken quickly & the service was great. Food was what you would expect from a chain it was fine. Great desert for sure though.

Larry C.

Yelp
This place is a hit or miss and lately it has been a miss. Salad is mostly ends of the head and tastes bitter. They are skimpy with the sauce and most of the pasta is dry. And the bread sticks are so salty they cause your blood pressure to go up even if you don't have high bp. Our salad was no sooner set down and then the main course was brought out. I think the one on tunnel road does a better job.

Tom H.

Yelp
This place has the worst Italian food that I have ever had, no flavor, poor toppings, food was serviced just after receiving the salad, was like a race to get us out of the restaurant; salad had very little dressing, bread was cold. Will never return to this chain

Debra K.

Yelp
Ordered a salad with some grilled chicken to go. Paid $11. When I got to a place to eat, there were no breadsticks the chicken portion was very small and the tomatoes were very mushy. And where did they find almost all white lettuce?

Jerry L.

Yelp
Food was okay for Olive Garden but our waiter, Hunter, was a clueless idiot. Asked twice what we were having. Wrote it down and then came back 5 minutes later to ask. He then brought us the wrong bill and could not get it right. The manager had to fix it as waiter gave us the wrong bill twice. You would have thought they would have said something, apologized or comped part of our meal. Nothing.

Fred B.

Yelp
Upon arriving at this restaurant my girlfriend who has asthma and I were greeted by the doorman who asked us to wear masks until seated. There was a diesel truck sitting at the entrance idling, reason unknown. The fumes from the truck were making her ill, and even though we told the doorman she had asthma and the fumes were affecting her, he still had us wait in the fumes outside. After a few minutes he allowed us to stand inside away from the fumes. By this time I'm mad that he would not let her in. His whole demeanor was nonchalant to what she was going through. He was more concerned that we wear masks before we were seated. Once we entered the restaurant and sat down I was fuming, so much so that I lost my appetite. The waiter Vince who was awesome arrived promptly and got our drink and my girlfriend's order. While waiting I ran my finger down the wood next to where we were sitting, and I should have taken a picture of the amount of dust on my finger just swiping 18 inches, disgusting to say the least. I'm not sure if the doorman was the manager or not because another man had taken his post before we left. On a positive note the waiter Vince and my girlfriend's food was great. The doorman needs to worry about the cleanliness of the restaurant and quit focusing on whether people had on masks while walking to their table in which they are allowed to take off the masks to order and eat, really disturbed by the doorman's handling of everything. If he was the manager on duty, he needs to be the dishwasher.

Always friendly and helpful staff! I've had amazing services with a table, the bar and to go. Appreciate the staff being so efficient and thorough while also being so friendly! Food is always consistent and delicious.
