"Only in London would you have your fish and chips delivered. This clean, friendly and upscale locale makes an excellent fish & chips combo that proves you don't have to look and feel like you just came out of a nightclub to indulge in the national dish. There's a second location in Whetstone. "

Authentic fish and chips. The service was lovely. I would only say the seating could be improved. Inside it’s quite stuffy because of the small space, we sat outdoors, however the seating area could be more improved

We were greeted by a smiling young lady who invited us to sit where we liked for dining in and went for the cod and chips. The cod was very fresh, lightly but fully battered served with hand cut fresh chips and sauces and tasted wonderful. Not sure why there are these negative reviews as remember only one usually small detail may be amiss and a low rating is given but the food was of excellent standard and so was the service. Our order was taken promptly and we were left to eat at our leisure until we finished - clean plates all round. I'd definitely recommend and dine again here!

Came here on Saturday and really enjoyed ourselves. The staff were friendly and helpful, the shop was nicely decorated, and they served some of the nicest fish and chips I’ve ever had. I also enjoyed tasting a deep-fried mars bar, which I’d never seen in person before! The place is obviously more upmarket than a traditional chippy so the prices reflect that, but I’d say the value for money is still excellent.

My favourite fish and chips in the whole of London! We happily travel an hour from home to reach here, it is 100% worth it. The food is always cooked fresh to order, and the homemade tartar sauce is beautiful. To be honest we always order the battered fish and chips, but the menu is very inclusive; there are grilled fish options, gluten free options, and a lovely range of starters and salads. It's not just your average menu at all. The staff are friendly and polite. If I had to have any complaint, it would be that my stomach isn't bigger!!! The portions are very reasonable, so if you have a good appetite you won't leave hungry. Great dessert selection too.

I visit a lot of fish and chip restaurants. Some good. Some not good at all. What also is essential is the oil they use and how regularly they change the oil. Mist people don’t know that seed oils are literally the number one thing you can put in your body. I’m not going to focus on the health side of my review but quality, taste and service. I visited with a group of friends and was t that impressed. We ordered chips, onion rings, battered cod and the grilled sea bass. Onion rings and batter Ed fish was okay and nothing special. Onions would be better if cut wider The grilled sea as was a fillet and was tasteless. I’ve had grilled sea bass in other places and it would be the entire fish with skin and cooked to perfection. Like it’s been barbecued Service was not great Atmosphere not great either. Won’t go into detail here Overall I felt other fish places superior. The oil they use is grape seed. Not great either. Very oily food and was burping afterwards

The food was absolutely delicious and sooooo fresh. The cod bites and chips were crunchy and the fish so tender and flaky. Will be going back soon to try the deep fried mars bar as well!

We had a haddock and a portion of chips to share and an Israeli salad. The fish was good but the chips could have been better. The salad was nice. The staff was friendly and welcoming.

Ordered via Deliveroo (we’re about an 8 mins drive). The cod was bland and at £13.95 we were expecting chips - but no - just a smallish piece of fish. £4.95 for a large chips felt reasonable and they were delicious. The mushy peas were great too. Overall the meal was saved by the sides, but as a fish and chip shop you’d hope the fish would be the hero…

Yelp
First of all they forgot the battered sausage after clearly calling it out only for me to find out it wasn't in there half way home. Also as soon as the sausage came from the packaging, the whole batter just crumbled to pieces completely.

Yelp
The worst fish & chips we've ever had. We got ripped off by this place. We ordered for pickup and when we got home the chips were undercooked, soggy, some tasted outright raw. The fish was bland and tasteless with too much batter. It was like eating cardboard. We had to pour salt on it to make it taste like something. We ended up tossing all the chips and could only eat some of the fish. Oh, yeah, but at least it was super-expensive!!! We spent £28 for two people! Absolutely ludicrous. Beware and avoid this place! It's a rip off with no recourse. There is no consistency in quality judging by all the 1 star reviews.

Yelp
WORST fish & chips I have ever had. Expensive. Chips were so undercooked they were almost raw. Fish was edible but tasteless. Batter was soggy. I've had much better in a small beachside chippy hole in the wall.

Yelp
This is for the Barnet branch.... THE MOOD A great location and although there is only a limited internal seating area of around two settings there is also some external seating as well. It maybe small but really nicely done with blankets provided and good place settings. This is like an upmarket fish and chips shop making this a really comfortable and nice place to be. But still has a local feel. Friendly staff and the food is well presented when it arrives. THE FOOD A good selection on the menu and some different items making this a great place to eat in or take away. As it was our first visit we stuck to standard items to really test this: Battered Cod and Chips - A classic item and well presented with salad and a nice dressing with chips and sides all served separate which is a nice touch so easy to share. Cod Bites and Chips - Great idea and filling, good if you like good mix of fish and better also chips and sides served separate but with salad on main dish served with a nice dressing. Well cooked with a crispy but not oily batter. All cooked fresh and you can tell. Mushy peas - This was a little disappointing and fresh garden peas just don't work it was too bitter and texture also little rough and a little crunchy. I think you just can't go wrong with tradition here so this item needs some tweaking. Curry Sauce - A nice flavour and not too strong to over power fish so worked really well and you can tell this is home made. Gherkin - We never did get this so cant comment what happened so hopefully will be able to comment on our next visit. Oh we were supposed to have the fried mars bar and we forgot....!!! THE VERDICT A great little friendly place and good for a family visit with good selection of food with great taste and helpful and friendly staff. I will be adding this to one of my favourite fish and chips places. I would say the price is reasonable and the best option to be would be to get the 4 cod bites with chips as very reasonable as it comes with the chips and i would say 4 bites equals a small cod with 7 being a large cod. Plenty of kids options available as well.

Yelp
Popped into Oliver's for a quick dinner after an exhausting 10 hour flight from California. I wanted something quick, cheap-ish, and tasty. Oliver's delivered on all fronts! I ordered a cod filet with chips. It was delicious. Everything was fried on the spot and the fish tasted super fresh and was moist without making the batter soggy. The chips could have been a tad warmer, but they were nice and thick. I got takeaway and they really piled in the chips. The cod filet was a good hearty portion. It was definitely enough to fill me up. If prices had been a bit cheaper and my chips were warmer, I would've given Oliver's a solid five stars. I will say that it was probably the best fish & chips I had while in London.

Yelp
We made a long trek to Oliver's since my daughter found it to offer "Gluten Free Fish and Chips" and was adamant about me having some since I had told her I was sad I couldn't eat Fish and Chips while there. I usually steer clear from Fish (am Vegetarian but will make rare exceptions for fish) but figured that "while in Rome".. you know, "Rome" being London and all. We sat down and started perusing the menu. I found so many delicious looking items I was actually quite excited, there sides included so many options for someone who doesn't eat meat and can't have gluten. When our server came we asked about the Gluten Free and she said that it was only on Wednesdays. It wasn't Wednesday, and we were leaving soon. No worries though, that menu proved I wasn't going to leave disappointed. I did try the Salmon it came with a side salad, and l'il 'ol me thinking it was going to be a tiny white lettuce boring salad ordered another side of grilled veggies. Let me tell you that the portions were not small and that salad was fresh, colorful and the dressing fantastic. It would have been more than enough food for one person. As I dug in, the food was just delicious, all of it and even though I had more food than I could eat, I still stole my daughter's mushy peas (she was full and wasn't going to finish them). It definitely wasn't on the cheaper side, but for us the meal was worth every penny.

Yelp
As my other half is a coeliac, anywhere that does acting gluten free suddenly becomes his favourite place. Oliver's on a Wednesday night is just one of those places. Not only do they do all their battered fish and chips with gluten free batter (on request) on a Wednesday night, but they still cater for those of use able to eat the good stuff; for us, this is a godsend. We usually get takeaway / delivery and always forget to share a portion of chips between us. A word of caution though: their online ordering never seems to work, and their phone lines spend a long time being engaged. It's not the best fish and chips in our local area, but the fact they do gluten free means we can't afford to be too lucky!!
google avatar

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
Starting in spring 2012, Oliver's now does GF fish & chips every Wednesday, due to popular response. The batter could be more flavorful (perhaps using a gluten-free beer and some spices) but the texture is nice and crispy, and beggars shouldn't be choosers, I suppose. Great selection of sides and they offer the lovely Magner's pear cider.

Yelp
Really top fish and chips, not cheap but well worth it. For take away you have to wait 8 minutes for most things as outside peak times they only make to order to ensure quality of the food is perfect as it has not sitting around Great to see a really well thought out restaurant with original quality

Yelp
So glad that my local chippie is not sketch. I don't really care for the fish but the sides (chips) are pretty good. Although watch out as they tend to slap on the salt and vinegar! It's a cute set up as well, reminiscent of the dining/kitchen rome of a summer holiday home. Not somewhere I would frequent regularly but a nice stop once and a blue moon

Yelp
They have a stand at one of the food markets in Camden. While I walked around the entire place, feeling like it was a United Nations food bazaar, I kept coming back to Oliver's. Fortunately I was with someone else who was opening to sharing. The fish and chips in the cone were fantastic. I mean, the batter was great, not overly oily, the fish was nice, and the chips perfect. This was the best fish and chips I've ever had. And it was served in a super convenient cone! How novel. (I don't even remember what the other meal ordered was because Oliver's stole the show)

Yelp
Cute little place near my friends house. Small seating space but didn't have to wait really during the dinner rush. They had run out of these fish cakes that friend and I both wanted, but waiter was nice and tried to persuade me to try something nicer, albeit more expensive, still. And because it's fancy chip shop you can get grilled fish pieces if you're feeling guilty for all those delicious chips. A little expensive for the fair but nice every once in a while.

Yelp
Friendly staff and quick service, I normally go one tube further to Belsize Park and phone my order in when I come out if the station. A short walk down the hill and it's ready to pick up before walking home and sitting down to dinner. The fish is FRESH don't think I've had fresher from a fish and chip shop. The chips are good too, there's no fish sitting around except possibly for their cod bites (a good deal, off cuts of cod fried up and sold with chips at a lower price). I normally go for the plaice though as I grew up eating it. Possibly a bit more than a chippie but I do prefer paying a little more for the quality and service. They sell takeaway in cardboard boxes with a foiled grease proof layer. Better than the wax paper they used to use. I've only eaten in once and it was a good experience but a while ago.

Yelp
Not changing my rating, but I did go back last night with a small group and the service was a lot better. I tried the matzah meal batter, two of us had the regular batter, and one person ordered the grilled yellowfin tuna steak, rare. We shared the dipping trio, chips, coleslaw, and mushy peas. The matzah meal isnt something I'd order again as it was denser than I'd like but, to be fair, I think it was as good as you could get from matzah meal! I just missed the airiness of the regular batter The tuna, again, was ordered rare and served medium. There was a hint of pink if you looked at it from the right angle. Unfortunately with something like tuna, anything above rare really ruins the quality of the fish and dries it out. The coleslaw, mushy peas, and dipping trip were excellent (the babaganoush was clearly homemade, extra garlicky, and delicious). Chips again were not crispy. I think maybe they single fry them? Overall, very good, but the chips and overcooking of the tuna steak is disappointing.

Yelp
Popped in this evening for a Sunday fix of fish and chips. The shop is quite small but there was adequate space for us to sit and the place seemed. Busy with a steady footfall of take away orders and people sitting in. Service was very standard nothing more than taking the order and bringing the food. The shop itself is clean and tidy with a kind of traditional feeling about it. we both went for fish and chips, I opted for haddoock while my wife went for cod. We both had a portion of chips and I went for a gerkin, gotta get those greens!! My haddock was pretty good and the batter was crispy. The cod however was a little undercooked. The chips were very standard in my opinion, not particularly chunky and with no crunch. They atlesst didn't taste oily though (as many shops tend to) the fish came with tartar sauce which I thought was a little tasteless. If I was charged what I felt this meal was worth, I'd have left happy and possibly gone back. As the final bill came to £34 (we had a soft drink each) I felt a little disheartened. I get the modern take on traditional foods and a nice venue but if your going to charge almost 2 x the price, you really need to be doing a bit more to justify the price.

Yelp
Food didn't really do it for me, but the owners and staff were all so friendly and helpful that I'd go back. I think I'm a bad person to judge British style fish and chips, as I want it to be something it's not. My guess is if you grew up eating this type of food you'll think Oliver's is a mighty fine 'chippy'. I found the fish to be way to big, which causes a lot of moisture (water) to build up inside the fried batter. This causes it to get soggy quickly. Chips also aren't my thing in general- give me a good french fry instead. I'm going to return though and try again one day, as it's near my house and the staff are nice.

Yelp
Oliver's is famed for its healthy fish and chips, with portions cooked in rapeseed oil coming in at 500 calories. I cant say that it is the best fish and chips in London as a lot of people say but it is definitely one of the best out there. It is a bit more pricey than a normal fish and chips shop but the quality of the fish justifies it. I would suggest phoning in and making a reservation for the tables located next to the window before visiting as the rest of the shop is a bit uninspiring.

Yelp
Yum! Such fresh fish and at such a decent price. Cons (starting with these as there aren't many): Can be crowded and quite warm inside. No heaters for outside tables. Limited wine list (but suitable for the venue). Mushy peas can be bland and the portions are a bit skint. Pros: Friendly service. Fresh fish and great salads. Beer and desserts also very reasonably priced -- £1.50 for a deep fried Mars bar takeaway. Everything else is plus. The open kitchen proclaims: "Look at how clean I am. I have nothing to hide!" Always a comfort with a fish & chippie. (With others, you may like the taste but be forced to stick your head in the sand on hygiene to keep going back. Not so with Olivers.)

Yelp
Delicious fish and chips from a relatively up-market chippie. Looks like a nice place to sit down and have a meal if you've got the time but I was on the run so I got haddock and chips to take away. Even though I walked through the cold rain for about ten minutes with it, both the fish and the chips were still warm and delicious when I got home. Bit heavy on the salt, but otherwise nice crisp batter and chips that weren't too soggy (this seems to be a perennial problem with me). I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Richard W.

Yelp
The ideal local fish and chip shop. I have the cod in matzo meal, and although it's not something you'll want to have too often, it's the perfect place when only fish and chips will do.

Yelp
Best Fish'n'Chips!! We each had a piece of haddock battered & shared a small fries. Our kids had the cod bites with chips and they inhaled it. We also tried the mashed potatoes and fresh peas. Our local friends told us this is the best place in the area and we definitely agree!! You won't be disappointed. (We are Visitors from Vancouver BC Canada)

Liz C.

Yelp
Warning. I ordered cod pieces, chips and coleslaw to take-away. I started eating one of the cod pieces and it had a disgusting foul taste. It was rotten and I had to spit it out. The chips were dry, and the coleslaw was weird, tasteless and very dry. I checked the food hygiene rating of the place and it is 3 out of 5. I don't know whether they keep fish too long or at inconsistent temperatures, or whether there was a problem with their supplier. In any event, rotten fish can kill people and I will never eat here again.

Yelp
I had my annual fish and chips 8 Feb 14. The fish was fresh, properly fried and nice, as the the people working there. The tartar sauce is lovely.

Yelp
FIsh and Chips..the mecca of british food. This has been my mantra for years. Here's the rub...I'm now gluten intolerant and well, Oliver's was going to be the end-all for me. I ordered up the fish and chips and behold...They either didn't clean their kitchen thoroughly the night before, or? but my order DID contain gluten. I was sick for the next 24 hrs...distended stomach, aches, indigestion, fatigue...the whole nine yards. Moral of the story-- eat only prepared foods that are gluten free naturally. Fish and CHips are NOT meant to be gluten free and neither is cake etc...you get my drift. I now only order grilled fish and NO chips, despite the claims of GF.

Yelp
Really nice and crisp matzo haddock last night - maybe a tad underseasoned but easily rectified with a couple of shakes of salt. Chips were good as well, though a few were undercooked - the crisp, smaller chips that were cooked for longer were amazing. Surprised to see how packed it got - we wandered in around 7.30pm and there were two other tables, and when we left the whole place was rammed and there were people queueing for tables. At least that kind of business means that the fish doesn't sit around for long - tastes fresh to me!
google avatar

Yelp
When you're paying this much for chips you'd expect something better. Really poor. Fish is ok but has frequently been dry. Shame as its my local.

Qype User (iSmit…)

Yelp
AWFUL & EXPENSIVE!!! First time I went in there, I paitently waited for the girl to acknowledge I existed (she seemed pre-occupied stacking the chip boxes), only for her to then ask a person back in the queue what they wanted. What an insult, so I left. Tried again a few days later, and this time she wasn't around and got served... Now, I knew they would not be cheap, given the location, but I thought I'd give them a try, as they are now the closest chip shop to me. Well, firstly I was disappointed that the chips were put into a garlic bread sized boxes - so less chips than I'm used to (plus it makes me wonder how much I'm paying for the packaging). Took them back and got tucked in - stodgy, dry and tasteless. My only guess, based on similar experiences, was that they had been double fried (ie; they must have been around a while cooling, and they decided to 'heat them up again' via the frier). I couldn't finish them they were that bad! For the amount they charge its was a real disappointment, and I will not be going back. There are plenty of alternatives nearby, and I get more satisfaction for half the price.

Susan S.

Yelp
Took my staff to Olivers to celebrate us hitting targets. They went to so much trouble for us. They even blew up and covered the room in balloons as I'd told them it was a celebration. We had the entire downstairs to ourselves. It is a GREAT location for a small party or business party. (there are 13 of us) The food was all brought together. All our meals were fantastic. I had tuna sensation... and it was yummy. The sticky toffee pudding was also really good, and the deep fried Mars bars were really naughty but so delicious. I did need to nip upstairs to ask for more drinks, but besides that it was first class and reasonably priced. Very reasonable for the area. I hope to take my girls again...maybe next Christmas.

Qype User (shelle…)

Yelp
Nice atmosphere and helpful service, but really disappointing meal; the fish seemed tired, the smell of re-used cooking oil is overwhelming and the mushy peas were terrible. Will not be going back again,

Sonji M.

Yelp
I went to Oliver's after anticipating enjoying some Fish and Chips because I am now very sensitive to gluten. It is a very small restaurant/takeaway and it was very busy so we had a little wait. The staff were friendly but very busy so no time to be attentive although they reassured me I would be in safe hands as it was a Wednesday so they were well prepared to serve gluten free. The food came and the portions weren't really impressive for the price, I found the food to be tasteless even the chips! The batter was tough not sure if they use any beer in the batter. My son who isn't gluten free wasn't impressed with his meal either. And the at the end the bill was more than I would have paid for that meal. Not saying I wouldn't go there again but not in a hurry.

Charles G.

Yelp
My friend and I went here on the midweek lunch offer where you get a starter or pudding plus main for £9.95. I had the house salad which was okay though the dressing was rather tart. My friend had garlic mushrooms which were not bad though not garlicky enough. His grilled plaice main was inexplicably soggy. The batter on my haddock was a weird colour and the fish was not that tasty. Adequate portions. Service excellent but I think this chain of fish and chip shops is going down the tubes just like Harry Ramsdens did. If you like your fish and chips you're much better off going to Benny's in Clapham.

Jacqui k.

Yelp
always a lack of attention to detail whether take away or in house. The staff tend to be inexperienced and a tad dim. Cutlery usually appears some time after the food is served and the condiments not at all.

Qype User (Jess14…)

Yelp
Expensive but you get a huge portion. much better than we expected. the Tuna steak was huge and the salad was fresh. The mushy peas were not proper mushy peas but they still went down well. Tuna was cooked through which was not ideal as we asked for 'medium'. they took the skin off the haddock as requested which was good. Will def be going back.

Paul I.

Yelp
Very good fish, ok chips, nice eating area. Is quite expensive. More like dining at a medium price restaurant than you average fish & chips place but we still like to go quite often.
