Best Cafes Between Portland and Seattle - Eater Seattle

"With over six locations in Washington (including Seattle), Olympia is one of the most successful roasters in the Pacific Northwest. Its flagship coffee shop and roastery is located right across from city hall, with a gleaming custom La Marzocco Strada machine sitting atop a massive coffee bar. Meanwhile, the Poursteady machine does automated pour overs, and those looking for sweeter beverages can opt for honey lavender lattes or mocha milkshakes." - Seiji Nanbu

Google
Olympia Coffee isn’t just another roastery — it’s a movement. The staff and baristas were incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do. They shared the story behind each coffee with such care, and I left not only with next-level beans, but with a deep appreciation for where they came from.

Google
Clean, quick, excellent service. The bags of fresh roasted coffee beans are a must!

Dave Oltman

Google
Best coffee I have had in a long time. Do the $10 pour over, it is worth every penny.

Google
We stopped by this coffee shop on our way through town and highly recommend the detour! The baristas were super friendly and helpful to decide what to get, they have GF/Vegan pastries, and their coffee is delicious! My husband was excited about their T shirt that was very reasonably priced and a fun design. We’ll definitely be back!

Great little location service the best local coffee

Passing through Olympia found a nice and chill coffee spot with great taste and sweets

Google
This place is practically a home away from home for our family, all thanks to the baristas. We are lucky to have this little spot at the center of our neighborhood. It’s a bonus that the coffee is the best around 😍

Google
Coffee was fantastic, barista was so nice, and the cinnamon roll to die for

Yelp
The staff was so warm and welcoming. I could tell his is a hot spot with regulars. The coffee was delicious, love that they had creative flavors for the lattes. The pastries were SO good. I tried 2 and could have tried everything in the case. I am still craving that blueberry muffin! The inside has an industrial feel, I took my treats to go.

Yelp
Good place to stop for a coffee when heading back to Portland. They have free parking and the place has a nice atmosphere. They have indoor and outdoor seating and they make a proper cappuccino.

Yelp
We loved this Olympia Coffee locations. The baristas were super friendly and fast. Wasn't too crazy on a Saturday morning and there was plenty of parking. My americano was great and their scallion pastry with cheese warmed up was delightful. Hot chocolate was our favorite and probably the best hot chocolate we've ever had. Not too sweet and easy to drink right after it was made. And my americano was solid as well.

Yelp
Just stopped in on road trip and I was pleasantly surprised. I finally had an unpretentious delicious hot quality mocha, friendly service and delicious pastries . These days it's just hard to find people that heat the milk enough and serve quality drinks so appreciate when I get a good one. Pinned for the next road trip. Keep it up.

Yelp
I loved spending time with my family here while looking out the window of the coffee bar watching the rain. The baristas are friendly, knowledgeable, and craft great drinks! We tried out their burritos and seasonal winter drink menu. Thanks for a great time, will be back and recommend!

Yelp
I've been back a few times since my original review and I just don't like the coffee. I've tried it a few different ways, and it's just not GIVING. very much lackluster. i still enjoy the croissants, though. despite that, i don't think i'll be headed back anytime soon.
google avatar

Yelp
The staff is lovely, the interior is warm and welcoming, and the coffee and pastries are so tasty!
google avatar

Allisa L.

Yelp
Tried their seasonal special Hawaiian latte, very tasty! The barista helping me was very sweet and helpful! I'd definitely recommend this coffee, especially at this location with the kind baristas!

Yelp
I think this is the best coffee between Portland and Seattle that is reasonably accessible from I-5. The coffee is hot and fresh and there are good pastries too. The staff is friendly and the strip mall has a small, neighborhood feel including an excellent produce market (small grocery store) next door. This is very easy to access from I-5. Unfortunately, getting back on I-5 north if you are heading to Seattle is a little more difficult, but it is well worth the stop.

Yelp
While driving through Olympia, I needed a shot of caffeine badly. Came across Olympia Coffee - cute little shop with easy parking. The folks working were super friendly and fast. I got an 8oz nonfat mocha and it was excellent. Subtle chocolate, really good espresso, it was perfect. I would definitely stop by again if I return to Olympia.

Yelp
Great small coffee shop with newer aesthetic vibes! I asked what the barista recommended and I got a pour over coffee with 2% milk. It came out super fast and was absolutely delightful. Will be back again soon!

Yelp
It's my sister-in-law's local coffee shop, as it's the closest to her home. We stopped by one day for a caffeine fix. I got a flavored cold brew off their seasonal menu. I didn't love it -and thus I don't even remember its particular flavor. I just remember the flavor being very subtle and it having way more coffee flavor for me. Yes I understand that this is a coffee shop so most drinks should have coffee flavor. I guess I'm one of those people that likes frou frou very subtle tasting coffee drinks. It just wasn't for me. My hubby got a medium roast and he seemed to think it was good. I also picked up a couple of pastries - a blueberry mochi donut and a ham/cheese croissant. Both were solid. A little pricy for what we got but I'm happy to support local shops.

Yelp
once i walked in, i was immediately greeted and welcomed by the staff there; at an instant, i felt very comfortable. they were friendly and made conversation with me- which is something that i think is important. the place gave a cozy yet paced environment.. if that makes sense? there were an array of people either studying, reading, or chatting with friends. the location is pretty tucked in and off a highway almost- it's not directly in the downtown area, where you can go walking around the shops. it's also a small place but i was able to find a spot due to the fact that people would be coming and going. the tea was an absolute favorite of mine!! i loved the citrusy taste to it. i wanted to order a latte but my throat was feeling a little sore; it needed the tea. i wanted to try something they were famous for, the lady said the vanilla donut is pretty popular! i'm not a donut person but this one was soooo tasty:) they put the perfect amount of frosting to donut ratio- that really brought out the sweetness of the pastry. overall, if you're looking for a good place to meet up with a friend, or just to study alone- this is the place to be! the donut and tea is something i would get again!! they might turn me into a donut person..?

Yelp
If you are searching for great PNW coffee, search no further! While the line can get quite long, the shaded outside walkway is a great place to get some fresh air before getting to the ordering counter. Once the barista is ready for you, be sure to ask about seasonal specials, especially if you are visiting. Otherwise, I can highly recommend the Macchiato and Cortados, which were both short and perfect for us. The wait was quick, and there was a good amount of merchandise to preview. The restrooms are immaculate, making this an ideal morning place to much on some fresh pastries paired with a coffee, and maybe even a book. Parking is the only challenge here. There is no proper entrance or exit directionality, so be prepared for minor chaos, mostly due to the narrow spaces and small distance for maneuverability between the roadway and designated spots. Otherwise, walk up from downtown or your nearby hotel for a quaint neighborhood experience.

Yelp
Cute little shop in south Olympia. The workers were super friendly and helpful. There was a decent line when we showed up but we moved through quickly. The coffee was a good and the food was even better. The mt bakon had a really nice Smokey flavor to it came out to us fresh and hot.
google avatar

Sonia S.

Yelp
Cute little place. Can fill up quickly. They have some interesting drink choices. Baristas were not exactly helpful when I had a few questions. Their responses were not very informative, so customer service could be bumped up a notch. Some of the drinks even sound like cocktails using alcohol flavored syrups and bitters. Price is similar to Starbucks. Looks like you can use real dishes if you're consuming on premise versus disposable. Coffee wasn't bad, but wasn't great. Would possibly return if I were in the area.
google avatar

Ana A.

Yelp
I loved this place. I fell in love with their coffee. This location in particular, the staff was just very welcoming and friendly. The coffee is amazingly good.
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
The coffee was not all it was chalked up to be. It's not bad, but it's not worth the price tag. Their pastries are good but they're not made in house. The ambiance is very calming but not a great place to study.
google avatar

Yelp
I was really hoping this place would be great. We walked in and went to look at the baked goods in the case, which was on the opposite side of the register from the entry, and was scolded by the gal at the register. She was helping the ONE other person in the "line" and felt the need to brusquely tell me the line went the other way. My partner tried to help me out, since I was on crutches, by picking up the small menu card to show it to me, and was told to put it back. There was one other person behind the counter who stood there in such a way that I had no idea if he was there to help customers or just there to look down his nose at them. This place is beyond pretentious. It is so unlike anything I have experienced in Olympia. People in Olympia are usually so nice. I only gave an extra star because the pastry we had was great. So if you want a good pastry served with disdain, this is your spot.

Yelp
"BEST COFFEE IN THE AREA". Single origin, rich and flavorful... A bit spendy but you are a coffee connoisseur this is the ticket!
google avatar

Megan E.

Yelp
The coffee was amazing! The staff were sweet. I'll be back for a vanilla latte soon! I was having a bad morning and they drew a heart in my coffee. Made it better!

Yelp
Their Lavender Piper latte was an opinion changer of lavender lattes for me! I didn't like lavender after a bad coffee experience but when I read "house made lavender- pear - floral and Tellicherry pepper infused syrup" I was very intrigued and had to give lavender another try. It didn't just taste like a splash of lavender in your coffee. The infusion really mixes well into the coffee roast and gives off a rich aroma. For my husband, he wanted something darker and hopefully stronger to wake him up so I went with a Little Buddy Drip Coffee off of recommendation from the nicest baristas you'll meet around!. The Little Buddy roast had a dark flavorful taste. It doesn't just taste like black coffee, you can taste the delicious roast and it will wake you up without the jitter. You can pick up some beans to take home and this one is a crowd favorite. They were very informative and kind as I asked about different drinks. Even though I know I'm going with a latte, I like to know more, and they were great fun to talk to! I didn't know there were so many locations of Olympia Coffee Roasting and now will gladly pick some when in the area.

Yelp
Coffee is good here! I went to the one on Harrison. If customer service was better, or at least decent, I would go out of my way to come back but it's just disappointing. I wish they can train these young women to be professionally nice, that when customers are asking questions, they ask to genuinely know the answer about what they sell. They can't be annoyed or mad about this.

Yelp
Second visit - fine cappuccino, experienced baristas and interesting version of Kouign Amman - unconventional, but very tasty!
google avatar

Yelp
I love the food it's the best The service is wonderful the people there are really nice The ambiance is cute and cozy I love it here you need to try it
google avatar

Yelp
I wouldn't come here if you plan on getting online work done. Their internet connection is 'dial-up' slow, and of the two of us, only one could connect at all. Their pastry looked great, although baked in Seattle. That said, the pastry cabinet was swarming with fruit flies, (in February). Pretty gross. To be fair, they were buzzing around the seating area too, just concentrated in the pastry cabinet. The coffee tends toward the fruity side, which I prefer. It's better than most. The staff didn't greet us or say goodbye. I suppose that's good if you want to keep to yourself, but the entire experience didn't leave a strong impression.
google avatar

Beth C.

Yelp
I found this place on Google Maps and the reviews lured us in. We were on a road trip, and my husband needed coffee! The pastries held a profound allure, too, and that grew stronger when we saw them in person. I had to get a kouign amann, as it is rare to find that Breton pastry in the US. This is the far best version I have had. The buttery layers were mind blowing. My husband chose an almond croissant and that was flaky and wonderful as well, with a nice infusion of spices within the dough. I also grabbed an orange buttercream cookie from Main Street Cookie Company; we had that the next day, and it was delicious! This place has all sorts of deliciousness on offer.
google avatar

Sophia H.

Yelp
Cappuccino was fine. Twice baked almond croissant was good with a nice crispy texture on the outside and dense, sweet (but not overly so) taste inside. Wifi was good and fast, but there was only a few electrical outlets, so come early to nab one.

Yelp
Great location to people watch and to get the best coffee in the state. Known as one of the top roasters in the nation, my visit lived up to the expectations. The barista answered my many questions and was very friendly. The coffee is excellent and the lattes are delicious. Olympia is a must stop...
google avatar

Alana K.

Yelp
Stopped in on our way to and from Hoodsport. Small coffee shop. Cozy, clean, and comfortable. The three people we interacted with behind the bar were all friendly, and our barista made some excellent drinks. Lavender oat latte was outstanding with just the right amount of syrup to bring out the flavor of the coffee without overpowering it. Made me wish I'd ordered the same, but my cortado was exactly as I wanted it. Their matcha latte is also great. Make sure to specify if you want it sweetened. I personally like the bitterness of green tea so did not modify it. Small assortment of baked goods that are not to be missed. The gruyere pull-apart was to die for, and the zucchini bread was moist and delicious. New go-to when we're down this way.

Yelp
Outstanding customer service, great quality coffee, and awesome baked goods are the norm here. This local business truly knows how to get it all right! Even if you are a coffee novice, they will patiently help you find the right drink to suit your taste. My thanks to the associates who assisted me today.

Yelp
5/5 customer service 5/5 coffee flavor 5/5 atmosphere 5/5 experience overall. They always serve a good cup of coffee or tea! I love their setup and atmosphere. It's a nice place to read a book, study, or have a quiet chat with a friend. Perfect place to grab a cup of joe on a date and walk around downtown (during the day time hours). Love their selection of coffee beans to take home too.

Yelp
This is my favorite neighborhood coffee joint! I love taking a jog down to the South Olympia Coffee Roasting Co. and having a kouign-amann aka Queen with my oatmilk latte...this is where my relationship began with the Queen! I had never heard of the Queen before and it took me a minute to learn how to say her name properly but now we're besties!! She's a dangerous fatty buttery pastry and I love her!! They also have quiches, scones, and sometimes even donuts. The baristas here are always nice and friendly...no matter the time of day. It's an intimate environment...good for people watching as you can sit with a view of Capitol Blvd where lots of people are running by, walking their dogs, or on occasion a marathon will be taking place! And if you get hungry or someone with you isn't a coffee connoisseur there's a delish pizza joint next door, a sandwich shop, and a healthy grocery store.

Genevieve B.

Yelp
I'm a regular customer here and was shocked when I bought a 12 oz. mocha and two pastries that the price was over $21. There are no posted prices for the pastries, so of course I asked the cashier why on earth the price was so unreasonable. I don't mind spending a little more to shop and support local businesses, but over $21 for a mocha and two pastries is totally unreasonable unless you've got so much money that it's no object. The attitude of the people working there when I asked about the prices was hostile. In fact, the person who was waiting on me WALKED AWAY in the middle of the transaction, before I asked about the prices. I don't think I'll go back anytime in the near future. The prices are out of touch with the reality of how much things cost individuals.
google avatar

Olystacy B.

Yelp
I have come to love Olympia Coffee Roasting coffee BUT the pour overs are expensive AND the last 4-5 times I have been in, it has taken an extraordinary amount of time to get my coffee. This is a place that takes 15 minutes, on average, to get a cup of coffee. I think what bothers me most is that when I order pour overs they take orders from people coming in behind me before starting the pour over. Then they stop and do other things instead of completing the process- making the pour over even longer than it normally takes. I love this coffee but it isn't for those who are trying to get a cup and be on their way. You have to come with a big dose of time and patience.
google avatar

Natalie B.

Yelp
please take good care of the two people that are working at the time that I am leaving the review. I will I always try and stop by on my way home from visiting family in Seattle as I travel back to Portland. Today I was in a really bad and sad mood, and I walked in feeling really shy, and the two burritos were so kind to me even though I probably wasn't giving up great vibes. I should have told him myself, but I hope this review reaches them.

Laura C.

Yelp
This coffee place also has really good hot tea. I recommend their English Breakfast. Need to go early if you want a pastry.
google avatar

AJ S.

Yelp
Delightful service, particularly for 6:30am!! Great selection of pastries and excellent brew. Love this spot.
google avatar

Anela M.

Yelp
Cute interior. Solid coffee. Quick service. This place is easy to get to from highway 5 between Portland and Seattle. Offers a great spot to stop for coffee and restrooms.
google avatar

Leslie V.

Yelp
I think this is the best coffee shop/cafe that I've been to. Friendly service and a great environment to be in. Let me tell you about the coffee though... I ordered the caramel latte and IT WAS AMAZING! The flavor of the coffee was so rich. It was strong enough to keep me going for the rest of the day, but not too overpowering to make me jittery. They also have a bathroom and complimentary water on the side. I'm pretty sure they have wifi since a few people were using their laptops, but I never checked.
google avatar

Carel S.

Yelp
Got my gift card today! I think the key factor was communicating through the account I made online.
google avatar

Anthony B.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, good coffee and treats. Friendly staff, very welcoming. Recommend to visitors looking for local coffee
google avatar

Alexander B.

Yelp
My favorite location of my favorite coffee brand. This OCR is SO cozy. While it doesn't have as many single origin coffee options to try as the main downtown location, the ambiance is what I go for. In college I would spend hours studying here.

Lois M.

Yelp
Great seasonal latte, enjoyed the rose petals they sprinkled on top. got one of their breakfast sandwiches and thought it was pretty good for an on the go sandwich. Close by shops if you are looking to sip coffee while shopping:)
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
My wife and I love our weekend ritual getting drinks at Olympia Coffee. While she typically gets a Vanilla Latte, I always get excited for the seasonal drink. Fortunately for Olympia Coffee, they got me hooked on the Lavender Latte. Unfortunately for everyone, they've replaced it with some bummers (Sweater Weather and Orange something). Time to bring back the lavender! Still five stars for an awesome staff and decadent, twice-baked almond croissants.
google avatar

Travis S.

Yelp
Coffee was terrible. Tasted like dirt and I normally drink black coffee. Also ridiculously expensive. 6$ for a 12 oz coffee. The place was clean and the people were nice that's the only reason this isn't a 1 star review
google avatar

Don P.

Yelp
Cool place and great service I would definitely go here if we are in the area again We only got 2 nitro cold brews so we are not experts on their menu
google avatar

Ricardo M.

Yelp
I gave them 1 star based on their coffee - not their great customer service. They do not offer anything other than very acidic medium roasts. There is a trend amongst high end coffee shops to abandon the traditional dark roasts because they are more common and less exclusive. This shop is a prime example. I went in and asked for a drip coffee with their darkest roast. Their darkest roast was somewhere in the medium range. It was very acidic and left me with terrible cotton mouth and heartburn like all light roasts tend to do. Very unpleasant to drink. So much so that I went to starbucks right afterwards because even though starbucks isn't great - it's not AWFUL. Advice to shop: Get some dark roasts so your customers can drink your coffee without getting cotton mouth and heartburn. Some customers hate light roasts (my wife and I).
google avatar

Julia L.

Yelp
Quiches are yummy and so are a lot of their pastries. I don't believe they make them, they come from a vendor but I'm glad they have them. Lots of different roasts to choose from. Glad there are multiple locations.
