17 Best Hotels in Venice

"Once you’ve located the door to this six-room boutique hotel near the Frari basilica (no easy feat), you’ll be amazed what lies beyond. Oltre il Giardino looks more like a country villa than a city hostelry, and the windows and doors opening onto the lovely patch of exuberant greenery provide a great contrast with oh-so-urban Venice outside. There are six options in the main house: doubles, junior suites, and suites. Colors in these stylish, pared-back rooms are neutral, with the occasional splash of something startling. The villa that houses the hotel was the home of Alma Mahler, widow of the composer Gustav Mahler, in the 1920s. Lounge in the garden between sightseeing stints, and you'll soon realize why Oltre il Giardino is so handy. This isn’t a hotel-heavy area, but there are restaurants and bars aplenty, and both the train station and the main sights are also within reach." - Anne Hanley

Oltre il Giardino – Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? Once you’ve located the door to this six-room boutique hotel near the Frari basilica (no easy feat), you’ll be amazed what lies beyond. Oltre il Giardino looks more like a country villa than a city hostelry, and the windows and doors opening onto the lovely patch of exuberant greenery provide a great contrast with oh-so-urban Venice outside. What's the backstory? Oltre il Giardino is independently owned and managed by Lorenzo Muner. The villa that houses the hotel was the home of Alma Mahler, widow of the composer Gustav Mahler, in the 1920s. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? There are six options in the main house: doubles, junior suites, and suites. Colors in these stylish, pared-back rooms are neutral, with the occasional splash of something startling. Large windows—especially those overlooking the garden—make the rooms unusually light. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? There's good, free wi-fi. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? Sitting in the high-walled garden on a warm morning with some good coffee and fresh pastries is a particular Oltre il Giardino pleasure. Breakfast is good but simple: There’s nothing cooked. And the service? The welcome begins even before your arrival with good pre-visit communications, and continues smoothly once you arrive. Lorenzo and his friendly staff dole out faultless restaurant recommendations, and they’re always keen to help with bookings. What type of travelers will you find here? Oltre il Giardino’s Mahler connection, plus its garden, appeals to a more mature, artsy crowd—but the place is family-friendly, too. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? Lounge in the garden between sightseeing stints, and you'll soon realize why Oltre il Giardino is so handy. This isn’t a hotel-heavy area, but there are restaurants and bars aplenty, and both the train station and the main sights are also within reach. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? For the garden, the peace, and the friendly staff, Oltre il Giardino is a great choice." - Anne Hanley

Oltre Il Giardino, San Polo, Venice - Explore & Book

"If you’ve ever wondered what it's like to stay in a country villa in the middle of Venice, then this is your place. Oltre Il Giardino (‘beyond the garden’) is a bucolic villa owned and run by Lorenzo and his Franco-Venetian family. They converted house, which once belonged to Gustav Mahler's widow, into an intimate city retreat. Its bedrooms are spacious and serene, its drawing rooms are filled with Edwardian art and family heirlooms, and there’s an easy grace about the place that makes you feel immediately at home. Alongside one of the city’s countless canals, you’ll find a diminutive dark green door to will lead you through an urban oasis of bamboo, lavender and (inexplicably) gnomes to your Venetian home-from-home. It really is evocative of the secret garden, with ivy covered red brick walls, a small window to the canal outside and little nooks for al fresco summer breakfasts. Expect sheer style and a warm welcome - a stylish sanctuary in Venice. Highs Comfortable and down-to-earth, but with luxurious touches: Bulgari toiletries, soft robes, antique tables, silk drapes, delightful artefacts and paintingsA beautiful, private walled garden for delicious breakfasts and relaxing afternoonsWe welcomed the quiet location - you're tucked away from the main thoroughfares and people can't walk past the hotel A good option for families, with a safe walled garden, Suites with space for children and Lorenzo can recommend English speaking babysittersGood value for Venice, especially the Double Rooms Lows It isn't as close to the main tourist attractions as other hotels (this could be a plus though), but St Mark's Square is a 10-minute vaporetta ride, and you can walk to the Rialto in 15 minutesRooms are beautiful but understated, and not all ensuites have bathtubsNo restaurant, though breakfast is great and there are some good eateries close by" - Emma Taylor

Oltre il Giardino | Best places to stay in Venice

"This delightful little guesthouse (once home to composer Gustav Mahler’s widow) feels more like a private country retreat than a city hotel thanks to its wonderful shady canal-side garden hidden behind a high, creeper-clad wall. Located down a narrow alleyway close to the art-filled Frari church, it is a 10-minute walk from the Rialto Bridge but feels worlds away from the crowds. You’ll wake to the sound of church bells, the smell of baking croissants, and breakfast under the magnolia trees in summer. The Venetian owner and his staff welcome guests (an independent, artsy crowd) into their home which is modern and stylish yet comfortable with lots of thoughtful details such as fresh flowers and books to read. Absolutely lovely hotel. 6 rooms, and a beautiful garden in the middle of Venice. Located close to everything but not in the touristic area, which makes it even more enjoyable. The service is outstanding..Oltre il Giardino has definitely become our go to hotel in Venice.

I think this is our third stay over the years having also stayed in the past at The Aman and The Ciptiani - but we return here for the calm personal attention, the location and the good value.||A small suite on the 1st floor looking out over the garden. Sofa and chairs and a large comfortable bed - the rooms minimally decorated adds to the calm open bright feeling. ||Bathroom with bath tub and walk-in shower - all the toiletries you would expect. ||Downstairs breakfast outside on the terrace in the garden and in the colder months in the dining /drawing room. Good selection of breakfast foods, eggs and cold meat to order - freshly (I mean real and just made for you) blood orange juice. Fresh fruits, sweet rolls and breads and fab coffee and maybe just one or two other couples! ||Water taxi transfers to the airport can be arranged.||Local vaporetto at S.Toma - on the 1 and 2 lines. ||Nearby upscale restaurants include Wisteria and Da Fiore plus local trattoria and pizza places places and bars for cicchetti. ||Look out for the cocktail bar Il Mercante just around the corner.

A perfect stay in Venice! This small hotel, could not be more perfect. Quiet, and convenient local. Lorenzo, the owner, and his his staff, could not be more friendly and helpful. Warm, and comfortable, and very homey. With only 8 guest rooms, we received so much person attention, and hospitality! Wonderful breakfast, served in the garden, freshly made eggs, perfect fruit, and beautiful pastry. We had a a spacious room, with an extra sitting area. An oasis of serenity, and quiet, in busy Venice! We hated to leave! |Thank you, Lorenzo and staff!

Everything about our stay was an elevated experience. The room, service, and location were all perfect. The staff went above and beyond and assisted us in many ways, including booking water taxis, made multiple reservations, and reccomended and booked an intimate cooking class for us with Sabrina and Jordana.

Absolutely love this little hotel. It is a slice of perfection in the heart of Venice. All the staff is lovely. Lorenzo went out of his way to make amazing dinner reservations for us each night of our stay. He also set us up with a fabulous walking tour by a local woman named Rita. Breakfast in the garden was a delicious way to start each day. 5 star experience.

Oltre il Giardino is a lovely hotel option in Venice. The rooms are very comfortable and quiet. The staff are very friendly. They provide really generous breakfasts. ||The hotel is also in a really good location. It’s about a 10 minute walk to the train and bus/taxi stations, 5 minutes to a vaporetto stop, and a nice half-hour stroll to St Mark’s Basillica.

Spent four wonderful nights here. Perfect location and a quiet oasis after a hard days sight seeing. The room was lovely and the breakfasts were delicious. Pity the weather did not allow us to sit on the terrace. Service was most helpful and efficient. Thank you. We couldn’t have had a better anniversary stay.

Our third visit over the period of 7 years to this wonderful hotel. It feels like a home to us with the friendly team, homely spotless rooms and fantastic breakfast. The team always greet us in the morning and evening and have a friendly chat with Venice tips and restaurant recommendations. On this occasion we had our flight cancelled and the hotel were able to offer us a room for an extra night with no stress. Thank you Oltre Il Giardino, you are a special place to stay!
